FatherGilmartinDies 'After27Years'Retired'

FatherFrancisGilmartin,C.Ss.R.,died peacefullyinSt.John'shospital,Subiaco,on Wednesdaymorning,Nov.19.

BorninSligo,Ireland,75yearsundertheSouthern yearsago,heenteredtheCrosssawhimoccupiedin Redemptoristsin earlyMissionsandRetreats.He youth.hoping,likehispat-wastwiceattachedtothe ron,St.FrancisXavier,toNorthPerthcommunity,and findhisfutureapostolateonspentthelastsevenofhis theforeignmissions.IndecliningyearsinPerth. God'sprovidencehisdesireAsamissionerhewasalwastobegranted.

Afewyearsafterhisordinationin1905,hewas senttoNewZealand.The followingyearhewentto jointheRedemptoristsin thePhilippines,where,at therequestofthePope,the IrishandAustralianRedemptoristswereendeavouringtoreplacethemany priestsdrivenoutafterthe Spanish-Americanwar.

FatherGilmartinandhis "confrerestookoverthree largeparishesthathadbeen withoutapriestfor14years.

Thepeoplehadbegunto fallbackintoidolatryand thestrenuouslaboursofthe zealousyoungpriestwere mademoredifficultbythe strenuouslaboursofatropicalclimate.

Eightyearsoftireless worknecessitatedareturn toIrelandthathemightrecuperatehishealth.These wereunsettledtimesinhis nativeland,whentheBlack andTanswereinoccupation ofthecountry,andaftera coupleofyearsdevotedto thegivingofMissions,he returnedtotheislandsmore tiredthanwhenheleft. Threemoreyearssufficedto undermine his failing strengthandin1925he cametoAustralia.

ForsixyearshewasnovicemasterofthelayBrothersinNewcastle,N.S.W. Theremainderofhis27

edforhiskindlyhumour, hiscompassionforthe sinner,andhisfearless straightforwardness n preachingthetruth.Even totheendhiszealwould bringhimatoncetothe bedsideofasoulinneed.

Dailytillwithintwodays ofhisdeathhestruggledup tothechapelseveraltimes tomaketheWayofthe Cross.HesaidMassfor waysveryacceptabletothelasttimeontheSunday bothpriestsandpeople.not-beforehedied,andthat

afternoon he assisted fromthebalconyatthe Eucharisticprocession.It wastheexpressionofalifelongdevotion,andduring thesemi-consciousnessthat precededdeath,hecouldbe heardrepeatingtheprayers oftheMass.Godgavehim acalmandgentleend.Two membersofhislargefamilysurvivehim,abrotherin Americaandasisterwhois aBonSecournuninBelfast. HisGracetheArchbishop presidedattheRequiem inpresenceofnearly60 priestsonThursdaymorningintheMonasterychurch.

OnSundayeveninglasta shortpanegyricwaspreachedonthedeceasedpriestat eveningDevotionsbythe V.Rev.P.Talty,rectorof themonastery.

TheRev.J.Higgins, C.Ss.R.,wascelebrantofthe Mass,andthelastritesat thegravesidewereconductedbytheRev.T.Robinson,C.Ss.R.
