ShortlyafterwardsMajorGeneralGarrett,O.C. WesternCommand,arrived toinspecttheUnit.Hecarriedouthisinspection;the
cadetsthenmarchedaround thecollegeandtheMajor Generaltookthesalutein themarching_outceremony.
TheladsoftheClontarf band,whowererestingon theirlaurelsandtheirinstrumentsafterhavingplayedforthemarchingdisplays.receivedarather suddenshockwhenthey foundthattheytoowereto beinspectedbyGeneral Garrett.Thegeneralpas_ sedamongtheladsand congratulatedthemontheir playing.
Theofficialpartythen proceededtoaspecially preparedplatformoverlookingthenewoval.His LordshipDr.Goodyaftera shortopeningaddressby Mr.GeoffWorner,president oftheOldBoysassociation,
blessedanddeclared,open theMemorialoval.
Hewentontoremindhis hearersofthespiritwhich inspiredtheerectionofthe ovalandthen,recallingto mindthewordsofJudas Machabeus-"Itisaholy andwholesomethoughtto prayforthedeadthatthey maybeloosedfromtheir sins,"askedallpresentto usewithprofitthetwominutessilenceforthedeceasedoftwowars.
Mr.Wornersaidthatthe excavatingandpreparing theovalwouldcosttheOld Aquiniansabout£2,500.Of thisamount,morethan £600(includingadonation of£200fromMr.Jim Walsh)wasalreadyin handandheappealedto theOldBoystocontribute tothefund.Theovalwas subdividedintolotswhich theywere"selling"at£1 each.Hesaidthatheregrettedthefactthatalthoughmorethan1,200boys hadpassedthroughthecollege,only170werefinancialmembersoftheassociation.Ifalltheex-stu_ dentscontributed,theassociationwouldsoonhave theovalpaidoffandwork couldcommenceonthe dressingshedsandgrandstand.
Rev.Br.Murphythen spoke,thankingHisLordshipforhispresence;and wentontopraisethework ofthosedevotedOldAquinianswhoseenthusiasm hadmadepossiblethis work.
Hisspeechwasfollowed bythatoftheRev.G. O'Callaghan,anOldAqui- nianandachaplaininthe recentwar.
Abriefrecessforafternoonteafollowedand thenallreturnedtothe MemorialovalforSpecialistSquaddemonstrations. Equipmentusedincluded brenguns,E.Y.rifles, Vickers,six-poundersand mortars.
Thedemonstrationstook theformofcompetitions betweencrewsofthetwo companysoftheUnit.As thedisplayproceeded,Sgt. MajorArndtexplainedover thepublicaddresssystem thefunctionofthevarious weaponsandtheiruseby theCadets.
