Hehadbeentrainedin theartsofgemcutting, woodcarving,blockprintingandmetalcasting.These skillswerenotuncommon inhisday.Hewasanexperimenterbynature,and thisrecreation,thenasnow, provedratherexpensive.
Hedevelopedahabitof borrowingmoney,andhis appearancebeforethelocal magistratesprovidedthe nesthistoricalrecordofhis printingactivities.

berg'simaginationandhis passiontoprovetothe worldthathisprocesscould matchthebeautyofthe hand-writtenwordingrace andprecision. In1452heagainappealed toFust,whobynowshared Gutenberg'senthusiasmand loanedhim£.10,000moreon conditionthathe,too,would haveashareinthe"work ofthebooks." Gutenberg's.dreamswere finallybeingrealised.He wasactuallypoducing,with hisnewprocessofmovable type,aprintedbookwhich wouldrivalthemanuscripts andmakeunnecessary monthsoftediouslabourinvolvedintheproductionof hand-writtencopies.

Thismostimportantlaw suitwaslostbyGutenberg. Hisequipmentwasconfiscated.Itwastheoldstory oftheinventivegeniusand thefinancialflop,butunlike mostofsuchstoriesthisone hadahappyending.
Gutenberg'sventurewas asuccess.Hislife-long dreamhadbeenfulfilled. Hehadproducedamasterpieceinhisfirstmajorattempt,andhegaveGod's messageanewentryinto theheartsofmen.
MoneyhadmeantbutlittleinthelifeofGutenberg. Honourcametohim,andhe receivedanannualincome fromtheArchbishopof Mainz.Hediedin1468, andwasburiedinthe ChurchofSt.Francis,of whoseThirdOrderhewas veryprobablyamember.
PoliticalCorruption SinAgainstHonesty
Themenbroughtsuit againsthimforbreachof contract.Theyclaimedthat theyhadloanedhimmoney withtheunderstandinghe wouldrevealtothemthe mysteriousprocesshewas developing.Thiswas16 yearsbeforetheBiblewas printed.Gutenbergdidnot revealhissecret.Thefour recordsshowitwasaprocess"resemblingprinting andinvolvingtheuseof lead."
Thistypeofcourtaction wastoplagueGutenberg frequentlythroughouthis life.Itseemsnottohave disturbedhimunduly,however,forhisborrowingconinued.
BynatureGutenbergwas anindependentthinker.Althoughhewasamanofsocialstandingwithaninheritedincome,hewasamemberoftheunionsofhisday. HebelongedtotheGuildof Goldsmiths.
Hewasacolourfulcharacter,andseemstohave beenaneligiblebachelorall hislife.Hispassionfor hisexperimentskepthim toooccupiedformarriage. Thisannoyedoneofthe morepersistentnobleladies ofStrasbourg,andshesued himforbreachofpromise.
