TOKYO,Dec.18.-Sevenofthe14diocesanpriestsfromAustraliawhovolunteeredformissionaryworkinJapanafterthewar havecompletedtheirfive-yearservicehere, andhaveleftfortheirhomedioceses.

FivebelongtothearchdioceseofSydney:Fathers KennethByrne,JohnCullinane,EamonnDundon (nativeofCarlow,Ireland), PeterFarrelly(nativeof Virginia,CountryCavan, Ireland),ThomasFennell (nativeofCraiguecullen, Leix,Ireland).Two,Fathers JohnCurranandKevin FlynnbelongtothePort Pixie,formerlyPortAugusta,diocese.Threeofthe priestsworkedinNagasaki, twoinOsakaandtwoin thedioceseofYokohama.

FatherByrneestablished theLegioninatom-bombed UrakamiparishinNagasaki,whileFatherFlynn organizedreliefworkinthe samediocese.Asdirectorof charitiesinOsaka,Father Fennellwasaleaderinrelievingdistressinthat hard-hitcityduringthe firstyearsafterthewar andwaslargelyresponsible fordevelopingtwolarge Catholicorphanages.Father Cullinanefoundedthefirst Catholicparochialschoolin

Onthefirstdayofthe exposition50,000filed throughthecathedraltoveneratetheSaint'sremains. Itisexpectedthatamillion ormorewilldosobefore theceremoniesdrawtoa closeonJanuary3.

TheSaint'sbodyhas shrunkenconsiderablyin the400yearssincehis death.Oncebelievedto

measurefivefeet,three inches,thebodyisnowonly fourfeetlong.Thefleshis completelydriedupandthe skinadherescloselytothe bones.

Thetoesareclearand distinctandthenervefibres arevisible.Theeyeshave notassumedtheshapeof holes.Onlythelidsappear tightlyclosed.Thenoseis considerablyreducedinsize, buthaspreserveditsshape.

Thelefthandrestsonthe chestandthefingersare distinct,thoughreducedin sizebecauseofthedrying upofthefleshandveins.

Againthisyearapupilof theGoomallingPresentation conventhadthedistinction ofwinningaGovernment scholarship.Successfulcandidateonthisoccasionwas littleJanetMcKenna,and congratulationsareoffered tobothherandhertutors.

LONDON,Dec.18 NC).-Father OwenFrancisDudley,oneofthebestknown CatholicnovelistsandpreachersintheEnglish-speakingworld,diedhere(Dec.8)at theageof70.For30yearsuptohisretirementin1947,hehadheldthelimelight aslecturer,missioner,andasoneofthe mostoutspokenandmostquotedofCatholic publicists.

FatherDudley'sbest-seller,"TheMasterfulMonk," ranintohundredsofthousandsofcopies.Otherworks included"TheComingof theMonster,""WillMenbe likeGods?"and"The ShadowontheEarth."

Onhislastvisittothe UnitedStates,onhisway homefromasuccessfultour ofAustralia,hewaselected anhonorarymembersof theInternationalMark TwainSocietyinappreciationofhislastnovel,"You andThousandslikeYou."

FatherDudleycovered over100,000milesin193839lecturinginAustralia, NewZealandandthe UnitedStates.

AconvertedAnglican clergyman,FatherDudley retiredfiveyearsagoas superioroftheCatholicMissionarySociety,agroupof priestswhospendtheir

liveswanderingthrough themoreisolatedandless CatholicareasofEngland andWalespreaching,and administeringtheSacraments.Becauseofhisgreat giftshetravelledmuch furtherthanmost.and manyhundredsowedtheir conversiondirectlytohim.

FatherDudleywasa dramaticpreachercapable ofholdingaudiencesnot onlyinchurchesandpublic hallsbutalsoinmarketplacesandotheropen-air sites.Hiswritings,manyof whichweretranslatedinto ascoreoflanguagesand transcribedinBraille,were alsoinadirect,clearand simplemodernstyle.

