The1952meetingwasa brilliantlyplannedandorganisedathleticgathering Thecollegeladsworetheir colouredvests,sixcolours inall.Thecolouredor teamcompetitiongavereal zesttothemeeting.A grandmarchpastfromthe collegeontotheground,a numberofteamevents,as

wellastheusualunder-age competitions,keptcompetitorsbusyandthespectators interested.

TheC/OofA.T.C.in WA.,F/LGundelac,commentedmostfavourablyon theteams'performances. Noindividualrecords werebroken,thoughthree teamsbrokerecordsinthe teams'races.Attimesa strongheadwindfoiledpossiblebreakingofrecords.

AsKalgoorliePrepares ToMarkGoldenJubilee

ThefirstMasswasofferedinKalgoorliebyFatherDeasyintheyear1893.An improvisedaltarwaserectedunderabush wherethepresentbelfrystands,andalarge numberofthosewhohadrushedtoKalgoorlieafterthediscoveryofgoldbyPatrick Hannan,attendedtheHolySacrifice.

From1894until1896, Masswascelebratedinthe diningroomoftheGreat Boulderhotel.Thefirst churchinKalgoorliewas erectedin1896,ontheblock oflandnowoccupiedbySt. Mary'shall.FatherO'Gormanwasappointedpriestin charge,andthefollowing yearFatherPhelanhisassistant.

TheSistersofSt.Johnof God,whohadarrivedin Coolgardiesomeyearsbefore,cametoKalgoorliein 1896,andopenedatempor- aryhospitalonthesiteoccupiedbythepresentbuilding.ThefirstSt.Mary's schoolwasopenedin1897, andtheSistersofSt.John ofGodwereplacedin chargeofit.

WhenFatherO'Gorman resignedearlyin1900,and returnedtoEngland,Father Strongewasappointedto succeedhim.In1900he laidthefoundationstoneof thenewSt.Mary'sschool, andconvenedthefirst meetingoftheparishioners in1900,tomakearrange-mentsfortheerectionofa newchurch.Becauseof ill-health,FatherStronge wasunabletocarryouthis 'planfortheerectionofa church,andafterashort timelefttheGoldfields.

ChurchIsBuilt

Hewassucceededby FatherRobinson,inApril, 1901.FatherRobinsonremainedinKalgoorlieuntil 1914,whenhejoinedthe RedemptoristFathers.The 'firsttaskundertakenbyhiminKalgoorliewasthe erectionofSt.Mary's church.

Achurchcommittee,with Dr.Maxwellaschairman, waselectedin1901,toaid intheerectionofthenew building.Aftersomedifficulty,ablockoflandat thecornerofPorterand Brookmanstreetswasacquiredasasite.

Tenaerswerecalled,and thelowest,thatofMr.Cambell,wasaccepted.Thecontractpriceforthenew buildingwasapproximately£6,500.Mr.M.Cavanaghwasthearchitect.The workwascompletedby Messrs. Williams and O'Donnellatacostof £3,000(approx.).

ThebuildingwascompletedinNovember.1903, atanapproximatecostof

£10,000.Theassetsin handamountedto£4,000. BishopGibneypresidedon theopeningSunday,andat areceptionheldinSt. Mary'shallafterMass,the parishionerspresentedHis Lordshipwithagoldcross andchalice.

Thiscrusswaswilledby BishopGibneytothefirst ChristianBrothers'student inAustraliatoberaisedto theepiscopate:theMost Rev.BasilRoper,ofToowoomba,wearsitto-day.

In1906,thefirstcommunityofChristianBrothers cametoKalgoorlie.The presentChristianBrothers' college,whichwaspreviouslyahospital,wasacquiredasadwellinghouse, andin Christianthesameyearthe Brothers'school waserected.

FatherBourkeoutlined theCatholicattitudetokindergartenssayingthatCatholictheorywasneutral, tendingtohostilitywhen pre-schooleducationwasa substituteforthehome, tendingtoapprovalwhen sucheducationwasasupplementandacollaboration withthe-home.

