HisLordshipspokeonthe historyandcultureofthe Polishpeople,andhoped thatfromtheircentrethe Polishpeoplewouldgiveof

theirwealthofcultureto theAustralianpeople.

Aselectedchoirsangthe"0SalutarisHostia"and "SilentNight"inPolish. Theharmonisationwasexcellent.

Thecentreconsistsofa convertedshopwhichhas beenrenovatedbyvolunteerlabour.Itconsistsof alargeroomformeetings andasmallerroomfor acafeteria.Refreshments wereservedattheconclusionoftheceremony.

hehadfounditdifficultto distinguishFatherLinnane fromtheotherworkmen. Hehadseeneverystoneset initsplace,everystickof timberandeverytileplaced inposition.

realisationofa greatambitionandthecornbletionofaverynobleproject,deartohisheart.They hadcometocongratulate himandhispeopleontheir work,tojointheminthe joythattilledtheirhearts ontheopeningofavery beautifulnewschool.

WhenFatherLinnane cametotheparishafew yearsago,hesawtheabsolutenecessityofhavinga schoolforthechildrenof hisparishioners.Therehad beenmanydifficultiesover thepermit,andHisGrace offeredpubliclyhisdeep gratitudetotheMemberfor thedistrict,Mr.R.Owen, forhisextremehelpfulness ingettingthepermit.He wasamanofvisionanddiscernment,whosawwhat otherscouldnot,orwould not.see-thattheschool wouldbeanornamentto thetownandanacquisition tothewholedistrict.

RareCommodity

FatherLinnanehadovercomeallthedifficultiesmost satisfactorily,continuedHis Grace.Thequestionwas notmerelyoneofbuildinga schoolwhichwouldbepaid forinGod'sgoodtime.The difficultywastoobtaina communityofnuns,for nunswereacommoditynot tobeboughtwithmoney.

FatherLinnanehadapproachedtheMotherRegionaloftheSistersSt. JosephoftheApparition andaskedforherhelp. Withcharacteristicgene- rositythenunssteppedintothebreach.Thehousenext doorhadbeenacquiredandthenunswould moveintoresidencebefore thebeginningoftheschool yearinFebruary.

HisGracethankedthose wonderfulwomenforcorningtotheirassistanceand torbringingwiththemthe splendidtraditionstheyhad establishedintheirother schools.

Toprovidetheschool,FatherLinnanehadsetan extraordinaryexample.He wentdowntothequarry andworkedasalabourer loadingthestone.Hehad actedasassistanttothe stone-masonsandcarpen- ters.Onseveralvisitshe hadmade,saidHisGrace,

TheArchbishopsaidhe wasdelightedtohavethe opportunitypubliclytoexpress,....kiscongraulations, thanksandgratitudeto FatherLinnane,andthose associatedwithhim,for theirextraordinaryvision, industry,andunselfishness. Theyhadworkednearerto a60-hourweek.Ifthe buildinghadbeenacquired ataveryreasonableprice, itwasdueingreatestmeasuretotheindustryandinterestoftheparishpriest.

AmazingFeat

Itwasaverybeautiful buildingcontinuedtheArch bishop.Hehadnotseen anythingmoremagnificent thanthethreeclassrooms, theteachers'room,theverandah82x10,andthesanitaryblock.Itwasmoderninitsventilationand lighting;itwasdignified, solidandserviceable.It wasanextraordinaryachievementtohavebuiltit for£5,500.Haditcost £8,500or£9,500,itwould stillhavebeenareasonable price.

`OnpracticallyeverySundayinthenexttwo months,"statedHisGrace.

"anewschoolwillbeopenedintheArchdiocese.Some arecompletedandothers arenearingoompletion. Theyaremostlyprimary schools,andtheyhavecost us£125,000.Planswhich arebeingpreparedfor schoolbuildingswhichwill openbyFebruary,1954, willtotalanestimatedcost ofanother£102,000.

LookingforJustice

Catholics,continuedthe Archbishop,werenotonly providingverynecessary schoolaccommodationina Statewhichwasveryshort ofit,buttheyweredoing theirpartasabodytostem thetideofunemploymentin theirmidst.

