Thegovernmentaction hasbeenprotestedagainst byBishopJamesListonof AucklandandHolyName Societyunitsthroughoutthe country,Meanwhile,representationshavebeenmade totheMinisterofEducation andtoallmembersofparliament,andattemptsare nowunderwaytohavethe issuediscussedinparliament.

Commentingontheissue, TheAucklandStar,aleadingdailynewspaper,gave strongsupporttotheCatholicprotests:Itsaid,editorially:

"TheCatholicorganizationswhichareprotesting againstthedirectionoffour Maorischolarshipwinners toanon-Catholicschool haveagrievancewhich oughttoberemedied. Indeed,itissurprisingthat itwasnotremediedwhenit wasfirstexpressed,and,in anyevent,beforethebeginningofthenewschoolyear.
