Newshasbeenreceived fromIrelandofthedeathon March21atGlasson,Co. Westmead,ofMrs.Catherine O'Mara,motheroftheRev. P.O'Mara,ofSt.Mary's Cathedralstaff. DeceasedwasbornatBallinsloe,Co.Galway,72years ago.MarryingJohnO'Mara in1908shemovedwithhim tohisfarminGalwaywhere therestofherlifewas spent. Mrs.O'Maraissurvived byherhusband,now81,. yearsofage,foursonsand twodaughters.Shehadbeen infailinghealthforsome time.

SolemnRequiemMassfor thereposeofhersoulwas offeredintheChurchof theImmaculateConception, Glasson.

Apartfromvisitationof parishhomes,legionaries calledonpatientsinhospitals,homesfortheaged, children'shomes,andaninstitutionfornativegirls. Heretheychattertothe lonely,dolittlechoresfor theinmates,and,aboveall, trytogivespiritualhelp whereitisneeded.

Thisgoodapostolicwork isbeingdone,forthemost part,bypeopleundistinguishedbyoutstandingtalents;bypeoplewhohave thesimpleintentionofbeing usefultoOurLadyinthe battleforsouls.Many morerecruitsareneededto servebeneaththestandard ofMary'slegioninthis giganticstruggleagainstthe forcesofevil.

hislifeforhiscountryin theR.A.A.F.Onesuchfamilyhasalreadygivena statueofOurLadyinmemoryofasonandbrother pilotwhowaskilledinan aircraftcrash,andnowthe Rosaryissaidtwicedaily beforeit-atlunchtimeby permanent-forcemembers, andintheeveningbythe NationalServicetrainees.

Ourobjectiveistogive thischapeleverythingaCatholicchapelshouldhaveto makeitacentreofreligion foralltheCatholicairmen whopassthroughPearce. Wefeelthatthisisimportant,andallthemoreurgent inviewofthefactthata greatnumberofouryoung menwillgettheirfirstexperienceofservicelifeas NationalServicetrainees.

Thestoryisonethat American-bornBishop AdolphNoser,S.V.D., formerBishopofAccra,on theGoldCoast,Africa,will learnatfirsthandwhenhe takesoverhisnewdutiesas VicarApostolicofAlexishafen.

AtAlexishafenitself, nearhereandoneofthe fivemissionjurisdictionsin easternNewGuinea,Bishop Noserwillseesignswhich indicate,notonlythatthe NewGuineamissionshave survivedanalmost100per centobliteration,butthat theyarenowinwhatappearstobeagoldenageof opportunityandpromise.

Fewmissionsanywhere weresothoroughlydestroyedduringthewaras werethoseofthislarge Pacificislandwherethe firstSocietyoftheDivine Wordmissionariesarrived fromSteyl,Holland,in 1896.WhentheJapanese surrendercamein1945,an estimated95percentofthe churches,schools,hospitals andothermissionbuildings alongthecoasthadbeen destroyed.Themissionaries wereinternedinconcentrationcampsandmanywere killedduringAlliedairattacks.

Theothermissionsin easternNewGuineaare, besidesAlexishafen,those ofPortMoresbyandSamarai.inPapua,theAustraliancolony;andWewak andAitape,whichlike Alexishafen,areinformer Germanterritoryunder Australiantrusteeship.

BoththeWewakandAitapemissionsofferother strikingevidencesofthe progressbeingmadeineasternNewGuineagenerally, wheretherearenow70,000 Catholicsoutofatotalpopulationofmorethanhalf amillion,eventhough

priestsnumberscarcelya hundred.

TheVicariateofWewak wasseparatedfromAlexishafenin1913andconfided totheSocietyoftheDivine Word.ThefirstVicarApostolic,BishopJosephLorks, wasshotbytheJapanese afterhehadgiven40years ofhislifetothemission.In hisplaceisBishopLeo Arkfeld,S.V.D.,anAmericansinhisfortieswhois anotedorganiserandmakesampleuseofautomobiles andaeroplanestoservice theterritoryunderhiscare.

