BorninSligo,Ireland,75yearsundertheSouthern yearsago,heenteredtheCrosssawhimoccupiedin Redemptoristsin earlyMissionsandRetreats.He youth.hoping,likehispat-wastwiceattachedtothe ron,St.FrancisXavier,toNorthPerthcommunity,and findhisfutureapostolateonspentthelastsevenofhis theforeignmissions.IndecliningyearsinPerth. God'sprovidencehisdesireAsamissionerhewasalwastobegranted.
Afewyearsafterhisordinationin1905,hewas senttoNewZealand.The followingyearhewentto jointheRedemptoristsin thePhilippines,where,at therequestofthePope,the IrishandAustralianRedemptoristswereendeavouringtoreplacethemany priestsdrivenoutafterthe Spanish-Americanwar.
FatherGilmartinandhis "confrerestookoverthree largeparishesthathadbeen withoutapriestfor14years.
Thepeoplehadbegunto fallbackintoidolatryand thestrenuouslaboursofthe zealousyoungpriestwere mademoredifficultbythe strenuouslaboursofatropicalclimate.
Eightyearsoftireless worknecessitatedareturn toIrelandthathemightrecuperatehishealth.These wereunsettledtimesinhis nativeland,whentheBlack andTanswereinoccupation ofthecountry,andaftera coupleofyearsdevotedto thegivingofMissions,he returnedtotheislandsmore tiredthanwhenheleft.
