Womenoftheparishwill servemorningteatoparishionersandvisitorsafter theMass.

Abronzetabletcommemoratingthefunctionwillbe affixedinthechurchporch.

AsSt.Brigid'shasbeen theMotherChurchinan extensiveparishoverthe past50years,itisexpected thatmanypeoplefromoutlyingdistrictswillattend

Theorderwasfoundedby MotherVittoriadeiConti Miasitowardtheendofthe 16th.centuryinParma, Italy.Specialisinginthe educationofyouth,they startedtheirmissionary workinChinain1926in collaborationwith the JesuitFathers,uponwhose ruletheirownconstitutions arebased.

Dublinhaswonworldrecognitionforthedesignand coloursofitsstainedglsss windowsindustry.In1949, aDublinartist,MissEvie Hone,aconverttothe Faith,woninopencompetitionwithartistsinEurope, England,andIreland,with herdesignforagreatwindow,32by30feet,toreplaceoneinEtoncollege chapel,damagedinanair raidin1940.IvisitedMiss HoneinherstudioatRathfarnham,Dublin,andsaw heratworkonthewindow whosedesignissimliarto thesanctuarywindowofSt. Mary'sCathedral,Perth.

HarryClarke'sdesignfor acommemorativewindow intheLeagueofNations buildingatGenevacaught theattentionoftheworld andordersforwindows,especiallyfromU.S.A.,came quicklytohisstudioin NorthFrederickstreet, Dublin.Hewasrecognisedasthecreatorofablue glassthatwasthenearest approachinmodernglassto thefamousbluesofChartresCathedral,some50 milessouthofParis.The rosewindowinSt.Columba'schurch,SouthPerth, wasdesignedandmadeby HarryClarke,andconsideredbyhimasoneofhis best.ThefiguresofSt. Columba,St.Patrick,and St.Brigidareuniqueindesignandrichincolour, whilethethreeroundels comefromtheBookof Kells,anilluminatedMSS oftheFourGospels,nowin Trinitycollege,Dublin,and recognisedasthemost beautifulexampleofthe ancientIrishcopyists,who madesuchbooksbyhand. WatchingtheClarkestudio makingtherosewindow,I oftenmetayoungartist workingonthewindow whohassincebecomea greatartist;hisnameis RichardKing.Ifyoueve getacopyofthe"Capuchin Annual,"printedinDublin, youwillseeeachyearRichardKing'scolouredplates onthesaintsofIrelandand otherreligioussubjects.His geniusasablackandwhite artistmaybeseenintheillustrationsoftheMysteries oftheRosary,whichhedid, gratuitOusly,fortheC.T.S. pamphlet,"RosaryMeditations."Theairmailstamps, andallthespecialstamps, v.g.,theHolyYearone, weredesignedbyhim.His Christmascards,patterned onstainedglasswindows, haveawidesaleathome andinU.S.A.

RichardKingisadedicatedartistoffaithand pietywho,toquotetheeditorofthe"CapuchinAnnual,""alwayspaintsonhis knees,"forhenevertouches canvasorglasswithout prayerandmeditationto aidhisinspiration."Like thegentleItalianpainter, FraAngelico,whosefrescos onthewallsofthemonks' cellsinthemonasteryof SanMarcowerecalledby him"windowsintoheaven," designedbyhimtohelphis brothers'spiritualvision,so RichardKinggoesbackto thestoriedwindowsofthe medievalcathedralstohelp ourthoughtstosoil'to heaven.

Thegrouping shouldwinfamiliestopray togetheriftheywouldstay together.Thelowerpanel depictstheflightintoEgypt. Youcansensetheworry,theanxiety,andthehurry thattheangel'scommand causedMaryandJoseph. RichardKingreachesgreat heightsinhisinterpretation oftheflightintostained glass.

HAILQUEENOFHEAVEN

Lookingatthebluesand purplesofthewindowto theQueenofHeaven,helps ustosaythe"Hail,Holy Queen"asweneversaidit before.Herfaceisqueenly,andhereyesfollowyou aroundthesanctuary.She hasthemostdelicatehands, reallyfleshcoloured,with taperingfingers,openina gestureofwelcomefrom ourQueen.Onhergown isthesymbolofthemiraculousmedal.Herfeetrest ona.crescentmoon,andthe paleblueofhersandals withtheirbucklesofjewels delightyou.Herdiadem ofpreciousstonessparkles intheearlymorning,and thetwelvestarsinherhalo arereallylovelyinthedark bluebackground.Thelower panelistheAnnunciation. TheHolySpiritasaDove overshadowstheVirgin Mary,Hisdivinerayspenetratingherbody.Thewings oftheArchangelGabriel aredottedwithsaffrontints. Theinlaysofalabasterat

thebottomareverypleasing.

