Twocountrybranches, NorthamandMundaring, sentdelegates,theremainMg32branchesbeingmetropolitan.Fervour,gratitude,enthusiasmandoptimismwerethekeynotesof discussionsduringthemeeting. Afterthediocesanspiritualdirector,theRev.T. Ahern,P.P.,hadopenedthe convention.withthesoc ciety'sprayers,andthepresident,Mr.J.F.Lynch.had extendedawarmwelcome toalldelegates,thebusiness ofthemeetingquicklyproceeded.
Thereportofthegeneral secretary,Mr.M.Foley,was receivedwithprolongedand well-meritedapplause.The reportopenedwithexpressionsofsinceregratitude fortheircontinuedinterest inthesocietytoHisGrace theArchbishopandHis
LordshipBishopGoody.Unstintedthankswerealsoofferedtothediocesandirector,FatherAhern,andthe twopriestconsultorsofthe Diocesanunion,theRev.E. CollinsandtheRev.J.Russell,fortheirhelpandguidance.
Listingthesociety'sactivitiesduringtheyear,the reportexpressedpleasure attheoutstandingmanner inwhichthedayofcontinuousRosarieswascarriedout lastPassionSunday:thealltimerecordnumberofmemberswhomadelastyear's enclosedRetreats-atotalof 140members,againstthe previousrecordof124;the recordattendanceofmembersandtheimposingarray ofbranchbannersatthe annualEucharisticprocessionatAquinascollege groundsontheFeastofthe KingshipofChrist;andthe
recordnumberofwellover 1,000membersinSt.Mary's CathedralattherecentannualJanuaryspiritualrally ofthesociety.
Mr.Foleyalsoexpressed thankstoallmembersand brancheswhohadsubscribedtothisyear'sbursary fundappeal,theresultof whichisgivenunderthe treasurer'sreport.
Verypleasingaspectsof MrFoley'sreportwereimprovedpercentageattendancesatthesociety's monthlyHolyCommunion andeveningDevotions,the percentageshavingincreasedfrom68percent.to731 percent.inthecaseof monthlyHolyCommunion, andfrom40percent.to48 percent.ateveningDevotions. Despitethelossofthree smallcountrybranches, whichhadbecomedefunct durifigtheyear.theestablishmentoffournewbranchesatApplecross,Yarloop, TuartHillandPinjarra, madethepresentstrength ofthesociety68branches, asagainstlastyear'sfigure of67.Membershipat3,274 adultsand934juniors,givingatotalof4,208,showsan

Thestandardoftheentire programmewasexcellent clearlyshowingtheeffects ofIrishcultureinour schoolsandinthelifeof city.Themusicaldirection oftheprogrammewasby theRevP.McCudden.

AftertheRosary,the Rev.R.J.McDonald,C.M. deliveredtheoccasionaladdress.Takingforhistext: "Theythatworkbyme shallnotsinandtheythat explainmeshallhavelife everlasting,"FatherMcDonaldspokeofthecontinuingpersecutionofthe LegioninChinaasreported inthedailynewspapers. Priestswereputontrial fortheoffenceoforganizingtheLegion.Deathor imprisonmentwasthelotof priestsandlaityaccusedof Legionactivity.Theforces inpowerinChinalooked upontheLegionastheir implacablefoe.Theywere rightinthat;itwastheir implacablefoeinthe struggleforthesoulsof men.Chinawaswitnessing onemorephaseinthecontinuingbattlebetweenMary andSatan.
Thatstrugglehadgoneon sincetheChurchbegan.In theagesofFaithitwas againsttheSaracenhordes whohaddespoiledtheHoly Places.Thecampaigns werecalledtheCrusades. Thosewhofoughtthem wereasconscionsofconsecratingthemselvesto MaryasweretheLegionariesoftoday.
Beforesettingoutthe knightwouldgotoa shrineofOurLady,would layhissworduponthe altarandpassthenightin vigil.Marylookedfor.the samespiritofdevotionand consecrationtoday,saidthe preacher,whentheenemy isnohumanfoebutone inspiredbySataninanew phaseoftheoldstruggle-MaryandSatan.
FatherMcDonaldspore ofthetwofoldopportunity providedbythe"Acies"thereviewofthesuccesses andfailuresofthepast yearandtoplanforthe comingone.Muchwasdone. Howmuchmoremight havebeendone.Howmuch waslost.Howmanyprayers remainedunsaid.Howmuch failedthroughrelianceupon self.Therewasanotherday.
Inthatletthembediligent inworkandferventin prayer.Theyshouldreally cooperatewithMarythat shemightaddstrengthto theirweakness.

Everydetailwascarried outwithgrace,dignityand solemnityallenhancedby thebeautifulrenderingof theGregorianchantbythe priestsandbythestudents ofSt.Charles'seminary.
