Allmetropolitanbranches oftheMovementwererepresentedattheparty,as wellasanumberofJoan's friends.andseveralMovementchaplains.

TheRev.J.Bourkemade apresentationtoJoanof behalfoftheMovement.He thankedherforherfine work,bothontheexecutive,andalsoasorganising secretaryoftheN.C.G.M. basketballassociation.He expressedhisownandthe Movement'sgoodwishesfor allGod'sblessingsinher futurevocation.

Sir,-Theletterspublishedin"TheRecord"recently, relatingtotheY.C.W.and N.C.G.M.,havecontained a, numberofpoints,someof whichareverygood,but someofwhichbearstriking evidenceofalackofknowledge,bothoftheMovements,andtheworkthey aretryinglibdo.

Whenhesaidthat'the Movementsrequiredtheinterest,supportandencouragementofparents,Eugene Palswasverycorrect.Seeminglytoprovethislackof interest,thefollowingissue of"TheRecord"contained aletterfrom"Parent,"who soughtaregularweekly danceorganisedbytheMovements.Hadhe,orshe, takenthetrouble.tofindout, "Parent"wouldhaveknown ofthefirst-classdancesrun onalternateSaturdaynights, atSubiacoandHighgate.

Everyweek,morethan threehundredyoungpeople havedecententertainment providedforthem.Iextend aninvitationto"Parent," andanyotherpersoninterested,tovisitoneofthese dances,andseejusthow goodtheyare.Orperhaps hemightliketoattendone ofthedancesheldatthe Y.A.L.everymonth,at whichwehavehadasmany assixhundredandfifty youngpeople.

Whenhespeaksofthe advantagesofasprinkling ofolderpeople"Militant" obviouslyforgetstheinterestofchaplains,whohave beenappointedtoeach group.Werelyon,andhave alwaysbeengiven,the utmosthelpandguidance fromourpriests,butthey donotruntheMovements forus.Theydonotwishto, astheyknowthattheConstitutionoftheMovements isnotbasedontheory,but onpracticalfactandexperiencegainedinfiftytwo othernationsoftheworld!

"Militant"speaksofthe successoftheathleticclubs "wheretherestrictionhas notbeenimposed."Iwould remindhimthattheathleticclubsareinstrumentsof theMovements,andassuch areunderthedirectcontroloftheirrespectiveDiocesanExecutivesthevery peoplewhomhehadcriticisedinanearlierpartof hisletter.Anditismuch easiertointerestsportmindedAustraliansinany sportthanitistogetthem toshareintheapostolic workoftheChurch.

Thisapostolicworkisthe primeobjectoftheMovements,yetsomeofyour correspondentsseemtohave ignoredthispointaltogetherAY.C.W.orN.C.G.M. leaderlearnsonethingvery

quicklyafterenteringthe Movement:-"Don'tlook forresultsofyourapostolic work."OnlyGodalonecan measurethepreciseeffect theYouthMovementsare havinginthisregard;but certainlytheyarehaving aneffect.

Asforfull-timeworkers, perhaps"Militant"mightbe interestedtolearnthatMiss ThelmaMurray,theDiocesansecretaryofthe N.C.G.M.,isafull-time memberofthestaffof D.I.S.C.A.AsfortheY.C.W desirableasitmaybethat wehaveafull-timesecretary,wemustfaceupto economicreality.Thefinancialdemandsonthepeople oftheArchdiocesearealreadygreat,andinviewof this,Ifeelthatthepresent set-upissatisfactory. Afull-timetypistandofficefacilitiesareprovided, andIfeelthatafull-time secretarywouldspendmuch ofhisdaydoingnothing. Themainactivitiesofthe secretary'sworkoccurin thenight.I,forone,donot feelinclinedtoimposeon theCatholicsoftheArchdioceseanymore.Butif "Militant"issincereinhis proposals,Iputittohim tocallameetingofinterestedpersonstothinkmore onhisidea'offinancialhelp totheMovements.