CatholicsinAustralia werelessactiveinthepreschoolmovementasa group.

(1)becauseofpreoccupationwiththevoluntary taskofschool-ageeducationfrom5-14andbeyond;

(2)becausesomeprovisionwasmadeforpreschoolchildreninassociationwithCatholic schools.

FatherBourkethendiscussedthefinancialimplicationsofthepre-school movement.Hewishedthe voluntarycharacterofthe movementtoberetained,togetherwiththesecondingof voluntaryeffortbypublic grants-theKindergarten unionspent£36,364,of whichnearly£18,000came fromStateandLotteryCommissiongrants.Catholicswereanxiousthatthispart.nershopofprivateandState resourcesshouldbefurther extendedineducation.

Aformulawassought, wherebywithoutunduesacrificesofcontrolandof standards,Catholicprovisionofpre-schoolfacilities shouldparticipateinfinancialaid.Inparticular,it wassuggestedthatifthe Statetookoverfinancialresponsibilitiesforthetrainingandsupportoftrainee teachersandthepaymentof teachers,thenCatholicinstitutionsshouldbenefitby thisassumedresponsibility. Oneofthebarriersatpresentwastheconceptionofa kindergartenasphysically distinctfromschoolscoveringthenormalschoolage.

Asonereadsthefetterswhichhavebeencrowdingthecolumnsofourmorningcontemporaryrecentlyonthesocialstatusofournativepeople,one cannotbutremarkontheapparentlywidespreadfeelingthatsomethingfar-reachingshouldbedonefor theseunfortunatepeople.The"WestAustralian" istobecongratulatedfortheseriesofarticles,compiledbynativesandwrittenbyoneofthem,whichit recentlypublished.Iftheyhadonedefectitwas thetendencytolookbackinratherrhetoricalretrospect.Thereisnopointinstirringtheevilpast, fornobodyofanydecencyinourwhitecommunity isignorantofitsneglect'andcruelty.Whatneeds tacklingisofficialapathythroughanenlightened publicopinionastowhatisdesirableandpractical.

Inthisrespectthereisreasonforrejoicingthat theWestralianwhoisFederalMinisterforTerritories,Mr.PaulHasluck,isnotonlyintenselysympathetictothecauseofthenatives,butsingularly well-informedontheoriginanddevelopmentoftheir problems.Werecallthathewasawardedthe MasterofArtsdegreeinthelocaluniversityfora thesison"BlackAustralians,"whichwassubsequentlypublishedinbookform.Duringhisyears with"TheWestAustralian,"Mr,Hasluckalsocontributedextensivelyto"TheLadder"inthecauseof. theaborigines.Mr.Hasluck'smove,therefore,in theearlydaysofSeptemberfortheformationofa NativeWelfareCouncilandhissubsequentlypublishedviewson"welfare"mayreadilybetakenas markingtheinaugurationofa"newdeal"forour nativepeople.

Mr.Hasluckdidnotoverlookthereligious aspectofthenativequestion.Hewroteoftheir "mentalandspiritualpreparationforthatfuture,TheCatholicconsciencecannotbeateaseinthe contemplationthatthemissionaryworkencompassedbytheBenedictinesandPallottineshascontributedtheirshareforthem.Thisheroiclabouris carriedon.forthemostpart,amongnativeswhowill neverintheirlifetimebeabletoliveaccordingto Europeanstandardsandwouldhavelittleinterest indoingso.Tothemthetraditionalpolicyofprotectionandsegregationwillstillapply.Butregardingthethousandsofmixedbloodswhoart beingforcedwilly-nillyintothewhiteman'spattern, whatareCatholicsdoing?Ourfaithcouldbea majorelementinthebreaking-downofbarriersand inthefosteringofrelationshipsofcharitywhichunderliethebestconceptionsofcitizenship..IfCatholicscouldplayoncemoreinthisissuethenoble roletheirBishop,Dr.Gibney,andthisnewspaper playedinthenativecontroversiesoftheeighteeneightiesandeighteen-nineties,theymightcontribute somethingofrealvaluetothesolutionofagrave problemandtothehonouroftheircountry.

MiraclesWithin?

Healsoraisesquestionsin regardtotheMiracleofthe SunatFatima.Heasks whetherthishappenedmateriallyorliterally.How canweadmitthatthesun performedsomesortof dance?Ifthesunreally declinedfromitsorbit,all theplanetarysystemwould experienceitterribly.Our Ph.D.inquirersays,therefore,theMiracleoftheSun couldnotbeamiraclein thestrictsense,butsome sortofatmospherichappenMgthatgaveobservingand (xcitedpeopleanimpression ofthesun'sdance,like crosses themoon,two sunsinthesky,ajumping sunset,etc.

Ourcorespondentisconvinced,hesays,thatall suchmiracles"reallydo happenwithinourselves," buttheydonotoccur prae4er(beyond)orcontra '(against)natureoutsideus. Theymay,heconcedes,be evenofasupernaturalcharacterinspiredbyGodor ourfaith,buttheyarestill ourownpsychologicalexperiences,whethervisions, prophecies,etc.Thedoctor thinksourfaithshould consistinwhatChristand HisChurchteach,andthat morestressshouldbeplaced bypreachersonsaints'pat- 'tern-behaviourthanontheir miracles.

PrivateRevelations

Somewillobjecttothe franknessofthedoctor's views,but,asfarasCatholicanddivinefaithisconcerned,heisonsafeground inmostofhisstatements aboutwhattheChurchdemands.Thefaiththatis requiredforsalvationisacceptanceofGod'spublicrevelation,notofprivaterevelationsreceivedevenby saints.Thefactisthatno privaterevelationeveradds tothedepositoffaithleft withtheApostles,butitis alsoafactthatGodwould *notmakeaprivaterevelationunlesstherewereexcellentreasonforit.Aprivaterevelationcanemphasizeaparticularfacetofdivinefaith,promoteavaluabledevotionsuchasthe ScapularortieRosary,or warnbothchurchmenand thepublicofimpendingdangersifsinnersdonotrepent. Thereisanumberofreasonsthatwouldmakeprivaterevelationsworth

while.Thetheologicalstand is,however,thatnobodyis boundtoacceptanyparticularprivaterevelation, evenonethatisaswidely publicizedasthevisionsto thethreechildrenofFatimain1917. PersonallyIbelievein Fatima,asdoestheCatholic publicingeneral.

VerySevereTests

Tooeasyacceptanceof visions,supposedlydivine locutions,etc.,isnotencouragedbytheChurch.Claims havebeenmadeinmany casestovisions,butonlyin themorepublicizedones doestheChurchmakeacanonicalexaminationof them.Hertestsareextremelysevere,andifshedecidesagainstthemherdecisionsoughttobeaccepted withoutquestion.Onecannotbeexcusedfromthe sinofsuperstition(worship ofGodinafalsemanner), andcertainlynotfromdisobedience,inrefusalto accept.adecisionagainsta petvisionary,andbycontinuanceintherejecteddevotion.

St.JohnoftheCross,the greatestauthorityonthis point,taughtthatvisions werenottobedesired,and infactwereifpossibletobe avoided.Thismightcomeas startlingnewstosome peoplebutalittlereasoning willprovethesaintright.Ourfightforsalvationis madechieflythroughthe theologicalvirtuesoffaith, hope,andcharity,andthe othervirtuesandgiftsinfusedintooursoulsatBaptism.Faithistheacceptance "ofthingsunseen;"itisthe beliefinGod'srevelationon theauthorityofGod,who canneitherdeceivenorbe deceived.IfIweretosee Christstandingbeforeme, itwouldbeawonderful thing,butitwouldnotbe sovaluableformeasif,receivingJesusChristinthe BlessedEucharist,Ipro- foundlybelievedintheReal Presence.Anyactofintense faithisworthmoretoan individualthanavision.

VisionsDangerous

WhentheChurchinvestigatesvisionaries,andthe probersareconvincedthat genuinevisionsorlocutions haveoccurred,noofficial stampisthusputonthe privaterevelationstoindicatethattherecanbeno flawinthem.Whathappens ismerelythattheChurch authoritiessaytheysee nothingagainstfaithor moralsintheincidentsreported,justastheChurch allowsherimprimaturto beplacedonabook,notto givebackingtoallthatis saidthere,butmerelytoindicatethatnothingadverse tofaithormoralsisfound.

Themysticallifedoesnot, initsrealessence,consist invisions,stigmata,charismatasuchasprophecy, healingthesick,etc.Such signsmightfollowit,but charismaticsignsarenot gracesthatofthemselves addtothesanctificationof thepossessor.Theyare meantforthebenefitof othersoulsandmoreorless indirectlyforthebenefitof theseer,whomayprofit fromthem,butwhomight profitjustasreadilyfrom hearinganexcellentsermon, seeinganextraordinarypicture,readingapiousbook, etc.Visionsdonoteffectan increaseofgraceofthemselves,butonlyindirectly. Godcan,however,giveextraordinarygracestovisionariesbymeansofmysticismorinotherways.

WorthyofCredence

IthinktheMiracleofthe Sunactuallyoccurredat Fatima,foroutstanding scholars,suchasthelate WilliamThomasWalsh,historicalexpertofAmerica (OurLadyofFatima,Macmillan,1948)andFatherC. C.Martindale,S.J.,England (TheMeaningofFatima,a criticalstudy,P.J.Kenedy &Sons,1950),madeamost searchinginvestigationof thequestionatthesiteand botharrivedatdeepbelief init.Onecannoteasilyescapethefactthat70,000 personssawtheMiracleof theSun,hadnoideawhat wastooccur,andthat evenscoffersadmittedin thecontemporaryanti-clericalpressthatsomethingex-traordinaryhappened.

mustbeinfiniteandequal' totheFather.Tobetrue manHemusthaveabody andahumansoul,likeours. ThehypostaticunionofGod andmaninChrististhe existenceofthetwocompletenatures,thedivineand thehuman,intheone Person.Hypostatichere meanspersonal;andhence webelieveintwonatures inonePerson,withoutmixtureofthesetwonatures, eachofwhichiscomplete. OnlysixmilesfromtheIron Curtain,thetownisperchedamidthehillsfrom whichonecanlookintothe menacinglandofCzecho Slovakia.

Itissignificantthatthis woman,whonowmaybe consideredan advance guardagainstforcesofatheisticCommunism,alsostood inthewayoftheNazis'attempttopaganiseGermany. One-thirdofthelittlevillagewasdestroyedby bombinginWorldwarII, buttheywereNazibombs droppedwiththehopeof dispellingthe"Mysteryof Konnersreuth."Oneofthe bombsstruckandsetablaze abarnoveracellarwhere Thereseandseveralofher niecesandnephewshad takenshelter.Theybarely escapedwiththeirlives.

Butdespitealltheinterestinhermysticalexperiences,andthecontroversy thatragesoverher,Therese

goesserenelyaboutthesimpledutiesofherstateof life.Shetendshergarden,helpscareforher niecesandnephews,instructsthevillagechildren incatechism,andseetoit thatthechurchiskeptneat andcleanandplentifully supplied,wheneverpossible, withflowers.Sometimes sheisseendrivingaboutthe villageinabuggydrawn byasmallpony,visitingthe sick,relatives,andfriends.

Thisisonesideofher life,inwhichsheappears tobeahealthy,lively,perfectlynormalperson,with thesimpleinterestsofthe peasantstockfromwhich sheissprung,readyfora chatwithfriends,readyfor asmileandajoke.

Butthisisthewoman whomorethan1,000times hassharedmysticallyinthe sufferingsanddeathofOur Lord.Thesilverjubilee ofherexperienceofthesufferingsofHolyWeekcame onGoodFridayof1951.On thatday,althoughshesaw andfeltthesufferingsof Christ,theusualbleeding didnottakeplace.This year(1952)thebleeding wasmorecopiousthanever before.
