ed,andsotheflowofU.S. comicshasdriedtoatrickle-thatis,directlyfrom thesource.Therubisthat therearenorestrictionson importsfromtheContinent anditisfromherethatU.S. comicsstillpourintoEnglandtosuchanextentthat onJanuary2,ofthisyear theAssociationsofAssistantMistressesinSecondary Schoolstookstepstohave comicbooksbannedinEngland.

Justtwoyearsago,the comicbookindustryinthe UnitedStatesorganisedthe AssociationofComicBook Publishers.Itadopteda "code"andpublications whichpassapre-publica-
tionreviewgettheAssociation'ssealofapproval.This soundsmostencouraging, buttheNewYorkState JointLegislativeCorranitteetoStudyComics,which heldhearingsinNewYork CitytheweekofDecember 5,1951,feltthattheindustryhaddonelittletoprove itsgoodwillinthesetwo years.Thethreatofcensorshipthroughamendment oftheStatepenallawsis hangingoverthepublishers'heads.
Grantedthatmanycomplicatedquestionsof"freedomofthepress,"statecensorship,privateenterprise, andthelikeareinvolvedin thedomesticdispute,itis certainlyamysteryhow comicbookpublisherscan besoobtusetothereaction U.S.comicsareprogressivelygettingabroad.Thereis aculturalfronttothecold (ifthat'swhatitis)war. It'satleastadebatable pointthateverysensational andsadisticU.S.comicbook thatgetsinthehandsofa foreignchild-andadults devourthem,too,astheydo hereathome-isasaboteur. Cannottheindustrysee that?

Itisseldom,perhapsnot twiceinalifetime,thatone ispermittedtheprivilegeof watchingsomegeniusat work.Andsoweowethe Australian Broadcasting commissionanenormous debtofgratitudeforhaving presentedtous,inthepersonofWalterGieseking,a mastermusician-agenius. Probablythemostoutstandingqualityaboutthis amazingmanishisversatilityinalltypesofmusic,as wasevidencedinhisprogrammeofApril29,which comprisedworksofsix composers,ranginginchronologicalorderfromBachto Ravel.
Forsomeyearswehave beenlisteningtorecordings byMr.Gieseking,andmore recently,tobroadcastsfrom theEasternStates,and werepreparedtoheara greatartist.Yetthereis alwaysanelementofsurpriseinapersonalmeeting withsomeoneofwhomone hasheardmuch,thusitwas withMr.Giseking.Theinspiredqualityinhisplaying,wehadnotbeforefully appreciated.Thathisreputationhadlongago reachedPerthwasamply provenbythealmostrecordsizeoftheaudiencesomeofwhosemembershad tobeaccommodatedonthe stageitself.
Thelargestworkonthe programme,andtheone whichdemandsthemost fromtheperformer,wasthe BeethovenSonatainAFat Major,Op.110.Asitprogressedunderthemasterful'handsofMr.Gieseking, onefelt"Hereisamusician whotrulyunderstandsBeethoven."Herewereall
chords.Inthefirstmovementonemarvelledatthe beautifullyexpressivetone ofthemelody,thegentle sighingoftheaccompaniment,andthenthefaultless ripplingofthearpeggios.
,Oneadmired,too,thejoyousplayingofthesecond, "moltoallegro,"movement, andthemoving"ariosodo lente."Butitwasinthe finalmovement-theFugue -thatweexperiencedtoits fullestextentthetremendouspowerofthisartist's technique.Everyentryof thesubjectwasclearlydistinguishable,evenwhenit wasplayedinitsinverted form,withincrediblelightness.Inthelastappearanceofthetheme,themassivechordsdemonstrated theterrifictonalrangeof thissuperbpianist.
Bach'sItalianConcerto openedtheprogramme.As withtheBeethovenfugue, onecouldpickouteach separatemelodyinthiscontrapuntalmusic;thetrills werecrystalclear.The emotionofthelovelyslow movementthrilledus,and thewholeworkhadadelightfulvitalityandlife.
Abrilliantplayingof Mendelssohn's"Andanteand RondoCapricciosocame directlyafterinterval,with passagesoffairy-likedelicacyandothers(thedouble octavesections)ofmasculinevigour.Tofollowthis weheardtheBarcarolleof Chopinplayedwithmarvellousartistry;andthen theDebussy''SuiteBergamasque."
Thislastwasexcellent, too,buthavingheardso muchofthepianistasan exponentofthiscomposer's thedynamiceffectspeculiarworks,onewouldhaveap- tothiscomposer-theterri-preciatedalaterexampleof ficcrescendos,thesuddenthem.ThatMr.Gieseking pianissimos,thecrashingisdeservingofthepraise hehasearnedasaninterpreteroftheImpressionists' compositions,wasshown byhisexquisiteperformanceofRavel's"Jeux d'Eau."
Foritsenthusiasticap- plauseafterthis,thelast itemontheprogramme,the audiencewas,rewarded withfourencores,eachan artisticmasterpiece.These werefromthepensof Grieg,Ravel,Schubert,and Chopin,andconcludeda trulymemorableconcert.M.K.
