Uptill1944,theSeminarywasguardedby anoldfaithfulbulldog, "Oily."Unfortunately,however,"Oily"passedawayin thisyear,presumablyofold age.OntheeveofSaint Charles'feastday(Nov.3), apup,approximatelyseven monthsold,wasbroughtto theSeminary.Naturally, hewasnamed"Charlie." ThusSaintCharleslooked afterourspiritualneeds, whilst"Charlie"guarded theSeminarymaterially, worthilycarryingonthe workofold"Oily."

However,"Charlie,"asne grewolder,becamemore andomreoutofhandand developedbadhabits.The fowlsbegantodiminish graduallyfornoapparent reason,andfinallytheculminatingpointwasreached, whenhebegantobiteinnocentvisitors.Attheend of1951,hewasdisposedof quietly,onaccountofthese offences. Thehonorary positionof"SeminaryDog" isnowtilledby"Sue,"a thoroughbred,andaworthy memberofthe"Kennel club:'inwhomweplace ourconfidence,toguardus fromunworthyvisitors.-L. Baccini.

Recentlywehavebeen verysorrytoseetheSisters ofSt.JohnofGodleavethe Seminary,aftertenyears ofgenerousservice.AlthoughtheindividualSic-

terswere periodically changed,themarvellous spiritoftheirOrdercontinuedwithinthesucceedingcommunities,evercaringfortheboysinsickness, andinpreservingtheir healthandgoodspirits.God alonecanrepaythemfor thegreatservicetheyhave done.-K.Smith.

AndSistersCome

Italianhasbecomethe mostpopularlanguagein theSeminarysincetherefugeeUrsulineSistersof theSacredHearthavetakenover.TheywereexpelledfromChinabythe Communistsandcanspeak Italian,French,andChinese.However,theyare graduallylearningEnglish. OneoftheSisterswasvery pleasedwithherselfwhen shecouldsay"Goodmorning."Thetroublewas,however,sheinsistedonsaying itatalltimesofthedaymorning,afternoon,and evening.

SisterAgathaisparticularlywellknowntothe Communistsforherphotographwasshownonposters ashavingmurderedChinesebabies.Someofthe SisterswereinChinafor periodsofupto27years.It isappropriatethattheSistersshouldcometothis Seminary,fortwoofthem wereborninMilan-the birthplaceofSt.Charles Borromeo.Keeninterest hasbeenshowninthehabit oftheSisters.

Theconventhasbecome abusycentre,forSisters havebeencomingandgoing atarecordrate.There havebeenasmanyasseven Sistersthere,wherepreviouslyonlythreeresided.D.George.

LastSundaywasobservedthroughout theArchdioceseasSeminarySunday.Many youngpeoplemustaskthemselveswhatlife inaseminaryislike.Below,inasymposium, somestudentsofSt.Charles'seminary, Guildford,answerthatquery:-

Theyhavealtarserected inMary'shonour-onein theJuniorhouseandonein thePhilosophyhouse.Talentneverbeforesuspected isunearthedatthistimeof year,andallthroughthe monththesealtarsareconstantlybedeckedwithfresh flowers.

Theculminationoftheir devotionisreachedatthe endofthemonth,when,on theFeastofOurLady, MediatrixofAllGraces, theyholdacandlelightprocessionfromthechapelto thealtarinthePhilosophy house,singinghymnsonthe way.TheRosaryisrecited roundMary'sshrineandthe chapelandthewelkinrings astheysingontheirreturn. WhenBishopsRelax

Dayswhichareparticularlypleasantonesinthe seminaryarethoseonwhich wereceiveaninformal visitfromoneofourBishops.TheBishopsare verybusymen,butbecause oftheirlovefor,andinterestin,theSeminarythey usuallymanagetocomeand seeusonceortwiceeach term.HisGrace,theArchbishop,comesouttoSt. Charles' andhas lunchwiththestudents, afterwhichtheygatheron theverandahtohaveachat withhim.Hehasafew wordsforeachofthem.

