Thisgoodapostolicwork isbeingdone,forthemost part,bypeopleundistinguishedbyoutstandingtalents;bypeoplewhohave thesimpleintentionofbeing usefultoOurLadyinthe battleforsouls.Many morerecruitsareneededto servebeneaththestandard ofMary'slegioninthis giganticstruggleagainstthe forcesofevil.

MADANG,NewGuinea,March13 (NC.)-Thepastsevenyearshavewitnessedanalmostmiraculousrecoveryofthe CatholicmissionsofeasternNewGuinea afterbeingvirtuallyannihilatedduringthe Japanesewartimeoccupation.

Thestoryisonethat American-bornBishop AdolphNoser,S.V.D., formerBishopofAccra,on theGoldCoast,Africa,will learnatfirsthandwhenhe takesoverhisnewdutiesas VicarApostolicofAlexishafen.

AtAlexishafenitself, nearhereandoneofthe fivemissionjurisdictionsin easternNewGuinea,Bishop Noserwillseesignswhich indicate,notonlythatthe NewGuineamissionshave survivedanalmost100per centobliteration,butthat theyarenowinwhatappearstobeagoldenageof opportunityandpromise.

Fewmissionsanywhere weresothoroughlydestroyedduringthewaras werethoseofthislarge Pacificislandwherethe firstSocietyoftheDivine Wordmissionariesarrived fromSteyl,Holland,in 1896.WhentheJapanese surrendercamein1945,an estimated95percentofthe churches,schools,hospitals andothermissionbuildings alongthecoasthadbeen destroyed.Themissionaries wereinternedinconcentrationcampsandmanywere killedduringAlliedairattacks.

InMay,1952,aportionof theterritoryoftheVicariateApostolicofWewak waserectedasthePrefectureApostolicofAitapeand confidedtotheAustralian FranciscanFathers,with Msgr.IgnatiusDoggert, O.F.M.servingasPrefect Apostolic.Inadditiontothe tenAustralianpriestsstaffingthemission,thereare tenItalianFranciscanswho wereexpelledfromCommunistChina.

TheSwissFederalConstitutionof1874bars membersoftheSocietyof Jesusfromengagingineducationalworkorinthespiritualministry.Amongother discriminatoryfeatures,it alsoprohibitstheestablishmentofnewmonasteries andbanstheerectionof newbishopricswithoutgovernmentalpermission.The ritualslaughterofanimals, prescribedbyJewishdietarylaw,isalsooutlawed.

Inanswertoaparliamentaryinquiry,thegovernmentofZurichrecently reportedthediscoveryof 20Jesuitsinthecanton (province).Itnotedthat mostofthepriestswere engagedineditorialwork andstudentguidance-and

thuswithintheletterof 'thelaw-butannouncedit hadeffectedtheremovalof threemembersofthesocietyfoundservingas parishcurates.Thegovernmentsaiditremindedthe Jesuitsthatevengiving sermonsatMassesforstudentsisillegal,andpromisedtheparliamentitwould keepmembersoftheorder underregularsurveillance.

whohaveeitherbeenexecutedorhave diedwhileprisonersofCommunistregimes behindtheIronCurtain.ItisthatofArchbishopNicolaVincenzoPrennushi,ofDurazzo,Albania,whowassentencedto20 years'imprisonmentin1948.

TheArchbishop'sdeath wasannouncedbytheFides NewsAgency,amissioninformationorganinRome, whichstatedthatthenews wasbroughtby"awellinformedpersonwholeftAlbaniarecently."TheinformantreportedthatArchbishopPrennushi"diedafter tureandindignities."

ArchbishopPrennushi's deathleavesonlyoneCatholicprelateinAlbania78-year-oldBishopBernardineShlaku,ofPulati,who alsowasarrested,butwas subsequentlyreleasedfrom prisonbecauseofhisadvancedageandpoorhealth. Heisnowconfinedtohis residenceatKoderShen Gjergji,inthemountainsof northernAlbania.

TwootherBishopshave beenexecutedduringthe longandsystematicpersecutionoftheCatholic ChurchinAlbania.They areBishopFrancisGjini,of Alessio,andBishopGeorge Volaj,ofSapa.Another prelate,BishopGaspare Thaci,ofScutari,diedof naturalcausesin1946,and hisSeeisstillvacant.

NoTrialPretence

Archbishop Prennushi, whobelongedtotheFranciscanOrderwasbornin ScutarionSeptember4, 1885,andwasordainedon -March19,1908. Hewas madeBishopofSappain 1936,andin1940waspromotedtotheDurazzoarchdiocese.Hisarresttook placeinJanuary,1948,and hewascondemnedtoprisonwithouteventhepretenceofatrial.

ThedeathofArchbishop PrennushiandtheincapacityofBishopThacileaves theestimated113,000CatholicsofAlbaniawithouta singleepiscopalleader. Meanwhile,thesmallhandfulofpriestsstillatliberty liveunderconstantfearof arrest,andtoallintents andpurposesareobligedto carryontheirministryin secret.

Theanti-Catholicreign ofterrorbeganinDecember,1944,justamonthafter theCommuniststookpower.

Indicatingthedecimation thathastakenplaceinthe ranksoftheclergy,both secularandregular,isthe factthatofthe93diocesan clergy,17hadbeenexecutedasofDecember,1950,29 imprisonedorputinlabourcamps.Elevenother priestsweredraftedinto thearmy,tendied,and threeescapedfromthe country.Thisleftonly13

free,butthereisnoinformationastohowthissmall groupisfaringatthemoment.Itisknownthat theyarecloselywatched andforbiddentopreachor teachthecatechism.

Nolessdismalhasbeen thefateoftheregular clergy.Ofthe101Jesuits andFranciscanspreviously inthecountry,16hadbeen shotbytheendof1950,31

expelled,and35imprisoned orsenttoforcedlabour.Another13weresaidtobein hiding,whilesixhaddied. Manypriests'andnunswere expelledbecauseoftheir Italianorigin,andmeanwhilehundredsofnuns wereimprisoned,sentto workcamps,or"defrocked' -thatis,forcedtoabandon theirreligiouscommunities andliveasordinaryworkers.

Ontopofthepersecution ofBishops,priestsandReligious,theAlbaniancommunitieshaveconfiscated theCatholicpress,taken overtheCatholicschools andkindergartens,anderasedeveryvestigeofCatholic ActionandCatholicsocial welfarework.

Thecrowningblowcame

whentheCatholicChurch inAlbaniawas"nationalised,"alldirectcommunicationwiththeVaticanforbidden,andallecclesiastical appointmentsmadesubject totheapprovaloftheTiranagovernment.

PersecutionoftheCatholicChurchhascontrasted withtherelativelygentle treatmentaccordedtheAlbanianOrthodoxchurch, especiallyafteritbowedto pressureandagreedtoreunionwiththeMoscow patriarchateoftheRussian Orthodoxchurch.TheMajorityoftheAlbaniansare Mohammedans-about67 percent.The,Orthodox constitutethenextlargest group.Catholicsformabout tenpercentofthepopulation.
