Deathcamesuddenly,butnotunpreparedly,forMr.AlfredStinson,fatherofthe Rev.C.Stinson,directorofCatholicMigration.Hecollapsedanddiedafterthe10 o'clockMasslastSundayatSt.Mary's church,Kalgoorlie.

Deceased,whowas76 yearsofage,hadleftthe churchafterMassandwas onhiswaytovisithiswife, whohasbeenapatientfor thepasttwoandahalf yearsinSt.JohnofGod hospital,Kalgoorlie.

Mr.Stinsonsuffereda heartseizurefromwhichhe diedimmediately.TheRev. H.Middleton,oftheGeraldtondiocese,whowasvisitmghisparentsontheGoldfields,wasalsoonhisway tothehospital.Hurriedly headministeredthelast Sacraments.

Mr.andMrs.Stinsonhave livedinKalgoorlieforalmost50years.TheirmarriagewassolemnisedinSt. Mary'schurchin1905. NowEighty-Two

Br.Bradley,nowinhis eighty-secondyear,comes fromRockfordBridge,near Mullingar.Westmeath,one ofsevenchildren,fiveof whomarestillliving.Two areSistersofNazarethat presentinDevonshire,Eng- land:one,aftermanyyears inNewZealand,theother reurningfromCalifornia.

Br.Bradleyenteredthe ChristianBrothers'novitiateonSept.7,1892.Two yearslaterhewasinAustralia,landingatAlbanyon Jan.6,1894whileonhis waytoMelbourne.Butthe sameyearsawhimbackin Perthwhereheremained forfiveyears. Forthenextfiveyeahhe wasinAlbany,untilthe closingoftheBrothers' schooltherein1903.Now, afteralapseof50years, thereareprospectsofthe Brothersreturningtoteach inAlbany.Duringthose50 yearsBr.Bradleytaughtin nearlyeveryStateofAustralia.Hismostmemorable years,perhaps,werethose spentinRockhampton.

Thepasttwelveyearshe hasspentinWestAustralia oncemore-Castledare, Aquinas,Fremantleand sevenyearsinLeederville. Onlyforthepasttwoor threeyearshasBr.Bradley beenrelievedofthefull responsibilityofaclass.But hestilltakesaclassfor Christiandoctrine,prepares thegroupforfirstHoly Communion,andlikesto handlethegroupsofboys senttohimforalittle coaching.

Despitehisyearsheis stillveryactive.Indeedhe cannotkeepstill.Hemust alwaysbedoingsomething, repairinghissocks,clearing thetable,bringinginthe morning'smilk,answering allbells-butthelistwould betoolong.Heendeavours tobeofassistancetoeverybody.Butparticularlyhe knowswhatitistopray, andunderstandsprofoundly

thevalueoftheMass-not missinganychanceofattendinganother.

NarrowlyAdmitted

Andyethowverynear wasBr.Bradley'scareer frombeingcompletely changed.Whenhefirstappliedforadmissiontothe ChristianBrothers,he shortlyhadtoleaveand returnhome.Hishealth madehisacceptanceimpossible-hewassubjectto asthma,whichonoccasion prostratedhimseverely. Buthe/outgrewthisailment,soughtreadmission, andaftermorethanone doctoibsclearanceonhealth groundswastardilyreadmitted.

Mayhebesparedmany moreyearstoinfluence thosewithwhomhelives byhispunctuality,hisspirit ofprayer,hisself-sacrifice, andtoleaventheworkof theschoolsbyhisprayers.

WiththeclosingonSundaylastofthe lastofthisyear'sthreeencloses"Retreatsfor membersoftheHolyNamesociety,atotal of144Retreatantsfortheyearwasrecorded. ThefirstRetreat,heldAugust23-24wasattended duringJuly,hasalreadyby47membersandwas beenreportedintheseconductedbyRev,Father columns.Thesecond,heldMiddletonC.Ss.R. fromAugust16-17wasconductedbytheV.Rev,P. TaltyC.Ss.R.andwasattendedby49members.The finalretreatheldfrom

WhentheRev.PaulAug.31,at10amandon Sept.7and14atthesame placeandcametime.Hewill bestayingatSt.Louis school(phoneF1122).

