AcrowdvariouslyestimatedbyPressandradiofrom200,000 toover500,000gatheredinSydneystreetsandparksonSunday afternoon,April19,towitnesstheprocessionoftheBlessedSacrament.Theofficialpoliceestimatewashalfamillion,ofwhom morethan150,000kneltinHydeParkandaroundSt.Mary'sCathedralfortheBenedictiongivenfromthetopofthestepsatthe mainentranceoftheCathedral.

Thereaspecialaltarhad beenerected.Thescene yeasmostcolourfulonthe broadexpanseofstepsleadinguptothetemporaryaltar.Thereinthesun, whichhadsmiledonthe wholeweekofCongress ceremonies,thewhiteand goldofthealtarandthe Papalflagsplashedwiththe scarletofCardinalsandthe redandpurpleofalmost theentireHierarchyofAustralia,NewZealand,and Oceania.

Onthesteps,too,andin theroadbelow,werewhat seemedalmosthundredsof priestsrobedintheirMass vestmentsofalbsandwhite andgoldchasubles.On thesidesofthestepswere 500nunsinthecontrasting coloursofwhite,blue, brown,andblackofthe

thetimeofthesesquicentenarycelebrationsofAustraliain1937.Anditwas obviousthattheoverwhelmingmajoritywerethereto honourChristintheEucharist.

Togetthecrowdtothe CongresstheTransportdepartmentputonanextra 145tramsand100buses. Electrictrainserviceswere doubledonalllines.Between2.30p.m.and2p.m., 130electrictrainsreached WynyardundergroundstationcarryingEucharistic Congresspassengers.In thesametime80trainsarrivedatSt.Jamesstation,a totalof210electrictrainsin 90minutesinthetwoundergroundlinesleadinginto thecity.Atthesametime, inadditiontoextracarriagesontheordinarycoun-

trytrains,13special"Pilgrim"steamtrainsarrived fromthecountryfromcentreslikeNewcastletothe north,LithgowandWagga tothewest,andWollongongtothesouth.OnarrivalinSydneythepilgrims weregivenfreemealsby theCongressorganisersat theTrocaderoballroom. MidnightMasshadbeen celebratedinmanyofthe 640oddcountrychurchesof NewSouthWalestoenable thefaithfultogetdownto Sydneyfortheprocession, foreveninthebackcountrytheSundayMassmust goon,CongressornoCongress,asitwentoninthe daysoftheOldMassshandrydan. Thegreatconcourse kneltfortheBenediction °andlaterfortheApostolic BenedictioninCathedral street,inBoomerangstreet, inWilliamstreet,inCollege street,bankedupasfaras Oxfordstreet,inParkstreet and,ofcourse,inHyde \Parkitself.Whatevermay navebeentheactualnumbersitwasprobablythe mightiestcrowdinSydney's historythatlinedthestreets onSundayafternoon. I havespokentoseveraloldtimerssince,andtheycould notrememberacrowdto 'equalit.Withthepossibleexception,andonlyjust,of

that,fortheprocessionat Theprocessionmovedoff at2p.m.,alongthe14mile routefromSt.Patrick's,on Churchhill,onthesite wheretheBlessedSacramentwaspreservedinthe houseofCharlesDavis whentherewasnoCatholic priestinAustralia.More than700policemen,assisted by900church-wardensin greenandyellowsashes, controlledtheroute.Down Grosvenorstreetwoundthe procession,thenaroundthe cornerofGeorgestreetinto Bridgestreetasfarasthe Botanicgardens.Thereit turnedinto,Macquarie streetuntilitreachedSt. Jamesstation.Thenit circledHydeParkbyway ofElizabethstreet,Park street,andCollegestreet, untilitcametorestatthe stepsleadinguptoSt. Mary's.

About20,000 people marched,andtheytook nearly1 hourstopassa givenpoint.Theresult wasthatitwasafter4.30 p.m.bythetimetheMonstrancenearedtheCathedral,whereeventhelastarrivalsamongthespectators hadbeenwaitingpatiently fornearlythreehours.

Theproceedingswereamplifiedallalongtheroute, andfromjustafter2p.m. until5p.m.(whenthePope spoke)thevastcrowdjoinedinsaying15decadesof theRosarygivenoutbythe Rev.Dr.Muldoon,ofSt.

