AnunusualexperiencebefelltheRev. J.Depiazziwhenhewasinvitedtoaddress aCongregationalYouthorganisationonthe claimsoftheCatholicChurchonSept.14.

TheinvitationwasoriginallyissuedtotheRev.R. Healy,assistantpriestat Claremont,bytheRev. EdwinWhite,Congregationalministerinthatarea.

FatherDepiazziaccepted theinvitationatFather Healy'srequest,andspoke for30minutesinaseries entitled"YourFaithand Mine."

Afteranattentivehearing,theyoungpeoplepresentaskednumerousquestionsconcerningtheBible, convents,Confession,the useofsacredimages,Purgatory,andthePope.

FatherDepiazziexpressedadmirationforthecourteous,candidandattentive interestoftheyoungCongregationalists,andalso thankstotheRev.E.White fortheinvitation.

Aroundthetopofthe bellisinscribedinLatin: "Prayforus,Jesus,Mary, SaintAgatha".Aroundthe bodyofthebellisalarge crossformedofstars,abasrelief(probablyofKing CharlesIIofSpainand anotherwhichmaybethe heraldicarmsofthedonor.

Aboutthelipofthebell theLatinlegendruns:"PresentedbyMasterBustamanteintheyear1676". Aparchment,givingthe storyoftheSellwillbe securedbeneathit,andthe interestinghistoricalrelic ofearlyCatholicdaysin thisStatewillbepreserved.

Hereitremaineduntil 1867whenitwastransferredtothebelfryofthe Cathedral(completedin thatyear.TheCathedral hadbeenopenedonSunday,Jan.29,1865).Theceremonywasperformedby BishopMartinGriver, O.S.B. After84yearsitwas removedtomakeway,in 1951,forthecarillonof11 bellsintherenovatedcampanile.

Sisterwasbornat PuetschbachintheWesterwald,Germany,onNovember2,1912.InJanuary, 1937,sheenteredtheSisters

TheSistersofMaryoftheCatholic Apostolate,afteronly15monthsinAustralia,sustainedtheirfirstgreatlossonAugust 31,whentheiryoungSisterSuperior,Sister MaryBonitos,wascalledtoGodatSt. John'shospital,Subiaco. ofMaryoftheCatholic Apostolate,anewSociety whichhadbeenfounded onlytenyearspreviouslyby thePallottine,Rev.Joseph Kentenich,S.A.C.

NorthamWillMark Church's50thYear

OnSept.28,Northamwillcelebratethe goldenjubileeoftheopeningofSt.Joseph's church.HisGracetheArchbishopwillpresideatSolemnHighMassthereat10a.m.

Thejubileefestivitieswill beprecededbyafortnight's Mission,preachedbytwo RedemptoristFathers,which commencedonSept.14.

Downtothecomingof FatherTreacyasfirstresidentpriest,Northam'sparochial-historycoincided largelywithYork's,of whichparishitwaspart.

ThehighlightofCatholic Northam'shistoryisthatthe priestinchargein1887was

consecratedfirstBishopof Gealdtontwoyearslater. TheRev.W.B.Kellywas alsothefirstWestAustraliantoentertheEpiscopate.

Thestoryofthose50 yearsisgiveninsomedetailonpage10.Following FatherReidy,theRev.John Lynchwasparishpriest from1941to1944.Then theV.Rev.DeanT.Lenihan wasappointedpastorand DeanoftheAvondistricts.

InJuly,afterherpostulancyshereceivedtheblue sergehabitfromthehands oftheFounder.Sixmonths latersheconsecratedherself totheMaterterAdmirabilis ofSchoenstatt,aspecial Consecrationwhichpreceeds Profession.HerfirstProfessioncameontheMay31, 1939andherfinalProfessiononJuly2,1946.

Duringhernovitiate, SisterMaryBonitasbegan hertrainingasanurse,and latersuccessfullyobtainedherdiploma.DuringtheWar shenursedillvariousmilitaryhospitals,andafterwardswasmadeSuperioressatthePallottineMission House, theseLimburg.During fewyearsSisterwit-nessedthemiraculous growthoftheSocietyof Mary;in1946thenumbers werearound1,500Sisters. todaytheynumbersome 2,000Sisters.AsProvinces

LATESISTERM.BONITAS wereformed,shebecame SuperioressoftheProvincialHouseoftheSistersat SalzigontheRhine.

In1949shewasplaced inchargeofanorphanage, andfromtherecametothe PallottineMissionschool, Tardun,forcolouredchildren.ShearrivedinApril lastyearwiththreeother Sisters,andendearedherselftoallbyheruntiring, selflesswork.InMayofthis yearshebecameseriously ill,andafterthreemonths ofintensepain,passedto herrewardonAugust31, R.I.P.

