Clothofgoldvestmentsdarkhollowsurroundedby andclothofgolddalmaticstrees.Itwasatiringtrek usedinthecelebrationofthroughthesandtothe HighMassblendedrichlychurch-school,andonsome withthealtar,somagnifi-morningstheSisterswalkcentlyarrayedwithapro-edittwice,onceforMass, fusionofdaffodils.Thehomeforbreakfast,and Rev.D.Downey,P.P.,wasthenagainbacktoschool. celebrant;theRev.J.Mc-NoneoftheSisterswasroSweeney,deacon;andRev.bust,andtheyfoundthis E.McSweeney,sub-deacon;walkingthroughheavy .theRev.J.Mullinswasmas-sandoverthehillsdifficult terofceremonies. andtiring.

Thesingingthroughoutthe Masswasrenderedintwo partsbytheconventschool choir.Thebeautifulinterpretationwonunanimous praise.

ThePresentationSisters, saidMonsignorMcMahon, camefromHay,N.S.W.,to SouthernCrossin1900.The pioneerswereledbyMother AngelaTreacy,andincludedMothersJohn,Paul,and 'Columba.ItwasFather Duffwhosuggestedtothe Sistersthattheyshouldestablishaconventschoolat Collie,whose.greenfields andtree-coveredhillswould remindthemoftheirnative Irishcountryside.

Suchwastheinauspicious beginningofthespiritual daughtersofNanoNaglein Collie.Theworkofthe PresentationSistersinColliethroughout50golden yearscouldnotbeestimatedintermsofhuman values;thefruitsoftheir labourswererecordedin heaven,anditwastherea justrewardawaitedthem.

Andnowthatwe,hisold boys,aregettingoninyears werealisewhatatrialwe oftenweretohim.Atthe time,andespeciallywhenhe hadtousethestrap,which weoftendeservedsomuch, wesometimesfeltithard. Butwealwaysknewthatit wasfairplayandthatwe nevergotanythingbuta fairdealfromBrotherLouis. Weknewthen,andwe knowbetternow,that BrotherLouiswasalwaysa fathertous,andthathe lovedandstilllovesus,as hisownchildren.

Wehope,then,dear BrotherLouis,thatbythis littleentertainment,andthe fewpresentswehavegut foryou,youwillunderstand whatwefeelaboutallyour hardworkforus,andthe loveyoubearus.Wehope thatyourjubileewillbring withitgreatjoyandhappiness.Wealsohopeand praythatGodmaygiveyou

BrotherLouisisaliving exampleoftheoldBenedictinemotto,"Prayand Work."Nowhecanlook backon50yearsofconsistentprayer,manualandintellectualwork.For30years hawasinchargeofthe NativeBoys'orphanage.He thenwastheAbbeyrefectorianfor21years.Andnow hehelpsinthelibrary.This jobhefindsmostcongenial, beingthegreatbook-lover thatheis.Heremarkedthe otherdaythathenever thoughtthatoldage-heis now79-couldbesopeacefulandhappy.

Perhapsinourdaythere isnothingquitesoterrible astheblindness'ofthemen withthebigtelescopes.All kindsofgadgets,likeradar, substituteforthehuman eye,butnone.ofthem piercesbeyondtheconfines ofeternity.Sometimesindeedthevisionofthatinwardeyeisobstructedbya mountainofpride.."But iftheeyethatisintheebe darkness,thedarknessitself howgreatshallthatbe?"

ExileFromHeaven

ParentsMaySpoilChild'sChance'

Parentsoftenexperience greatdifficultyinguiding theirchildrenintosuitable work,andsometimesdespite theirgoodintentions,they makeseriouserrors.Itmay beofsomeinteresttoreaderstolistsomeofthetypes oferrorwhichwerefound prevalentamongparentsvisitingtheCatholicVocationalGuidanceAuxiliaryduringthelast18months. Someoftheseerrorsare causedbyparentsmisjudgingtheirchildren,others, bytheirmisjudgingoccupations.

Manyboyswhowould makegoodtradesmenare thuscondemnedtoonly mediocresuccessina "white-collar"job.Aboy whowantstobeabrick layer,shouldnotbecompelledtobeadraftsman, especiallyifhehasneither thetastenorthetalentfor drawing,orforadvanced studies.

Moreover,itisconsding toknowthattheCatholic Faithisnotanexclusiveclubforsaintlypeople.Itwascreatedby Christforhelpingsinners nottobeovercomebysin. For.mostmenbattleonthat borderlinebetweenthepossessionandforfeitureof God'sgrace.

DrawingAllThings

Itisaverygreatevent indeedthatGodhasahome inSt.George'sterrace. ByFrancisGilbert withoutparents...sometimes,theymaybetempted tothink,withoutGod. Theprinter'sapprentice maynotappreciateallthat inpreciseterms.Buthe sensestheirlonelinessfrom whichstemsaloofness.He understandssomethingof theirisolationbecausehe praysforthembeforeHim Whotradedheavenfor earthforoursalvation.Our Lord,too,isinexileeven asOurLadywaspictured byChestertonasastranger inheaven.Soattheend ohisRosaryforhisNew Australianfriends,the youngprinterprayswith greatsincerity:"toThee'do wecry,poorbanishedchildrenofEve." Thelawyerbelongstoa praesidiumwhoseworkis thepromotionofconversions.Heundertakesthis jobbecause,beinganeducatedmananddeepinfaith, herealisesthatitisfar moreimportantthatall shouldbeCatholicthanthat theyshouldbedemocrats, republicans,whitemen, heroesorwealthy.Indeed, ifallourcitizenswereone infaithandcharity,like theirforefathers,manyof ourexpertscouldretireto devotethemselvestoreally productivework.

So,havingreceivedthe Lord'sSupperinthatlittle UpperRoom,ourlawyer friendremembersandrepeatsthewordssaidbyHis

Abusyselectionofficer onceremarkedthatmore promisingcareerswere ruinedattheinterview stagethanatanyother point.Hesaidthatinhis ownexperiencehehadbeen amazed,andattimesdisgusted,bytheattitudeof someparentsandbythebehaviouroftheirchildrenat aninterviewwhichwasto decidethefutureofthe child-surelyaproblem whichrequiredthedeepest thoughtandconsideration.

UndueDominance

Someparentsdonotwish towastetimediscussing thevarioustypesofopenings,whichmightsuittheir child.Theydemandalist ofvacanciesofalmostany type,andhastentogetthe childemployedwithout delay.Thisusuallyleadsto misplacement,andachange ofworklateron,Happily, thistypeis rare.

Somechildrenarebadly spoiledandtheirparents expectadvicetoworkmiracles.Noadvicecanbeof anyuse,unlessparentshave trainedtheirchildrento followit,andtosacrifice presentpleasuresforfuture satisfaction.

ThereisanoticeabletendencyamongCatholicparentstourgetheirchildren toenterthePublicService. Theyareobsessedwiththe goalof"security"aboveall others.Thereareverygood reasonsforrecommending thePublicService,especiallytocertaintypesofchildren,butforaladofcourage,initiative,smartnessandindependence,theremaybebetteropportunitiesinpri- vateindustry.Itcannotbe regardedasdesirablethat somanyCatholicchildren shouldbetrainedtoplay safe,andtoavoidindepen-denceandresponsibility.
