Thereareotherminorposts intheteachingstaffheldby Catholics,andtherewillbe morewhenCatholicstake theirproperandrightful placewithintheUniversity.

ThatoikChurch,the motherofsomanyseatsof learningintheoldlands, hasnotaresidentialcollegewithintheUniversity wasaregretwhichwould soonberemedied,said MonsignorMcMahon.

NoFoundingFather

AmongtheUniversityprofessorsatNedlandsthere wasafeelingthattheChurch wasnotveryinterestedin thegrowthandprogressof theUniversity.Theygranted CatholicsthehonourofhavingfoundedOxford,Paris, Bologna,Salerno,Salamanca andmanyothersinEurope, buttheythoughttheirinterestintheadvancementof learninghadendedthere.

UnfortunatelyCatholicshadnoonetorepresentthemamongstthefounding fathersofthelocalUniversity.Theyhadbeensoextendedfinanciallyand otherwise,thatwithprimary schoolsandshortageof prieststomeetthedemands ofthegoldrushtowns theycouldnotentertheUniversityfield.Allthatwas nowpast

OntheWednesdaypriortolastSunday,eighteenmen cametotheNedlandsPresbyteryattheinvitationf theRt.Rev.Mgr.E.Moss. MonsignorMcMahonspoke tothemofthenecessityof aCatholicchapelandcollegewithintheUniversity.Manyofthemenmadevaluablesuggestionsandallof themwereenthusiasticabout theproject.

Nedlands,ofcourseisthe Universityparishandisdeterminedtodoitspartin raisingfunds.Themenpresent(thereweremany apologies)formedthemselves intoacommitteewithMr. RegHopkinsaspresident, Mr.W.Davlez,assecretary andMr.Joseph.2olhertas treasurer.

Thecommitteehassetitselfanimmediatetargetof raisingL5000.Theirfirst meetingwasheldlastWednesdayinthepresbytery aftertheNovenadevotions

ArrivingfromSydneyonJune27,the VeryRev.Mgr.A.R.Thomas,nationaldirectorofthePontificalMissionAidsocieties, preachedatallthreeMassesatthechurch oftheRedemptoristFathers,NorthPerth, onJune29.

Thecentreoftheworld trouble,saidMonsignorThomas,appearedforthemost parttobeintheEast.Ifa straightlineweredrawn throughthecentreofAfrica, throughEgypt,Persia,North India,ChinaandKorea,it wouldalmostgoright throughthetroublespotsof theworld.

Thatlinealsowent throughthecentreofthe paganworld,whichmade thecauserealforthetrouble intheEastwasassociated withthestrugglebetween paganismandChristianity.

Paganismwastryingto evolvefromitselfanewway oflife;Christianitywastryingtogiveitafoundation forimitatingWesterncivilisationwhichtheEasthad triedtocopyoverthecenturies-

DuringhisstayMonsignorThomaswillvisitmanyof theschools,returningto Adelaidenextweek.

JohnChokolichhasarrived inAdelaideandwillremain thereuntilJuly8.

FatherChokolichwasborn inSinj,inDalmatia.In 1924hisuncle,whohad settledonthelandatWanneroo,arrangedforyoung JohnChokolichtocometo Australia.Theothermembersofhisfamily,his parents,threebrothersand twosisters,remainedinDalmatia,butoneofhissisters hasmigratedtoAustralia thisyear.

Fr.Chokolichgrewupin WesternAustralia,wherehe waseducatedbytheSisters ofMercyandtheChristian Brothers.Whenheexpressedadesiretostudyforthe priesthood, arrangements weremadeforhimtotravel toRome,andin1936hebecameastudentatPropagandacollege,wherehe livedforthenexteight years.

In1939Fr.Chokolichtook advantageofanopportunity tovisithisparentsinhis homeland,buttheoutbreak ofwarmadesubsequentvisitsmoredifficult.In'941 hewasordainedtothe

Duringhiswarservice,Fr. Chokolichwasstationedat Algiers,andsawservice throughouttheMiddleEast andmadeseveralvisitsto theislandofViswhichis adjacenttotheDalmatian coast.

Afterthecapitulationof theGermansFr.Chpkolich paidseveralvisitstoR.A.F. stagingpostsinYugoslavia toassisttheCatholicBritish personnel.butonaccountof thepost-warregimewasunabletovisithisparents.

In1946Fr.ChokolichreturnedtoAustralia,and sincethenhasdevoteda gooddealofhistimetothe assistanceofSlavpeople andinparticulartheCroatians.

Hehasbeenstationedat OsborneParkandMidland Junction,andin1949he wasappointedparishpriest ofSpearwood-aparishnear Fremantle.whosepopulationisalmostequallydividedbetweenBritishnationals andItalianandSlavmigrants.

Perhapsoneofthereasonswhyweprefervisions andrevelationsisthatthey canbeabsorbedquitepassively,withouttheeffortof thought?Whereasifthe Scripturesandthedoctrines oftheChurcharetoreveal theirbeautywemustbeactiveourselves,thinkabout themandtrytointegrate themintoourlives,Wehave tousethehighestpowersof oursoul,ourmindtounderstand,ourwilltoputthe teachingoftheseintopracticewithoutwhichatruly spirituallifecannotbe lived.

Thelivesofthesaints, theirvirtuesandsufferings, theirmysticunionwith God,areindeedaninspirationtous;butthepious imaginingsandstrange psychologicalstatesso oftenpresentedas"mysticism"shouldbecarefully scrutinised.