InWewakalso,newconstructionsaretakingthe placeoftheruinsofthelast war.TheCatholicflockdispersedduringthehostilities hasagainbeenunited,and isnowbeingservedby38 priests,ofwhom16areAmericansand13Germans.On thesmallislandofKairiru isaschoolforcatechists andteacherswhichisex-

pectedtobecomeafruitful sourceofpriestlyvocations. Aminorseminaryisbeing built,neartheruinsofthe formercathedral,andplans arebeingmadeforanew andmorebeautifulcathedral.

InMay,1952,aportionof theterritoryoftheVicariateApostolicofWewak waserectedasthePrefectureApostolicofAitapeand confidedtotheAustralian FranciscanFathers,with Msgr.IgnatiusDoggert, O.F.M.servingasPrefect Apostolic.Inadditiontothe tenAustralianpriestsstaffingthemission,thereare tenItalianFranciscanswho wereexpelledfromCommunistChina.

TheAitapeprefecture has6,000Catholics.The prefecturealsomakesuse ofmodernmeansoftransportation,includingtheaeroplane,tomaintaincontacts withotherwiseinaccessible mountainregions.Here,as intheeasternNewGuinea areagenerally,thepromise isgreat,providedthatthe missionariesfindenough helpersandthenecessary fundstospreadtheirapostolicwork.

TheSwissFederalConstitutionof1874bars membersoftheSocietyof Jesusfromengagingineducationalworkorinthespiritualministry.Amongother discriminatoryfeatures,it alsoprohibitstheestablishmentofnewmonasteries andbanstheerectionof newbishopricswithoutgovernmentalpermission.The ritualslaughterofanimals, prescribedbyJewishdietarylaw,isalsooutlawed.

Inanswertoaparliamentaryinquiry,thegovernmentofZurichrecently reportedthediscoveryof 20Jesuitsinthecanton (province).Itnotedthat mostofthepriestswere engagedineditorialwork andstudentguidance-and

thuswithintheletterof 'thelaw-butannouncedit hadeffectedtheremovalof threemembersofthesocietyfoundservingas parishcurates.Thegovernmentsaiditremindedthe Jesuitsthatevengiving sermonsatMassesforstudentsisillegal,andpromisedtheparliamentitwould keepmembersoftheorder underregularsurveillance.

Christ'sResurrectionisthefoundationforthe joyoftheChristianlifeandthereasonforitshope, andofthesetwothingstheworldisindesperate need.Itistheheightoffatuitytosupposethatthe merecombinationorconflictofmaterialforceswill automaticallyproduceabetterworldorder.This isthegrossestlie,ofmaterialism.Theworldwill, neverbeanybetterthantheindividualswhoinhabitit,andtheindividual,thoughtosomeextent conditionedbyhismaterialenvironment,isyetsuperiortoit.Andtheindividualwillfindneitherhope norpeacenorjoyuntilheispreparedforthefundamentalhumility,whichseesmenasthecreaturesof GodandGodasthesupremeandpersonalLordof creation.Thisisthehareminimum.Itisthe' missionoftheChurchtoshowtheworldthemore splendidvisionofGodastheFatherofall.andmen asbearingtheintolerabledignityofsonshipachievedpreciselythroughtheDeath,andResurrectionof ChristOurLord.Theproblemoftherestoration ofpoliticalorderintheworldandofeconomicjustice,andindeed.therightingofallwrong,drives backultimatelytotherestorationofreligion.The v,orldwillnutrisefrontitsashesuntiltheindividual ispreparedforacompletechangeofheart.

TheArchbishop'sdeath wasannouncedbytheFides NewsAgency,amissioninformationorganinRome, whichstatedthatthenews wasbroughtby"awellinformedpersonwholeftAlbaniarecently."TheinformantreportedthatArchbishopPrennushi"diedafter tureandindignities."

ArchbishopPrennushi's deathleavesonlyoneCatholicprelateinAlbania78-year-oldBishopBernardineShlaku,ofPulati,who alsowasarrested,butwas subsequentlyreleasedfrom prisonbecauseofhisadvancedageandpoorhealth. Heisnowconfinedtohis residenceatKoderShen Gjergji,inthemountainsof northernAlbania.
