Two-MileTriumph
Theroutetothechurch coverednearlytwomiles. Thesidewalksalongthe waywerejammedwith spectatorswhodoffedhats, threwflowers,andwaved handkerchiefsastheprocessionpassed.Itwasalreadybeginningtogetdark whenthecortegestopped outsidethedoorsofthe ancientbasilica.

hadonlyjustarrivedin Barcelona.Groupedaround thehighaltarweremembers ofthe AdorationSpanishNocturnal Society,whoalternatelyrecitedprayers andobservedperiodsof devoutmeditation. Meanwhile,crowdsof pilgrimshadbeguntoscale theslopesoftheTibidabo forthemidnightvigil.Most ofthemrodeonthefunicularrailroad,whichcarried 400passengersevery12 minutes.Amongthemwere 300NocturaAdoration members,allworkersfrom Guipuzcoawhocameto Barcelonain20trucksloanedbythefactorieswhere theyworked.Eachhadcarriedwithhimaknapsack filledwithfoodandpersonal effectsforthefour-daystay inthecity.
