ArrivinginPerthon April10,BrotherClancy, accompaniedbyRev.BrotherPatrickLeDuffy(first Australianassistanttothe Superior-General),leftfor St.Joseph'sTradesand Farmschool,Bindoon,on April11.

OnEasterMondayhearrivedinGeraldtonandvisitedtheBrotherswhostaff thecollegethere.Brother ClancyproceededonApril 15totheAgriculturalschool atTardun.

HewillreturntoPerth onFriday,April18,tomeet HisGracetheArchbishop. At3.30p.m.onthesame dayhewillbetendereda civicreceptionbyCr.F. BookactingLordMayor.

OnApril19,Brother ClancywillmeettheparentsofW.A.boyswhoare ChristianBrothers.Hewill lunchwithHisLordship, BishopGoody,andbeentertainedatafternoonteaat theTerracecollege.

ATechnicalschool,inwhichthecost oftheequipmenthasexceeded£2,500,will beofficiallyopenedatBoys'Town,Clontarf, byHisGracetheArchbishoponSunday, April27,theannualFieldDayoftheinstitution.

Theoccasionrepresents therevivalandextension ofthetradestaughtat Clontarfpriortothewar.

Tradestaughtattheinstitutionincludewoodwork, sheetmetalwork,and plumbing.ThereorganisationoftheTechnical schoolhasbeencarriedout byRev.BrotherAckery andRev.BrotherDoyle, whoarealsotheinstructors.

Therevivalofthe schemewasmadepossible byagrantof£2,500from theW.A.LotteriesCommissionfortechnicaleducation.Outofthissumthe costofpaintingandrenovatingthreerooms,installingfluorescentlighting,and

theelectricalwiringofthe machinesconsumed£500.

Newmachineryinstalled includesfivelathes,apower hacksaw,anelectricdrill,a twingrinder,awoodplan- ingmachine,andacircular saw. About50boyshaveembarkedonthethree-year course,whichleadstothe Juniorexamination.Brothersandboyshopethatas manypeopleaspossible willvisitClontarfonApril 27,whentheinstitutionwill beopentoinspection.

TheRev.BrotherO'Shea, managerofBoys'Town,has arrangedforspecialbuses fortheoccasion.Buseswill leavetheoldG.P.O.at15-

YetanotherchapterinthehistoryofBindoonwasopenedon April13,when,amidstcolourfulsurroundingsandinbrilliant sunshine,thefoundationstoneoftheuncompletedportionofthe newchapelwassolemnlyblessedbytheRightRev.Dr.G.Gomez, O.S.B.,LordAbbotofNewNorcia,andplacedinpositionbythe V.Rev.BrotherE.F.Clancy,LL.D.,SuperiorGeneraloftheChristianBrothers.

At3o'clockonEaster Sundayafternoonaprocessionwasformedinthe chapelquadrangle,abeautifulStatueofOurLadyof Fatimawasplacedonadecoratedplatformandwas carriedontheshouldersof fourboystudents.

Theschoolchoirunder theleadershipoftheRev. WilliamGimenezO.S.B. ledtheprocession,and.in harmonioustonerendered somebeautifullyapprop-riatehymns.Thestudents andmembersofthestaff cameafterrecitingtheRosary.

Thesewerefollowedby theLordAbbotaccompaniedbyhisLordshipthe Rt.Rev.Dr.A.Catalan 0.S.BAbbotEmeratius ofNewNorcia. TheirLordship';wereattendedbytheRev.TheodoreHernandez,O.S.B., andtheRev.AidanDuggan, C.S.B.,NoviceMaster,who actedasmasterofceremonies.

Othermembersofthe BenedictinecommunitypresentweretheRev.Urban Gimenez,O.S.B.,theRev. MichaelCave,O.S.B.,and theRev.BrotherAndrew, O.S.B.

Duringtheceremonythe LordAbbot,addressingthe gathering,saiditwasa pleasureandaprivilegeto attendanyfunctioninconnectionwithBindoon.He congratulatedtheBrothers onthemagnificentwork theyweredoingforthespiritualandtemporalwelfare oftheboysundertheircare inthatbeautifulhome.

Rev.Br.Clancysaidit wasapleasuretobepresent onsuchanauspiciousoccasion.Heexpressedhisadmirationatthewonderful workperformedbytheboys underthesupervisionof theBrothers.Hewasespeciallypleasedtomeethisold friendstheBenedictinesin thepersonsoftwosuchdistinguishedmembersofthe OrderashisLordship. BorninMilan,Father Boehmwasengagedfor manyyearsincommercein thePhilippines,Malaya, Japan,ChinaandKorea, andisconsequentlyanauthorityonAsiaticaffairs.

Hispriestlystudieswere madeinMilanandinGermany.Afterordinationhe wasappointedprivatesecretarytotheApostolicNuncioinVienna,aposthe heldforthreeyearsduring WorldWarI. In1922FatherBoehm wasappointededitorofthe "OsservatoreRomano" whichofficehehasfilled withdistinctionforthepast 30years.

