inforceandsincebecome operative.Itwasanastoniiihingthingthatnogovernmentuptillnowhad seenfittohelptheconvents insometangibleandpracticalwayandhehadno hesitationinmakinghis viewspublic.Hewished thatthebuildingswould fulfillthehopesofallthose whohadbeenassociated withtheirerectionand

theHonPremier(Mr.McLarcy)onhistripthrough theWarrenDistrictandhe couldnowsaythattheWarren.District(Pemberton andNorthcliffeinparticu- lar)wouldshareinthefu LureprosperityoftheState thatwasonthecrestofthe biggestphaseofexpansion industriallyandagricultu rallyitbiasknownandin thisrapidtransitionPembertonparticularlywould becalleduponforgreat thingsasitwasthecentre ofthevastkarrireserves.

FatherKellysaiditwasa happydayforthePembertonparishasitsawthe realisationofthehopesof many.HewelcomedDr. Goodytotheparishand alsopaidtributetothehelp givenbyMr.E.K.Hoar, M.L.A.,theManjimupRoad Board(representedbyMr. F.E.Wiseman),Mr.F.W. Leeman(managerofState SawMillsPemberton).

Tobringtofruitiona boldplantoprovideat onceaschoolapresbytery andaconventwasonly madepossiblebythespirit ofgenerosityandwilling. nessoftheparishionersand fortheirhelpFr.Kelly saidhewasindeedgrateful. Menandwomenalikehad labouredlongandlateina raceagainsttimetohave everythingreadyforthe opening,whichwastaking placeinanatmosphereof goodwillandgenerosityfromeveryone.

HethankedtheRev.P. DuffyofManjimupfor whathehaddoneinthe parishinsuccessiontoRev. Dr.Kearnan(unfortuna-telyunabletobepresentfromKalamunda)andit hadbeencomparatively easyforhimtocarryon wheretheyhadleftoff.

Muchhadbeenaccomplished-muchgemained-as fromacapitaloutlayof £.714'00,some£1000had alreadybeenpaidoffand thebigloadhadtobeassumedbythefaithfu1 peopleofPemberton.

Addedtowhichwasa deepdebtofgratitudeto thelegionofmenand womenwhohadlaboured insomanyways,dayinday outandoftenlateintothe night.Thosewhohadnot beenabletoshareinthe manuallabourmightbe gladtoshareinthefinancial burdenoftheparishandhelp,meetthebalanceof the£6000owingonthe structuresDr.Goodysaid.

SistersWelcomed

Thegrossoutlayap- pearedtohimtoberidiculouslylow,whichpointed thatatremendousamount ofmaterialmighthavebeen providedfreeandaequally generousamountofvoluntarylabourgoneintothe project.HeextendedacordialwelcometotheSisters ofSt.Joseph,membersof anOrderfoundedbyan AustralianinAustraliato meetAustralianconditions andhetrustedtheirwork wouldmeritsincereand lastingco-operationofpa- rishioners.

AGNESDWYER, oftheCathedralparish,has beenamemberofthe N.C.G.M.Athleticclub sinceitsinceptiontwoyears ago.Agnesparticipatesin fieldevents,namely,shot putt,javelin,anddiscus. hadexpandedfroma"Mass centre"toaproperlyequip- pedparishinitsownright. Here-echoedthegrati-tudeofalltothehelpgiven byMr.Hoarandthe exemplaryco-operationof theManjimupRoadBoard anditwasevidentfromthe outsetthatthebuildings nowprovidedwouldbenefit thecommunityandbeadistinctlyimprovementto thearchitecturalstabilityof Pemberton.Specialthanks wereduetoMr.P.H. Finallyhewishedto thankallthosewhohad helpedinbringingthis magnificentplantosucha successfulconclusionand askedGod'sblessingsfor thefutureinthegenerous measurewhichHehad showninthepast.Hefelt surethebuildingswould longandfaithfullyserve thepriest,theSistersand peopleofPembertoninthe GloryofGodandtheinestimablebenefitofthe parish.

Mr.Hoarsaidhewasdelightedthatsuchanambitiousplanhadbeenfulfilled andtheywoulddoubtless fillalongfeltwantinthe community.Hehadcometo knowandappreciatethe wonderfulworkthatconventsweredoinginremote areas.Ithadbecomeever soapparenttohimsince 1939thatthelackofbuildingsandteachersforstate schoolswouldhavecaused thegovernmenttremendous embarrassmenthaditnot beenfortheconventsthen

beingnowsowellequipped,theparishcouldface thefuturewithconfidence.

