EvenIgnorantCatholics Don'tWorshipOurLady
BytheRt.Rev.Mgr.M.Smith.
Fourorfivetimesin recentweeks,Ihaveseen statementsmadebywellmeaningProtestantdivines thatmodernCatholicsare extravagantintheirpraise oftheBlessedVirgin. This isnottrue.
Everynowandthen,I receivealetterfromindignantProtestantswho wantmetogoonrecord rebukingCatholicsforadoringMary.Iassurethem thatCatholicswouldlaugh atmeifImadesucha charge.
MaryHadRedeemer
In38yearsofCatholic editorship,andinlengthy travelsintoothernationsas wellasthroughtheUnited States,Ihavenevercome acrossasing',Catholicwho hadthewrongideaofthe Virgin.Welookuponher asacreature,whosesupernaturalgracewaswonfor her,asitwasforus,bythe deathofherSon,theManGod,onthecross.Inher case,itwerkc.dexclusively tokeepherfrombeingconceivedandborninsinor fromfallingintosin.Inour ease,itliftsusfromsin, thoughoftentooitactsas apreventive.She,likeus, hadaRedeemer.
Whenwespeakofheras Co-Redeemer,wehaveno ideaofshovingasideChrist, forHealonewonthegrace forallofusastheRedeemerinjustice,whereas sheistheCo-Redeemerin mercy,asshepraysforthe applicationofHismerits tous.LikeChrist,shesufferedforus,butonlybecauseofHissufferingwas God'sjusticeappeased.Her roleliesingainingtheapplicationofChrist'smerits tousthroughmercy,for sheisouradvocate.Many timesweneedanadvocate tomeltthebarstograce erectedbyourownsinsor coldness.Thegrace,however,isalwaysthatwonby ChristinHisPassion.
Nomerecreature,under theeconomywilledbyGod, couldearnthatgrace.It tooktheSecondPersonof theBlessedTrinity,inHis assumedhumannature,to doit.OnlyGodcouldpay thepricethatGoddemand-
ed.Marycouldnotpayit. Sometimesoneseesin print,orhearsitsaid, thatMexicans,Italians,and others,particularlythepeasants,regardMaryasGod. Ihavebeenamongthese peopleandhaveneverseen theslightesttraceofdivine adorationdirectedtoward her.Thecultusgivenis simplythattoGod'sgreatest createdperson,anditisnot supremeworship,orthe latriaweofferedtoGod, butasecondarycult,hyperdulia,beyondthatgiven tothegreatestofother saintsortotheangels,but definitelynotdivineadoration.
CatholicsandOrthodox alonecalltheBlessedVirgin theMotherofGod.Ifher SonisGod,whatelsecan wecallher?Todenyher thetitleistoprofessweak faithin,ortodeny,theIncarnation.Amotherbrings forthnotsimplyanature butaperson,andinthis casetheBabyborntoMary wasGod.
HereticsGiveProof
Historygivesastriking proofthatCatholicsrefuse divinehonourtoanybody shortoftheInfiniteGod. TheAriansofthefourth century, inrefusingtoacceptJesusasequaltothe FatherinDivinity, still werewillingtogiveChrist asortofdivineworship. TheyregardedHimasa createdGod,asortofsubGod.TheCatholicChurch refusedtolistentosuch nonsense, andoneofthe greatestturmoilsinChristianhistorybegan.Catholics, afterrefusingtogivedivine worshiptoacreatedGodin theArianconceptofChrist, certainlywouldnottoday, orever, agreetogivedivine adorationtoMary.
Apollinaris,abitteropponentofArianism,wentto anoppositeextremein heresy.InordertoemphasizeChrist'sDivinity,he deniedHisfullmanhood, andheldthattheWord,the SecondPersonoftheTrinity,tooktheplaceofthe humansoulinChrist.The Catholicshadeverheldthat ChrististrueGodandtrue man.TobetrueGodHe
mustbeinfiniteandequal' totheFather.Tobetrue manHemusthaveabody andahumansoul,likeours. ThehypostaticunionofGod andmaninChrististhe existenceofthetwocompletenatures,thedivineand thehuman,intheone Person.Hypostatichere meanspersonal;andhence webelieveintwonatures inonePerson,withoutmixtureofthesetwonatures, eachofwhichiscomplete. WeadoretheentireChrist, andhencebothHisdivine andHishumannature,but adorationalwaysgoesto thecompletePerson,and Hiscreatedhumannature couldnotbeadoredapart fromHisDivinePerson.
MaryisnotaDivine Person,andhencecannotbe givendivineadoration.
Saint'sNotedReply
St.GregoryNazianzusin 382wrotearemarkable replytoApollinaris.He said:
"IfanyonedoesnotacceptholyMaryasMotherof God,heiscutofffromthe Deity.
"Ifanyoneshouldsay thatChristpassedthrough theVirginasthrougha channel, andwasnotfashionedinawaythatisdivine aswellashuman...heis equallygodless.
"Ifanyoneshouldsay thatthemanwasfashioned andonlyafterwardsdid Godstealin,heisalsotobe condemned...
"Ifanyoneintroduces twosons,oneofGodthe Father,theotherofthe Mother,andnotoneandthe sameSon,mayheforfeithis shareintheadoption."
Strongerlanguagecould hardlybefound;itisthe typeoflanguagethatone maytracebackthroughthe centuries,however,about Mary,eventothedaywhen theangelGabrielmadeplain totheVirginherself"Hail, fullofgrace,theLordis withthee,blessedartthou amongwomen...thouhast foundgracewithGod."
Andthen,astheKnox translationputsit,theangel said:"Beholdthoushalt conceiveinthywomb,and shaltbearaSon,andshall callHimJesus.Heshallbe
great,andmenwillknow HimfortheSonoftheMost High;theLordGodwillgive HimthethroneofHis fatherDavid,andHeshall reignoverthehouseof Jacobeternally;Hiskinddomshallneverhavean end.ButMarysaidtothe angel,Howcanthatbe, sinceIhavenoknowledge ofman?Andtheangel answeredher.TheHoly Spiritwillcomeupon thee,andthepowerofthe MostHighwillovershadow thee.ThusthatHolyThing whichisbornoftheeshall beknownfortheSonof God.'' Protestantismislessthan Christianwhenitrefusesto sayoutright:"HolyMary, MotherofGod!"