Patrick'scollege,Manly,interspersedwithprayers, meditationsandwell-known hymns.Foronewhole afternoon,therefore,the soundofacityprayingrose toGod.Itisdoubtfulif manyofthelayCatholics presenthadeverhadsucha longuninterruptedsession ofvocalprayerbefore.It wasmorethanaholyhour. Itwasthreeholyhours.

Mountedpoliceledthe procession.Theywerefollowedbyaltarboysfrom St.Joseph'sMaristBrothers'college,Hunter'sHill. Thencamethecrossbearer andthevividcoloursofthe AustralianandPapalflags, followedbythebannerof theBlessedSacrament.Two Armymajorsescortedthe Australianflag,twoPapal Knights,withswordsand bottlegreenuniformswith silverbraiding,thePapal flag.AltarboysfromSurry Hillsandpageboysin whiteescortedthewhitesilk banneroftheBlessedSacrament,whichwasflanked bycolourpartiesofthe Grail.Themanycoloured flagsoftheGrailwerecarriedbygirlsinwhiteblouses,goldberets,andblue andgoldskirts. Thencamegroupsof96 schoolgirls,15ofthemin all,eachrepresentingadifferentteachingOrder.Then cametheboysinfivegroups of288,eachagainrepresentingadifferentteaching Order.

Afterthechildrencame thenationalgroups,many ofwhomwereinnational costume.Thebiggestsinglegroupwasprobablythe Italians,andthesmallest theRussians,buftheactual orderinwhichtheymarchedwere:Croatian,Czech, Dutch,Hungarian,Italian, Latvian,Lithuanian,Maltese,Russian,Polish,Slovak, Slovene,andUkrainian.

Immediately following cametheCaledonianCatholicassociation,andthenthe splashofgreenheralding theIrishNationalassociation.Thisbroughtfortha scatteredroundofapplause fortheoneandonlytime duringtheprocession,butit diedawayquicklyasthe solemnityoftheoccasion wasrealised.Stillthere wereIrishheartsinthe spectatorswhichcould scarceforbeartocheer.It wasfittingthatitshouldbe 150th.anniversaryofthe firstofficialMassinAustralia,celebratedforabodyof Irishconvictswhobore wealsontheirbacksasa tokenoftheirrefusaltoattendanyotherreligious ceremonyinSydneybutthe Mass.Inanycase,it wouldscarcelybepossible

foranIrishmantoletthe greenflagpasswithouta cheerevenifthedevilhimselfwerecarryingit,let alonewhenitisfollowed bythegreenkiltsofthe Irishpipers.

NextcametwoChildren ofMaryfromeachparishamarchingunitof320in all.OtherChildrenof Maryincloaksandveils linedtheentireprocessional routeontheedgeofthe roadways,averyeffective lookingguardofhonour. TheywerefollowedbyrepresentativesoftheThird OrderofOurLadyofMt. Carmel,abodywhichI thinkisnotknowninWesternAustralia.Afterthem cametheTheresians,and thenaverylargecontingent ofCatholicnursesinuniformfromalmostascoreof hospitals.Immediatelybehindcamethecontrastof thegreen,goldandscarlet collarsofthemenoftheCatholicFriendllysocieties.

Thecamethefirstpause intheprocession,whilethe menoftheHolyNamesocietyindiocesangroups swungintoview.There seemedanalmostendless streamofthem,inranksof

6,000marched.Thename ofWesternAustraliawas bornealoftastherepresentativesoftheGoldenWest wentby.

Ifonemightbepermitted anycriticismoftheprocessionitisthatperhapstoo manyHolyNamemen marched.Idonotknow whethershewasopposedto theemancipationofmenor notbutonewomannotfar frommesatdownonthe grassafterdeclaringthe sightofsomanymentogethertobeadrearything. TheCongressofcoursewas alsocelebratingthe25thanniversaryoftheestablishmentoftheHolyName SocietyinN.S.W.,butpossiblythisstageoftheprocessioncouldhavebeen lightenedbyfloatsofschoolchildrenortheGenesian PlayersdepictingthemysteriesoftheRosarywhich werebeingrecitedorof tableauxbearingonthe PenalMassorsomeother themeassociatedwiththe Eucharist.Idonotknowif suchtableauxwouldbeliturgicallyproperinaprocessionoftheBlessedSacrament.

