Typicallyand nobly MotherPerpetuahadobviouslydelayedherinsistentvisittoChapterheadquarterstotendDomMoreno.Herheadquartersat Subiaco,namedbyBishop, Salvado.wasthesoleBenedictinelinkforDomMorenaonhisdeath-bedonthe eveofhisreturntoSpain.

ForDomMorenohadreturnedtoEuropetorevisit hisbirthplace,Corella,in Spain,foraplannednationalwelcome.TheSpanishgovernment,attheirexpense,hadplannedtopublishthebulkofDomMoreno'schurchcompositions: anationaltributetoSpain *famedson.

Thenhewastorevisithis scenesofstudyinEurope. andlatertocrosstoU.S.A. Insistentdemandshadmade imperativethathismany compositionsbeprintedin America.

BeforeDomMorenohad leftAustraliahehadseen throughthepresstwonew publications,aworkthat hadinvolvedtremendous personalstrain,forevery note,asinallhispublished works,hadbeenbyhand, 4personallyprinted.Theexquisitefinesseandartistic masterlycompletionofall hismusicaloneattestnear perfectionofcraftsmanship.

FormusicwasDomMoreno'slife.AtCorella,Navarre,hewasbornonFeb. 17,1889.Fromhisfather, awatchmaker,heinherited thosesensitiveanddelicatelymouldedholdsandhis finetechnicalskill.Hewas baptisedAntonio.

FellowBenedictinesfrom sCorellaattestthatatthe ageof8heplayedthepiccolowithhisagedseniors inthelocalhighlyesteemedorchestraandband,and didnothesitatetonoteany ofhisseniors'musicalflaws!

DomResa.thelocalchurch organistandmusicconduc,tor,wasquitecapable,and earlytaughtAntoniothe pianoandevenmusical composition.

TheAbbeyatNewNorciato-daytreasuresacompositionfromAntonio,aged 46:alittleexquisitegem

senttoandpreservedby AbbotTorres.ForAntonio hadjoinedtheBenedictines attheageof15asajunior,atMiracle,anAbbey nearthePyrenees.

InOctober,1906,hecrossedtoSt.Julian'smonastery,Geneva,andwasprofessedayearlaterasDom Stephen.Byarareprivilegethisyear'snovitiatewas

music,especiallyinorchestration.Fromeachofthe specialmusicalinstrument professors,andintheMunichOperahouse,where thereweremanysuchspecialists,hereceivedspecial tuition.Oneofhiscompositionswassenttothe "Odeon,"ararehallmarkof successforastudent.For DomMorenowasarealartist:inallhisworksare thoselittletouchesthatbespeakgenius.

ThepresentPope.His HolinessPiusXII,wasat thattimeMonsignorPacelli, NuncioatMunich.Dom Morenowashonouredby theNuncio'sfriendship,andoftendinedwithhim.Once DomMorenoactedasspecialcourierfromtheNuncioinMunichtoRome-reservedcoach,insignia,and all.

Thechapel,dedicatedto theMostHolyTrinity,will bethethirdCannelinAustralasiatobeconsecrated. Thehighaltarwasconsecratedin1942. Masswillbeofferedatthe smallmarblealtardonated bythefriendsofCarmel.

DomarrivedatNewNorciaonDec.7,1908.He wasappointedchoirmaster thatverymidday,andpreparedfortheHighMassof thegreatfeastoftheImmaculateConceptionnext day.Hiscolleaguesrecall vividlythattheMasswas "TeDeum,"Perosi,afitting introduction.

ThoseearlyyearsatNew NorciasawDomMoreno composingatfeverheat: compositionsflowedfroma fertile,incessantlyactive brain.

HewasordainedinSeptember,1913,byBishop Torres,-ThosedaysNew Norciahadthreestarsofthe firstmagnitude:theelegant,saintly,learned,extremelyenergeticandconstructiveBishopTorres;the versatileandcreativemaster-painter,DomLesmes, andtheyouthfulcomposer, organistandconductor,Dom Moreno.

In1919BishopTorres sentDomMorenotoMunich toperfecthistechniquein

FromMunichDomMorenoreturnedtotheWest withitsrichestmusicallibraryprobably-classical,orchestral,andecclesiastical.

MentionaboveofhispresentHolinessthePoperecallsthatLordAbbotCatalanonavisittoHisHolinessPiusXI.,presenteda boundcopyofDomMoreno's"Offertoriesforthe Year."HisHoliness,a skilledmusician,softly sangtohimselfquiteafew excerpts,andthensmilingly exclaimed:"Bello!Bello!" (Beautiful!Reallybeautiful!).

Forthefirstsixmonths of1951FredbecamepresidentofNedlands,aposthe wasforcedtorelinquish whenstudiesincreased.At thistime,Fredhadalso gainedthedistinctionof beingelectedasamember oftheDiocesanExecutiVe. fromwhichpositionhealso founditnecessarytoresign.

Oneday-mybrothersand Idecidedtodoasightseeingandfishingtourofthe islands.Westartedoffearly toseeiftherewereany peacocksorpeahensonthe way(fortheyareonlyseen earlyinthemorning).The distancewehadtocover wasabouteightmilesthere andback,andhalfofitwas overboggyhills. Wereachedourdestinationat10.30afteravery hardride.Itwasdelightfultoseeoncemore thecrystalclearwaterin thetinycoveandthedifferenttypesoffishswimmingaround.Thecoralon therackswasmostcolourful andtherock-crabshad stripesontheirshells.Most familiarwerethebuffalo bream,theirdarkshapes glidingalong.Theyarevery quickforwethrewsome breadontopofthewater, andwithaswishand splashoftheirtailsitwas gone. Wehadlunchatabout

12o'clockandthefishhad awonderfulfeastofthe crustsandotherscraps whichwethrewintothe water.Itwastimewesettleddowntofishingnow.I startedoffbycatchinga middle-sizedbreamanda fewparrotfish.Weallcaught parrotfishbythedozen, butwehadtothrowthem back,fortheyweretoo small.Therewereplentyof footballersandJohnny Dory,butthosebreamwere moreinteresting.