HisLordshipBishop Goodyhasvisitedthem manytimessincehisconsecrationinNovemberlast year.Hewaswiththem lastyeartohelpcelebrate theirfeastdayonNovember4.Hehasasmuchinterestintheseminarynow ashehadwhenhewashere asrectorofthecollege.

theseminaryonhisway down.Hetakesthingsas hefindsthem,sometimes studentsaredressedfor studyinsoutanes,butat othertimesinshirtand shortsforwork,sportor physicaltraining.

BulldozingbyHand

Duringtheearlierportionof1951themaintopic ofdiscussionamongthestudentbodywasthatofa proposednewoval.Rumourswerepartlyconfirmed whenthesurveyorsarrived andbegantomapoutthe proposedsite.Anirritatinglapseoftimethenfollowed,duringwhichdoubts begantocreepin.Thento everyone'sdelightandthe soundofmany"Itoldyou sos,"thelatestinbulldozers roaredontotheselected siteonemorninginOctober. Theinitialnoveltyofthe worksoonworeoff,andwe werebeginningtowishthe constantroarwhichlasted from6a.m.untildusk, wouldsoonbegone. Completed,theovalwas soonaminiaturedesert withseveralhundredloads ofsandcoveringitssurface. Thissandhadtobespread, andsinceourreturnatthe beginningofthisyearthe taskhasbeenoccupyingour sparetime.However,due totheimminenceofwet weather,therectordecided tosecuretheservicesofa grader.Thislatteronits arrivalprovedtobetoo heavy,makingdeeprutsin theoval'ssurface. Soatthisstagethejobof levellingthesandisstill unfinished,butinthemeantimepreparationswillprobablybebegunforthe plantingoftreesaroundthe oval,andthelayingoutof threeterracesofrosesonits steepestslope.Whenthe sandisfinallylevelled,the ovalwillbegrassedandthe wateringsystemlaiddown. -B.Dwyer.

ThankstoHisLordship, BishopGoody,theseminary possessesataperecording machine.Itisprovingof inestimablevaluetothe students,forhavingreconciledthemselvestothefact thatitistheirownindividualvoicestheyhear,they arcablethentoknowmore preciselywhichundesirable qualities,ifany,aretobe eliminated.

PermissiontoBuild

Atlast,atteryearsof waiting,theseminaryhas beengrantedthemuchneededpermitforextensions.Withthenumbers steadilyincreasing,until thisyearwhenthereare 41students,theneedfor extensionshasbeenbecomingmoreacute.Theextensionswhichareplanned forthepresentaretheextensionoftheclass-rooms andthebuildingofasecond storeyabovethese.This secondstoreywillcomprise

Sincenewcomersarethe essentialelementforthe growthofanyseminary,the Bishops,aswellasthepa- rochialclergyofbothdioceses,areveryanxiousto makethenumberofnewcomersgroweachyear.This hasbeenthecaseespecially forthisyear;for,whenthe newtermcommenced18 newstudentsbegantheirseminarylife.

haveAlthoughonlytwomonths elapsed,sinceschool began,thenewcomershave become seminarians,alreadyreallyhappy whotrytodo theirbestinallaspectsof seminarylife.Allarefilled withenthusiasmandenergy. All-whohavecomedidso withloftyideals,forthey allknowtheyaretostrive afterthehighestofficethat manisabletoacquire,the PriesthoodofJesusChrist, theEternalHighPriest. Welivehere,inSt. Charles',likeabigfamily, andjustasthereisjoyin anordinaryfamily,when newcomersarrive,so,also, here.Everybodywelcomes them,fortheyarenotjustadditionalmembersforour football-orcricket-teams, butfurthermoretheyare fellow-studentswhohave thesameidealsandthe sameintentionofbecoming priests.Thisprovestobea bondofgreatstrength, whichisessentialforthe happycommunitylifein dormitoriesandroomsforourseminary.-J.Kloss.