Thebellwaspresentedto theBenedictineabbeyofSt. Martinatcompostella, Spain,intheyear1676by one,MaestroBustamante.

BishopSalvado,whomade hisprofessionasaBenedictinemonkatthisabbey,

Thebell,whichhadpro- bablybeennamedinhonour ofSt.Agatha,hadnotbeen usedformanyyearsonaccountofhavingcracked.It wassand-blastedbefore LeinginstalledintheCathedral porch.

Aftermanymonthsofuneextainty,ithasnowbeen learnedthatmorethan ayearago,hedied(Feb. 21,1952),asaCommunist prisonerinCanton.News ofhisdeathwasbrought herebyaMaryknollSister, whohasservedBishopFord assecretaryformanyyears, hadbeenimprisonedwith himontrumped-upcharges shortlybeforeChristmas, 1950,andwasreleasedand expelledfromChinaafew daysago.

SisterJoanMarieRyan, whoarrivedhereweakand emaciatedwiththesad news,wastoldoftheBishop'sdeathonAugust16.A CantonprisonofficialinformedherthattheBishop haddiedof'oldageandillness,"despite"specialmedicalattention."Shewas forcedtosignacertificateto thateffect.

NewsofthedeathofBishopFordisallthemore shocking,asonlyafew weeksagothreeAustralian airmenarrivedhereafter theirreleasefromCanton prisonwithareportthat theyhadseentheBishop apparently"ingoodhealth, wellclothed,andreceiving adequatefood."

SisterJoanMariereportedthatshehadseenBishop Fordfourtimesduringtheir longimprisonment.Last Januaryshesawhimona stairway.Hewasemaciated,hishairwaswhite,and hehadalong,bushywhite beard.TheBishopwasso weakthathecouldnot walk,theSistersaid.

Twodayslater,shesaw theBishopagain,walking withdifficultyonthearmof anotherprisoner.Onthe thirdoccasion,sheobserved theBishopbeingcarried downaflightofstairs"like asackofpotatoes."She sawhimthelasttimeearly inFebruary,justafew weeksbeforehisdeath.

Forthenextthreemonths boththeBishopandtheSisterhadtoundergodaily"indoctrination" courses. TheSisterwasmadeto carrywaterinherbarefeet. Shewasnotpermittedto changeherclothesandslept onastonefloor.

TheladsofBindoonBoys'Townwere gatheredtocheerthearrivaloffourbuses andafleetofcarscarrying200members andfriendsoftheIrishclub,whentheyarrivedatthesettlementshortlyaftermidday onSundaylastfortheirannualoutingtoentertainthechildren.

Afterhavingrenewedacquaintancesoflastyear,the picnickerspartookoflunch onthelawnsinfrontofthe mainbuildings.Aftera hurriedinspectionofthe progressmadewiththe buildings,thechildren's sportswereheld.Events werearrangedtosuitthe differentagegroups,and largeentriesandkeenfinishesweretheorderofthe day.

Asportsprogrammefor adultsfollowed,inwhich competitionwasverykeen, yetfulloffun.Thencame asoccermatchbetweena NorthPerthselectionand theclubteam,the"ShamrockRovers."Itresulted inascorelessdraw.

Whilethegreaterpartof thevisitorspartookoftea, theboysplayedthedub tabletennisteam,andwo'h easily.Then,asthelight wasfailing,therefloated overthesurroundingbushlandtheliftofIrishairs tellingallthat'thefinalitem ofagoodday'sentertainmentwasabouttocommence,andtheBrothers, boysandvisitorsgathered foramixedgrillofconcert itemsandIrishfolkdancing, whichwasheldintheopen. open.

Alltheitemswerewell wellreceived,buttheone mostenjoyedbytheboys wasthatofMr.BrianWoodcock,whorenderedavery pleasingselectionofHillbillytunes,inwhichthe boysjoinedwithgusto.The Rev.P.McCuddenledaselectionofcommunityitems withhisaccordion.

Itemswerealsogivenby T.O'Brien,FergusColman (banjo),andMr.LeoMcCarronandBobMcInerney (duet).Themusicfor thedancingwassuppliedby FatherMcCudden,Mrs.E. O'Connor,Mrs.P.Maschmedt,Mr.T.O'Brien,Mr. FergusColman,andMr. RoyRussell.

Duringtheeveningeach boywasgivenaparcelof sweetsandbiscuits.Father McCuddenpresentedthe prizesduringtheinterval. HealsopresentedBrother Keaneywithtwobeautiful cupsonbehalfoftheclub,

fortabletenniscompetitions intheschool.Individual membersoftheclubdonatedanumberoftablegames andtabletennisoutfits whichweregiventoBrotherKeaneyforthegeneral useoftheboys.

