Inthesecondandthird quarters,ShentonParkdid alltheattacking,butwith theirforwardscrowdipg eachother,theydidnot scoreasheavilyasthey shouldhave.
Cathedralmadeagame fightbackinthelastquarter.Theirruckmenbegan toshowout,andwiththeir forwardsleadingwellthey putontwoquickgoals. ShentonParkansweredthe challengehowever,andran outcomfortablewinners. Notetoo,'the Church'scareforthepoor andafflictedwhichhasbeen adistinguishingmarkofher activityineverycentury, andforwhichshehasbeen praisedbyhervery enemies.
Inthismatterofrelief andassistanceitshouldbe remarkedthatnohuman expedientsorhumanlaws -helpfulastheymaybewillevermakeupforthe devotednessandselfsacrificeofChristiancharity.
Charityrightlybeginsat home:thereforeitshouldbe verymuchinevidencein one'sfamilycircleand amongthosewhoareofthe householdoftheFaith.But itmustalsobeextendedto allmen,forsoGodwishes.

Receivingitsfirstperformanceherewas"Rhapsody Mosaic"byAustralianClive Douglas.Describedinthe programme"asymphonic inlayofvariouspatterns"it seemedtomethatthere weretoomanypatternsand thatthesehardlyfitted togetherasthepatternsof amosaicshould.Inoticed too,aremarkablesimilarity betweenoneofthethemes inthisRhapsodyanda themeinanothercontemporaryworkheardina recentconcert.Although themusicseemedattimes disjointed(whichmaynot havebeenentirelydueto theorchestra)forthemost parttheorchestraplayed verywell.
TheOverturewas"Colas Breugnon"fromKabalevsky'sOpera"TheMasterof Clemency".Theorchestra enteredwholeheartedlyinto theprevailingmoodof lightheartedgaietyandgave anenjoyableperformance.
Therewasmagnificient playingfromallsectionsin theSibeliusSymphony No.1.Theplayersgaveus heartstirringmelodies,delightfulrhythmanddramaticclimaxes.
Thesecondhalfofthe programmeopenedwith Mozart'sViolinconcerto No.5.WhileMr.PaulMcDermot'splayingwasnot reallyoutstanding,norhis techniqueentirelyfaultless, heyetgaveagracefulrenditionofthisconcerto,and histonewasparticularly sweet.
Itwasfollowingthisthat weheardthethreedances ofKhachaturian's"Gayaneh"Suite.Allthree,the Orchestraplayedwithevidentenjoyment,butthis wasespeciallysoofthe thirdone,theSabreDance, whichwassowellreceived bytheaudience,thatSir. Bernardaskedtheplayers torepeatit,somethingthey werenotatalllothtodo. M.K.

Involvedinthecasewere
ThetwoRomedailies, "L'Unita'"and"IlPaese", and"NoiDonne",awoman's magazine,allcommunist organs,and"L'Avanti",socialistnewspaper.TheRota, whichhandlesappealsfrom diocesancourtsinmatrimonialcases,hadcomplained thatarticlesappearedinthe publicationsallegingthat "annulments"couldbe "bought"bythosewith enoughmoney.
Foureditorsandwriters, twoofthemwomen,were foundguiltybythecourt andeachfinedtheequivalentof£75andcosts.At thesametime,thecourt orderedthedefendantsto printretractions their ownnewspapersandintwo prominentseculardailies "IIMessaggero"ofRome, and"CorrieredellaSera", ofMilan.
Thecaseoriginatedin May,1949,whentheRota broughtsuitafter'L'Unita" and"IIPaese"printedarticlesstatingthatannulmentsofmarriagecouldbe "bought"fromit.Subsequently,"L'Avanti"and "NoiDonne"madesimilar charges,andtheRota broughtsuitagainstthem also.

