ThatisBishopFultonJ. Sheen'sterseaccountofhis firstconversationwithan attorneyandeducatorwho wasthenthiscountry'stop womancommunistandis now-threeyearslater-a converttotheCatholic Faith.

BishopSheenrecalled todayhisfirstconversation withDr.BellaV.Dodd,Italian-bornNewYorkattorney,whowasforfour yearstheonlywoman memberoftheNational CommitteeoftheCommunistPartyintheUnited States.'

"Dr.Doddfirstcameto meearlyin1949,"Bishop Sheensaid."Shehadbeen senttomeby congressmantodiscusscommunism."

Althoughherefusedto talkcommunismwithDr. Doddandinsistedontalkingabouthe.soul,BishopSheenrelates"Shedidnot comeintotheChurchthen -infactv.-bensheleftmy officethatdayshehadnot

decidedanything,"hesaid. "Butthechangebegan then."

Dr.Doddreturnedlater totalktotheBishop,and earlierthisyearhebaptized herandgaveherherfirst CommunionatSt.Patrick's Cathedralhere.

"Whenshebegantotake instructionintheFaithshe wasareceptivestudent," BishopSheensaid."Butshe wasnotreceptiveatthat firstmeeting."

TheBishopaddedthat Dr.Doddwasquickandintelligentingraspingpoints abouttheFaithduringher instruction.Herconversion, hesaid,hasbroughtheran evidentpeaceofsoulthat shedidnotknowbefore. "Shehasmanytimesexpressedherhappinessatthe newpeacethathascometo her,"hesaid.

In1944shewaselectedto theCommunistParty'stap governingbody,theNationalCommittee,andshe servedonituntil1948.

InJune,1949,afterher earliestvisitswithBishop Sheen,Dr.Doddwasexpelledfromthecommunist party.

HisGraceremarkedthat therewere15,500children intheCatholicschoolsof theState,apartfromthose accommodatedintheorphanages.Theaveragecost totheStateforStateeducationwas£272sperchild. Thatwasthe1949-50figure, whichnodoubthadrisen since.

ThusCatholicseffectedan annualeconomytotheState ofnearlyhalfamillion pounds.TheArchbishop saidhewasmoreandmore hopefulthatthedaywasnot

fardistantwhenthatin.fusticewouldberemediedmil, insteadofbeingpenalised, justicewouldbemetedout toCatholicsfortheirmarvellouscontributiontothe educationalsystemofthe Commonwealth.

TheArchhishopthanked thearchitect,Mr.E.LeB. Henderson,forhisverynice design.andMessrs.Smith andCribbfortheirvery fineworkmanship.

Theappealwasmadeby FatherO'Callaghan,aformerparishpriestofBeverley,and£500wascontributed.

TheMotherSuperiorandtheSistersof St.JohnofGodwerewiththe300patientsto welcomeSirCharlesandLadyGairdneron theirarrivalattheDerbyleprosariumrecently.

Touringtheinstitution, theirExcellencieswere agreeablysurprisedandimpressedbywhattheysaw. Thebeautifullykerit,lawns, withflowersinbloom,came asanagreeablesurprise.

Lateratapublicrecep. tioninDerby,theGovernor stated:"Theleprosariumis thefinestinstitutionofits kindIhaveevervisited.I havetravelledtheworld, butIhaveseensomethingI haveneverseenbefore;indeed.Ifeltverysmallin thatvisittotheleprosarium."

ChapelIsInspected Hospitalwards,huts,and kitchenswereinspected,and thenewly_erectedCatholic chapel,withitsstainedglass windowsandaltarofred Australianguminlaidwith mother-of-pearlshell.DesignedbyaPallottineBrother,andbuiltbythepatientsunderhisdirection,

itisnowoneofthewonders ofthisuniquecolony.

Since1936theSistersof St.JohnofGod,attherequestoftheStateGovernment,nurseandtendall thosewhosufferfromleprosy.Thedisease,which fromantiquityhasbeenthe scourgeofmankind,wasintroduced,itisbelieved,by orientalswhocametoAustraliainthelastcenturyin questofpearls.Theaborignalwayoflife,withits lackofhygieneandsuch customsaschewingtobacco andpassingItfrommouth tomouth,addedimpetusto thespreadofthedisease.

