Theeighthnewchurchbuildingopened intheArchdioceseduringthepasttwo monthswastheschool-churchofSt.Benedict,Applecross,whichwasblessedbyHis GracetheArchbishoponFeb.15.Thedecorationandfurnishings,saidtheArchibishop,showedexquisiteliturgicaltaste.

HisGracewasintroducedhadbeenacquiredatavery bytheRev.A.KLynch,reasonableprice.Within parishpriest,whothankedthepastfewyearsFather Mr.andMrs.J.Smith,ofLynchhaddecidedtoacTweedaleRoadforhavingquiretwomoreblocksand, givenaroomintheirhomeeventhoughthepricewas foruseasanoratoryandveryhigh,hewasverywise Mrs.J.StackoftheHotelinacquiringasmuchland Majesticforhavingprovid-aspossible. edhimwithahomeduringModernPioneers thepasteightmonths.

saidHisGrace.werealso pioneers..Itwasanew suburbinarapidlyexpand- ingcity,butthey,too,hadfaithandcourageandcon- fidenceinProvidenceandthegenerosityofthepeople. Futuregenerationswould begratefultothemfor havinglaidsuchsolidand firmfoundationsinSt.Benedict's,Applecross.

Theschool,hecontinued, wouldbestaffedbythe SistersofNotreDamedes Missions,whoneededno introduction.Theywould bringwiththemthesplend- edtraditionsthatcharacterisedtheirschoolsevery-where,andwiththeco-ope- rationofthechildrenand parents,HisGraceassured thepeoplethattherewould beaveryhighstandardand averyspecialtone-astandardandatoneofwhich theparishofApplecrosswouldhavereasontobe prouderandprouderasthe yearswentby.

Theformermembersof Congresshadalready achievedfameasaplaywright,author,editorand lecturerandforeigncorrespondentwhenshewasreceivedintotheCatholic ChurchatSt.Patrick's CathedralinNewYorkin February.1946.Formerly anEpiscopalian,Mrs.Luce hadbeeninstructedby Bishop,thenMsgr.Fulton J.Sheen,whowasatthat timeprofessorofphilosophy attheCatholicUniversity ofAmericahere.

Fiveofthesixhammerthrowdivisionswerewon byY.C.W.aswasalsothe caseinthehop-step-and jumps.Eveninthemile, whichwasrunonthepreviousSaturday,onlytwo divisionswerelost.This departmenthasalwaysbee lookeduponastheY.C.W.'s greatestweakness.Itishoweverawoundthatis quicklyhealing,andifsupportisgiventothewinter distanceseason,itwillbecomeaY.C.W.stronghold.

St.Ouenisavillagein northernFrancewhose 2,300soulsekeoutaliving inthejuteindustry.Butit isn'tmuchofaliving,and somehowamajorityofthe peoplehavejoinedupwith theCommunistPartyin theirsearchforthebetter things.Thesmallnumber stillgoingtochurchare mostlyelderlypeople.

SowhenFatherJan Klueck-aDutchpriestwho hasbeenworkinginFrance forseveralyears-wasappointedcureofSt.Ouen, hishopesweren'ttoohigh. Buthedidadoptacheerful attitudeonhiswaytothe de-christianizedvillage.

Onhisarrival,however, FatherKlueckfoundthe wholevillageonhandto greetitsnewparishpriest. Thereceptioncommitteewas headedbytheCommunist mayor,JeanMartin,and includedthewholeRed towncouncil.

Afterathoroughlycordial welcomebyMr.Martin, FatherKlueckwascheered bythewholepopulationand ledinaprocessionthrough thevillage.TheCommunist brassbandledtheway,the mayorwalkedbesidehim,

girlstookjobstogetherina televisionfactory.Every morningtheyrosevery early,fortheyhadalong distancetotravel,andthey brokethejourneytohear MassandreceiveHolyCommunioninaconventchapel. Theywerewelldressed, wellspoken,andtheyused make-up.Therewasnothing whichdistinguishedthem fromthethousandsofother girlsontheirwaytofactoriesandoffices.Theyhad hadpreciseinstructionson thecoursetheyweretopursue.Itwasnotpartof theirmissiontobeprow,gandists.Theirjobwasnot to"preach,"notevenprimarilytoletCatholicteaching"infiltrate"intoconversations.Theirmandatewas tobe"witnessestoChrist" throughtheforceofexample.Theyweretoshow Christianteachinginaction, leavingtheirfellow-workers todiscoverforthemselves thesourcethatinspiredit.

TheChristmascribswere madeforallthehousesand chapel,andintheparish churchthecribwasthe mostbeautiful;madebya convertschoolmaster.The ChristmasMasseswere crowded;theCommunists stoodatthebackofthe Churchandwatched.They said:"Nextyearthischurch willbeempty."Weeven hadtheChristmasplaybutatoneo'clockinthe middleofthedaywhenthe Communistswereeating theirriceandrarelyvisited us. AftertheFeastofthePurificationthestormbroke andweenteredonalong periodoffiercepersecution. ForthreemonthsMasswas forbidden,andCatholics andProtestantshadtostudy Communistdoctrine;"wash theirbrains."TheComMunistsprophesiedthatat theendofthattime,there wouldbenomoreChristians. Andthechiefofthepolice threatened:"Allthatare notwithus,willbeshot!" ButwhentheMasswaspermittedagain,theChristians flockedtothechurch-even thelazyones!

Thentherewasthe Christplay,arealfamily affair.Thebabiesformed thechoir.Wehadthree performances,thefirsta glorifieddressrehearsalfor inmatesofthehouse, secondfortheoutside Christians,andthirdfor ourpaganfriends.Thehall wascrowdedforeachperformance,andthepagans weremostappreciative.