This,theyundertookfora principle,foreducationdivorcedfromreligionwas noteducationinthetrue sense.Theycontributed one-fifthofthecostof buildingandmaintaining Stateschools.thusenduring adoubleburden.

Hehopedthedaywasnot jardistantwhenthelead givenbyTasmaniawould betakenupbyother States,andtheinjusticeso longandpatientlyborneby Catholicswouldberedressed.Theywerenot askingforcharityorsubsidies,butforjustice.They werepreparedtoaskitnot onlyforthemselvesbutfor alldenominationswhich conductedtheirownschools

AMONGTHOSEWHOWITNESSED`hesz-heol Mundaringwere18priests,23SistersofSt.Josephof tion,andstudentsfromSt.Charles'seminary. andweredoinganexcellent jobforthewholeState.

TheArchbishopcongratulatedthepeopleofMundaring.Hehadreadrecently withextraordinaryinterestabalancesheetwhich conveyedincoldfactsand figuresthataCatholicpopulationof250hadcontributedbydirectgivingthesum of£2.500.Hedoubted

MAGNIFICENTEFFORTOFPARISHIONERSPRAISED

whetherthatachievement couldbeequalled,letalone bettered,inanypartofthe world.Theirachievement wasduetotheleadershipof Father shouldLinnane,andthey continuetostand shouldertoshoulderbehind him.

Theschool,continuedHis Grace,belongednottohim, nortotheparishpriest,but tothepeople,anditwould beusedbythem,theirchildren,andtheirchildren's childrenforgenerationsto come. HisGracewished allahappyChristmasanda NewYearrepletewith God'schoicestblessings.

PraiseforMason

Inconclusion,heexpressedgratitudetoMr.J.Scatena.thestonemason.He wasmorethandelighted withhismagnificentstone work,whichwasworthyof theunrivalledartofthe Italianstonemasons.It wasacredittohimandhis country.HisGracealso thankedMr.PeterBertola, whohadbeensocloselyassociatedwiththebuilding.

TheV.Rev.Mgr.T.Lenihan,ofNortham,thenmade theappeal,theexcellentresponsetowhichwillbe publishedlaterinthesecolumns. ThesolemnblessingandofficialopeningceremonyofthenewSt.Mark'sCathedral,PortPirie,SouthAustralia,whichwill beperformedbyHisEminence,CardinalGilroyonSunday,March1,1953,willbeon historicoccasioninthedioceseofPortPirie (formerlythedioceseofPortAugusta).BishopB.Gallagher,consecratedinGeraldton onJune12,willbehosttothevisitors.

InadditiontoHisEminence,CardinalGilroy,many otherArchbishopsandBishopshaveintimatedtheir intentiontobepresent.

Theoccasionshouldbea memorableonenotonlyfor theCatholicsofthediocese ofPortPirie,butforallCatholicsthroughouttheCommonwealthofAustralia.

TheoldSt.Mark'schurch, whichwasoneofthefinest Catholicchurchesinthe StateofSouthAustralia, wasdestroyedbyfireon Oct.21,1947.

InresponsetoFather Coffey'srequestthethen Mayor,Mr,M.M.B.Middleton,obtainedpermission fromtheChiefSecretary's departmenttoholdMasses attheTownHall.Masswas heldattheTownHalluntil ChristmasEve,whenMidnightMasswasheldagain intheburnedchurchfollowingtheremovalofthe charredrethainsofthelofty ceilingandroofandamakeshiftcoveringofiron sheetsplacedinposition supportedbyheavybeams. Stringsofelectriclights andcandlesontheblackenedaltarnowcoveredwith somecleanaltar.clothsand drapiegs,providedthealtar forthecelebrationofMidnightMass.Throughthe jaggedaperturesformerly gracedbybeautifulstainedglasswindowsagentle breezewaftedovertheassemblage.Messagesofsympathyandpracticalhelpin theformofmonetarydonationsbegantopourinfrom alloverAustralia.

HisLordship,Bishop McCabe,thenBishopofthe diocesegavehispermission toFatherCoffeytomake apublicappeal.

