OnApril30,atSydney,theNotionalEpiscopalCommittee forMissionsmetforitsannualmeeting.IntheabsenceofHis Eminence,presidentofthecommittee,HisGraceArchbishop McGuirepresided.OthermemberspresentwereHisGraceDr. Duhig,HisGraceDr.Beovich,HisGraceDr.Simonds,HisLordshipBishopGleeson,andHisLordshipBishopGummer.

ThemeetingreceivedtheThissocietyreportedThereportcloseswitha reportoftheNationalDirec-anothergainof£3,950.In tor.Thereportwasahappyachildren'sworkdealingin oneasitindicatedapheno-smallmoneythisisaphemenalgrowthofMissionnomenalincrease. Aidduring1951.

InthethreePontificalsocieties1951sawanincrease of£17,448.In1950thesocietiesjustbarelyreacheda grossof£100,000;in1951 itwas£120,404.Moreover itwasasteadyandwidespreadgrowth.

Foroncealmostevery dioceseoftheCommonwealthshowedanincrease anditwasnotpermedium oflargebequests.Bequests sellawayby£4,000during 1951.

ThePropagationofthe Faith,themainmission society,showedamarked advancein1951:In1950revenuefromallsourcestotalled£73,409;in1951itrose to£85,606,anincreaseof £12,196.

Thepleasantreadingof largegainsandincreasesis thendisturbedbytheanalysiswhichfollows.The percapitacontributionincludingrevenuefromall sourceswas18.6d.per person.Itispointedout thatthisisnotevenamembershipatthelowestrate.

Later,dealingwithmemberships,thereportpoints putthatonly54.2%ofthe adultpopulationarememberscalculatedonthelowestrate;whilstifallowanceismadeforthehigher formsofmembershipjust 37%aremembers.

Thereportpleadsfor uniformmembershipcampaignsbythediocesandirectors.Thismustsupplant theoldpromotersystem whichisnotreadilyaccommodatedtomodernneeds andconditions.

Thereportseekstoclarify thepositionofMission Sunday.Thecampaignfor membership,northefactoZ membershipdoesnotdestroy MissionSunday.Inthe mindofthePopes(Vide PiusXI,PiusXII)thiswas tobeanextradayofcharitableappealforallmissions.

'TheSocietyofSt.Peter Apostletoassisttheworkof traininganativeclergyalso featuredanincreaseof £1,899but1951wasnot itshighestyearonrecord. Underthebursesystem whichbrokedownduring thewaryearsitflourished considerably.Thismaybe revived.

newfeaturecarriedoutby theNationalOfficeofAustralia.Raisingmoneyfor missionsisthedirectpurposeofthePontificalMissionWorks.In1950,however,thenationaloffice inAustraliafeltthatit mightbeabletoassistmissions,especiallyinthePacificingettingbettervalue fortheirmoney.Itintroducedco-operativemissionbuying.Sincethentheproject hasbeentakenupelsewhere andlastyearU.S.A.helda

meetingtoadoptthisand otherkindredprojects.

Thesecondportionofthe meetingwasengagedupon thedistributionofallocationstomissionaryworks withinAustralia.Not enoughisunderstoodabout thispartofthePropagation oftheFaithinAustralia.Of courseitwillberememberedthatintheveryearly daystheChurchinAustraliawasbuiltbythePropagationoftheFaithfunds fromRome. AsAustraliabecamemore settledthegrantsdwindled andgrewlessinnumber. In1919,followingtheupsetsofWorldWarI,there wasasmallscalemigration plan.ItcreatednewproblemsfortheChurchinAustralia.Ratherthanapprove ofmultiplefundstheCon-

gregationofPropaganda suggestedthatportionofthe AustralianPropagationof theFaithfundsbeusedfor thispurpose.

Itwasalsoaddedthat insteadofthemissionary diocesesdrawinghelpfrom Rometheytoocouldbe helpedfromthisportion. FromthenceonwardsAustraliahasretainedthisone third.Untiljustafewyears agoitwastheonlycountry oftheworldwherethisconcessionheld.In1945New Zealandreceivedthesame favourfortheMaorimissionsandmissionworks withinthedominion.

TheAustralianonethird isallocatedbyaCommittee ofAustralianBishopsaccordingtothevaryingneeds ofthemissionaryworks. Withinthelifetimeofthe

privilegeithasneverhap- penedthattheamountavailablehasevercoveredthe requests.Thisyearthe requestsweremorethan doubletheamountavailable. Thisis Australiaanotherreasonwhy shouldremember itsPropagationoftheFaith fund.

ItsmembershipissimplebuteveryCatholicadult shouldbeamember.In thesedayswhenthebasic wageishigh,itissurely clearthatthelowestformof membershipisout.2/2is surelynottheappreciation ofCatholicMissionsfroman incomeof£570perannum. IntheearlyhoursofMay18,theearthlycareerofSisterM.BerchmansO'Mahony, anexemplarymemberoftheorderofthe SistersofMercy,Bunbury,wasbroughttoa closeinthelocalhospitaloftheSistersofSt. JohnofGodafter54yearsintheserviceof Catholiceducation.

LeavingIrelandinOctober,1898,shefacedwhat wasthenalongandperilousvoyagetofar-distant Australiaandarrivedat Bunburyconvent-which wasatthattimeasmall buildingcomparedwiththe imposingstructureoftoday.

In1921shewassentout asapioneertothenewlyopenedconventatDardanup.Duringhertermthere sheshowedsignsofthatcapacityforhardworkand unswervingfidelitytodutywhichwerethehighlightsof hercharacter.Shealso servedforatimeinBridgetown,GreenbushesandDonnybrook,respectively.

Duringthe54yearsof herreligiouslifeinthe schoolsoftheSouth-West, SisterBerchmanswasnoted forhergenerousmissionary
