GodWillsAllMenToBeSaved, GivesGrace,ButForcesNoOne
DoesGodgiveallmenthe gracenecessaryforsalvation?
Sincesalvationisimpossiblewithoutgrace,and sinceGodwillsthesalvationofallmen,Hemust necessarilygivetoallmen thegracenecessaryforsalvation;otherwise God wouldnotbealljust.
Howcanitbeprovedthat Godwillsthesalvationof all?
ThewordsofScripture offerirre,f,utableproof.The BiblecontainsmanyinstancesofGod'smercytosinners:"AsIlive,saiththe LordGod,Idesirenotthe deathofthewickedbutthat thewickedturnfromhis wayandlive.Turnye, turnyefromyourevilways.
Thewickednessofthe wickedshallnothurthim, inwhatdaysoeverheshall turnfromhiswickedness.
IfIshallsaytothe wicked,'Thoushaltsurely die,'andhedopenancefor hissin,heshallsurelylive andnotdie.Noneofhis sinswhichhehadcommittedshallbeimputedto him"(Ez.xxxiii,11,12,1416).
Godgrantsthegraceof salvationeventotheinfidel.St.Pauldeclared:"I urge,therefore,firstofall thatsupplications,prayers, intercessions,andthanksgivingbemadeforallmen.
ThisisgoodandagreeableinthesightofGod OurSaviour,whowishes allmentobesavedandto cometotheknowledgeof thetruth"(I.Tim.ii,1.4).
Itfollowsclearlyfrom thesewordsthatGodwishes
allmentobesaved.But Hecouldnottrulyandsincerelywishthis ifHe shoulddenythegraceof salvationtoanyone.The conclusionisobviousthat Godgrantsthegraceofsalvationtoall. Thisisalsotheunshaken doctrineofTradition.The Fathersaffirm:Theblood shedbyChristaffordsthe graceofrepentanceforthe wholeworld(St.Clement ofRome):thefountain-of lifeisopentoall,andno onemaybeforbiddenor deprivedoftherightto drinktherefrom(Arnonbius).Christilluminated everyman,insofarasthis dependsonHim(St.John Chrysostom);andtherefore allmencan,iftheywill, turntowardthefulfilment oftheCommandmentsof God,andallwhoarenot deliveredbygracearejustly damned(St.Augustine).
Why,then,ifGodgrants thegraceforsalvationtoall men,arenotallmensaved?
Theanswerliesinthe freewillofmen.God damnsnoman;but.every personwhoislostdamns himself.Godoffersthe graceofsalvationtoall,but Hedoesnotforcethatgrace onanyone.Hehasgiven toeachindividualafree willwherebythatperson canfreelyacceptthegrace ofSalvationorhecanfreelyrejectthatgraceandsufferdamnation.Itisman, notGod,whomakesthe choice.
