Barcelona,Spain,May27.-Demonstrationsunparalleled inthehistoryofthisbustlingMediterraneanportmarkedthearrivalherefromGenoaofHisEminenceFedericoCardinalTedeschinitoopenthe35th.InternationalEuchoristicCongress-the firstworld-widedemonstrationofCatholicdevotiontotheBlessedSacramentsincetheCongressatBudapestin1938.

NamedasPapalLegate totheCongressbyHisHolinessPopePiusXII,who broadcastaspecialmessagetothemorethan 500,000pilgrimsgathered herefromallpartsofthe world,CardinalTedeschini wasaccordedStatehonours usuallyreservedtoroyalty astheboatbearinghimand hisretinueapproachedthe greatesplanadeoverwhich towersanimposingstatue ofChristopherColumbus.

Asthousandsofpilgrims raisedshoutsofwelcome fromeveryvantagepointof theesplanade,canonson theheightofCastillode Montjuichroaredoutinsalvoesofgreeting,church bellspealedandsirensand boatwhistlesrentthewarm Springair.Meanwhileaeroplanesflyinghighoverhead dippedandturnedintribute tothe76-year-oldCardinal whosehandwasseenraised inbenedictionasthevessel bearinghimnearedthe landingstage.

NobleandAffable Liningthebayashisboat approachedweregreat ocean-goingliners,sailboats, motorboatsandyachtsbelongingtothevariousnauticalclubsofthecity.Intermingledwiththeflagsof Spainandofmanyforeign State.Addingtothisriotof colourandjoywerethe

nationswerethewhiteand goldcoloursoftheVatican bannersandemblemsdeckingthewindowsofbuildingsinthevicinityofthe port.

OnhandtogreetCardinal TedeschiniwereBishop GregorioModregoofBarcelona,whoextendedawelcomeonbehalfoftheCatholicsofSpain.Othersinthe welcomingpartywereDon AntonioMariaSumarro, mayorofBarcelona;CaptainGeneralDonJuanBautistaSanchez;andmany membersoftheorganizing committeeoftheCongress.

Silencehaddescended uponthemultitudeasthe Cardinal,amanofnoble bearingandaffablemanner, stoodwithhisretinueto receivetheofficialwelcome. Butastheguardofhonour aroundtheLegatebeganto movetowardthemajesticandancientBarcelonaBasilicafortheopeningritesof theCongress,ahubbubof voicesaroseandpeoplein thecrowdstrainedfora closelookattheCardinal.

Two-MileTriumph

Theroutetothechurch coverednearlytwomiles. Thesidewalksalongthe waywerejammedwith spectatorswhodoffedhats, threwflowers,andwaved handkerchiefsastheprocessionpassed.Itwasalreadybeginningtogetdark whenthecortegestopped outsidethedoorsofthe ancientbasilica.

BishopModrego,whohad takenashorterroutetothe basilica,wasagainonhand togreettheLegateand escorthimintotheedifice wherethe2,500seatshad alreadybeenoccupiedby Church,Stateandmilitary personagesandmanyother prominentindividualsto whomspecialinvitations hadbeenextended.Inthe gatheringwereadozenCardinals,about30Archbishops andBishopsandnumerous monsignoriandpriests.The

Bishopsandclergywereaccommodatedinrowsaround thesanctuary,whileinfront ofandbetweenthealtar andthecanons'choirwas aspecialplatformforthe Cardinals,themostimportantcityofficialsandthe mostdistinguishedvisitors. Immediatelythechoir beganthesingingofthe EcceSacerdosMagnus,followedbytheVeniCreator astheLegatewasescorted tohisthroneontheright sideofthealtar.

Nextcamethereadingof thePapalBullappointing

CardinalTedeschiniasPapal LegatetotheCongress.It wasreadfirstinLatinand theninSpanish.Whenthe readingwas Modregofinished,Bishop deliveredtheaddressofwelcome.Stressing thatman'struehopefor peaceliesintheEucharist, hesaidtheCongresswas beingheldinaspiritof hopeforthehappinessof Spainandoftheworld.

NexttospeakwasArchbishopAlexanderVachon ofOttawa,Canada,presidentofthePermanentCommitteeofInternationalEuch-

aristicCongresses,whodescribedtheBarcelonaevent asanotherlinkinthechain ofInternationalEucharistic Congressesbegun70years ago.Hesaidthecurrent celebrationswerebeingheld atatimethatwasfullof dangerforthewell-beingof theworld,butatthesame timeheldoutpromisesof peacethroughincreased devotiontotheEucharistic Presence.

CardinalTedeschinirose attheconclusionofArchbishopVachon'saddressto expresshisjoyincomingto Stainforaneventwhich wasoftrulyuniversalsignificance.Hesaidthatthe world'sgreatneedwasfor arenewalofsoulsinChrist, whichwouldbeaprelude tothesocialpeaceinfamilies,andamongpeoplesand nations.Theentireceremo-

niesinthebasilicawere heardthroughloudspeakers setupatstrategicpoints throughoutthecity.

Withtheterminationof theceremonyofreception, andthedepartureofthe Legate,CardinalsandBishops,thedoorsofthebasilica werethrownopenforhuge throngsthatkeptpouringin forExpositionoftheBlessedSacrament.Notonlyin thebasilica,butalsointhe ExpiatoryChurchofthe SacredHeartatMountTibidabo,theHostremained exposedallthroughthe Congress.

InthebasilicaaNight Watchwasheld,duringthe firsthourofwhichasermon waspreachedbyArchbishop AntonioGarciayGarciaof Valladolid.Throughoutthe night,pilgrimscameand went,manyofthemwho

hadonlyjustarrivedin Barcelona.Groupedaround thehighaltarweremembers ofthe AdorationSpanishNocturnal Society,whoalternatelyrecitedprayers andobservedperiodsof devoutmeditation. Meanwhile,crowdsof pilgrimshadbeguntoscale theslopesoftheTibidabo forthemidnightvigil.Most ofthemrodeonthefunicularrailroad,whichcarried 400passengersevery12 minutes.Amongthemwere 300NocturaAdoration members,allworkersfrom Guipuzcoawhocameto Barcelonain20trucksloanedbythefactorieswhere theyworked.Eachhadcarriedwithhimaknapsack filledwithfoodandpersonal effectsforthefour-daystay inthecity.

ThusbeganthefirstdayofthegreatCongress.Atop theTibidabostoodagigan- ticcrossilluminatedby floodlightsandvisibletoall -asymbolofman'sfaith andtrustintheEucharistic Lord.

Forthispurpose,thesup- erior-generaloftheCongre-gationsentouttheHammerswithmistressofnovices,MotherAlphonsusJoseph(Kelly).Shearrived inMelbourneonApril27, accompaniedbythesuper- ioroftheCamberwell house,MotherColumbanus, andtwonovices.