Thatthecrisisoffood productionrankswiththe internationalandindustrial crisesasaforcedestructive tothenationalfabric,in viewoftheimportanceof foodproductioninrelation todomesticcomsumption,in relationtoournationalsolvency,andaboveall,inrelationtoourresponsibilities totheIbungrymillionsinall partsoftheworld,whoare ourbrothersinChristand entitledtosocialjusticeand toChristiancharity, NoFalseEconomy
Thecrisisoffoodproductionisnotessentiallydueto highwoolpricesortothe policyofgeneralhighagriculturalprices.Coerciveof confiscatorymeasureswill notbeaprimefactorin achievingasolutionofthe crisis,althoughincertain areasresumptionofland)ri justtermsisdesirableand necessary.
Infact,thesolutionofthe ruralcrisisdemandsanallembracingapproach:the marketingoffoodatits truevalue,taxationpolicies designedtocreateincentivestoproduce,ruralhousingpolicies,closersettlement,soundfarmingtechniques,newtariffand importpoliciesandothermeasures-allaspectsofa policydesignedtoendthe over-industrialisationof Australiawhichisamajor causeofinflation,poverty, unemploymentandinsecurity.
ThisConferencerecognisesthattheworldismoving intoaneraofgreatscarcity ofbasicfoodstuffsandkey rawmaterials,duetothe rapidincreaseofworldpopulation,totheexhaustion ofeasily-obtainedbasicmaterialsandthediminishing returnsofmechanisation. Thiseracanbeoneofgreat prosperityforprimary'producingcountrieslike Australiaifartificialpolicies donotdrivetheeconomy intofalsechannelsofdevelopment.
ExpandProduction
Theproperchannelsof developmentareintheproductionofwheatandother feedgrains,tobacco,cotton, sugar,livestockproducts andthosebasicindustriescoal,stell,transport-which areancillarytofoodproduction.
Atthe12thNationalConferenceofthe CatholicRuralMovementheldlastmonth delegatesdiscussedthefoodcrisis.Asa consequence,thefollowingdynamicstatementwasissued. theirfinancialandtechnical possibilities.
Theinevitableexpansion ofprimaryproductionconfrontsthelandwithnew opportunitiesandalsowith newdangers.Itwouldbea retrogradestepiftheagriculturalprogrammesnow beingfashionedwereto encouragepoliciesofonecropfarmingwhichinthe pasthaveprovedsodestructivetothenation'ssoil. Thealternativetodiversifiedfarmingisthenational disasterofsoilerosion.
SnowyRiverFirst
Weplaceonrecordthe indisputablefactthatin manypartsofAustralia therearelargeareasofproductivelandwhichhaveyet tobebroughtintoproduction.Therapidsettlement oftheseagriculturalareas isessentialiftheeconomy istofunctionasitshould. Inviewoftherapidlydeterioratingfinancialsituationitisnaturalthatthose areasshouldfirstbebrought intoproductionwhichare alreadyservedbyports, harboursandallformsof transport.
Thedevelopmentofareas notservedinthismanner mustinmanycasesawait theaccumulationofnational capitalfromthereturnsof landsoftheformercategory.Ofthelimitednumber ofmajordevelopmental workswhichshouldproceed atthepresentmoment,the SnowyRiverProjectisfirst inurgencyandimportance.
WorkingOwners
Weregisteramostemphaticprotestagainstthe growingpropagandahostile tothecontinuationofthe migrationprogramme.If anyalterationisneeded,it isanaccelerationrather thanareductioninthemomentumoftheplan.Itgoes withoutsayingthatthemistakenpoliciesofthepast years,whichcompletely ignoredthevitalneedsof agriculture,shouldbeended onceandforall. Thereisnoforeseeable limittothenumberof migrantsAustraliacan absorbkprovidedtheyare destinedfortheland.Such apolicyisnotcompatible withracialdiscrimination.

Thisinvolvestheorganisa-tionandtherecognitionby Governmentsofco-operative settlementsocietiesofnative-bornAustraliansand migrants,thegrantofsuitableareasbytheStates andfinancialguaranteesfor theco-operativesbyjoint Commonwealth-Stateaction
TheGovernmentsconcernedarenaturallyentitled tomaintainasafe,butnot bureaucratic,supervisionof theusetowhichtheirassetsareplaced.Therest shouldbelefttothevoluntaryeffortoftheorganisedsettlers-native-bornAustraliansandmigrantsalike-whowouldbeexpectedto participatetothefullinthe initialworkofclearingand development,
Decentralisation
Theproblemofcreating aseasonallabourforcecan bestbemetbytheactivity ofStateHousingCommissions'andprivateinterests inbuildinghomesforthe ruralworkers,eachona smallacreageoflandin conveniently-situatedfarmingcentres.Thesehomestead farmswouldattheone timeprovidesecurityfor seasonalworkersandactas thefirststeponthefarming ladder.
Norealprogresswillbe madeonthelineshereenvisagedifStateGovernmentsdonotfaceuptothe nationaldiseaseofthecentralisationofpopulationin thecapitalcities.Measures alreadyadoptedtodealwith thisproblemarelargely
palliatives.Theessentialsof suchaprogrammedemand at.least:
(a)thereversalofthe programmeofStateHousing Commissionswherebyby farthegreaterproportionof homesconstructedsince WorldWar11havebeen erectedincityareas.
(b)Theimplementation inAustraliaofthoserecommendationsoftheEnglish BarlowandUtwhatRoyal Commissionswhichdemandedanabsolutebanon anyfactorybuildingwhatsoeverintownsabovea certainsize.
(c)Therevisionofany decisiontakentofeedpower fromtheSnowyproject intothenationalgrid.The technicalorthodoxyunderlyingsuchadecisioncannotdisguisethefactthat thepowerwouldonlybe swallowedbyMelbourne andSydney,andtheonly effectivelimitationontheir growth-lackofindustrial power-wouldbeeliminated.

