TheNorthamjubileehad beenprecededby,aMission preachedbytheRedemptoristFathers,whichclosedon thejubileeday. CelebrantoftheSolemn HighMasswastheRev.K. Crowe,C.Ss.R.TheRev. M.Newboldwasdeacon. andtheRev.K.Middleton, C.Ss.R.,sub-deacon.

HisGracewasassistedby theV.Rev.DeanLenihan, P.P.,andtheRev.J.Hogan. Theoccasionalsermon,giveninfullbelow,was preachedbyFatherCrowe.

DeanLenihanentertained theArchbishop,theAuxiliaryBishop(MostRev.L.J. Goody),formerpriestsof theparish,andpriestsofthe Avondistrictsdeaneryat luncheon.

Wereastrangertoenter St.Joseph'sthatmorning. saidFatherCrowe,hewould immediatelyperceivetheair ofjoyandfestivitypervadingthatholyplace.Theartisticdecorationofthealtar, theinspiringmusicofthe choir,theimpressiveceremoniesofaSolemnMass andespeciallythepresence onthesanctuaryofHis Grace,theArchbishopwouldconvincehimthatitmust beaveryspecialoccasion.

Andindeeditwas!Fifty yearsagothefoundation stoneofthatgrandold churchwaslaid.Thatgreat eventhadtobefittinglyce-

lebrated.AndDeanLenihan hadchosentheverybest waytodoit:-Aparish MissiontostirtheFaithand fervouroftheliving;a SolemnRequiemMassin remembranceofthedead, thepriests,Religiousandpa rishionerswhoweregone intoeternity;andthatmqrning,aSolemnMassof thanksgivingforthegraces andblessingsofthosefifty years.

Sometimesworldly-wise peopleasked:"Whatisthe senseofbuildingchurches? Mr.andMrs.J.McM. Cluneweremarriedat ToodyayinSept.,1902.But asfivegenerationsofthe Cluneshadindissolubly linkedtheirnamewithNew Norcia,itwasunanimously'decidedthatthereunion takeplacethere.

ThelateMr.Darcywas actingtownclerkduring theprolongedillnessofMr. H.Kingsburyandonhis deathin1946wasappointed tofillthevacancy.

Bornonthegoldfields, JamesHarteDarcywaseducatedattheChristian Brothers'college,Kalgoorlie, andatNewNorcia.HeoriginallyworkedfortheKalgoorlieTramwaysandlater wasemployedwiththefirm ofF.C.LangandCo.His firstpostwiththeKalgoorlie municipalitywasthatof costingclerk.Atonetimehe wassecretaryoftheMaster Butchers'association.

Duringhistermofoffice astownclerkcallsforservicetothecommunityin manyfieldsofactivity placedaseverestrainonhis physicalresources. HeenteredtheSt.John ofGodhospitalfortreatmentofanoldcomplaint, butcollapsedwhileundergoingaminoroperationand

failedtorally.Heleaves awidowandfourchildren.

"ThedeathofMr.Darcy removesfromthescenea goodmanwhowillbehard toreplace,"theMayorof Kalgoorlie,Mr.R.G.Moore, declaredinatributeMr. Darcy,headded,hadalways beenkeenonhisjobas townclerk.Worktohim hadbeennoworry.Hewas alwaysverydependable, veryloyalandveryefficient.

Apartfromthegreatloss tothecouncilandthetown, Mr.Darcy'sdeathwasa greatpersonalloss,saidthe Mayor.

Mr.Mooresaidthelate townclerkhadprovedhimselfinsomanywaysand wasawonderfulorganiser.

DeceasedwasaprominentCatholicwhoidentified himselfwithmanyCatholic activities,notablytheHoly Namesociety,St.Mary's tenniscub,andtheIrish NationalForestersBenefit society.

RequiemMasswasoffered inSt.Mary'schurch,Kalgoorlie,onAug.7,after whichthefuneraltook placeattheKalgoorliecemetery.

Hostsoftelegramswere read.congratulatingthejubilarians.BrotherGuibertusspokefeelinglyinproposingthemaintoastofthe evening.Herecalledthe jubiliarians'yearsofhappiness,theirever-generous andnever-tiringhospitality, andthedebtSt.Ildephonsus'owedtotheirsterling hospitalityoverthe40years thattheMaristBrothershad beenatNewNorcia.Theirs wasnowthefruitionpromisedinScriptureandeulogisedbyShakespeare. Theysawtheirchildren's childrenandwerenowsurroundedbytroops of friends.