PortPiriehavebeenuntiringintheireffortstocarry outtheBishop'swishes.The publicappeal,launchedon theoccasionandknownas "ThePopularAppeal"met withagenerousresponse anddonationsbegantopour infromallovertheCommonwealthofAustraliaand indeedfromcountriesoutsideofAustralia.

EstimatesMount

Duringthelastfiveyears asumof£25,000hasbeen receivedfortheappeal.This sumdoesnotincludeinsurancereceived.Originally,awaybackin1947,it wasestimatedthatasumof £30,000wouldberequired torebuildthechurchbut owingtothetremendous riseinpricesofmaterials andwagessincethenasum of£60,000willbeneeded tomeetthecostofrebuildingandfurnishingsforthe newbuilding.

ingbuilding.Thelengthof thenaveis149feet,transepts42ft.x17ft.6in.,the navehasavaultedtypeof ceiling36ft.high.Ithas accommodationfor700and standingroomfortwicethat number.

TheBishopofPortPirie, Dr.Gallagher,hasbeenuntiringinhiseffortsinconnectionwiththerebuilding andopeningofthenewCathedral.Sincehisadvent tothediocesehehasvisited everyparishinhisdiocese, andeverywherehehas spokenaboutthenewcathedralandhasgivenapersonalinvitationtoeveryCatholicinthediocesetoattendtheopeningceremonies.

Theenthusiasm,therefore, thatissoevidentthroughoutthedioceseconcerning theopeningofthenewcathedralisinlargemeasure duetoHisLordship.To beabletovisitintheshort timethathehasbeeninthe diocesealmosteveryportion ofhisvastdioceseissurely agreatachievement.BishopGallagherwillactas hosttothehugeconcourse ofpeoplethatisexpectedto attendtheopeningofthe cathedral.

BERLIN,Dec.12(NC.) -CatholicandProtestant churchauthoritiesinthe communist-ruledsectorof Berlinanticipategravedifficultiesfollowinganannouncementthatchurch taxeswillnolongerbecollectedbythecitytax bureau.

Thisdecision,whichgoes intoeffectonJanuary1, willforcethechurchesto setuptheirowntaxcollectionsystem.Heretofore,and inaccordancewiththetraditionalpracticethroughout Germanyandmanyother continentalcountries,state andcitytaxauthoritiesalso collectedthechurchtaxes andtransferredthemtothe administrativebodiesofthe churches.

Twoyearsago,werea strangertovisitPemberton andenquirefortheCatholic church,hewouldhavebeen directedtoamodestunpretentiousstructurestanding inthecentreofalargebut otherwisevacantb1ock. Werethatvisitortoreturn lastSundayevening,asurprisewouldawaithim,for withintheshortspaceof 12monthsapresbytery,a conventandacompact well-ventilatedmodern schoolhavebeenerected. Werehetoenterthe churchitselfhewoulddiscoveritfilledtocapacity, peoplecrowdingthesanctuary,occupyingevery availablespace,overflowing tothedooroftheporch, whilethevoicesofoldand newAustraliansblendedin harmonyunderthedirectionofalocalschoolteacher whospentmonthsoftrainingandpracticeinforming achoirwhichwoulddo credittoanychurch anywhere.

Itwasthefinalnightof Pemberton'sfirstMission sinceitsestablishmentasa parish.Whatwasformerly alittlestationchurchnow servedasaparishchurch forthetownofPemberton andthesurroundingdisstrictsofNorthcliffeand Eastbrookunderthefirst pastor,theRev.Stephen Kelly. Severaloftheparishionershadtravelledlong distancesforthefinalrally

andaccommodationwould nothavebeenpossiblebut forthefactthatthepeople ofNorthcliffehadamission thepreviousweek.The BlessedSacramentwasreserved,probablyforthe firsttime,duringtheMission.

Thesittingroominone oftheCatholichomesbecamealittleoratoryand eacheveningtheBlessed Sacramentwastakentothe localhallwhichservedasa churchwherethemission exercisesconcludedwith Benediction.Duringtheday FatherKellyandtheRev. Thecrowdedchurch,the wellorganizedsodalities, thelargenumberofchildrenattendingtheCatholic schoolatPembertonreflect theworkandzealnotonly ofthepastorbutofthe priestswhomadeallthis ti possible.Catholicfamilies inthedistrict,whocamein theearlysettlementdays remembertheyearsofisolationlongbeforePembertonexisted.Theyrecallthe establishmentofthe"Big Brook"MillbytheStategovernmentintheyear1913 tosupplysleepersforthe TransAustralianRailway linearoundthemill,which isto-daythelargestinthe SouthernHemisphere.Pembertongrewanddeveloped intoatownofscenicbeauty andup-to-dateamenities.

