Afterthediscussion,the conferenceresumed.,and Mr.Malonegaveaverydirectandinterestinglecture toassistinjudgingtheproblem.Hesaidthatreading wasaverywideanddeep subjectandoneonwhich therewasgreatdivergence ofopinion.

Readingcouldbedivided intotwostages:acquiring thedesiretoread,andselectingwhhttoread.From veryearlyinlifethisdesire arose,butwhetherthedesirepersistedfnlaterlife wasanothermatter.It restedfirstofallonthe standardofliteraturethey 'wereallowedtoread;then theywereguidedthrough schoolyearsbytheirteachers,andperhapsgaineda realinterestinreading.If theywerefortunate,thedesiretoreaddidpersistinto thegrowing-upyears.

AdvantageofBooks

Mr.Malonethenoutlined thegreatadvantagesof reading.Theygainedbroaderandmoretolerantideas aboutotherpeople,shesaid; theygainedinformation aboutotherplacesinthe world,andcustomsofother nations.Graduallythey becamelessnarrowintheir views;theyreadforeducationalpurposesandforpleasure.Theirpersonalities wereimprovedanddeepened,theirvocabularyincreased,andtheylostmuchof theirsell-consciousnessand wereabletoconverseintelligentlywithalmostanyone onanysubject.

Inthematterofthechoice ofbooks,Mr.Malonesaid thattheboundsofdecency hadnotchangedsincethe Victorianera.Butthemethodofpresentationwasdifferent.Obviously,thecapacityforbeingshocked variedfromonecenturyto anotherandfrompersonto person.Hecompareddifferentopinionsonthesame author.

Accordingtothe1947 census,19,088,839people arelivingon5,963,059acres ofland.Between15and16 millionofthesepeopledependdirectlyonthesoilfor theirliving.Thus,although thebulkofitspopulationls rural,Egypthasagreater densityofpopulationthan thehighlyindustrialised countriesofEurope.The problemis,therefore,selfevident.Howfeedapopulationwhichhasincreased by96.8percentinthelast fiftyyears,whenlandfitfor tilling,alreadyscanty,has onlyincreasedby12per cent?