FederalandStategovernmentssoughttocheckits spreadbyestablishingleprosariaatvariouscentres. Withfaithandfortitudethe Sistershaveconsecrated theirlivestothoseafflicted withthedisease,andthe Governmenthasnotbeen slowtorecognisetheir Christlikeheroism.

LateKing'sFavour

ThelateKingGeorgeVI. conferredtheO.B.E.onone oftheSistersinrecognition forherservices.Thereare morethan300patientsin theinstitutionatpresent, approximately200ofwhom areCatholic.Neithertheir physicalnorspiritualwelfareisneglected;aPallottineFatheractsaschaplain totheCatholiccommunity there,whiletheSistersnot onlynursebuttraintheir chargesinusefulartsand evenmusic.

Afterlunch,SirCharles andLadyGairdnerwere conductedtotheauditorium, wherethebandofstringedinstrumentsentertained theirExcellencieswithclassical,modernandold-time music.AtableauofBritanniaandachorusofgirls eachwavingaUnionJack remindedtheaudiencethat thesepeople,thoughcolour_ ed,weretrueAustralians andsubjectsoftheQueen. ThelittlechapelofSt.organisedtotakeplaceon FrancisofAssisiatMaidathesecondSundayinNoVale,formerlyafruitpackingshed,standing amongstcitrustrees,within sightofthelowhillsofthe DarlingRange,ontheEast BelmontroadtoKalamunda, wasfirstusedasaMass centreinJune,1950,when theparishpriestofGuildiord,theRev.F.Ryan, startedfortnightlyMasses.

OnAugust31,1950,when administeringConfirmation to22children,HisGrace theArchbishopexpressed thehopethattheCatholics ofthedistrictwouldsoonbe abletobuildasmallchurch.

Thenumbersattending Missincreasedsosteadily thatinDecember,1951,the parishionersdecidedto purchaseasiteforaschool andchurch.Averyvaluable seven-acreblockwasofferedtothematacostso smallastorivaltheproverbialsong,andtheylost notimeineffectingthe purchase

AtEasterofthisyear, HisGracetheArchbishop grantedthenecessarydispensationforMasstobe saidintheopen,because thechapelhadbecomefar toosmalltocontaintheincreasedcongregation.

TheRev.P.McCudden wasappointedtocelebrate Massweekly,andithas nowbecomeclearthatsome effortmustbemadetoobtainmoreaccommodation.

Twenty-oneyearsago,in 1931,CellNo.8wasjust anothercellintheholdover. Itwasoneofablockof cellsusedtoconfinethelesserviolatorsofthelaw-the streetdrifters,thetramps, thedown-and-outers,the bottlejockeys,thepanhandlers-menarrestedforvagrancy,forbeingdrunkon thestreets,for"havingno visiblemeansofsupport," orfordisturbingthepeace. Sometimestheywerebooked forappearanceinpolice court;sometimestheywere releasedafteratwentyhourinvestigationperiod.

Nothingisknownofthe identityoftheartistwho drewthesceneofthecrucifixion,otherthanthathe musthavebeenoneofthe thenoccupantsofCellNo.8. Bythetimethedrawing wasdiscoveredandhad beguntoattractattention, manymenhadoccupiedthe cellandgoneontobeswallowedupintheanonymity ofthecitystreets.

Hisidentityforever shroudedinmystery,theunknownartisthasbecomea legend.Fortwenty-one yearsspeculationabouthim hasneverceased.Whowas he,thismanwholeftsomethingofhimselfonthe wallsofaholdovercell? Whatwasthestoryofhis life?Hadheoncebeena decent,respectedmemberof society,perhapssomeoneof prominence,ofprestige?

theirbunks,theirheadspillowedintheirarms,while othersstandendlesslybeforethesteelbars,staring outintothecorridor.

