JoeHolohan,of55Hampshirestreet,VictoriaPork,proudlywearstheIrishServiceMedalrecentlyawardedhimbythe PresidentofIrelandforhispartinthestruggleforIrishfreedom, 1920-21.ItisbelievedthatthemedalistheonlyoneinWesternAustralia.

Coincidentallywiththe newsofthefirstdayofthe Japanesepeacetreatythere reachedmydesktheAug.4 issueofMilts'Cattolica, publishedatRome.oneof themostauthoritativepublicationsoftheCatholic world.Aparticularlytimely articlewastitled"War, BankruptcyofHumanity." Itgaveawell-documented reviewofthelossescaused bywarinalldepartments forallcountries.Hereare someexamples:

Germanyduring19391945suffereddestruction andlossesgreaterthanin alltherestofher2,000 years'history.Conservative estimatesplacethenumber ofherdeadaQdmissingat 6,000,000.Russiasacrificed 17,000,000.Japansuffered therelativelyminorlosses of554,349soldierskilledand wounded,but8,000.000of hercivilianswerekilled, injured,orotherwisesufferedbyairattack.German soldiers,infact,freelyadmittedthatfront-line combatwasmuchmore tolerablethantheincessant airalarmsandcarpetingof thelargecitieswithbombs. ThisisaboutKorea.Andaboutyou.Without_rhetoric,melodrama,orfancyphrases,itwould begoodtoconsiderforaminutethatinlittlemore thanayearandahalfthousandsofourneighbours, ofoursons,orourfathershavegoneaway,rather quietly,toKorea,andmany,manyofthemwill nevercomeback.

BeingmortalNyeforget.Beinglazywedonot exerciseourimaginations;weletthedailynewspapersdothatforus.Andifwedonothavefeatures,articlesandpicturestoconjureWith,wequietlyforgetaboutthehellthatisKorea.

NewsfromtheKoreanfrontisoftenburiedwell insidethepaper.Thewarisnotapopularoneyet, aspeoplehavenotstartedclamouringfornewsand morenewsofjustwhatishappeningoverthere. Those\Nlo-havetheirlovedonesfarawayjustsit andsufferinsilenceandseethepartplayedforthe securityoftheworldbytheirmenfolkoustedby newsoftheTestsortheDaviscupmatches.

Littleparagraphsoftentellastorymuchbetter thancolumnsandcolumnsoftype,anditwasa littleparagraphtuckedwellawayamidotherstories thatmentionedthatanAmericancommandersaid thatinonemonthalonesome58,000Communists werekilled.

Now,thepointisclear:Thereisplentyof fightinginKoreaittakesmentokillmen,andifin oneshortmonthenemycasualtiesweresoheavy,we mustrealisethatoursmusthavebeenheavy,too.

Isitrightthatjustbecauseafrontisseveral thousandmilesaway,thatweshouldforgetthemen whoaredying-inpoolsofblood,notonlyforthe causeofworldpeace,butalsoforus?Manyofthese menhavebeenincombatforalongtime.Theyare tired.notonlyphysicallybutmentally.TheywonderNyhytheyhavebeenforgotten.Theydonot getmanyletters.Theyjustexistandwant.tosee nomoreofdeath.

ThewifeofanAmericanservicemanwrote thesewordstoFatherDanielLord,S.J.,recently: "Thosemenaregoingthroughhell,andnoone seemstocare.Wewouldprefernottoberemindedofthehorriblefacts.Imaywanttoomuch,ask toomuch,buttellme:Aretheyprayingforthemen inKoreaintheparishMassesinyourcity?They -don'tinthebigtownwhereIlive.Theyarenever evenmentioned.ItisasifKoreadidnotexist,and therewasnowargoingoninwhichourmenare beingkilledandwounded.

Thedestructionofthe famedancientlibraryof AlexandriabyOmarpales whenwereadofthesefigures:For14largelibraries, 3,000,000volumeslost;for theNationalLibraryof Hamburg,600,000volumes destroyed;forthelibraryof theUniversityofMuenster, 400,000volumesand500.000 dissertationsruined,includmgallitspreciousmedieval codices;ofthe1,649archives ofItaly,onlyafifthcame offunscathed.Howmuch historythatcouldhavebeen writtenwillnotnowappear becauseofthewar!

Thereusedtobeatime whenthemerecataloguing oftheevilsofwarwas thoughteffectivepeacepro- paganda;wehaveseennone ofitin15 thoughtyears.Butthe ofthisholocaust canmakemoreinstantthis truth:Ifwewantpeacewe mustturntoGodinprayer andpenance.Wenotethat theJapanesepeaceconferencewasopenedwitha mealy-mouthedcallfora momentof"prayerormeditation."

Itwouldhavecorrespondedwiththeneedsof thathouriftheparticipants inthetreatyhadproclaimed thedayoneof"solemnhumiliation,fasting,and prayer."to"seekrepentanceandreformation" "throughtheRedeemerof theWorld,"tousethe wordsofJohnAdamsin hisPresidentialaddress.