THEINFANTOFPRAGUE

Both'windowsonthe epistlesidemustbeseenin theafternoonsun,which lightsuptheunusualhalo oftheInfant,andmakes Hisroyalrobeglow.This windowwasthemostdifficulttocreate,becauseit hadtobalancetheothers. Twoheraldicangelswith widewings,givingscopefor richcolours,buildupthe Infant.Ablood-redHeart overthelettersIHSisa happydetail.Thefaceof theBabeiswinsomeinits appeal.Thelaceruffles arerealistic,andthetiny hands,onewiththeblueorb oftheworld,andtheother raisedinbenediction,are alive.Theredbrocadeon Hisroyalcoronationrobe dazzlesoneintheafternoon sun.Therearefivelayers ofglasstogivethiseffect ofembroidery.ThiswindowshouldspreaddevotiontotheHolyChild Jesusandthetwelveyears ofHissacredinfancy.

Theanxietyoftheuneasyyearssincethewar ended(withoutpeacetreaties)inthearmedtruceon whicheverynationisnowwastingitssubstance,is findingacloserfocusonthedomestichearthsofthe people.Thetwoissuesarenot,ofcourse,unrelated,butwhetherthecostofself-defenceagainst thecoldwarischieflyorevenprimarilytheroot' cause,ofinflationisatopicbristlingwithdebate. Suchagrave,menacing,andcomplexproblemisinflationthatitdeservedlyformedthethemeofthe AdultEducationBoard'sSummerschool.What emerged,insofarasthatmayhegaugedfrommeagre pressreports,isthattheprofessorsareasconfused astheproletariat.Itwouldseemthateconomics asasciencehasaboutthesamedegreeofcertainty. andexactitudeaspsychology-whichisnotareflectioncalculatedtocomfortpeopleintheirlast hours.

St.FrancisXavierdied Nov.27,1552,ontheisleof Sancianoffthecoastof China,with,itissaid,his armsextendedtowardthe ForbiddenKingdomithad beenhishopetoenter. OthermissionariesinsubsequentyearsmadeattemptstocarrytheGospel totheChinese,butwithout notablesuccess.Itremained forFatherMatteoRicci,S.J. (1552-1610),tobeginin 1583thesolidfoundationon whichmissionarieshave sincebuilt.

FatherRicci'ssuccessis dueingreatparttoone convertwhomhereceived intotheChurch.Thisman, laterMinisterofStateto theEmperor,wasSin Koang-Ki,baptizedPaulby FatherRicci.

FatherRicciandhiscompanionsontheirentrance intoChinacouldnotbegin immediatelybypreaching theGospel.TheChineserefusedtoadmitthatthey hadanythingtolearnfrom anyothernation,andifthe Jesuitshadboldlyannouncedthattheyweremissionariestheywouldhavebeen summarilyexpelled.

Instead,thepriestsset upquartersinahouseand placedonprominentdisplay

alargepictureoftheBlessedMotherandChildand severalscientificarticles theyhadbroughtwith them-suchaswatches, prisms,astronomicalinstruments,books,maps,etc. Ohinesevisitorswereinterested,intheseobjectsand askedquestions-theopportunityforthemissionaries toexplaintheChristianreligion.

FatherRiccinextcomposedasmallcatechism,in whichthechiefpointsof theChristianreligionwere explainedinadialoguebetweenapaganandaChristian.Hefoundthatthecatechismwaswellreceived asagiftbythemandarins whoweretheculturaland politicalleadersofthetime. Itwasthiscatechismthat gavethefamousSiuKoangKihisacquaintancewith theCatholicreligion.

SiuKoang-Kiwasborn ofpoorparentsatShanghai in1562.Therewasnohereditaryaristocracyof higherofficialdominthose days,butallcandidateshad topassofficialexaminations thatopenedthepathtothe mandarinate.SiuKoang-Ki studiedatShanghaiand passedhislicentiateexaminationinPekingin159's. Hefailedtoobtainhisdoctor'sdegree,and,leaving

Peking,wenttoSoutn China.

HereinKoang-tonghe metFatherCattaneo,aconfrereofFatherRicci.When hecametoNankingin1600 hemetFatherRiccihimselt andheardhimpreach. Whatimpressedhimmost wasthattheseforeign preachersrepresentedGod astheoriginofallthings.