FutureofSouth-West

Mr.Wisemanapologised fortheabsenceofthechairmanoftheRoadBoard (Mr.Thompson)and MemberforPemberton(Mr. Hill)whowereonofficial businessatWalpolethat day.Heassuredhisaudiencethattheboardwas alwaysinterestedinmoves thatbenefitpeoplegene- rally.Itwasapparentthat oneofthegreateItneeds todaywasreligionandthe practiceoftheChristian spiritandtolerancetowards eachother,somethingwhich wassometimesoverlooked. HeknewtheMamjimup conventaccommodationto betaxedtothelimitand thenewconventwouldnow assumeitsrightfulshare forthetuitionandguidance ofthechildrenofPember. tonEastbrook,andDiamond. Tree.Forthepasttwodays hesaid,hehadaccompanied

FatherKellyLauded Hewasthankfulthatfor ayoungdistrictlikePemberton,ayoungpriestof thecalibreofFr.Kellyhad beenappointedandthe comingoftheSisterswould rewardthedistricttenfold. Estimatesforeducationstill fallfarshortofwhatthey shouldbebuthedidnot knowwhatwouldhappen wereitnotforprivate schools-mainlyconvents.It wastimelythatsomeassistanceshouldbeforthcomingforthem.Theactivities oftheparishionersofPembertonrivalledthebold planningofFonty'sAustraliaDayCommitteeand whilethePembertonpeople plantedpotatoesforChurch fundsandbyunskilledlabouralmostcompletely builttheconvent,thereappearedthatnothingwas beyondtheirattainments.

Hewaspleasedtoknow thatRev.Dr.Kearnanhad beenaffectionatelyrememberedforhisearlypioneeringworkinthedistrict.He andtheboardasawhole wouldbehappytoassist thechurchinanywayit couldinthefutureandassuredtheleadersofcontinuedco-operationsorichly deserving.

WonderandEnvy

Mr.Leemansaidhewas verypleasedtoseethe culminationoftheeffortsof FatherKellyandhiscooperators,inprovidingso muchforthereligiousand culturalfutureofPemberton.Theattainmentsof FatherKellyandhispa- rishionerswouldturnHous-

ingCommissionexecutives greenwithenvyifthey learnedhowmuchhadbeen accomplishedforanoutlay of£7000."Iwouldeven iketohaveFatherKelly foraforeman"Mr.Leeman saidinconclusion.

Theoccasionalsermon waspreachedbytheVery Rev.J.P.Wilkinson,CM., RectorofSt.Charles'seminary.Afterrelatingthe

GospelstoryofZacchaeus, hesaid:

Itisindeedawonderful story-allthemorewonderfulbecauseitistrueand becauseithasbeenrepeatedagainandagain.Itwas repeated50yearsagohere inMidlandinthisvery place,forOurLordsaidnot toonepersonbuttoallthe Catholicsofthiscommunity,toallthepeopleofthis town:"To-dayImustabide inyourhouse,becausethe SonofManiscometoseek andtosavethatwhichwas lost."

Indeeditwasinyour house,ahousebuiltbythe Catholiccommunity,by peopleandbypriest.The sacrificeoftheMasshad beenofferedinMidlandfor thefirsttimebythelate MonsignorFagan,thena youngpriest,intheopenair onavacantallotment,the altarbeingimprovisedupon onoldtreestump.Later, theCatholiccommunity gatheredintheCouncil Chambers,usedasaschool, wheretheCommonwealth Banknowstands,forthe offeringofSundayMass, until,undertheinspiration ofFatherMorris,theCatholicsofMidlandJunction wentintotheadventureof buildingtheirownchurch. Bricksandsandwere broughtbythelateMr.Andersonand,nodoubt,many othershelpedinthework ofbuildingahousewhere GodHimselfwoulddwell underthehumblesacramentalforms.

Thegreateventtookplace onCandlemasDayin1902, whenthelateBishopGibneyblessedandopenedthe churchinhonourofSt. Brigid,whosefeasthad beenkeptthedaybefore.

Weareprivilegedtohave presentonthisoccasionthe illustrioussuccessorof thosegreatBishops,His GraceArchbishopPrendiville.Thereareherealso menandwomenwhotook partinthosecelebrations: menlikeMr.T.M.Clune, whoservedthefirstMassin Midlandinthelatenineties andwho,attheopeningof thechurch,waschosento readtheaddressofwel-

BishopGibneyexpressed hisconfidenceinthepeople oftheparish,andspokeof theobligationofparentsto sendtheirchildrentoCatholicschools.

Aluncheonwastendered thevisitorsinNiland's hotel,whereitwasannouncedthatthemorning'sappealhadresultedin£300 towardthebuildingfund.

Youhavereadthatwhen ColumbusfoundtheIslandsinthewest,many othersailorssoonfollowedtoshareinthe richtrade.Inaveryshort timetheyhadexploredallthelandsroundthe CaribbeanSea,whichthe KingofSpainthenclaimed forhisown.Oneofthe mostfamousofthesemen, Balboa,hadclimbedtothe topofamountainnearDarien,ontheisthmusofPanama,andfromtherehad seenanewocean,whichhe calledtheSouthernSea.

Whennewsofthisgreat discoveryreachedEurope,a sailornamedMagellan,who hadvoyagedtotheSpice Islands,haddreamsoffindinghiswaytothembysailingwestwardacrossthat seaonwhichBalboahad looked.TheKingofPortugal,beforewhomhelaid hisplans.refusedtolistento him.MagellanthencrossedtoSpain,wherethe youngKingwelcomedhim gladly,andatonceordered thatfiveshipsshouldbe madereadyforthevoyage.