Sincehisearliestdayshe waspreoccupiedwiththe BlessedVirginMaryand withthedesiretobea priestintheOrderofServantsofMary,buthis parentswereviolentlyopposedtotheirson'sbecominga"Prate."Itwasthe localparishpriest,DonLuigi whoencouragedtheboyand gavehimhisfirstlessonsin ecclesiasticalstudy.

Inordertorealisehis greatambitionofjoiningthe ServantsofMary,theyoung boyprayedfrequentlybeforethedilapidatedstatue ofOurLadyintheparish church,andwheneverhe couldgetanafternoonoff fromthehardchoresofthe farmhewouldwalkinpilgrimagetotheshrineofOur LadyatBocca.OntheFeast oftheAssumption,inthe year1837,afterhavingreceivedHolyCommunionat HolyMassinthemorning, youngPucciwentonfoot theSanctuaryofOurLady tobegHeragaintosoften -theheartofhisdetermined father.
Attheexactmomentthat hewasprayinginOur Lady'sshrine,theparish priestwentouttothelittle farmandhadabattleroyal withthefather.Afterabitterargumentofmorethan twohours,suddenlyandunexpectedlytheelderPucci gavein.Thiswasdue,we nowbelieve,toOurLady's answertotheferventprayer Dftheyoungmaninpil2.TimagetoHershrine.
AfewdayslaterheenteredtheServitePrioryofthe AnnunziatainFlorence.He receivedtheblackhabiton December23.1837,atthe ageof18years,andwasordainedtothesacredpriesthoodontheOctavedayof TheSolemnityoftheSeven Dolours,September24,1843.

InAugust,1844,hewas senttotheServiteparish ofSt.AndrewinViareggio, aseasideresort,toassistthe parishpriest.Threeyears later,attheageof28,he oecametheparishpriest, andfromthenuntilhedied
Ven.AnthonyPucci.O.S.M. -45yearslater-hepassed hisentirelifeinthatoffice. Evenwhenhewaselected ProvincialoftheTuscan ServiteProvinceforone termofthreeyearsheretainedthepastorateofSt. Andrew's(anunheard-of thingforaProvincialtodo) andsetupatemporaryProvincial'sofficeinthesmall PrioryatViareggio.

Throughoutthelength and.breadthofTuscanyBl Anthonyisknownas"The Curatino,"anItalianword whichhasnoexactequivalentinEnglish.Itisanaffectionatetermmeaning, moreorless,"thelittle parishpriest."Thiswasprovokedbythesmallstature oftheman,plus great lovewhicheveryonefelt forhim.Itwasquite'the thingforeverybodytojoke withhimabouthisserious, evenuglyface.Theytried totakepicturesofhim,but healwaysavoidedit.
Onebiographerwrites: "Hewascertainlynothandsome-untilyoulookedinto hismagnificenteyes;then Youseemedtoseethevery HeartofGodintheirmeditativedepths."Theonly photographevertakenofBl. Anthonywasinagroupof Svitesattendingthe CanonizationoftheSeven HolyFounders0S.M.in Romein1888.Itisreproducedonthispage.

Lucca,andwasconsiderably inadvanceofhisdayinthe matterofsocialservice.His "MarineNursingHomefor Children"wasthefirstof itskindinItaly,andmany citiesandtownssetupsimilarprojectsaccordingtothe plansandmaintenancesetupofBl.Anthony.
Hischaracteristics,inthe orderoftheirpriority,would be:(1)Histirelessnessin teachingcatechismtoboth childrenandadults;(2)His preoccupationwiththefinancialdifficultiesofthepoor ofhisparish;and(3)His devotiontoOurLadyof Sorrows.
Itisquitecertainthathe averagedaboutsixhours eachdayinteachingcathechismHewouldgooutinto "thehighwaysandby-ways" andbringallthechildren intochurchtoteachthem theircatechism.Ifanyescapedhim,hewouldseek themoutintheirhomes,sit downonaboxandteach themcatechismforanhour. Andthesamewasdonewith adults.Itwasnotuncommontofindhimstanding upinthepublicsquare,with agreatcrowdofmenabout him,discussingthetruthsof ourFaith.Andhenever saidMassinhischurch, Sundayorweek-day,withoutgivingacatecheticalinstructiontothosepresent.