Thisonemanisoblivious tohiscompanions,tohis surroundings.Thisman draws.Heisgivingexpressiontosomething-somethingburieddeepinsidehim. Hedrawsontheonlyclear, openwallhecanfindinthe cell.Itmattersnottohim thatthewallisflankedon eithersidebysanitaryfacilities.Perhapshedoesnot seethem.

Butperhapsthat,too,was ofnoconsequence.Perhaps hedidnotneedto.Itmay behetookwithhimsomethinginfinitelymoreprecious,somethingthatwas rebornduringthetortured travailofhisspirit,therein thatsteel-walledcellthe miracleofregeneration,ofa reawakenedsoul.Wemay besurehedidnotneedthe picturedChristonthewall; hehadfoundChristinhis ownheart.

ThedaywasSunday, June7,1885.Thecelebrant oftheMasscametothe altarrailtoreadtheGospelandtoaddresshiscongregation.Hisremarksusuallybeganwiththehallowed,"Mybethren,"buttodayhesubstitutedthesimpleyeasignificant,"We lepers."Bythesewords thespeakerwasconveying totheaudienceforthefirst timethefactthathe,too,at last,hadcontractedthe dreadeddiseaseofleprosy andnowwasoneofthem, inthefullsenseofthe word.

ThepriestwasFather DamiendeVeuster,aBelgianandareligiousofthe SocietyoftheSacredHearts ofJesusandMary.Hewas speakingtotheleperson theislandofMolokai, "AFathertoYou"

FatherDamienhadcome totheislandinMayof1873, athisownrequest,after hearingBishopMaigretof Honoluludescribetoa groupofpriestsattendinga churchdedicationthevery sadconditionsandplightof thelepersonMolokai.'If youwillbekindenoughto allowit,"hesaidlaterto theBishop,"Iwillgoto Molokaiandlabourforthe poorlepers,whosewretchedstateofbodilyandspiritualmisfortunehasoften madeMyheartbleedwithinme."

Withinhoursofhisrequestthepriestwasonhis way,inthecompanyofthe Bishop,totheislandof Molokai.Thesteamerthat carriedthemwasnCtpermittedtodockatthepier. Therestofthedistancehad tobenegotiatedbyrowboat.BesidesFatherDamientherewasashipment of50lepersbeingput ashorethatday.TheBishopwasnotallowedtoland. Fromastandingpositionin theboat,somewhatremovedfromtheshore,Bishop Maigretblessedthepeople ofMolokai,andinaloud voiceaddressedthosestandingonthebanksandpier: "Sofar,mychildren,you havebeenleftaloneand uncaredfor.Butyoushall besonolonger.Behold,I

Thiswasaworthyandfittingprefacetothebookof lifeFatherDamienwasto writeinanapostolateof serviceandsacrifice.Molokainowbecamehispermanenthomeandhismissionfield.Hewasthen33 yearsold.Hestillwould have15yearsmoreoflife inwhichtolabourandto performhisministry.Death wouldclaimhissoulon MondayofHolyWeek, April15,1889.Hisageat deathwouldbe49.Leprosywastowastehisbody inthelastfouryearsofhis life.Theseweretherealitiesthattheprovidenceof Godwastounfoldbefore theeyesofFatherDamien ashesetabouthisapostolateinMay,1873,onthe islandofMolokai. Theconditionsonthe islandbeggareddescription. Theleperpopulationatthe timewasabout1,000,There werenodoctorsornursesto careforthem,norhospitals toreceivetheirailing bodies.Hovelsservedas homesinwhichtherewas littleconcernforevenordinarysanitaryprecautions. Manywerehomelessand unclothed. Irreligionwas rampantamongthemand notafewgavethemselves todrinkandimmorality. Theislandhadrightlybeen dubbedthe"LivingGraveyard."

Today,themortalremainsofFatherDamienno longerrestinthesoilof Molokai.In1936attherequestoftheKingofBelgium,theywereexhumed andtransportedwithfull militaryhonourstoBelgium.ButwhereverFather Damien'sbodymayrest,his namewillalwaysbe synonymouswithMolokai.