HowCatholicsMay AidSpasticChildren

Sir,-Inmyletterlast week,itmaynothavebeen clearthatthetypeofchild weareinterestedinhelping iswhatusedtobeknownas the"backward"or"retarded"child,andwhatisnow knownasthe"slowlearning child."

Oneofouraimsistoopen akindergarten,wherespecialtrainingmaybegiven to"slowlearners,"whoare oftensixorsevenyearsold, buthavemindsofonlytwo orthreeyearsoldchildren. Atpresent,theSistersin ourschoolswouldnever turnoneofthesechildren awaysolongastherewas avacancy,andtheSisters aredoinginspiredwork,but theyjustcannotcopewith thenormalandslowelementtogether.

Asour"slowlearningchildren.'growalittleolder,we wanttohave,andwillhave inthenearfuture,sheltered workshops,wherethose whoareabletoworkwill beabletodoso,without havingtofacethecompetitionoftheusualworking world.Manyofthechildrencouldbeself-respectingcitizens,abletopartiallyorwhollysupportthemselves,andnotdependent upontheinvalidpensionallowedbythegovernment. Again,some"slowlearners" wouldbenefitbyworkingin competitionwithothers, providedtherewasaplace tolivewithsomebodyto takeresponsibilityofall othermatters.Hostelsunder suitableguidanceisthe solutiontothis.

Shepickeduptworaincoats,acapandoneschoolbagwhichherchargeshad leftbehindforthelasttime thattermandputthemon apegontheverandah wheresomebody'smother mightormightnotfetch themnextday.

Youhadtobeabit carefulaboutthatverandah. Thenailsstuckupinplaces andcaughtyourhabitas youwalked.Thepegs,too, tendedtocomeawayfrom thewallssoyouhadtobe carefulaboutthem.Well, theyhadbeentherefor30 yearsandin30yearsthings getagooddealofbanging atschool.

IfSisterwereinaGovernmentschoolshewould onlyhavetowriteoutan orderandthejobwouldbe donefairlyquickly,But SisterisinaCatholicschool withoutaPublicWorksdepartmentonphonecall, withonlytheparishpriest andherprayerstoturnto. Sometimesthepriestisgood atthatsortofthing,sometimesheisn't;andwhy shouldhebeeitherseeing thatheisapriestandaman ofthespiritandnotaclerk ofworks.

Butwhateverthemanual abilityoftheparishpriest thereisineveryparishany numberofmenwhocan saw,hammer,paintand evenbuildorspring-lean. Insomeparishesthemen dothesethings.Inothers, andintoomanyothers,they donot.Inconsequencethe schoolandtheteachingsufferandtheparishspends

couldbehalvedandquarteredbyvoluntarylabour.

Therearetwoorganised bodiesofmeninmostparishes:theSt.Vincentde PaulandHolyNamesocieties.VincentdePaulmen haveaccepted,itisreported, inprinciplethattheywill undertakethegoodworks ofschoolandparishrepairs andattachtothemtheusual spiritualrewards.TheHoly Namemen,however,confinetheiractivitiestothe spiritualsphereonly,althoughitsdetailedorganisationofconfraternitiesisan idealorganisationformobilisingaworkingparty quickly.

Ofcourse,youmaysay whereisthedifficulty aboutabusybee.Thereis noneuntilyoustarttoorganiseone.Ours,inalmost theprincipalparishof Perth,consistsofoneNew Australian,twomenfrom anotherparishandtwoProtestants.TheProtestants haveCatholicchildrenat theschoolandthinkthe nunsmarvellouswomen. Ourownmenseemto havegotusedtonunsbeing marvellousanddon'tthink aboutthem.Atleastnot enoughtowanttohelp them.Howarethingsin yourparish?