FatherDudleybecamea Catholicafterfouryearsas aChurchofEnglandminister,studiedforthe priesthoodinRomeand wasordainedtherein1917.

ThecampaignofChristianleaveningundertakenbytheJOC (YoungChristianWorkers)inthemidstofthelabouringmassesof thebigindustrialcitiesofFrancehasadmittedlymetwithconsiderablesuccess.Butaftertenorfifteenyearsofunremitting work,markedbydeeplysupernaturalcharityandakeensenseof therealitiesoftheirsocialproblems,thespiritualcounsellorsand officersoftheJocistmovementhavefoundthemselvesconfronted withadisturbingsituationoffact.

UnquestionablytheJOChadbreathednewlifeinto Labourcirclesandwonback totheChurchasplendid elitefromtherankandfile. Butrecentdevelopmentsin thefieldhavebeenclamouringurgentlyforattention.

Incertainareaswhere lossestotheChurchhad beenespeciallyheavy,only aninsignificantfewyoung peopleandadultshadbeen reclaimedforChristianity. AtacentrelikeMontreuilsous-Bois(Seine)notmore thananestimatedthirty adultworkmenwerefully practisingChristiansamong apopulationof80,000.

LostVitalContact

Oftheindividualconverts toChristianityfromthe heartoftheproletarian masses,somewereadopted withoutreservationbythe parish,gradLallyabsorbing itsspiritandmakingtheir ownitscharacteristicexteriorpracticeandspiritual attitudes.Itwasnotlong beforetheylostallvital contactwiththepaganmassesfromwhichtheyhad beenrescued.

withinthetraditionalCatholiccongregation,which lookeduponthemwith suspicionorembarrassment, Theyfellaway,finally, treasuringonlytheirhomesicknessfor"aChristianity nearertheGospelidealand lessbourgeois."Inneither casecouldmethodshitherto adoptedberelieduponto makeanylastingimpression onthesecularisedworking classasawhole.

TwoPlansNeeded

Here,then,werethefactualelementsatthebaseof aseriousproblem.Should thetraditionalstructureof theparishbe"adapted"and substantiallymadeover?Or shouldanewvarietyof "Christiancommunity"be organised?Bothsolutions werefoundtobeimperative,andhavecalledinto beingtwoconvergingbut entirelydistinctplansof action.

Ontheonehand,aneffortisbeingmadetorejuvenatethetypicalparish andtomakeitmoreaccommodating,withaview toreadierassimilationof recentconvertsfrom"heathOtherconverts,ontheendom."Prevailingfeesand contrary,remainedintima-"class"distinctionsatrelitelyattachedtotheirprofes-giousceremoniessuchas sionalmilieu,butpromptlymarriagesandfuneralsare foundthemselvesillateasebeingabolished.Theliturgy

Thismissionarywork, whichcanbeunderstood onlybycomparingitwith aFatherdeNobili'sapostolateamongtheBrahmins oraPeredeFoucauld's labourswiththeMoslem Touaregs,hasyieldeninitial fruitsfarbeyondanyone's brightestexpectations.After twoorthreeyearsonthe jobinafactoryorlivingin theworkmen'ssectionof thetown,thesefifteen priestsofthe"ParisMission"havealreadysucceededingettingthemselves "accepted"inanenvironmenthithertohostileto everyChristianinfluence. Fromamixtureofcoral sandandbakedricehusks, formerlyawasteproduceof thericemills,hehasproducedafertiliserthatwill conditionthecountry'shuge ricefieldsforeightyears andwillnotturnthesoil acidic,asdosomeimported fertilizers.

Experiencehasshownthatafterspreadingthefertilizeronthefields,one poundofriceseedsissufficienttoseedonehectare (slightlymorethantwo acres),whereformerlya hundredpoundsackof seedswasused.Iftherice landsofthecountrywereso treated,thecountrywould saveoverthreemillion sacksofriceseedsperyear.

Testsoverthepastfew yearhaveshownanincreasedproductionfrom35 to100sacksofriceperhectare,andalargerandhealthierfruit,usingthe reducedseedlings.
