Whathewantsistobe leftundisturbedwithhis materialpossessionsand,if hecanbedeludedinto thinkingthatCommunist dominationwillleavehim inthatposition,hewill makeabargainwithCommunisminhisheartrather thantakeastandforfreedomandsoriskthedestructionofthetwothingshe valuesmostinallthe world-hislifeandhis goods.

Inthecourseofthenext year,Dr.Taylorbecame acquaintedwithaneminent Catholicscientist.Ifscience didnotstopthismanfrom believinginCatholicism,he reasoned,theremustbe somethinginit.Hisnext stepwastoreadMonsignor Knox'sBeliefofCatholics andthenSt.Augustine's Confessions,whichhehad boughtmanyyearsbefore buthadputasideonhis bookshelf.
ThenonSt.Augustine's dayin1941,thoughhewas notawarethatitwasthe feastdayatthetime,Dr. Taylorsaysheheardavoice withinhimsay:"Whyare youwastingyourlife?"He gotintouchwithFather Bolland,aJesuitatWimbledon,althoughhehadto overcomeanenormousresistanceaboutgoingtohim. Onlybysheerwillpower,

Thereremainedtheconviction,however,thatthere wasmoreintheworldthan couldbetoldbyscience.He turnedtospiritism.The worksofWilliamBlake (poetandmystic,nota Catholic)hadwhathecalls thegreatestandbestinfluenceuponhimatthis time.HealsostudiedTheosophy,theworksofHume, alchemy,PlatoandtheNeoPlatonists,andturnedfora timetoBuddhism,which madeadeepimpression uponhim,butprovedtobe ablindalley.Itwasfinally intheCatholicChurchthat hissearchcametoanend.

I.Christmasisareligious feast.Aboveallelseitisthe celebrationofthebirthof theIncarnateWord.,This eventisthefoundationfor thegaiety,theexchangeof gifts,theexchangeofgreetings.Inpreparingforthese things,peopleareoften drawnintoaspirallingex- penditureof Christmasnervousenergy. becomesnota climax,butananti-climax topeoplejadedandovertired.Forthousandsthe rejoicingandthecausefor rejoicingarenolongerassociated,astheyoncewere, inpeople'sminds.
II.Oftenthecentralfact ofChristmasisindicated, butcheaplyandsentimentally."Andsuddenlythere waswiththeangel,amultitudeoftheheavenlyarmy, praisingGodandsaying, 'GlorytoGodinthehighest;andonearthpeaceto menofgood-will.'"One Perthstorehasrendered thisbyfourglamourised andfeminizedangels,completewithmake-up,accompaniedbydubiouslyappropriatemusic.

IthinkCatholics,for whomChristIStheIncarnateWord,mightwellask themselvesatwhatpoint theyshouldresistthepaganizationofafeast,thereal memoryofwhichisbecomingincreasinglyobscureto theincreasinglynumerous "post-Christians"amongst whomwelive.Themajority,nottheminority, colourtheenvironment.We mightwellbemoreselfcriticalofouracceptanceof alienhabits.