Thoseofuswhonegletctthistruthmayhaveto payforitinthehere-after,inaccordancewithour guilt.Themostimportantthinginlife,foreverybody,istosaveoursouls.andtoseethatasmany othersaspossiblearesaved.Forthepriesthood,as anexample.thesignsofaninternalvocationarea rightintention.bywhichonedesirestoadoptthis stateofhisownaccord,notfrom,merelyhuman considerationsnoroutofrespectforhisparents' wishes;andfitness.suchas.thepossessionofsufficientknowledgeandability,giftsofgracesuchas arereflectedinaholyandapprovedlife,andawellfoundedhopethatthecandidatewillproperlyperformhisdutiesandobservehisobligations.

MUNICH,June13(NC.)-An Americanpriest,whohasjustvisitedYugoslaviaandsawArchbishopAloyiiusStepinac,foundthatcountry'sregimeascommunisticasthatofanySoviet-controlled state.

TheRev.JosephB.KonciusofYonkers,N.Y.,who duringthistourofYugoslaviaobservedthecomplete lackofreligiousfreedom there,expressedwonderment whytheUnitedStatesGovernmentisgivingaidtothe Titoregimewithoutdemandingaguarantyofhuman rights,includingfreedomof religion,fortheYugoslav people.

FatherKoncius,whois presidentoftheUnited LithuanianReliefFundof America,heardfromArchbishopStepinacthat,confinedasheistohisnativevillageofKrasic,hehashardly morefreedomtherethanhe hadwhileinprison.

"Itistrue,IcansayMass andpreachinchurch,butI wasabletosayMassinthe Stateprison,too,"Father KonciusquotedtheArchbishopassaying.

ReadyforSacrifice

TheAmericanpriestfound ArchbishopStepinac"depressed"overhisinabilityto performhisecclesiastical functionsfromwhichhe hasbeenarbitrarilybarred bytheYugoslavGovernment.TheArchbishopreemphasisedthatonlythe Popehimself,ifhesodesires,canreleasehimfrom theseduties.

AccordingtoFatherKoncius,ArchbishopStepinac expressedhisdetermination nottoaskanyfavoursfrom theYugoslavregime.He voicedhisresolutiontomake anysacrificeindefenceof religionandinupholdingthe rightsandthefreedomof theChurch.TheAmerican priestwasinformedthat,accordingtotheordersofthe Titoregime,theconfinementofArchbishopStepinac atKrasicwilllastuntil1962

ArbitraryTaxation

FatherKonciusdescribed theattemptsoftheBelgrade regimetotaxthechurches outofexistence."Lastyear," hesaid,"theparishchurch atKrasicwasassessedatax of20,000dinari(about£35 attheofficialrateofexchange).Thisyear,thetax assessmentsamountsto280,000dinari(morethan£450) asumwhichthatpoor

parishobviouslycannot raise.Nobodyknowswhat isgoingtohappentothe Parishpriestandhischurch.

Allchurches,Catholicas wellasothers,areforcedto handoverbetween40and 70percent.oftheircollectionstotheGovernment FatherKonciussaid..Quiteoftenthetaxofficials,disregardingthedeclarationsfiled bythepastors,imposetaxes Muchhigherthantheentirecollections.

RepressiveActivity

(1)Religiousinstruction tochildrenisonlyallowed inchurchduringMass.Any priestwhodisobeysGoverntalordersandteachesreligiontochildrenprivately,or beforeorafterMass,isimmediatelyimprisoned.

(2)Thenumberofstudentsinthethreestillexistingseminariesisrapidly decreasing.Acouple,both ofthemschoolteachers, wereorderedbytheGovernmenttowithdrawtheirtwo sonsfromtheseminaryim- mediately,orbedismissed fromtheirteachingjobs. Afterthisdemandhadbeen compliedwith,theparents wereforbiddentogoto church.Whentheyrefused bothlosttheirpositions.

(3)Governmentofficials attendingreligiousservices areimmediatelysuspectand manyofthemhavebeendismissed.

(4)Thearrestsofpersons, bothpriestsandlaity,suspectedofbeinghostiletothe regimecontinueingreat numbers.Manyseekfor waysandmeanstoescape fromtotalitarianruleto Austria.ItalyorGermany.

(5)Whilepersonallyunmolestedinhistravels throughYugoslavia,Father Konciusfounditpracticallyimpossibletovisitcertainpriestsorfamilies. Peopleingeneralareafraid ofcomingintocontactwith foreigners.lesttheybeaccusedof"spying"fora foreigncountry.

(6)ThevillageofKrasic isunder24-hourpolice watch,Thosedesiringto seeArchbishopStepinac mustpresenttheiridentificationcardstothepolice posts.FatherKonciuswho wenttoKrasicinanAmericanEmbassycaraccompaniedbyanAmericanconsularofficial,wasnothimselfmolested.

RegardinggeneraleconomicconditionsinYugoslavia,FatherKonciuscommentedonthepovertyhe noticedeverywhereandon thehighcostofliving.For instance,theaverageprice ofasuitisaboutequalto athree-monththeextraordinarilyhighcostincome. For

TheHomeSecretary,Sir DavidMaxwellFyfe,refused arequestbyaCatholic MemberofParliamentfrom NorthernIreland,tointroducelegislationtorepeal theEcclesiasticalTitlesAct of1870,whichdenieslegal standingtoCatholicecclesisticaltitles,beforethe coronationofQueenElizabethIInextyear.
