"Wehavebornepatientlyforthepast16yearsconditionswhichduringthe warwereundoubtedlyunavoidable,butwhicharenowbecomingintolerable. Isincerelyhopethattheofficialattitudeonthesematterswillimprbve,and thatthisimprovementwillnotbeentirelyunaffectedbytheopinionsofa verylargesectionofthevotingpublic,"saidtheMostRev.L.J.Goody,AuxiliaryBishoptoHisGrace,attheannualdistributionofprizesatSt.Louis' school,Claremont,lastnight.

BishopGoodysaidthat theattitudeofgovernment bodiesconcernedwiththe housingquestion"reflected littlecreditonagovernmentwhichhashadsix yearstomakeitsplansand carrythemout."

AfterhavingcongratulatedthestudentsofSt.Lcuis ontheirremarkableconcert,theBishopwentonto say:

"TheJesuitFathersare tobecongratulatedonhavingcompletedrecentlyadditionstotheirschoolaccommodation. Congratulatedparticularlyonhaving beenabletoovercomeafter threeyearsoffrustration somanydifficulties,someof themgreatlymagnifiedby theattitudeoftheHousing Commission.Awordhere, Ithink,isoverdueabout thegreatdifficultieswhich surroundanyattemptto erectschoolsandchurches. Noonedeniesthatthereis agreatshortageofbuilding materials,buteventhis basicexcuseuseduniversallyintherefusingorrepeateddefermentofbuildingpermitsreflectslittle creditonagovernment whichhashadsixyearsto makeitsplansandcarry themout.

Bythegraciousconsiderationofthe Archbishop,theconsecrationoftheLoreto ConventchapelwasperformedbytheAuxiliaryBishop,MostRev.Dr.L.J.Goody, Dec.1,inordertocoincidewiththeyearof theconvent'sgoldenjubilee.

Thepreviousdaythe altarhadbeenstrippedand thebenchesandthepriedieuxremoved,sothatthe chapelstoodbareand,asit were,expectantofthemorrow'ssolemnity.

Theceremonycommenceedat6.45a.m.Alarge numberofpriestsandseminariansassistedBishop Goodyastheliturgybegan outsidethechapel.Inside, asolitarypriestremained asguardian.

Threetimesaroundthe wallstheBishopwalked, sprinklingthemwithholy wateratdifferentlevels.

Accompaniedbythedeaconandsub-deacon,beginningatthelefthand corner,theBishoptracedin theashes,atregularintervals,thelettersofthe Greekalphabet,endingat thesanctuary.Thenina similarmannerhetraced theLatinalphabet.

TheGreeklettersare symbolicoftheJewswho firstenteredtheChurch, andtheLatintheGentiles. Beneaththissymbolismit wouldseemthattheashes pointtothepassingaway oftheolddispensation-the Jewishlaw-and,thesecularcivilisationofGreece andRome,andfromtheir ashesarisestheoneliving andtrueChurch.

Thenfollowedtheblessingofevery'partoftheinteriorofthechapel-floor,walls,doors.Nextthemost significantofalltheactions,theconsecrationofthe altar,tookplace.

Duringthewholeofthe longceremonythepriest thuriferwalkedcontinually roundthealtarincensingas hewent.

Whentheconsecration wasoverandthealtar stonewithitssepulchre wasready,aprocessionwas formedtobeartherelics fromthetemporarytabernacletothealtar.

Headedbythecross-bearer,acolytes,andthurifers, inredcassocksandsurplice,four,scarletvested priestsbort,therelicsona bier,followedbytheBishop,thechoirs,andthe people,acontinualchant beingkeptupduringthe

procession.Therelicswere thensealedin Graduallythesepulchre thealtarwas reclothed,andwiththesolemncelebrationofHoly Mass-thepeakpointofthe whole,longceremony,lastingfornearlyfourhours, wasbroughttoan.end.

Duringthepastfewmonthsthroughoutthe Archdioceseworkhasbeenstartedonnumerous schoolsandchurches.additionshavebeenplanned toothers,andtheminutethatbuildingrestrictions areliftedandmaterialsbecomeavailable,therewill beaconcerteddrivethroughmanyparishestoerect morebuildingstothehonourandgloryofGodand fortheeducationofour.Catholicchildren.