SiuKoang-Kiwasin searchoflight.Hehad studiedtheBuddhistand Taoistscholars,andtried togetaclearideaofthe natureofthesoulandits immortalityandthefuture life,butnothingsatisfied him.Whenhereturnedto Nankingagainin1603grace hadpreparedhim.Hewas soimpressedbytheexplanationsofthemissionaries thathewishedtobecomea Christianatonce.

Thepriestsgavehimthe catechismofFatherRicci, whichhestudiedandmemorizedduringthenight.

Inthemorningheasked forfurtherexplanations andimmediateBaptism, sincehehadtoreturnto Shanghai.Butthemissionariesmadehimwaitanother week,andtwiceeachday hereceivedinstructions.

Afteraweek,SiuKoangKiwasbaptizedandalmost immediatelybeganwinning ChinesescholarstoChrist.

Thenewconvertpassedthe mandarinateexaminations in1604withgreathonours, andwasoneof24whoreceivedthetitleofacademi-

cian.Withinafewyears Siu'swholefamilybecame Christian.

AtPekingSiuandFather Ricciworkedtogether:The Jesuitforawholeyear gavetheChineseChristian instructionsinthesciences -mathematics,geometry, astronomy,etc.-andSiu translateditallintoChinese.FatherRiccialso wroteseveralreligioustreatises,whichSiutranslated intoChineseandwhichare modelstothisday.

AfterFatherRicci'sdeath in1610Siubecametheprotectorofthemissionaries. Itwasaturbulenttimein China,withthedynasty weakandinvadingTatars advancingonthecapital. Enemiesbroughtthemissionariesintodisfavour,but Siuwroteadefencethat broughtmanytosympathize withthem.

Siuwasentrustedwith thereorganizationofthe Chinesearmytorepelthe Tatars,butwasnevertoo busytoaidthemissionaries wheneverhecould.During thelastfiveyearsofhis lifehewaspresidentofthe ministryofworshipand tutoroftheyoungimperial prince.TheChurchspread moreandmore,andby 1628therewerechurches inmanycitiesandmany convertshadbeenmade amongthehigherclasses, whowerefirstatractedby themissionaries'culture andknowledgeofscience, andthenintroducedtothe truereligion.UnderSius influenceaChristianchapel wasinstalledintheimperial palaceandtheEmperororderedallidolstobedestroyed,althoughhedidnot himselfbecomeaChristian.

Ifaprofessorofmathematicsinsistedondefending thetheorythat2plus2 equalled5,hewouldberemovedfromhispositionbecausehehadlosthisreason.Ifateacherofmoral philosophyorsociology,for example,advocatedmurder asoneofthefineartsand encourageditspracticeasa meansofconsumingthe surplusenergyofhisstudents,orifheopenlyorganisedbandsofhooligans topreyuponsocietyandto molestinnocentpeople,he wouldberemovedasa menacetosociety.

Inotherwords,freedom hasalwaysandmustalways beregulatedbyreasonable compliancewiththelaw.

ReasonabletoObey

Thewillworksonmaterialwhichhasbeenpresentedtoitbytheintellect,and whereastheobjectofspeculativethoughtis"being" "andtheessenceofthings, theobjectofpracticalreasoningis"thegood.''The reasonableapplicationof theprinciple"thatgoodis tobesoughtandevilavoided"isthemeansofprocur- ingthe"good."

St.Thomasconsidered 'thatinpracticalmatters thiswasasreliableafirst principleasintheirown spherearethefirstprinciplesoflogic.Whenalaw isseenbytheintellectin thislight,itisclearlyreasonabletoobey,andthe willmayfreelyelectto 'obey.

WhatIamgettingatis notthatmenmaynotdeliberatelydisobeyreasonable laws-(theyoftendo,and thisnodoubtisanadditionalproofoftheexistence offreewill),butthatthey canfreely,thatiswithtrue liberty,obeyreasonable lawsandthatonlythenare theyactinginthehighest .enseasfreeandrational ,creatures.

Ifatruelawmustbereasonablethenitbecomes reasonabletoobey;thereforeinobediencereasonablenessisessential.To obeyanarbitrarylaw wouldbeslavery,butto obeyarationalrulingisto behaveasamanandnot likethebeastsofburden. Man'shighestactivityisto actfromreason;anyother actionisaslaverytosomething-whethertoone's ownpassionsortothedictatorialwillofanother.Rationalobedienceisthereforefreedom.

