AnysimilaritybetweenmembersoftheManjimupHoly Namesocietyandabigtimelumbercrewwhentheyattended earlyMassatSt.Joseph'schurchonSundayJan.6,wasdefinitely notcoincidental;itwasstrictlybydesign.Forthemajorityof thebranchmemberswerejustthatandattheconclusionof Mass,heldanhourearlierthanusualfortheirbenefit,they boardedheavytransportsandheadedfortheforests.Arugged crewtheywere-fromBankmanagerstoshopassistants,equippedwithaxes,saws(manualandpowered)readyfora12hour stretchinthejarrahbushsouthofManjimup.
Allthishadabeginning whenamemberofthe parishconceivedabrilliant ideabywhichhethought fundscouldbequickly raisedforanewchurch, eversobadlyneeded.it cameaboutwhilemanyof thesameHolyNamemen werebusilyengagedinlay_ ingdownhardtenniscourts inthechurchgroundsthat Mr.CharlieFontaninivisualisedtheholdingofsports atFonty'sPool,ownedby hisfatherMr.A.Fontanini. ConfidinginhisbrotherMr. JoeFontaninitheideagainedsupportandafterfurther discussionwithJackGabbedyBillO'Brien,Bill Cornwall,Rev.Father DuffyandRegMonkhouse(whowasthen closelyassociatedwiththe organisationoftheR.S.L. EasterSportsfortwoyears) itwasdecidedtosoundout othermembersoftheparish andthiswasdoneonNovember21,1946.Three nightslaterintheofficeof the"Manjimup_Warren Times"everyonewas"sold' ontheideaanditwas thenthattheWarren AustraliaDaySportscommitteewasborn,forthe purposeofraisingmoneyforanewchurch.Atthat meetingW.G.Cornwalland W.O'Brien.wereappointed presidentandsecretaryrespectivelyexofficiomembers ofacommitteecomprisingF.Lilly,C.FontaniniJ. Gabbedy,J.Connelly,H. Winton,M.O'Sullivan,A. A.Dinneen,R.Monkhouse F.Young,J.Dinneen,J
inwhichaxemenfromall overtheStatecametocompeteforasingle12"underhandeventcarryingthe staggeringprizemoneyof £100.Historyhadbeen made,forthecommittee wentintothebushandfelledthetrees,sawedthe lengthsintocordsandfinallyshapedthemwitn machinelikeprecisioninto thefinestlogsthataxemen hadeverbeenaskedtocut. Eachyearsincethatfirst chop(whichJimDinneena oftheparishwon) thecommitteehaveduplibyR.Monkhouse catedthosearrangements andgonefromtriumphto triumphuntilnowin1952 theprizemoneyisthe richestinW.Australiaat £250plustrophies.Inconjunctionwiththatfirst choppingcontestaswimmingcarnivalwasheldand anewinterestwaskindled, somuchso,thatSouthFremantleclubmemberscame down havethenextyearand beencomingback everyyearsince. Someofthefoundation membersweresoonlostto theparishbutotherscame intofilltheranksandthe inclusionofastandingblock eventwidenedthescopeof thecarnival.Anewera wasusheredin1949when JackGabbedycamebackto Manjimupandtookover thehelmaspresident.He readilysawthedifficulties orrunningfurthersports undersuchprimitivecon-
ditionsandinoneofthe boldestsuggestionseverto comebeforethecommittee, suggestedthatthewireenclosurebescrappedandan earthmoundbebuilt.It wassovastinconception thathefoundithardto convertthescepticsand thatincludedMr.Fontanini snr.Buthewonandsoon heandMr.JackLalorwere takinglevelsandmaking plansfortheremovalof 1150cubicyardsofearth fromthepropertytoform themoundinthecentreof anaturalamphitheatre. Thisgigantictaskwasaccomplishedforthe1950 AustraliaDaysportswhich hadfurtherbeenenhanced bytheinclusionofa14" underhandChampionof Championeventinwhich the8leadingaxemenofthe Statewereinvitedtocompete,andtobeinvitedto Fonty'swasasignalhonour. Afurtherattractionwas theadditionofadouble handedsawingcontest,not seeninthedistrictfora decadeormore.
Therewasnothingtostop thesportsnowandfor1951 BillCornwall(afterwhom thecommitteehadseenfit tonametheprincipalevent) camebackfromWaroona forthedaytoseetheprogressandhelpwiththeday's arrangements.Inall94 axemenfromalloverW.A. competedforthe£230 cashand£120worthof trophiesand3,500patrons witnessedabrilliantspec- tacleofaxemanshipand FontaniniRev.Fr.Duffy; MesdamesG.Mellorand H.Winton(catering).In vernmentandPrivateCharity allthisthecommitteereceivedthe.blessingsofMr.GaveHappyChristmastoLepers A.Fontaniniandhisfamilywhosekindnessandco-ope_ rationmadethewholeundertakingpracticalbythe freeuseofthelovelypool andwellappointedgrounds fivemilesfromManjimup, oneoftheshowplacesof theState.
