Afewmonthsbackthetitledeeds,grantingBishopJ.P.O'Loughlin,M.S.C., anewMissionleaseonthePhillipsonblock,40milessouth-eastofAliceSprings, weresignedbyHisHonourMr.F.J.Wise,theAdministratoroftheNorthernTerritoryPhillipsonblocknowbecomesSantaTeresamission;andanewdealforthe nativesoftheEastArandatribeofAustralianaboriginesisunderway.Thisisa timelychange,forinthepasttheirdealhasalwaysturnedoutarawone.

WhenSirCharlesTodd,thetownorastationhomefollowingcloseontheheels oftheintrepidexplorer Stuart,putthroughthe 2,000mileOverlandTelegraphfromAdelaideto Darwinin1872,hesetup camponasharpcurveof theriver,whichnowbears hisname,andcalledthe nearbychainofwaterholes, inhonourofhiswife,Alice Springs.Littledidherealizethen,thathewasencroachingonthesacredpreservesoftheEastAranda tribesmen;thathewastakingovertheirhappyhuntingground,longhallowed withallmannerofancestraltraditions.

AsthetownofAlice Springsforgedahead,the Arandamenwereina quandary.Sometriedto adjustthemselvestothe whiteman'swayoflife aroundthetown.Others wentinsearchofnew stampinggrounds,onlyto findthesetoo,soonabsorbedinhugecattlestationsas thepastoralindustrydeveloped.

ViceandDisease

Thecomingofthewhite mandisruptedtheAranda'soldnomadicandhuntinghabits.Hehadnoland hecouldcallhisown:no placewherehefeltathome. Hemustattachhimselfto

stead,orsimplydrift fromonetotheotherseekingcasualemployment.He tendedtobecomeshiftless, lazy,ill-fed,andbadly clad,oftenunwashedand unwanted,ahanger-onin thewhiteman'ssociety. Littlewonderifhedeterioratedmorally,asnew vicesseepedintohisvery wayoflife.Littlewonder, too,thathepresentedan easytargetfordisease,with tuberculosis,granulomaand trachomaeverreadytofind theirmarkwithdevastating results.

MissionEvacuated Seeingthesadplightof thesenomadsapeingtownsfolk,FatherP.Moloney, M.S.C.,alwaystheirchampion,foundtimeamonghis parochialdutiestosetup theLittleFlowerMission nearAnzacHill,ontheoutskirtsofAliceSprings. Thoughhamperedbytoo closeproximitytotown, thispracticalventurewas amplyblessed;many-nativeswereinstructedand becameClwistiansduring FatherMoloney'sguardianship.

WorldWarII.brought furtherdrawbackstothis set-up.In1942thousandsof troopspouredoutatthe railhead.transformingthis

one-timeisolatedcountry townintoacomplicated battle.station.TheArandas wereoutofstepmorethan ever. Asatemporarymeasure, Arltunga,adesertedgold miningcentre,wasmade available.Overtheeighty treacherousmilesthatseparatethisremotespot fromAliceSprings,alarge militaryconvoyevacuated theentireMission.Following thecourseoftherugged MAcDonnellRangeseastward,theheavilyladen trucksploughedthrough deepgorges,thewheelsof thevehiclesoftenburying themselvestotheaxlesin theyieldingshiftingsand.

TheEastArandassoon foundtheirfeetinthis strangehome.Anoldwell, siltedupfromdisuse,when thoroughlycleanedoutand fittedwithapump,offered itsmeagreoutputasthe solewatersupplyofthe settlement.TheArltunga countrythoughrichinmetallicores,wassingularly aridandbarren,offering

atSantaTeresaasasortof advancepartyandreceptioncommittee.Theyhave buildingoperationswellin hand,andhavetakendeliveryoftonsofcement, whichtravelledonethousandmilesbyrailfromAdelaideinthesouth,large quantitiesofconstructional steel,broughtoverathousandmilesfromDarwinin thenorth.Overandabove, theyarere-erectingthedismantledbuildingssentin fromArltungabyFather Guest,whowillremainat theoldsitetilltheevacuationiscomplete.

WouldCarryCattle

SantaTeresa,lyingasit doesbetweentheCentral AustralianRailwaytothe westandSimpsonDesertto theeast,containslarge areasofgoodpastoral country,reasonablywateredbybores,andsprings. Thehomesteadboreyields anaverageof1,100gallons perhour.Thewholeblock isconvenientlyenclosedby ahcrseshoe-shapedperi-

TherearesignsofagrowinginclinationtodiscussopenlyandfranklytheplightofthePalestine refugees.Thisisaproblemofsomestandirig whichhasneverreceivedanythingliketheattention itsgravityandproportionsshouldcommand.Now, however,withtheexplosivecharacteroftheMiddle Eastcoiningmoreandmoretoattention,itispossiblethattheWestwilltakeactionfromasenseof expediencywhichitlongagoshouldhavetaken fromhighermotives.IftheMiddleEastshould eruptviolently,itcouldwelldwarfthebitterbut containedfightinginKorea.Itcouldhaveallthe seriousrepercussionsofanopenbreakinCentral Europe.Theproblem,succinctly,istheplightof morethan800,000homelesspersonsscatteredover theArabworld.They,andperhaps200,000others, leftPalestineatthetimeoftheArab-Israeliwar. Thesesurvivingrefugees-104,000inLebanon, 84,000inSyria,nearly500,000inJordan,andover 200,000inGaza-cannotreturntiPalestine.They arehomeless.Theylivemiserablyinrefugee camps,andobserverssaytheysufferedevenmore fromasenseofhopelessness.