WhatofHumanLaw

Iamfullyawarethatto leavethematterofourduty ,toobeylawsonthehigh leveloftheoryandfirst principleswouldbebegging thequestion.Whatwereallywanttogetatisthe natureoftheobligationto obeyhumanlaws.Whenis itreasonabletoobeythem; inotherwords,whencan weobeythemandstillretaintrueliberty?

It-maybeqUitedifficuif sometimesfortheordinary citizentoseeforhimself whetheralawisnecessarily derivedfromtheNatural Law;then,secondly,he mayhavearootedobjection totherulerinsofarashe belongstoapartywith whichhehaslittleorno sympathy;then,thirdly,a lawmayseemtobevery oppressivewithoutbeing positivelyunjust;lastly,the lawmayappeartobethoroughlywrong.

Theninthesecondplace itisnotnecessaryforthe individualtoseetherea-

OnJan.19,HisLordshipBishopGoodyaddressedtheannualcongressoftheNationalUnionofAustralian-UniversityStudentsatAraluen,onthesubjectofthe"OutlookforAcademicFreedom."BelowisgivenaprecisofHisLordship'sremarks. sonablenessofeverylaw noreventoenquireand satisfyhimselfonthereasonablenessofeverylaw aboutwhichhemaybe doubtful.

Ifthegovernment,inthe wordsofSt.Thomas,"has theconsentofthegoverned,"thatis,ifitruleswith theirapprovaloratleast withtheirpeacefulacquiescence,thenitcanbepre- sumedthatitisforthe commongood,unlessit clearlyonthefaceofitis notso.

Veryprobablytheques- tionofthegovernedliking ordislikingtheirrulers neverenteredSt.Thomas' mindasareasonforobeyingordisobeying.But now-a-days,whensomany rulersarepartymen,the dislikeforthembytheir opponentsofotherparties isoftenacute,andthisdislikeisusuallyasymptom thatarationaljudgmenthasbeenarrivedatby whichtheoppositionconsidersthatthegovernment isnotrulingforthegoodof allbutonlyfortheadvantageofthemenoftheir ownparty.

Thequestionofobedience inthiscasecanbetrulydifficult,andtheonlysolution wouldseemtobethatgiven bySt.Thomasforasimilar case:that,namely,forexternalreasonsitmaybe righttoobey-that,forinstance,ofavoidingagreater evil.Andonceagainobe- dienceisreasonableand thereforealsoconsonant withliberty.

EverCorrigible

Theinstitutionsdescribed adjectivelyasacademicare nodoubttheschoolsoftertiaryinstruction,which, likeallschools,consistof theteachersandthetaught. Theformerarepresumed tobeintellectuallymature, thelatterclearlylessso.

Noonewithanymental balancewillclaimthathe knowseverythingabout anything,anditisanevery dayexperienceofallofus thatthewiserthemanthe lessheadvertiseshisknowledge,andalthoughhereasonablywillbeexpectedto expressandjustifyhis opinions,andalthough rightlyhewillstronglyadvocateconolusionswhichhe considerscertain,heshould allowthepossibilityofhis beingwrong.

Thereisalwaysthepossibilityoferrorexcept,in firstprinciplesandconclusionsobviouslyderived fromthemandinmatters whichhaveclearlybeenrevealedbyGodHimself.So manyconclusionswhichin thepastwereconsidered axiomatichavesinceprovedtobeatleastpartially erroneous,thatindeedthat pedagoguewillbetemerariouswhowillstateatheory,whichhefirmlyholds,to benecessarilytheultimate truth.

If andexamplesareneeded, theyarelegion,letthe physics,astronomy,chemistry,andhistoryofthe nineteenthcentury,heldby somanyatthattimeto haveprogressedtotheultimatetruth,showusthe warninglightagainstatoo dogmaticadherencetothe

popularopinionsoftheday.

Academicfreedom,rightlyunderstood,isamostdesirablepossessionforanyof oureducationalinstitutions -asistruefreedominany otherbranchofhumanacfreedomisnegativeaswellaspositive.It shouldconfernotonlythe righttospeak,forexample,butalsotherightnot tobespokenatinaway whichmaysubtlydeprive theaudienceofitsintellectualfreedom.

"Bashed"byTheory

Mypointisthatacademic freedom,inthewayIunderstandit,meansriotonly therightoftheprofessorto statehisopinions,butalso therightofthestudentto maintainhisfreedomand nottobeintellectually "bashed"bytheoriesproposedtohimaseternal truthsandinwhich,inhis immaturestate,heisunable eithertoseeany'fallacies orwhichheisunableeffectivelytocriticise.

