ThreeThingsNeeded

Forthemaintenanceof goodorder;andthepreservationofsociety,three thingswererequired-au-thority,liberty,religion.In otherwords,theState,the individual,theChurch. Thosethreeeachinitsown sphere,andsoarrangedin itsrelationtotheothers thatallmightactharmoniously;thesethreeconstitutedtheidealgovernment. Statesmen,saidtheArchbishop,werebusyto-day planningareorganisationof theworld.Theywereright inthinkingthatthecoreof

IfthehistoryofChristendomwasstudiedcloselyin thelightofultimatecauses, itwouldbefoundthatthe originofallsocialdisinte_ grationwhichhadreached itsclimaxinourdaywas(ttheschoolhadbeenrenderthatsuccessivegenerations hadstriventosettheprofessionandpracticeofthe Christianfaithinaphilosophyoflivingalientothe Christianethic.

TributetoBrothers

Thehopeoftheworldlay inunitingthepracticeof Christianitytoanoutlook onlifeconsistentwith Christianity.Anditwas preciselythefunctionof Christianeducationtoimparttoyouthsuchanoutlook. "Anditisbecausewebelievethat,"continuedHis Grace,"andhavethecourageofourconvictions,that weareassembledheretodaytoblessthisChristian educationcentre.Thatis thereasonwhytheChristianBrothershavegraciouslyacceptedourinvitationto staffthisschool-theChristianBrothers,renowned throughouttheworld-the newaswellastheold-as secondtononeasabodyof educatorsandeducated men:theChristianBrothers,

TheArchbishopsaidthat ednecessarybecausetheaccomodationintheother boys'schoolsinthemetropolitanareawasmuchovertaxed.Thatschool,hesaid, wouldserve,forthetime being,thewholeregioneast oftheCauseway.comprisingnineparishes.

Theywerefortunatein havingsecuredtheservices oftheChristianBrothers whowouldbringwiththem toEastVictoriaParkthe splendidtraditionsthat characterisedtheirschools everywhere.

HisGracepaidatribute tothesplendidworkof FatherO'Connorinconnectionwiththebuildingof theschool.FatherO'Connor,hesaid,hadgivenunselfishlyofhis.timeand energyinordertokeep downcosts.Thathehad succeededwasveryevident fromthefactthat,sucha fineschoolhadcostonly £6,400.Inthankinghim, theArchbishopcongratulatedhimonhisfineachievement.

Mgr.J.T.McMahon'sbook, "PraytheMass,"havebeen paidbythepublisherstbthe headofficeoftheSocietyfor thePropagationoftheFaith inSydney.Wordhascome tohandthattheseroyalties amountedtoL394s10dfor theyear1952. ThisfigurecannotbeaddedtothetotalfigureforMissionaidintheArchdiocese ofPerth,becauseitdoesnot passthroughthediocesan office.Someacknowledgment,however,isduetothis actofgenerositytotheMissions,whichovertheyears hasamountedtoaconsiderablesumofmoneyandhas greatlyincreasedthespiritualgoodofwhichthe book,"PraytheMass,"has beentheinstrument.

At8p.m.eachMonday eveningalittlegroupof Catholicmenandwomen gatherinasmallroomsituatedintheBankofNew SouthWaleschambers,St. George'sterrace.Theycall themselves"TheTherrysociety"-Therry,thenameof thepioneerpriestofAustralia,isparticularlysignificantwhenonehasregard forthenatureofthesociety'swork.Andwhatis thenatureofthiswork?

TheTherrysocietyhas,as itsgeneralaim,theformationofabodyoflayapostleswho,bytheirquestfor personalholinessandtechnicalexcellence,willstrive forthere-christianisingof entertainment,moreespeciallythatofthe-theatre.

Thisdoesnotmeanthat thesocietyisinterestedonly inplayswithareligious theme.Thattheyshould fostertheproductionof,and patronageat,goodwholesometheatricalentertainmentistheendeavourof Therries.Howdoesthis affectyou"