BadenPowell'smovement achieveinsevenyears?It took21yearstomakeits presencereallyfelt.Inthe shortspaceofsevenyears doesMr.O'Donnellknow thattheY.C.W.inPerthhas builtupthefinestathletic clubinAustralia,andeach Saturdaynight,alternately atSubiacoandHighgate, providesdancesofsuch classthattheyareattended bycapacitycrowdsandwill outdoanydancethatthe P.F.associationmaycareto organise.

Sir,-PaulO'Donnell'sremarksinlastweek's"Record"causemetotakeup thedefenceoftheDalys.

Havingneverbeen a memberoftheY.C.W.,I havenoaxetogrind,butas apersonalacquaintanceof theDalysandtheirrespec-tivefamiliesforabout20 years,theelucidationofa fewpointsmaypreventhim frommakingridiculouspersonalaccusationswhich havenofoundationinfact.

TheDalysarelearning atfirsthandhowtobring upchildren-havingtwo sons,agedtwoyearsand eightmonths.Astoeducatingtheseoffspring,I quitebelievetheirY.C.W. andN.C.G.M.trainingwas complementarytothatreceivedintrulyChristian homesinwhichbothwere reared.

Mr.O'Donnellrefersto whytheyouthmovements lacknumbers.Mr.O'DonnellforgetsthattheY.C.W. movementstartedinPerth sevenyearsago.What membershipandwhatdid

Inanycase,Ifailtosee howtwomovementssuchas theY.C.W.andtheBoy Scouts,sowidelydiversein theiraims,canpossiblybe compared.Whereasthe aimsoftheY.C.W.movementaretobringChristto theworkers,tochangetheir environmentandmakeall workersbetterChristians. theScoutmovementcaters onlyforthephysicalwellbeingofitsmembers,and catersonlyfortheirmoral welfareinasmuchasitconcernstheirphysicalfitness. Totheideaoforganising theY.C.W.liketheBoy Scouts,insteadofthepresentdayContinentalY.C.W. -wellIcanonlyquotePope PiusXI.,andhopeMr. O'Donnellwillseetheutter foolishnessofthishasty statement.PiusXI.said: "WehavedefinedCatholic Actioninamannerwhich isperfectlyinterpretedby theY.C.W."(September, 1929.) Again,Cardinal Pacelli,writingforPiusXl. in1935,wrotetoCanon Cardijn,ourBelgianfounder:"InhiseyestheY.C.W. providesaperfectexample ofthatCatholicAction whichisoneofthechief preoccupationsofhispontificate..."Itwouldseem

Thenwithregardtohelp fromadults-thatIwould suggest,wouldbevaluable inproportiontotheunderstandingonthepartofthe adultoftheworkofCatholicAction.Thishelpshould beforthcominginincreasing instancesasthepresent membersofthemovement reachmaturity.Thatsuch helpwouldbeacceptedis evidencedbythespeakers atthePre-Canaconferences andbythereportofthecombinedN.C.G.M.and Y.C.W.rallyheldinMay thisyear,whenMrs.T.Daly waslistedasoneofthe speakers.

WeagreewithMr.O'Donnellthatthesemovements haveshortcomings,but thesearenottheresultsof theirmethod.Theyarein partselfsupporting,andit is,ofcourse,desirablethat theyshouldbecompletelq so.However,wefeelstronglythattheirmethodscannotbechangedmerelyto bringthisabout.

Itisunfortunatethatin theschoolsCatholicAction hasnotbeengivenitsright place,butsurelythisisno faultoftheYouthmovements.Fromthoseschooll wherenowtheyoungCatholicStudents'movement isinoperation,wecanlook forwardtobetterresults.

Withregardtotheparochialworkandthemany otherworthycausesmentioned,weknowthatthe movementgraduatesare fulfillingtheirresponsibilities.

Inconclusion,wewould liketosaythatinouropinionmuchmisunderstanding wouldbeavoidedifthe Movementsusedthispaper moreinfurtheringtheirend -Yours,etc., M.andT.DALY.
