HisGracehopeditwould bepossibletogetasmall staffofteachers,asitwas toofartothenearestschool, and.moreover,allschools werealreadytaxedto capacity.Hecongratulatedthepeopleonthesacrificestheywerepreparedto maketomeetthecostofthe

ThreebusesamidanambulanceprovidedbytheRed Crossandseveralprivate carsbroughttheblindfrom theHowardstreetmeeting pointtothehall.Although theassemblytimewasset fortwoo'clock,manyof themhadarrivedmuchearlier.

ThefunctionwasorganisedbytheBraillepraesidiumoftheLegionof Mary,whichconductsa monthlysocialinthePleiades clubfortheblind,whoare broughtinbyprivatecars fromprivatehomesandinstitutionsthroughoutthe metropolitanarea.These

socialsareverypopularand are,inmanycases,theonly recreationaloutingsenjoybythesepeople.Afeature ofeachsocialisthepresentationofacaketothose whosebirthdayfallswithin themonth.

Thepraesidiumalsostages arivertripeachFebruary fortheblind,themajority ofwhomarenon-Catholics. Membersarealsoengaged inthetranscribingofbooks, prayers,leafletsandother readingmatterinbraille andthevisitationofthe blindintheirhomes.There are10activelegionariesin thepraesidiumwhosechaplainistheRev.T.Ahern.

Isupposeitishardto evadetheadmissionthatthe MoretonBayfigtreewasin theway:certainlyitwasa nuisancewithitsrootsobtrudingthroughthebitumenofthefootpath.Its too-ampleshadeadumbratedthenurses'quartersof theRoyalPerthhospital: possiblyitsupperlimbsinterferedwiththetelephone wires.Butinthefaceof alltheseformidablereasons Iwassorrytoseeitmutilated.

Thehacking-awayofthose sturdyrootsbeneaththe footpathdivertedattention fromthemajorsurgeryperformedonitsupperbranches.ButasIwalked eastwardsinMurraystreet onemorningIcaughtmy breathquickly,forthere, caughtintheforkoftwo stubbyamputatedlimbs wastheMotherofGod. I didnotthinkIhadhada vision,butIwasreminded

powerfullyofhowatFatimashehadstooduponthe limbofalittleoak,andat Lourdesinthemidstofa briarrose. Whathadhappened,of course,wasthat,forthe firsttimeinI-don't-knowhow-manyyears,thepeopleofPerthcouldseethe statueofOurLadyforthe wholelengthofMurray street.Andwhatismore important,OurLadycould seethem.

WhatdoesOurLadysee fromherelevatedniche?On herrightshecanseeinits entiretytheRoyalPerth hospital,andthatisaplace ofveryspecialinterestto her.Foritisnotthejoy oftheworld,buttheworld's painthatcouldmeanso muchtoitsredemption.She istheMotherofSorrows, notbecauseofthememory ofallshesufferedunderthe Cross,butbecausemendo

notavailthemselvesofthe highroadofsuffering which,unitedtohers,could contributeimmenselytothe salvationandsanctification ofmen.

OnherleftisthePalace, wheretheArchbishopand thepriestsoftheCathedral parishdwell,ForthemOur Ladymusthaveaspecial veneration,forthediocese isconsecratedtoherImmaculateHeart,theCathedralisdedicatedinherhonour,andeachweektheperpetualNovenaofherMiraculousMedalislargelyattended.Noone,apartfrom herSon,hasagreaterappreciationoftheterrible dignityofthepriesthood, andnoonehasgreater powertomakeeffectivethe workoftheapostolate.

OurLady'seyesmove downthelefthandsideof Murraystreetandpause overtheheadquartersofthe FireBrigade.Shethinks withoutdoubtofthevictims ofthatbeneficentelement which,onceoutofcontrol, canbesolethal.Herlips moveinsupplicationforthe soulsoffirevictimsandfor theheroismofthemenwho putfiresout.Shepraysfor lonelysettlersoftheoutbackthreatenedyearafter yearwiththeterrorofbushfire.

Butmostofall,her thoughtsmaybeofwhather Sondescribedasthe"fire thatisnotextinguished." Shethinksofthesoulswho areandwillbeforever alienatedfromtheloveof Godineternaltorment.She prays,asshetaughtthe childrenofFatimatopray"saveusfromthefiresof hell."

Thenonoverthebusiness sectionofthecity,herintercessiontakesinthe workerswhocouldwork morehonestlyandtheemployerswhocouldpaymore justly.Shewantsthem all,however,toremember thattherearehigherand mostlastingvaluesinlife thanmerebusiness.

Anaturalyouthfulenthusiasmforspeedwasapparentinthe-verybrilliant giguewithwhichtheVivaldiSonatainDMajor(the openingwork)concluded. Yettheplayingwasalways clearandprecise.

Aviolinarrangementof theChopinnocturneinC SharpMinorandSaintSaens"Introductionand RondoCapriccioso"composedthesecondhalfof theprintedprogramme,and bothworkswereplayed withcareandfinish,the Chopinworkwithexquisite delicacy.

Theaudiencewasmost persistentinitsapplause, andtheyoungviolinistplayedfiveencores,eachfull ofzestandexuberance.
