TheannouncementdedicatingthelastSundayofthe ,year1951tothispurpose cameinalettersenttoall Bishopsofthiscountryby ArchbishopFrancisP. KeoughofBaltimore,

ChairmanoftheAdministrativeBoard,National CatholicWelfareConference.

TheArchbishop'sletter referredtothefactthat Sunday,December30,isthe dayafterthefeastcommemoratingthemartyrdomof St.ThomasaBecket,ArchbishopofCanterbury,who wasmurderedinhisCathedralin1170becausehehad resistedHenryII'sinterferenceinecclesiasticalmatters,andwascanonized threeyearslater.

4. HisEminenceFrancisCardinalSpellman,ArchliishopofNewYork,interrupteda 12-year-oldNewYorktraditioninaccepting aninvitationtospendChristmaswiththe troopsinKorea.

Therearealargenumber ofpeopleinthiscountry whoseeCommunismasan evil,notbecauseitisbasicallyinhuman,butsimply becauseitiscruel.

Itwillbeworthourwhile tostudytheirmentality,to examinetheirwayoflookingatthings.

Toagreaterorlessdegree theiroutlookismaterialistic.BythatImeanthat thefactofGod'sexistence isofverysmallsignificance intheirdailylives.

Ifyouaskedthem whethertheybelievein God,theywouldprobably saytheydid.Ifyouwent ontoasktheinwhether God'sexistencemeantanythingtothem,thehonest oneswouldadmitthatit meantverylittleor,infact, nothingatall.

Consequentlywhatyou andIcallthespiritualside ofthings,thevaluesthat flowfrombeliefinGod,is ofverylittleaccountin theirlives.Thustheydrift forthemostpartupontheir ownunchartered'course, whichmeans,inninecases outoften,thattheywant thepleasuresoflifewithoutitsresponsibilities.

Forthemwhatremains oftheChristianheritage survivesasconventionto taketheedgeofftheirpaganmaterialism,whilst failingtoconcealtheirincreasingandexcessivepreoccupationwiththematerialsideoflifetothedetrimentofthatwhichisspiritual.

Somuchsothattheyare farlesswillingthantheir fathersweretosacrifice theirlivesortheirearthly possessionsforthesakeof somethingcalledfreedom whosevaluetheirmaterial-

Forfreedomisaspiritual good.Tobepreservedit mustbevaluedaccordingly, whichmeans,quitesimply, thatnomaterial'sacrifice, notevendeathitself,must beconsideredtoogreat whenmadeinitsdefence.

Thatiswhatismeantby thosewhosaythatto-day, inthestruggleagainstCommunism,onlyaspirituay motivewilldo.

Yettheverythingthe materialistlacks,precisely becauseheisamaterialist, isaspiritualmotive.

Whathewantsistobe leftundisturbedwithhis materialpossessionsand,if hecanbedeludedinto thinkingthatCommunist dominationwillleavehim inthatposition,hewill makeabargainwithCommunisminhisheartrather thantakeastandforfreedomandsoriskthedestructionofthetwothingshe valuesmostinallthe world-hislifeandhis goods.

Andhewillbethemore easilydeludedbecausehis materialistphilosophywill causehimtoseecruelty aloneastheessentialevil ofCommunism;itsessential inhumanityisalreadypart ofhisoutlook-impliedin hisowndisregardforGod andhisforgetfulnessof Christianvalues.

Thus,inthepresentstrugglebetweenCatholicism andCommunism,theallegianceofthematerialistis,to saytheleast,athingof doubtfulvalue.

Theneedforustounderstandandpromulgate theCatholicidealis correspondinglyincreased. Thereislittletimetolose.

II.Oftenthecentralfact ofChristmasisindicated, butcheaplyandsentimentally."Andsuddenlythere waswiththeangel,amultitudeoftheheavenlyarmy, praisingGodandsaying, 'GlorytoGodinthehighest;andonearthpeaceto menofgood-will.'"One Perthstorehasrendered thisbyfourglamourised andfeminizedangels,completewithmake-up,accompaniedbydubiouslyappropriatemusic.