Thisdayisrecognised throughouttheBritishCommonwealthofNations,and ineverycityandlargetown ofthosenations,ceremonies willbeheldtorecallto youththeidealswhichhave madepossibletheCommonwealthofNations.

Thisyearthedaywill haveaspecialsignificance. Asitfallssoclosetothe CoronationDayofournew Queen,thedaywillbean opportunityforyouthto expressitsloyaltytoQueen Elizabeth11.

HereinPertharrangementshavebeengoingon forsomemonths.Theorganisingisbeingdonebya sub-committeeoftheAssociatedYouthCommitteeof W.A.Agooddealofdetailedplanninghasbeen done,andthecommittee expectsthisyear'sceremoniestobehighlysuccessful.

HisExcellency,SirCharlesGairdner,governorof W.A.,hastakenmorethan apassiveinterestinthe conductoftheday.Atall levelshehasimpressedon peopletheimportanceof youthrealisingtheirresponsibilitiestotheEmpire.Itisathissuggestion thatsecondaryschoolshave beeninvitedtosendrepresentativestotheparade, andhehasalsoaskedall churchestoimpressupon theiryoungpeopletheneed tomakethedaysuccessful.

MostCatholicsecondary schoolshaveagreedtosend representativegroups,and

At2.15theGovernorwill giveashortaddressand concludebyreadingthe messagetoyouthfromHer MajestytheQueen.Groups willthenparticipateina marchpastthegovernor, beforemarchingthrough thestreetsofPerth.

TheCatholicgroupswill marchtoSt.Mary'sCathedral,whereaspecialceremonywillbeheld.This ceremonywillincludethe reading,byaYouthMovementmember,oftheactof dedication,asermonbythe MostRev.L.J.Goody,and willconcludewithBenedictionoftheBlessedSacramentandtherecitationof theYouthMovements' prayer.

VaticanCity,April6(Radio,NC).-Along controversybetweentheHolySeeandtheSovereignMilitaryOrderofMaltahasbeensettledwith theorderacceptingtheproposalsmadebyaspecial commissionofCardinals

AnnouncementofthesettlementwasmadebyOsservatoreRomano,VaticanCity daily.Butthepapergaveno indicationwhattheproposals ofthecommissionofCardinalswere,anditcouldnotbe immediatelylearnedelsewhere.

"TheorderhasnowexpressedtotheHolySeeits devotedadherencetotheCardinals'proposals,"thebrief announcementsaid."Thishas concludedthejudicialexaminationaskedforbythe orderitself."

Thecontroversy,which arosemorethanayearago, concernedanapparentconflictbetweenthesovereign rightsoftheorderandthe religiousauthorityofthe SacredCongregationofReligious,adepartmentofthe

HolySee.Theorderhasthree gradesofknights,oneof whichtakesthethreereligiousvowsofpoverty,chastityandobedience.Thisbeingthecase,theauthorityof theCongregationofReligious enteredashavingproper jurisdiction.

Accordingtotheoldparishrecordsthefirstofficial referencetothechurchin Toodyayisintheyear1853, butsomeoftheolderinhabitantsofthedistrictadmitthattheoldtownship, whichisfivemileswestof thetownshipofthepresent day,existedsinceabout 1845,andhaditsown church.

Thisisprobablycorrect sincetheruinsofthechurch inWest-Toodyaystillremain.Thereisnoreference astotheyearinwhichthe churchwasbuilttherebut someoftheBenedictine priestsbelievethatduring thoseearlyyearsMasswas celebratedinprivatehouses byapriestwhocameoccasionally.Thiswouldaccount forthefactthatthereareno officialrecordstill1853.

Thepresentchurchwas certainlybuiltbefore1859 andthechurchinWest Toodyaywasbuiltin1850or 1852.WestToodyaydidnot existformanyyearsasthe peoplechangedtheirhabitationtowhereToodyay nowstands.ThenewtownshipwasknownasNewcastleanditretainedthis nametillabout1909when thenameoftheoriginal townwasgiventoit.Ithad itsownchurchprobably about1856or57.

Thefirstavailablerecord disclosesthenameofRev. PeterAragonin1853.He wasprobablythefirstresidentpriest.Baptismsare
