Erectedcanonicallyasaparishonly threeyearsago,Gosnellsmarkedoutstandingprogressunderitsfirstpastor,theRev.J. Carmody,whenanewschoolandpresbytery a'costing£8,000wereblessedandopenedby theMostRev.L.J.Goody,AuxiliaryBishop, onJan.25.

Theschool,ahandsome designinbrickandtile, comprisestwoclassrooms, aSisters'office,entranceporch andwideverandah.Situated ontheAlbanyHighway, schoolandpresbyteryarein thesameblockasthe church.Afeatureofthenew buildingsisthegenerousfenestrationsetinsteel p.frames.

IntroducingHisLordship. BishopGoody,FatherCarmodyoutlined'thehistoryof theprogressofthebuildings. Whenitwasrealisedthat thecontractpricewouldbe £10,000,acommitteewas formedwhichundertookthe tasaofsub-contracting.

4 Throughthisagencythe buildingshadbeencompletedforabout£8,000.Father Carmodyalsopaidtribute tothebusybeeswhohad preparedthegroundsand Luildingsfortheopening.

BishopGoodysaidthatin theUnitedNationscharter, towhichallfreenations (includingAustralia)subscribeditwasagreedthat educationshouldbefree:

thatitshouldbedirectedto the_fulldevelopmentof humanpersonality:andthat itshouldbeinaccordance withthewishesofparents. SinceAustraliasubscribed tothosepointsitshouldput themintopracticeinregard tothenon-Governmental schoolsinWesternAustralia.

ThecosttotheState, continuedHisLordship,for educationcateringfor71,000 childrenwouldbeabout £4,000,000thisyear.The privateschoolscateredfor 23,500children-one-third ofthenumbercateredfor bytheState.Ofthosechildrentwo-thirdsattended Catholicschools.

ThatmeantthattheCatholicschoolsweresavingthe State£850,000inW.A. alone.Theyhadtheequivalentof700classrooms andmorethan700teachers.

Iftheywereputtoit, statedtheBishop,theGovernmentschoolscouldnot accommodatetheCatholic school-children.Andapart fromthatconsideration,it wouldbemoreeconomical

toaidthechildrenin existingnon-Governmental schoolsthantotrytocater forthemfullyintheState schoolsystem.

HisLordshipinstanced thekindergartenswhich werenon-Stateschoolsbut wereassistedfinanciallyby theState.Why,heasked, couldnottheStateprovide forCatholicandotherprivateschools,also?

Catholics,heconcluded, didnotrelishpayinghuge sumsofmoneyforatypeof educationtheycouldcons-

cientiouslyacceptbut,being convincedthateducation withoutreligiondidnothelp to"developthefullhuman personality,"theyfeltconstrainedinconscienceto maintaintheirownschool system,nothwithstanding thesacrificesinvolved.

AbbotDescribes NativeHouses ToCost£24,000

OnJan.24,theRt.Rev.G.Gomez, O.S.B.,LordAbbotofNewNorcia,solemnly blessedandopenedanewschoolanddormitoryfornative,girlsattheMission.The buildingscost£3,200.Itisannouncedthat aplantobuildnativecottagesatacostexceeding£24,000willcommenceshortly.

Thebuildings,whichrepresentadditionstotheexistingorphanageofSt.Joseph,areoftheBoucher type,withtubularsteel frameworkandcorrugated iron,linedwithplasterboardandSwedishhardboard.

Theclassroomblockis55 feetby22,partitionedby slidingdoorsintothree schoolrooms.Thepartitionsswingbacktoforma hall.Thedormitory,50 feetby22,comprisesa wardof20beds,abedrogm, cloakroom,andtoiletfacilities.Thebuildingshave an11ft.verandah.

AspokesmanoftheBenedictineAbbeystatedthat theadditionstothenative girls'orphanagerepresented thefirstmoveinamaster plantoimprovetheliving conditionsofthenatives.