Whenthe31st.InternationalEucharisticCongress

washeldinManilain1937, FatherBoehmaccompanied thelateCardinalDoherty, whowasPapalLegate,asa missionaryprelate.

Askedaboutconditionsin Europe,FatherBoehmsaid thatCommunismwasvery stronginItaly.Theparty therewasthemostpowerfuloneinthefreecountries oftheworld.

FatherBoehmwasreturningfromMelbourne.He hadbeenappointedbythe ConsistorialCongregationto fillavacancyaschaplainto Italianmigrantscomingto Australia.Afteratwomonths'absencehewasreturningtoRometoresume hiseditorialduties.

ArchbishopJarre,of Tsinan,aGerman-born Franciscan,diedinthecommunisthospitalatTsinan, formerlyconductedbythe mission,onMarch8.Until hisdeathhewaskeptunder strictpolicesurveillance. Nopriestwaspermittedto givehimtheLastSacraments.Hehadbeenremovedtothehospitalinacriticalconditionfromprison onFebruary3.The74-yearoldprelatehadbeenaccusedofattemptingtounderminetheschismatic churchmovementpromoted bythecommunistgovernment.Hewasimprisoned onNovember17oflast year.

BodyIsVenerated

Thepolicehandedover thecorpseofArchbishop Jarretopriestsseveral hoursaftertheagedprelate hadsuccumbedtopleurisy andhighbloodpressure. Thebodywasvestedinred vestmentsandcarriedback tothepublicchapelinthe hospitalthat evening.

Throngsofpeoplecame tothehospitaltopaytheir respectstotheirspiritual leaderassoonaswordof hisdeathspreadthroughout thecity.Thefollowing morning,aRequiemMass wasofferedinthechapel whileanoverflowcrowdfillingeventhegardenoutside thebuilding,chanted hymnscontinuously.The crowdsfailedtoleaveafter theMass.Theyfiledpast

Atnoonthepolicedispersedthepeoplebyforce andcommandedthatthe bodybeburiedimmediately outsidethecitynearthevillageofKu-kia-fen,seven milesfromTsinan.When thefuneralcortegereached thetownofHung-kia-lou threehourslater,itwas stoppedbythepressureof peoplewhohadcometosee theArchbishop'sbody.They protestedsostrenuously againsttheimmediateintermentthatthepoliceafter numeroustelephonecallsto thecentralpolicestation, consentedtodeferburial untilthenextday.

PoliceAreResisted

Somemembersofthe -reformed"church,distraughtcompletelybythe reactionoftheCatholics, meantimehadreportedto thepolicethattheredvestmentsinwhichtheArchbishopwastobeburied signifiedthepeople'sbelief thattheprelatehaddieda martyr.Anotherpartyof policearrivedatteno'clock thatnighttoconductan "investigation."Atone o'clockinthemorningthey orderedthatthebodybe carriedimmediatelytoKukia-fenandburied. Buttheintermenthad barelybeencompletedwhen anotherorderarrivedto disinterthebodyandcarry itbacktoHung-kia-lou again.Atteno'clockthe policearrivedandstripped theredvestmentsfromthe corpse.Whentheytriedto clothethebodyinthe uniformofacriminalprisoner,theCatholicsprotestedsoviolentlythat

licewereforcedtodesist. Theauthorities,however, refusedtorevestthecorpse inred.Itwasfinallyagreed tousewhitevestmentsfor theburial.

Thepolicetheninsisted thattheArchbishop'sbody beagainimmediatelyinterred.Thisarousedanother stormofprotestfromthe people,andmoretelephone callstothesecurityheadquarters.TheCatholics wonanotherpointwhen permissionwasreluctantly grantedtopostponeburial untilthefollowingday.

HongKong,April5.-Red"securitypolice"ofTsinanhad thebodyofthelateArchbishopCyrilJarredisinterredafterburialinordertostripitoftheredvestmentsinwhichithadbeen clothed.Theyattemptedtoreclothethebodyinaprisoner's uniform,buttheiractionsarousedsuchan4erandprotests amongthepeoplethattheyhadtodesist. Thecommunistpoliceapparentlywerecompletely bafledbythereactionsof thepeopleatthedeathof ArchbishopJarre.They reversetheirdecisionstime andagain,firstorderingthe immediateburialofthe bodytostemthetideofrisingsympathyforthe "martyr"ofTsinanthen attemptingtodiscredithim byburyinghimasa"criminal."Infaceoftheinsistenceofthepeople,asecond "burial"tookplaceaccordingtotheoriginalplansof theCatholics.

distanceofHung-ka-louSomecamefromtenmiles away.Thebodywasborne ontheshouldersofmenand womenfromHung-kia-lou tothevillageofKu-kia-fen. AlltheCatholicsescorted theremainstothegrave,to theacuteastonishmentof thepolicewhofailedtodispersethemevenwithforce. ThedeathofArchbishopJarre,martyrofTsinanfor Churchunity,marksthe death,too,ofthe"reform church"movementin Tsinan,theprieststhere believe.Those,including one accusedseniorpriest,whohad theArchbishop,and indeathhadattemptedto brandhimasa"criminal," arelaughedtoscornand derided,eveninthepresenceofthepolice.Theydo notdaretomakeanappearanceinpublic.Eveninthe eyesofthecommuniststhey havesinnedgrievously againsttheprincipaltenet ofthecampaignforthe destructionofthechurch: "Don'tmakemartyrs!"