Thelittlepartysetoutin theyear1863onavoyage lasting139days.andat lengthreachedHolponlulu, wherehebecameapriest attheageof23.Aboutthis time,leprosyspreaditself amongthenatives,who weresenttoMolokai.It waslonely,andnoonewas theretocareforthem.One dayJosephwenttotheBishoponcemoreandaskedif hecouldlookafterthem.At firsttheBishopwouldnot consent,butwhenheknew

hewasinearnesthelet himgo. Hesetoutinacattleboat, andwhenhearrivedat Molokaiadreadfulsight metFatherDamien'seyes. Hesettoworktoimprove theisland.Astherewas nowater,heaskedtheAmericangovernmentifthey wouldsupplywaterforthe colony.Intheyear1884, FatherDamienwasstricken withleprosy,andonApril 15,1889,hebreathedhis last.Hisbodywastaken intheyear1936forreburialatLouvain.

Dr.Thom,presidentofthe N.S.W.CouncilofChurches, wasreportedassayingata speechataProtestantrally intheLyceumtheatre,the daybefore,"anyclaimby theRomanCatholicChurch tomakeMarytheMother ofChrist,thefirstAustraliansaintwouldincrease thegulfbetweentheProtestantandRomanCatholic churches."

ItispossiblethatthiseminentProtestantleaderwas gettingMary,theMotherof Christ,mixedupwith MotherMaryoftheCross, whichshouldmakethe BrownJosephsfeelvery complacent.

NumbersArguable

However,thefirstbig "show"oftheCongress reallycameontheSunday nightafterthefloodlighting oftheCathedral,towhichI haveearlierreferred.NobodyhadbeenurgedtoattendthesolemninaugurationoftheCongressonthat night,whichmadethehuge attendanceallthemoreremarkable.The"bignights" weretobeonWednesday andFridayattheShowgrounds,tobefollowedby thefinalprocessionthrough thecitystreetsontheafternoonofSunday,April19.

Yetahighpoliceofficial estimatedthat5,000people pacsedintotheCathedral fortheinauguralceremony, while75,000spilledoverthe steps,thetramlines,andthe parksoutside.Butpolice andtoagreaterdegree newspapersin Sydney arenotoriously"numbershappy"whenitcomestoesimatingcrowds.

Onenewspapersaidthat 500,000peoplelinedGeorge streetinSydneyfromthe TownhalldowntoBridge streettoseethefuneralprocessionofthelateW.M. Hugheslastyear,whenit wouldhavebeenvirtually impossibletohavefitted morethan100,000persons alongthatroutewithoutthe buildingsburstingasunder, andwhen70,000persons(of whomIwasone)wasprobablynearerthemarkas anestimate.Eventhepoliceestimateonthatoccasionwasabout30,000persons. OntheotherhandIwould notbesurprisedtoseea crowdofuptoaquarter ofamillioninSydneyfor thefinalEucharisticprocessionnextSundayafternoon.Theremaywellbe manymoreifverylarge numbersofcuriousnon-Catholicsturnuptoobserve eventsdespitetheofficial banontheprocessionimposedbytheleadersofthe Protestantdenominations.

Agreatbenefittothose whowishtoparticipatein Congresseventswhichthey cannotattendisthefactthat theCatholicstation,Radio 2SM,hasbeengivinga "roundtheclock"coverage ofallevents.

StatureofCardinal

Inhisinauguraladdress, whichwasamplifiedoutside theCathedral,CardinalGilroysaid-thatthePopewas anamiableandaffableman, andhadspontaneouslyappointedhimLegatetothe Congress.EarlierapersonalhandwrittenBullto thiseffecthadbeenreadby theUditoreoftheApostolic Delegation.

HisEminencethenproceededtorecounttheindividualmeritsofeachof theimportantvisitorsfrom abroadwhowereinthe sanctuarywithhim,includedinhiswelcometheBishopsofthePacificIslands andNewZealand,andfinallythemembersoftheAustralianhierarchywhohad comefromallAustralian States,sothat,"despitelocal differences,"theCongress hadbecomeanationaltribute.

Whetheritwasthatthe giftoftonguegoeswiththe bestowaloftheRedHat,it isverynoticeablethatCar-