WiththegrowthofpopulationthenumberofCatholicsincreasedandoneof thefirstprieststominister therewasthelateFather Reidywhowasthenparish priestofBridgetown.The servicebyV. Rev.Fr.Kearnan,D.D.,now inchargeofKalamunda preservedandfosteredthe faithamongtheCatholics andespeciallytheItalian familiesinthe"depression" yearsandthetryingdays oftheearlylandsettlement.

FatherDuffysucceeded DoctorKearnanuntil1951 whenPembertonbecamea separateparishwithFather Kellyasthefirstpastor. Thealmostmushroom growthofaconvent,presbytery,andaschoolinthe shortperiodoftwelve monthsisprobablyarecord inparishactivityandan achievementofwhichpastor andparishonersmaybe justlyproud.

ThegloriousfleshofChrist bysanctifyingourbody makesitapartakerinHis incorruptibility.Thoughitis truethatallmenwillrise fromthegrave,theperson whohasbeensanctifiedand unitedtoChristbyHoly Communionhasaspecial titletothis.3.Communion remitsvenialsins,provided theyareatleastvirtually retracted.Itincidentallyand mediatelyremitstemporal punishmentforsin.Andit bringsspiritualsweetness anddelight. Itisamazingthatmore Catholicsdonotmakeuse ofdailyorweeklyCommunion.

Stalin'sobservationontheeveoftheSovietCommunistPartycongress,arecontainedinanextraordinarydocument,consist'ingofextremelyrepetitive,unwieldly,abstrusetheoreticalargumentsoverlaying shrewdpracticalsuggestionsandinstructions,heldtogetherbythesinewsofacoarse commonsenseandrealism.Inthisarticle, VictorS.Frank,intheLondon"Tablet,"says thatonedetectsinthefirstpartacertainold agemellowness;theimpressionofanold manwho,afteraturbulentandbloodycareer,haslearntcertainlessons.

Onthetheoreticallevel, Stalinimpliesthatthecapitalistencirclementmight disappearwithoutadirect clashbetweenthecapitalist andtheCommtlinstpartsof theworld.Thatwouldmean thatthewaywouldthenbe opentothefamous"witheringaway"oftheState,a processdeemedindispensablefortheinauguration oftheCommunistmillennium.

PeasantProblem

Onthehomefront,the mainobstacleremains,of course,thestubbornelementalresistanceofthe peasantrywhich,even underthekolkhozorder, refusestomergeintothe generalState-runsystemof economy.Thekolkhoz systemhasalwaysbeen consideredbytheSovietregimeasamerestepping stone tegrationtowardscompleteinofagriculture. AlthoughitgivestheState auniqueopportunityfor controllingtheeconomicactivitiesofthepeasantry, thepeasantgroupsnamed "collectivefarms"stillenjoy ameasureofeconomicautonomywhichisdeniedto otherproductionunits.Itis anintolerablestateofaffairsfortheCommunists thatthecollectivefarms, thoughnotowningeither thelandtheytill(itbelongs totheState,andthe kolkhozaremerelyallowed touseitinperpetuity),nor themachines(which,too, areStatepropertyandare hiredouttothefarms),still remainmastersofthepro- duce.True,aconsiderable proportionofthisproduce issoldcompulsorilytothe

NowStalinrejectsboth thesesuggestions.Heisas baffledasotherSoviet theoreticiansbythisstubbornsurvivalofcapitalistelements.Theultimateaim, hesays,remains,ofcourse, thecreationofauniform systemofeconomy.The kolkhozformofpropertyis, ofcourse,aloweronethan thecommunalone,exemplifiedbytheState-ownershipofindustrialplant.

Stalin'sSolution

Thequestionis,howis onetoraisethekolkhozpropertytothishigherlevel?