Inthankingtheclubfor thegifts,BrotherKeaney saidhecouldeasilyunderstandtheeagernesswith whichtheboyslookedforwardtothevisitofthe Irishclub.Hesaidhewas verypleasedtoseethenumberofex-pupilsofBindoon whotravelledwiththeclub, andhehopedthatthey would-continuetopatronise theclubfunctions,asthey couldnotwishforcleaner orbetterentertainment.He issuedawarmwelcometo allthememberstovisit Bindoonasoftenaspossible,eithercollectivelyor individually.

FatherMcCuddenthankedBrotherKeaneyandthe otherBrothersfortheircooperation.Heissuedan openinvitationtoex-pupils ofBindoontoattendthe clubsocials.Healsothankedthevisitingartistsand theNorthPerthfootball club.

OnthetransferofFather WalshasDeanofYork,the lateFatherO'Donnellwas appointedtoNortham.He wasresponsibleforthe erectionofacommodious andsubstantially-builtnew school.Healsobuiltthe parochialhall.Theschools werebuiltin1912andthe hallin1928.Healsobuilt additionstothepresent presbytery.

IllhealthforcedFather O'Donnelltogoonanextendedholiday.Father JamesDunnewasappointed locumduringhisabsence.

FatherO'Donnell,however, diedinIreland,andFather Dunneremainedaspriestin charge;duringthistimea beautifulfencewaserected infrontofthechurch:the presbyterywasrefurnished, andtenniscourtswerelaid down.

Sir,-ThewholebodyofRomana,butwehaveto theChurchisengagedat presentinoneofthegreatestbattleinherhistorybutinthemostpromising one.

Newideas,spiritualrenewalsstartatthetopof society,inan"elite"whence itspreadsdowntothe masses.Thesecularismand materialismofthenineteenthcentury's"elite" reachedthemassesto-day andwefeelitspainfulpresence. Butifwewanttoestimate thespiritualityoftomorrow,wehavetolookatthe "elite"oftoday'ssociety. Thatviewfillsourhearts withjoyandhope.Itmakes usbelievethatweareexperiencingthesecond springtimeoftheChurch; wearelookingforwardto anepochwhichisasgreat astheMiddleAges.Itisthe secondspringoftheChurch aboutwhichthelateCardinalSuhardwrotehis marvellousandworld-famousPastoralLetterin 1947,outliningitstheoreticalfeatures.

PaxRomana'sWork

Amongthecountless examplesofthisrenewalthe Cardinalwasnotableto includeoneofourgreatest achievements.Inthesame year(1947),Catholicintellectualsfromsome20countriesgatheredinRometo placetheirforcesatthe serviceofChrist'sChurchin anewformofapostolate.It wastheInternationalCatholicMovementforIntellectualandCulturalAffairs whichwasformedatthat conference,thegraduate partofthealreadyexisting PaxRomana,theinternationalmovementofCatholic students.ThePaxRomana isthat"elite"ofCatholic laypeoplewhichisnow present-inthewordsof ourHolyFather-"whereverthereareconflictsin theworldofthought."

PaxRoinanahasbeen studyingthesubjectofthe congress-"TheMissionof theUniversity"-forthe lasttwoyears.Thiscongressisaturningpointin thehistoryofuniversities.

Eighthundredyearshave passedsincetheChurch formedthefirstuniversities, eighthundredyearsthrough whichmostoftheuniversitieshave"emancipated" themselvesfromtheir Mother.This"emancipation" seemstobecomingtoan endnow.

Alargebrickchurchwas erectedin1894,andblessed byBishopGibneyonMarch 17ofthatyear.Atpresent MassissaidthereonalternateSundays.

We,WestAustralianstudents,areinmanyaspects afewstepsbehindthefirst ranksofPaxRomana.But thisbackwardnessisonlya matteroftime,sincewe havethespiritofPaxRomana.ThegreatandimportantdecisionoftheHierarchytoestablishaCatholiccollegewithintheuniversityisanorganicpart ofagreatmovementwithin theChurchtoday.Andthe marvellousresponseofthe WestAustralianCatholics totheappealisatruemanifestationofthatspiritwhichleadsCatholicsall overtheworldtotaketheir shareinourspiritualrenewal.Whenweseethepray ers,sacrificesandworksof Catholicintellectualsinthe sixContinentswecanbe proudoflaunchingourUniversitycollege.Thecollege willbetheplacewhere thosewhoformthemindof tomorrowwillbeeducated. TheGermanBishopsdeclarethat"whilethehearts ofmenhavebecomewidely secularized,"thereismuch tobegratefulforinthebresentsituationoftheChurch inGermany.
