HisGraceexpressedpleasureatbeinginvitedto blesstheextensionstothe schoolandpresbytery.Fifteenyearsago,hesaid,he wastheretoblessthefirst extensions-thethreeclassrooms-whichhadproveda tremendousboonintheinterveningyears.Andnow thosenewclassroomswould beaverydefiniteacquisitiontotheparish.They wouldreleasetheoldschoolchurchsothatitcouldbe usedexclusivelyforchurch purposes,andwouldobviatethedifficultyandinconvenienceofhavingchurch andschoolinthesame building.

tobuild.withinthecoming year,27schoolsorschoolchurches.Thosebuildings wouldprovide80additional classrooms,andwouldcost intheregionof£195,000.

Thatwasabigburdento askthepeopletobear,but therewasaprincipleat stake,andwheretherewas aprincipleatstake,ourpeoplehadneverbeenfound wanting,andwithGod's helptheyneverwouldbe.

"Yourconviction,"continuedHisGrace,isthateducationwithoutreligionis nottrueeducation.Your convictionisthatthecrucifixshouldoccupyaprominentplaceintheclassroom

growinggenerationbygeneration."

Ifourchurchesare crowdedto-day,Sunday afterSunday;iftheirtern, porarychurchinShenton Park(withapopulationof 1,500Catholics)wasfilled threetimeseachSunday; theywereindebtedforthat happypositiontotheCatholicschoolsystem;andthey wereindebtedtothose wonderfulmenandwomen, membersoftheReligious Orders,withoutwhoseselfsacrificeandzealthatschool systemwouldbeimpossible andimpracticable, HisGracepaidtributele theSistersofMercy,who hadbeenstaffingtheschool since1912.For25years, hesaid,theywentoutby tram,morningaftermorning,until,in1937,theyacquiredtheconventinNicholsonroad.ShentonPark owedthoseSistersavery greatdebtofgratitude.

DoctorCollinshadhada verybigdecisiontomakewhethertobuildachurch ortobuildextensions.To buildachurchwouldcost atleasttwo-and-a-half timesthecostoftheextensions,andthatwouldbea veryheavyburdentoimposebnthepeople.

HisGracesaidhewas confidentDr.Collinshad madeawisedecision,becausethetemporarychurch wouldserveitspurposeadmirablyforsomeyearsto come,untilsuchtimeasthe presentdebthadbeenliquidatedandachurchfundestablished,sothattheycould thenbuildapropertemple tothegloryofGodinthe cornersitereservedforit;a buildingthatwouldbeworthyofthecite,worthyofits holypurpose,andworthyof thefaithandgenerosityof thepeople.

Andwhenthattimecame, asinevitablyitwouldin God'sgoodtime,thenthe presenttemporarychurch wouldadmirablysuitasa parishhallandasanas-

wouldmeasureuptomoderneducationalauthorities.

ThechildrenoftheconventsangtheMassand theirsweetandtunefulrenditionwasatributetothe PresentationSisterwhoina shorttimeaccomplishedwith somuchsuccessthepolishedfinishwhichwasdemonstratedbythechildren.

FollowingtheMass,the LordAbbotofficiallyopenedtheschool.Hewasintroducedbythechairmanof thecommittee,Mr.T.Hesford,whobeforecallingon theAbbot,askedFather Hynestosayafewwords.

Using1952statistics,His Lordshippointedoutthat of23,000childrenbeing educatedtheninnon-governmentalschools,15,000 werereceivingeducationin Catholicschools.Hesaid theywerenotreceivingany financialassistancefromthe government,althoughthey werewithotherdenominationalschoolssavingthe treasuryanestimated £1,000,000ayear.Allthey askedforwassomeworthwhileassistancetofinance thecostofeducatingtheir childrenandtowhichthey wereentitled.

MoralStandards

Hecongratulatedthe peopleoftheWyalkatchem parishinhavingthefortitudeandcouragetobuild theschoolandthusprovide theirchildrenwiththekind ofreligiouseducationthey wantedthemtohave.This theyhadeveryrighttodo undertheUnitedNations DeclarationofRightsto whichAustraliawasasignatory.