Theoctaltradesdisputeisanaffair,theincreasingcompleXityofwhich,mightwellexcusethe laymaninevadingordeferringjudgmentuponthe issuesatstake.Muchofthisconfusionarisesfrom thelegaljurisdictioninvolved,wherebysomeofthe strikersmayobtainconsiderationonlyfromFederal authoritiesandothersfromtheStateArbitration Court.Anotherelementofbafflementspringsfrom alackco-ordinationinUnionpolicyisasmuch asthestrikeisprolongedinoneplacewhileworkis resumedatleasttemporarily)inanother.

Themuddle,however,isnotallonthesideof thexvorkers.Theverymachineryofconciliation isfouledbytheconciliatorsthemselves,sothat whileMr-Galsinrefusedandrefusesthemarginal demands,Mr.Findlaygrantsthem,andMr.Austin iswillingtoheartheargument.Thereis,moreover,noover-ridingauthoritywhichmayclarifythe issuesthroughappeal.Whiletheconciliationsystemworkedsuccessfully,itwasadmirableintheexpeditionwithwhichindustrialdisputescouldbe heard.Initsfailure,themalcontentsatleastcannotcryoutaboutpoliticalmachinationsagainstthe workers,forconciliationwasachildofLabour's brain.

Itisnowbruitedinsomequartersthatrightof appealagainstconciliationcommissionersshouldlie withtheArbitrationCourts.Andthisbringsusup againstthecentralissueoftheindustrialupheavals utthepresentandthepast.IftheUnionsoremployersdonotfeelthemselvestobeunderany moralobligationtoacceptthefindingsofconciliation,isthereanyreasontosupposetheywillbe betterdisposedtowardsarbitration?WhereaUnion istrulyfreeofsubversiveorulteriordirection,there maybehope.Butwherethereis"inspired"upheaval,nosystemwillworkbecauseagitatorswant troubleandwillachieveitwilly-nilly.

Oftheissuesatstakeinthemetaltradesdisputesthereseemsnoquestionbutthatthemargins forskillshouldbeincreased.Whethertheyshould bedoubledisaquestionforexpertstodecide.But whetherasubstantialriseinthemarginswillwreck orseriouslymilitateagainstthenationaleconomyseemstoustoogreatadecisiontoleavetoanyone shortoftheFederalGovernmentitself.Ifthemetal workers'claimis,inwholeorpart,ajustone,butis refusedbyconstitutedauthority,groundsforstrike actiondonotimmediatelyemerge.

Thestrikeis,morallyandrationally,theweapon oflastresort.Becausetheyfailedbeforeoneconciliationcommissionerwasnoreasonwhythe metalworkersshouldembroilthecommunityin gravefinanciallossandinconvenience.Thesmall numbersinvolved(atleastinitially)betokened, moreover,thatstrikeactionwasaminoritydecision, resortedtoasaresultofoutsideinfluence.Themetal workers,ortheirleadersanyway,mustknowthat nostrikewillsucceedwithoutpublicsupport.In thepresentinstancetheywillfindpreciouslittle sympathyfromtheman-in-the-street-areflection whichmayeventuallyinfluencethemtochangetheir tactics.

Churchesarenecessary thenforpreachingand worshipandasplacesin whichChristhimselfinthe "BlessedEucharistcandwell amongHispeople.

Whatexactlywouldthe questioner Isit thatwearetostopchurch buildinguntilthereisno povertyorstarvationinthe world?That,candidly,is absurd.Povertyandstarvationwillnotbelessenedby suspendingthebuildingof churchesorbybuilding uglyratherthanbeautiful churches.Inanycasemost ofthemoneythatisspent inchurchbuildinggoesul- timatelyintosomeone'spay envelopeandhelpstolessen povertyintheneighbourhoodbyprovidingmore employment.

Whatisreallyattheback ofthequestionisthesuggestionthattheChurch,in herenthusiasmforchurch building,isneglectingthecorporalworksofmercy.

Thatsuggestionisjust downrightcalumny.What theChurchspendsonthe buildingandmaintenance ofChurchesisaninfinitesimalfractionofwhatis spentinthereliefofdistess.Inthoseplacesand timeswherebeautiful churchesarebuiltyouwill findanactiveChristianlife andsuchlifeisunthinkable withoutthepracticalobservanceofthesecondcommandment;thoushaltlove thyneighbourasthyself.

Thepeoplewhobuild thechurchesandfillthem whentheyarebuiltarethe samepeoplewhocarefor theneedy,feedthehungry andclothethenaked.Itis notthecriticwhostands asideandasks:Whywasn't thissoldandthemoney giventothepoor,thathas anyrealinterestinthepoor.