Becs,S.J.,arrivedatGuildfordairportfromHawthorn,Victoria,onAug.25, hewasmetbytheV.Rev. T.Barden,S.J.,rectorofSt. Louisschool,Claremont. Later,attheJesuitschool, adelegationofLatvianCatholicswelcomedtheLatvianpriestandpresented himwithabouquetofflowers.

FatherBecswillspend threeweeksinthisState ministeringtoLatvianNew Australians.Hesaidhe wouldbeverygratefulif parishpriestswouldnotify theCatholicMigration office,62St.George'sterrace(phoneBA3338)of anyLatviansintheirdistrict,astherewouldbeopportunitiesforthemtogo toConfessionintheirown tongue,andhewouldtryto visitthem.

Questionedaboutthestate oftheChurchinRussianoccupiedLatvia,Father Beessaidthatsomechurcheswerestillopen,but hadtopayextortionate taxes.Manyhadtobe closedbecausetheycould notpay.Manypriestsand Bishopshadbeensentto Siberia.Hehadheard nothingofhisownfamily since1948,saidFatherBees. CatholicsinLatviahad been24percentofthepopulation,buthadbeensituatedintheareasfirstoccupiedbytheRussians.

Therewereabout20,000 LatviansinAustralia,continuedFatherBees:butonly aboutninepercentofthese wereCatholics.Theywere ministeredtospirituallyby himselfandanotherLatvianJesuitstationedin

FatherBeeswillcelebrate MassforLatviansinthe LegionofMarychapel,St. George'sterrace,onSunday,Sydney.

-ThetotalnumberofRetreatantsthisyearwas144, agreatimprovementonthe previousyear'sfigure.Rev. FathersTaltyandMiddletonexpressedthemselvesas delightedwiththefervour withwhichmembersmade theirspiritualexercisesand observedtheruleofsilence.

Thearrangementswere excellent,therebeingshort periodsofrestbetweenthe variousspiritualexercises andlecturesbutthetime beingsufficientlyoccupied toensurethemaximum spiritualbenefit.

Members'Gratitude

Thebalancebetween youngandmoremature memberswasideal.Itwas mostgratifyingtohear members,especiallythe youngerones,whohadnot previouslymadeanenclesedRetreat,statethatthey "wouldcertainlynotmiss nextyear'sRetreats."Presentindicationsarethat threeweek-endswillbefar fromsufficienttoaccommodatenextyeai'sapplicants.

Retreatantsareunanimousintheirrequestthat theSocietyexpresstoRev. FathersTallyandMiddletontheir'sincerethanksfor theirservices,andtothe Brothersofthemonastery fortheirexcellentcatering andcomfortableaccommodation.

Therealreason,however, whyIhavewrittenatsuch lengthandaskedthatthis controversybeended,is foundinthelastparagraph ofPaulO'Donnell'sletter.

Sir,-MrO'Donnellfrets becausehischargesarenot directlyanswered.Iwill endeavourtodoso.Firstly, theMovementhasnograduateexistence.Whyshould ithave?Themovementslimitingageistwenty-five. Whenamemberretireshe mayjointheLegionorthe St.VincentdePaulsociety -bothexcellentexamplesof CatholicActionbytheway. HisGracetheArchbishop, onanotheroccasion,remarkedthatheknewofonlyone placethatcouldsurpass ShentonParkinmattersof thisnatureandthatplace wasShentonPark.The truthofhiswordswasdemonstratedbytheattendancethisyearwhenthe all-timerecordnumbersof 450childrenand470adults packedthehalltocapacity.