Althoughtheyreceivedno governmentassistancethey continuedtobuildtheir schoolstoallowtheirchildrentoreceiveaneducation thatinculcatedamoral standardwithoutwhich theirlivescouldnotamount toanything.

Hethenconcludedhisremarksbydeclaringthe schoolopen.

ConfidenceinDistrict

mitthemselvestosucha largesumofmoneyandhe concludedbywishingthat thegovernmentwoulditself displayasmuchconfidence inhiselectorate.

Thenfollowedaneloquent addressbytheRev.E. O'HalloranofSouthern Crossinwhichhelaunched anappealforfundstomeet thecostofthebuilding.

Mr.T.Hesford,chairman ofthecommitteetheninvitedallpresenttopartakeof thehighteawhichwas servedonthespaciousverandahandintheareaat therear.

Mr.L.C.Diver,MLC,in aaddressnotunmixedwith humour,saidthatithad givenhimgreatpleasureto bepresentattheopeningof aschoolofthatnature.He saidthatthedaymustcome whenthepeoplewhohad erectedtheirownschools wouldreceiverecognition fromthegovernment.He saiditwasnotonlyaproblemaffectingCatholicsbut otherdenominationstooand risingcostsmadeitaneven harderburdenonpeople whowerealreadyshoulderingcostsoverandabove theirsharetowardseducatingtheirchildren.

OnMarch25,about200 metropolitanCatholiccollegesandschoolsaccepted theinvitationoftheRev. BrotherPrincipal,ofChristianBrothers'college,St. George'sterrace,tobepresentataneveningofoneactplayspresentedbythe Therrysocietyinthecollege theatrette.

Theprojectwasinthe natureofanexperiment, andjudgingbytheenthusiasticreactionoftheyoung audiencetotheplays,was entirelysuccessful,andwill bearrepeating.Thosewith theinterestsoftheyoung adolescentatheartwillsee inthismovementofTherry apowerforgoodand-our Catholicteachersmustwelcomethisextrasupportto theireffortstoinstilculturalandaesthetictastesin theirpupils.

Anyprospect,howeverremote,ofachangeis thestatusofCzechoslovakia'sclosetoninemillion CatholicsfollowingthedeathofPresidentKlement GottwaldhasbeencompletelydissipatedbytheelectionofformerPremierAntoninZapotockyashead ofthestronglyanti-CatholicregimeinPrague.A weekafterthepassingofGottwald,underwhoseregimetheChurchinCzechoslovakiahasexperienced aruthless,systematicpersecution,therubber-stamp Pragueparliamentvotedunanimouslyforasuccessorwhohaslongbeenonrecordasanolessmilitant' enemyofallthattheChurchstandsfor.Thenew PresidentofCzechoslovakiaassumestopleadership withapersonalbackgroundthatoffersnottheslightestpossibilityofanyrelaxationinaprogrammethat hasmadethisCatholicnationatestinggroundof everyconceivableformofanti-religiousrepression.'

Sixty-eightyearsold,Zapotocky,accordingto reports,isaformerNaziconcentrationtrustee,who iswantedbytheDutchauthoritiesonwarcrimes charges.Amanwhoreceivedonlyanelementary educationinhisyouth,hehasbeenalife-longrevolutionary,andforyearsatradeunionbosswith' thefateofmillionsofCzechoslovakworkersinhis hands.Becauseofhisrigidprogrammeoflabour controlandexploitation,thestatusofworkersin Czechoslovakiato-dayisvirtuallythatofslaes. PresidentZapotockywasnotoftenafrontfigurein. inthecampaignagainsttheChurch.Nevertheless. heisclearlyonrecordasamanwhowillseethatthe anti-CatholicprogrammeofthePragueregimeis rigidlymaintained.InJune,1948,Zapotockymade Redheadlineswhenhedeliveredaradiospeechdenouncingthepriestsandlaymenwhohadrefusedto, co-operatewiththespurious"CatholicAction"organisationsetupbythegovernment.Informed thatonlyacomparativehandfulofCatholicshad joinedthenewgroup,Zapotockywentontheairto proclaim:
