WithrepresentativesfromWaroona, Dardanup,Collie,MargaretRiver,Busselton,Manjimup,andBunburyattending,the South-WestHolyNomerally,heldatBunburyonOct.12,wasdescribedbyvisiting DiocesanUnionrepresentativesasthemost representativeandbestattendedrallythey hadyetattended.

Therallycommencedat 5p.m.withRosaryandBenedictionatSt.Patrick's churchandasermon preachedbyRev.W.Byrne. PriortoBenedictiona numberofjuniormembers oftheBunburybranchof thesocietywereconsecratedbytheV.Rev.Dean Wallace. At6o'clockabuffethigh teawasheldatSt.Joseph's hallatwhichallthevisiting delegateswerewelcomedto Bunbury.MemberswereaddressedbytheDiocesanpresident(Mr..1.Lynch),the' vice-president(Mr. C. Shewasthedaughterof4.Mr.andMrs.Lynagh,Kilglass,Co.Sligo.Having completedhertrainingasa teacherattheSistersof Mercy'sTrainingcollege. Dublin,shewasappointed, onthemeritsofherhigh qualifications,principalofa governmentschool,butrelinquishedthispostsome yearslatertoenterthe ConventofSt.JohnofGod, Wexford.

Beforeagoodattendanceofpriestsand laity,HisGracetheArchbishopofficially blessedandopenedthenewpresbyteryand additionstotheschoolatHolyNameparish, Carlisle,onOct.12.

HisGracetheArchbishoponicalvisitation,hehad congratulatedFatherPowersuggestedtheadvisability ontheacquisitionoftheofforminganewparish.He newpresbytery.Itwasa nicedesign,serviceableand comfortable,withoutbeing pretentiousinanyway.

UntilnowFatherPower hadlivedinimprovised quarters,neithercomfortablenorconvenient,andhe hadlookedforwardanxiouslytothecompletionofthe newpresbytery.Hisparishionerswerewithhim thatday,andfriendsfrom outsidetheparishtowish himthecomfortandprivacyherichlydeserved.

HisGracecongratulated thepeopleontheacquisitionofextensionstothe school,bothintheclassroomandsheltershed.They wereurgentlyneeded,and wouldbeatremendous boontoteachersandchildrenalike.

HisGracerecalledthat, twoyearsago,whenoncan-

hadtoldthemwhatwould beexpectedofthemin thatevent,anditwastypicalofthesplendidspiritof faithandgenerositypre-vailingamongthemthat theyhadbeendelightedat theprospectofhavingtheir ownpriestlivingamong them.

Theywereappreciative, continuedtheArchbishop, ofthehonourconferredon theirdistrictbytheraising ofitsstatustoaparish,and theyhadaffordedample evidenceofthatappreciationintheco-operation, spiritualandmaterial,which theyhadgivenFather Powersincehewentamong them,astheirfirstparish priest,18monthsago.

FatherPowerhadworked veryhard,saidHisGrace, andhadgiventhemgood leadership.Heexpected themtorisetothestandard

hehadsetthem,andthere wasampledemonstration theyweredoingthatinno uncertainway.

TheArchbishopthanked FatherPowerforhisgreat endeavoursforhispeople, andhecongratulatedthe peopleonthefineprogress thattheyweremaking,on behalfofFatherPowerand himself,andontheexcellentco-operationtheywere giving.

Withthefoundationsnow beinglaid,hesaid,andwith themaster-planwhich,with theirco-operation,Father Powerhadinmindforthe parish,itgavegoodpromise ofbecomingaveryfineparishinthenotfardistant future.

HisGracethankedthe SistersofMercy,whohad beengoingfromtheconventatVictoriaParkto Carlisleyearafteryearfor thepast16years.Therewas averyfinestandardinthe school,andHisGraceappealedtothepeopletoshow theirappreciationofthe splendidworktheSisters weredoingamongthemby helpingthembyevery meansintheirpower.

In1895,SisterIgnatius, thenanovice,heardDr. Gibney'smovingappealto thecommunityforrecruit forhisdiocese,withthe happyresultthatafterher professionthefollowing year.accompaniedbyasew othervolunteers,shewason herwaytoAustraliato jointheoriginalbandof pioneers.

VerysoonafterherarrivalinPerthshewassentto KalgoorlietoestablishaCatholicschool(intheoldiron church,thesacristyprovidinglivingquartersforherselfandhercompanion). thusbecomingthepioneer ofCatholiceducationonthe Goldfields.Herworkwas singularlyblessed,noless inthesecularthaninthe religiousfield.

HasRhodesScholar

Manypupilsoftheschool shefoundedarepriestsand Religious,whilstmany othersarefillingprominent positions,notablyintheEducationdepartment.Nota fewarevenerablegrandparents,zealouslypassing ontoposteritythebesttraditionsofoldSt.Mary's.A distinguishedstudentofhers wasthelateDr.J.WHoran, whopassedthefirstUniversity(Adelaide)examinationunderhertutorship withsuchbrilliantresults thatshepersuadedhisparentstosendhimtotheC.B. college,Perth.Thiswas beforetheadventofthe ChristianBrotherstoKalgoorlieWhiletherehe shedlustreonhisAlma Materbybecomingoneof

SheBuiltFiveHospitals.

AtaboutthetimeMother IgnatiuswasappointedsuperioressinSubiacoin1910, ithadbeendecidedtoconcentrateonhospitalwork; so,inorderthebetterto fulfilheroffice,shequalified asanurseAtthattime theSubiacohospitalwas butasmallwoodandiron buildingcontainingnot morethan26beds.She settoworkatoncetoreplaceitwiththemagnificentstructurewearefamiliarwithto-day,thefirst sectionofwhichwasopened withintwoyearsofher termofoffice.

Toprovidestaffforthe

growinghospitalwasoneof themanyproblemsMother Ignatiushadtosolve;but shesucceeded.Onavisit totheEasternStatesshe foundsixpostulants.ReturningfromaGeneral ChapterinIrelandin1924, shebroughtout40postulants,andonasubsequent visithomereturnedwith38.

Asvocationsincreasedit waspossibletomeettherequestsofBishopsinthe EasternStatesforfoundationsatBallaratandGoulburn,andlateronatWarrnamboolandBrighton;and inW.A..Bunbury,Geraldton,Rivervale,andNortham havebeensupplied.

Sundaymorningdawneddarkand overcastwithsquallyshowers,whichincreasedasthedayworeon.TherewaseveryindicationthattheannualfunctionatPalmyrawouldbemarredbyrain.Yet,with faithinthepowerofOurLady,preparations wentonfortheoutdoorceremony.

Thatfaithwasamply rewarded.Thecloudsdispersed,andabrilliant sunshinedriedthegrounds andaffordedampletime'to makethenecessarypreparations.

At3o'clock,theprocessionleftthechurchand underacloudlesssky,led bythecrossbearerand acolytes,marchedthrough FossandHammadstreets. Solargewastheprocession, thattheleadershadalready enteredthegroundsbefore thestatuehadleftthe church.

Alternatinghymnsand Rosariesweresungand recitedduringthemarch. Throughthemediumofa choirbroadcastingthrough apublicaddresssystemthe hymnsweresunginperfect unison.TheRev.J.Depiazzi recitedtheRosaries.The schoolsgirlscarriedthe FatimaPilgrimstatueon itsflower-deckedbier,precededbytheattendants dressedinwhite,andflankedby.theAquinascadets whoformedtheguardof honour.

Thecrowningtookplace onaspeciallyprepared altar.TheRev.J.Lynch, P.P.spokeofthescenes thattookplaceashestood onthestepsoftheBasilica ofFatimaonthatday12 monthsago.Hepointedout theutterpowerlessnessof humanlanguagetopaint evenindimmestoutlinea pictureofthatbreathtaking, awe-inspiringspectacleof faithandfervour,thatcould notberestrained,butfound expressioninunprecedented, outwardmanifestationsof loveandloyaltytotheir motherandtheirQueenthat surelymustbeunparalleled intheannalsofman'sdevotionandhomagetoacreature.

InFatimaanddevotionto itsmessagelaythesafetyof theworldsaidFather,Lynch andthedestructionofthe Satanicinfluencesthat woulddestroyit.Sotheir duty,asCatholics,was crystalclear;toputinto

practicethemessageof prayerandpenance,to spreadittoothersbyword andexample.

WhenSubiacobecamea ProvinceoftheOrderin 1925.MotherIgnatiuswas appointedProvincial,and heldthatofficeuntil1934, whenshewasentrusted withthebuildingofthe Rivervalehospitalandmade itsfirstsuperior.Shewas backinSubiacoin1941, thistimeasVicar-Provincial;butitwassoonapparentthatadvancingageand theonerousdutiesofher longservicetothecommunityhadtakenheavytollof theoncestrongconstitution andablemind.Consequently,shewasleftfreeto enjoyawell-earnedrest. "Anyman(orwoman) whogiveshimselfhonestly andperseveringlytothe programmewillattainsobriety;theprogrammerests onutterhonestywithoneselfandonlyuponthisconditionhasAAanythingto offertheprospectivemember.About75percent.of thosejoiningAAarecured almostimmediately,15per centgetcuredafteracoupleoflapses,andabout10 percentcannotbecured.