Theschoolistheresultof aschemeputinmotiona yearagobytheArchbishop toprovideadiocesanschool withmoderatefeesforthe educationofboysuptoand includingtheJuniorcertificatestandardlivingprimarilyinthedistrictseastof theCauseway.

TheparishesofEastVictoriaPark,VictoriaPark, SouthPerth,Kensington, Belmont.Armadale,GosnellsandCarlislewillcontributetothecostofthe buildingandthemaintenanceoftheschool.The parishpriestshavebeen formedintoacommitteeof managementandthetreasurer,theRev.F.O'Connor, hassupervisedtheworkon thebuilding.

ThreeChristianBrothers, headedbytheRev.Brother Quirk,willstafftheschool whichthisyearwillcater forladsinthefourth,fifth andsixthstandards.Further extensionstotheschoolwill

lookingtheMission,ata costexceeding£24,000. Withinamonththerepairingandmodernisingofexistingbuildingswillhave commenced.Theoldnative cottagesneartheCathedral willbedemolished.

Thenewcottageswill havefourroomswithverandah,bathroom,andlaundry.Eachwillcost£2,000. Itispossibleforeducation tobe(1)free,(2)encompassspiritualdevelopment ofthefullhumanpersonalityand(3),beinaccordancewithparents'choice andwishes.Thisissoin England,Scotland,Eireand Holland,amongstprogressivecountriesineducation. ThusEnglishEducationAct 7and8,GeorgeVI.1944(Britain's1944PostWar PlanforEducation)finds about90percent.ofthe wholecostsofChurch schools,includingCatholic schools,andevenpaysState teachers'salariestonuns, priestsandreligiousbrothers.The1944Actstates:

Itispossibletogrant Stateaidtoindependently administeredschools.Itis alreadydoneinWestern Australiainrespectofthe Kindergartenunion,which receivesanannualState grantof£16,000ayearto educateabout1,000children,andhashadaRoyal Commissionexamineit, whichmayverywellrecommendthatfinancialhelp toitmaybeincreasedand anextensionmadetohelp otherschoolswhichrunkindergartens,includingCatholic,ChurchofEngland,and othersuchindependent schools.

BrotherIldephonsuswas officiallywelcomedbythe 'LordAbbotandtheBenedictinecommunityonJan.25.

Itwillberecalledthat duringthewartheDrysdale RiverMissionwasbombed byJapaneseplanes.During oneraid,FatherThomas waskilled,andanother priestburiedinaslittrench. Whenthechurchcaught alight,BrotherIldephonsus leftsheltertosavethe BlessedSacrament.

Lateratruckinwhichhe hadbeencartingsandwasmachine-gunnedandset afirebyincendiarybombs. BrotherIldephonsusagain riskedhislifetoextinguish theburningtruck.

Pope'sCrusade

SpiritualTraining

Andso,in1942.thesetwo perfectionistsinmusicentereduponthelifeofreligiousperfection,andtheGay twinsbecameSisterJeanne MadeleineandSisterFrancisTerese.Theybrought withthemtotheirnew modeoflifenotonlytheir remarkablemusicaltalents, butalsotheircheerfuldispositionsandtheirunlimitedcapacityforhardwork. Nodoubtattheiragethey foundtheminutiaeofthe novitiateirksomeattimes.

However,theyentered intoitsspiritwiththoroughness,andsetaboutits observancewithasteadfastnessandcheerfulnessthat wereaninspirationtoall.

Walkinginthewayoftheir greatfounder,thePoverello ofAssisi,theyexperienced theburdensofanaustere life;and,likehim,they learnedtolookuponthe worldasagreatsymphony interpretingformanthe

wisdomofGod.

beautyandgoodnessandmotherandblindfatherhad beenvisitingthemforafew days,andaccompaniedthem ontheirweeklytriptoChicago.Allwentwell,but astheynearedMilwaukee inthelateafternoonthey encounteredthecity'srecordsnowstorm.Withhundredsofotherstheywere strandedintherailroadstation,foralltransportation hadcometoadeadstop. Whileimprovingtheir ownartistry,thesisters were,andare,membersof thefacultyofCardinal StritchcollegeinMilwaukee,wheretheyfollowthe communitylifeofprayer, workandstudy,spreading sunshinearoundthemby theircheerfulenergy.