Mr.J.J.Clune,ofNewmarracarra.thankedBrotherGuibertusonbehalfof

thefamily,feelinglyand withobviousdeepsincerity. Presentationsweremade tothejubilariansfromthe familyandfromfriendsfar andwide.

Mr.J.McM.Clunewasall butovercomeasheresponded.Emotion,however,didnotpreventhis voicingsincerelyhisthanks. Anexcellentmusicaleveningrenderedbythegrandchildrenandguestscompletedamosthappygathering.

AtHighMassontheSunday,thecollegechoirhad theprivilegeofsingingDom Moreno'sMissaNona,oneof thisbrilliantcomposer's mostsuccessfulcompositions.HolyMasswascelebratedbyV.Rev.Paul Arza,O.S.B.,prior,assisted bytheRev.BedeLazaro, O.S.B.,andtheRev.Aidan Duggan,O.S.B.AfterMass AbbotCatalanwelcomed thejubilariansandtheir family.AvisittoSt.Gertrude'sconventrecalled mosthappymemories.

Amostunexpectedand graciousgesturewasapresentationfromthenativesabriefspeechandakindly presenttoeachoftheir formerfriends.

BrothersEntertain St.Ildephonsus'college tenderedadinneratmidday.Atthemaintable wereseatedMr.andMrs. JMc,Cluneandtheirten children,alongwithBrothersLucianandGuibertus. Some50guestsinalljoined inrejoicingwiththetwo honouredvisitors.Toeach ofthejubilarianswaspresentedaRosary. Mr.J.B.Clune,withrare eloquence,withconviction, andwithlogicalstrength, thankedtheMaristBrothers, andintheirnameespeciallyRev.BrotherGuibertus. Thehappiestofgatheringsconcludedwithsigning souvenirmenusandwith photographsofthegathering. Whilerenovationswerein progresstheylivedinthe presbyteryandtaughtin theparishhallforthefirst termoftheschoolyear.As soonastheremainingpatientsweretransferredto thehospitalofSt.Johnof GodtheBrotherswereable tostartclassesinthenew building.Theremodellingof

HisGracetheArchbishop remarkedattheopening thattheMaristBrothershad aworld-widereputationas educatorsandtrainersof youth.Inwelcomingthem hepromisedhisco-operationinthisworkandsaid thathehopedthatthis,the firsthouseoftheMarist BrothersintheArchdiocese, wouldbethefirstofmany andwouldcontinuetogive toChurchandStatefaithfulheartsgroundedinpietyandpatriotism;readyto serve,tofight,andifnecessarytodieforAustrialiaas somanyofthepastpupils oftheMaristBrothershad done.

Inreviewingtheworkof thepastfouryearsBrother Bertinussaidthathewas wellsatisifedwiththe progressmade.St.Paul's wasasmallschoolbutwas accomplishingwhatthe Brotherscometheretodo, tobringsecondaryCatholic educationtotheboysofthe countryareas.

WhenMr.HawkeM.LA. spokeattheopeninghe stressedthenecessityofreligiouseducationinthe schools.Hetrustedthatthe Brotherswouldbegreatly blessedintheirwork,work onwhichinnosmallway thefuturepeaceofthe worldwouldrest.

Firstborninthehospital wasthesonofMrs.A.Halls, ofNortham.whowasborn at1a.m.onFeb.25,the dayaftertheopening.Anotherboy,thesonofMrs. A.Kennedy,wasbornat 7.20a.m.onthesameday.

Foursetsoftwinshave beenborninthepastthree months."Thankheavens wehaven'thadtripletsyet," oneofthestaffremarked, "butquinswerebornthe otherday-tothehospital cat!"Itwasfoundthat bothmotherandoffspring weredoingwell.

From1902to1910there were41admissionstothe school.Nowmorethan200 childrenarereceivingtheir educationintheSt.Joseph's school.Thisbuilding,which NorthamboastsofhavingthebiggestwasopenedbyBishopClime bellinWesternAustralia.DedicatedtoNov consideredoneofthefinestschools St.Patrick,itwasdonatedbyMrs.MichaelinAustraliaatthattime. FrancisO'Rourkeinmemoryofherhusband.Auniquefeatureofthe LandedinFremantleataitmightbe.ThelateBishopbuildingwasthattheroof costof£700,ithastaken theplaceofanhistoricbell whichlegendsayswasone oftheoldconvictbells.