Theopinionsofsuccessful sportsmenandactresseson, forexample,highermathematicsormoralphilosophy, areofnoscientificvalue, andIpersonallywouldgive littleweighttotheopinions ofaneminenttheologianon, say,thesubjectofnuclear physics.

Idon'tthinkeitherthat peopleshouldbeforcedby themodernefficientmeans ofpublicityandpropagandatoaccepttheopinionsofscientistsandmathematiciansonsubjects whichhavenotbeentheir particularstudy,andupon whichtheyhavenospecial authoritytospeak.

Freedomfromthissortof influenceis,Iconsider,part ofthefreedomtowhich academiciansandothersare entitled.Inotherwords, freedom,whetheracademic oranyothersort,isadesirableacquisitionora treasuredpossessionofboth thestrongandtheweak,of boththegreatandthelittle people,ofboththelearned andtheunlearned.

ForSmallandWeak Freedomhasalwaystendedtobelongexclusivelyto thegreatandthestrong, whereasitistherightof thesmallandtheweaktoo. Soalsoinacademicmattersfreedomisnotsurely claimedasthemonopoly ofthelearnedbutshould belongalsotothelearners aswell.

AsIseeit,thefreedom rightlydesiredbythesmall andtheweakisanegativefreedom,freedomnottobe imposeduponbythe strong;so,too,Iconceive thefreedomoftheacademic student-nottobementally bludgeonedbyhisintellectualbetters.

BythisIdon'tmeanto implythattheonlyfreedom duetostudentsisthisnega- tivefreedomfromunfair attack,andthatotherwise theyshouldbeseenandnot heard.Thiswouldnot onlybeentirelyaliento theirintellectualvitality, stimulatedasitisconstantlybytheirstudiesanddiscussions,butitwouldstifle theirintellectualdevelopment.

Ifonlystudentswould strivetoretainsufficient

humilitytorememberthat theyarelearnersandthereforestillimmature;sufficientmentalbalancetorealisethatmanyoftheir flightsofidealismwillbe considerablytemperedlater onbyrealityandexperience,thenmanyoftheexcessesofstudents,someof whichwelearnofandread about,butmostofwhich areintellectualexcesses privatetotheindividual, wouldbeavoided.

Itwouldalsoresultin rulersofwhateverformof governtmenttheremaybe notbeingexasperatedbyirresponsiblebutquiteoften influentialstudentgroups. Therewouldbelesstemp- tationtothemtorepressa studentbodywhichsometimesseriouslyembarrasses acivilgovernment.

Iwouldsaythatthepre- servationofproperaca-demicfreedom,orshallwe saytheOutlookforAcademicFreedom,depends mainlyontwofactorsfirst,theavoidanceoftotalitariangovernmentand, second,thefullerrealisation by whetherallacademicpeople, learnedorlearners,

oftheirresponsibilitiesand ofthetruththatrealfreedom,asdistinctfromirresponsiblelicenceisaconsequenceofgoodgovernment, justlaws,andrationalobedience.

Tomymindtheonlysys- temofdemocracywhich willmaintainfreedomin general,andwithitacademicfreedom,isthat whichreplacesauthorityon itsthronesupportedbyjus- ticeandrationalobedience. AuthoritycomesfromGoa andistransmittedtothe ruler.LawsareanexpressionofGod'swillfor us,andbecauseofthesupremewisdomofHiswill areobeyedfreelybymen. Powerismerelyanecessaryadjunctforthemaintenanceofauthorityand notanendinitself.

Hereisnotthetimeor theplaceforadetailedexpositionoftheidealofa Christiandemocracy.It seemssoclear,however, thatthereissomethingradicallywrongwithademocracyonthetraditional Frenchmodel,whichhas beenthetypeusedinalmosteverycountrywhich

Therearenotlacking signsthatourowntypeor democraticgovernmentis slowlybutsteelyheading inthesamedirection.The outlookforacademicfreedomundersuchconditions growsdimmer,anditseems tomethattheprofessional intellectualsoftheacademicworld-iftheyare trulyinterestedinthepre- servationoffreedomrather thantheimpositionon othersoftheirownideascandomuchtokeepthe lightburningandtoencourageittofurtherbrilliance.

HumbleApproach

Forthefulfillingofthis noblechargeisneededprofoundandimpartialstudy ofthenatureandoriginsof ourfreedom;ofthetrendS whichhistorytellsusare foritsundoingandthe meanswhichareatourdisposalforgivingitrenewed lifeandvigour.