Inthesenewchurchesandschools,futuregen- erationswillseetheevidenceofthefaithofour pebpleofthisageandthesacrificesmadebytheir parentsfortheireducationinatrueChristianspirit. Inspiteoftheravishingattacksonfaithandmorals,ourgoodCatholicpeoplearestilllivingbythefaith impartedtothematbaptism.Aswestudythemas- terfulcathedralsofEuropeandrealiseatwhat greatpersonalcostandworktheywereerectedcenturiesago,duringthegoldenageoffaith,weofthis ageshouldfindachallengetodoevenmore.These magnificentBasilicaswerebuiltwithoutmodern steel,withoutderricksandmodernmachinerythat makebuildingmucheasier.Theywerenotgiven overtoacontractor,butwerebuiltbythehands andbrawnoftheCatholicpeopleofthoselittlecommunities.ThroughoutCatholicEuropethesegiant. structuresofbeautyaresituatedinthesmallest hamletsandruralplacesaswellasinthecities.The financialburdenmusthavebeenterrific.Inthe faceofsuchsacrificewhatwearedoingto-day,in thiseraofplenty,iscomparativelynegligible.

Itisacommonsightthesedaystoseeyoung couplesspendingtheirweekendsworkingontheir futurehomes,clearingtheirblockofscrubandtimber,andassistingeachotherinlayingfoundations andmixingcementbricks.Althoughitismuch easiertoputthewholematterinthehandsofacontractorandjustwalkintoafinishedhouse,ahouse willmeanmuchmoretothosewho,Saturdayafter Saturday,haveforegonepleasuretripsandbeachoutingstobuildtheirownlittleresidence.Their homewillnotbeamerehouse,itwillbepartof themselves,andeventhoughitmaylacksomeofthe polishofaprofessionallybuiltstructure,itwillhave somethingthatnootherhousecouldpossiblyhave -asoul,anexpressionofthatlovewhichprompted themtosacrificeeverythingelsesothattheycould haveahomeoftheirown.Attachmenttoathins isinproportiontotheeffortspentinacquiringit, andwemaybesurethattheseyoungpeoplewill lovetheirlittleplacewithaloveandtendernessnot experiencedbythosewhocanaffordtopaythepre- sentfantasticpricesfora"tailormade"job.

Thisspiritisalsobeingmanifestedthroughout severalparisheswhereparishionersaremeetingthe inflatedcostoflivingbyrollinguptheirsleeves insteadofpassingoutraffleticketsandrunning bazaars.WemayquotethepeopleofRivervale, whoarebuildingtheirownschoolfurniture,the Spearwoodfolkwhoaregradingandbeautifyingthe schoolgrounds,thepeopleofEastbrookandPembertonwhohopetohaveaconvent,aschool,anda presbyteryreadyforoccupancyearlynextyear.In allthesecasestheyareforgingunbreakablebonds betweenthemselvesandtheirparish-bondsthat couldneverbeforgedbymeredonationsofmoney.

ThecathedralsofEuropewerebuiltbythe tradesmenofthevillage,bytheirwivesandthechildreninonegiantcommunityeffort.Thatiswhy to-daytheyremainathingofbeautyandanexampletoourmodernage.Parishsocialfunctions, dances,concertsandrafflesareallgoodanduseful, buttheylacksomethingwhichisvitallyimportant -theylackthecommoneffort,theparticipationof ALLtheparish.Theexpression"BusyBee"has, thesedays,lostsomethingofitsrealsignificance, andtoooftenresolvesitselfintoatinygroupof menwhohavebeencajoledor"blackmailed"into givingupaSaturdayafternoonfora"goodcause" ratherthanajointeffortofalltheparishfortheir commonhome.Godwillbringgoodoutofevil and,whoknows,perhapsthepresentbuildingimpassecouldmeanarevivalofthatancientparish communaleffortwhichwillleadmentorealisethat theparishinstitutionsateasmuchtheirsastheir ownhearth.

WecongratulateallthepeopleofthosecommunitieswhohaveandwhoarebuildingforChrist. Theirsisamonumentwhichislasting,thatreaches skywardtothethresholdsofeternity.Others buildbuildingsfortime,butyouarebuildingfor eternity.

JohannesJoergensen,Danishauthor-convert,states simplywhyhebecamea Catholic."Itwasfortwo reasons:First,theRoman Churchhasexistedfrom thebeginning second,it hasalwaysbeenpersecuted."Whatimpressedhim mostdeeplywasthatthe subjectionoftheChurch anditsmemberstopersecutioninallperiodsofthe world'shistoryspringsfundamentallyfromitsidenti-

hisschoolmates.This,addedtohishomesickness,was thebeginningofarebelliousandpessimisticviewof lifethateventuallyledhim intoradicalcompany.

Duringandfollowinghis universitydays,largelyundertheinfluenceofthe GermanphilosopherHaeckel,Joergensendriftedinto dispiritingatheism.Inthe meantime,however,hebecameanewspapermanof renown,firstinCopenhagen andtheninParisandBerlin.Hisfirstbook,avolumeofpoetry,appearedin 1887,andin1893hebecame editorofthe"Tower,"areviewofliteratureandart.