Inadditiontoteaching musicatthecollege,they spendadayeachweekat St.John'sSchoolforthe Deaf,wherechildrenfrom everypartofthecountry areaidedbymusicalvibratorytraining.Thedeafchildrenpresstheirhands againstthepiano(thetots sitontopofit),andthus learnto"listen"tothestress andrhythminordertoimpartflexibilitytotheraucousmonotonespeechthat mostdeafchildrencanbe taught.Instructionofthis kinddemandsagreatfund ofpatienceandsympathy, butitalsoaffordsgreatconsolationtothesesistersto beabletohelpotherswho areunfortunate.Andit mustbeaninspirationto thechildrentoseeinthe sistersaproofthatnature's hapdicapsdonotspellinevitabledefeat.

Awiderhorizonopened uponthesisters'lifeacoupleofyearsago.Their

TheGay'sbenefactorhad asurpriseafewweekslater. Whentherecordingswere beingmadeheperceivedat oncethathewaslistening totheperformanceofnoordinarymusicians.Suchartistrydeservedwidepublicity,hedetermined.Duringthesubsequentmonths heespousedthecausewith hiscustomaryenergy.In co-operationwiththeSistersofSt.FrancisofAssisi heorganisedtheConlinRe_ cordcompanyofMilwaukee forthedistributionofthe phonographrecordsknown asthe"ConventSeriesAlbum."Thiscontainsfour two-sidedrecordsplayedby theGay.sisters,presenting sevenfavouriteclassicsand twooftheirowncompositions.Thethousandsof recordsalreadydistributed testifytotheirpopularity. IntheopeningsectionoftheConstitution,the historyoftheEucharisticFastissketchedatfair lengthandthestrictnessofthelawstronglyemphasised.

Withoneimportantmodificationconcerningthe useofwater,thetenoroftheecclesiasticallawis maintained,asformulatedintheCodeofCanonLaw.

Concessionsaremade,however,infavourof priestsandfatihful,whofindthemselvesinparticularcircumstances,andalsoinviewofeveningMasses,whichmaynowbeauthorisedeverywherebythe localBishopswithincertainlimits.

PiusX.,itisobserved,mitigatedtheEucharisticFast infavourofthesick;butmodernconditionsaresuchasto movethePontiffnowgloriouslyreigningtoofferthe furtherfacilitiesforHolyCommuniondetailedinthis documentinfavourofcertaincategoriesofpeoplewho wouldfindCommunionverydifficultorbedeterredfrom Communion,ifthelawoffasthadtobealwaysobserved asheretofore.

SodeclaredArchbishop DenisE.Hurley,O.M.I.,of Durban,inanaddresstothe DurbanParents'association, inwhichhechargedthat whiteSouthAfricanshave been"behavingverymuch likechildrenintheirrelationswithotherraces."He stressedthatthesolutionof theraceproblemdidnotdependprimarilyuponpoliticians,butcalledforinstillinganewpublicopinion thatwouldlookuponnonEuropeansashumanbeings withbasicrights.

ArchbishopHurleysaid thereweretwoconstructive approachestotheproblem. Onewascompleteterritorialseparation,whichimpliedtheseparationofraces intodifferentterritoriesand thegradualeliminationof thenon-EuropeanastheunskilledlabourerinEuropeanterritory.Theother wasintegration,which meantembarkingonapolicyofconcedingbydegrees civilisedlivingtonon-EuropeansinSouthAfricawhile allowingthesocialrelations betweenmembersofdifferHarvestofRiots entracestotakecareof themselves.
