Twoofthemajorpro-ArchdiocesethroughthethanktheHolyFatherwho, blemsfacingtheChurchatGovernmentmigrationthroughtherecommendathemomentwerethoseschemeandthedriftfromtionoftheArchbishopand connectedwiththeincreasethecountrytothecity.Thistheconcomitanceofthe ofCatholicsarrivingintheseriousdriftcouldbehalt-ApostolicDelegate,had

conferredthishonour upon him.

BishopGoodypaidaspecialtributetotheRev. R.Pace,who,"35years ago,receivedmyfather, mother,sister,andmyself intotheChurchandwho, bymerestcoincidence,14 yearslater,assistedmeat myfirstMass.""Atthat Mass,"herecalled,"the deaconwhobaptisedmein theChurchofEnglandand whowasthenastudentfor thepriesthoodattheBeda college,wasalsopresent."

Tributewasalsopaidthe Rev.R.Kelly,whowas MasterofCeremoniesfor theconsecration,whichwas carriedout"aswellandas orderlyasanyonepresenthadeverseen."

Ahighlightoftheconsecrationceremonywasthe verylarge'numberof priestswhoattended.The 120clergycomprisedpriests oftheArchdiocesefrom cityandcountry,allthe ReligiousOrders,diocesan priestsandmonksfromthe AbbeyNulliusofNewNor_ cia,andpriestsfromthe DioceseofGeraldton.PallottineFatherspresentrepresentedtheVicariateof Kimberley.

Religiouscongregationsof Brothersandnunswere alsocomprehensivelyrepresented.

SuperlativeMusic

Thesacredmusicatthe ceremonyofconsecration andatPontificalBenedictionwastrulymemorable. OnotherimportantoccasionsSt.Mary'sboys'choir haveacquittedthemselves creditably,buttheirsinging atBishopGoody'sconse-crationwassuperlatively good.

ATHRILLINGMOMENT,givento ewmothers,wasMrs.Goody's,whenshe nelttoreceivethefirstepiscopalblessing ivenbyhersonafterhisconsecration.

Averylargecongrega-andtheRev.J.Dunnewere tionfilledSt.Mary',includ-theassistantministerswith ingmanypriestsfromtheHis Lordship Bishop countryareas. Goody.

HisGracewasassistedatDevotionscommencedwith thethronebytheRt.Rev.therecitationoftheLitany Mgr.E.Kennedy,V.G.,andoftheSaints,ledbyDr. theRt.Rev.Mgr.J.Han-Sullivan.Thenfollowed nan.TheRev.E.SullivanthesermonbytheRev.H.

BishopGoodygaveabrie addressinwhichhethankedallfortheirkindnessto himandforthemanysigns ofaffectionhehadreceived inthepastfewweeks.

DuringBenedictionBishop GoodyintonedtheTe Deum,andatitsconclusion theHallelujahChoruswas sung.Theceremoniesflowedverysmoothlyunder thedirectionoftheRev.R. Kelly.

TheCathedralgrounds hadbeenfloodlittoenable thenewBishoptomeetthe people.Agreatcrowd availedoftheopportunity.

Visitingprelatesand clergy,itissaid,wereim_ pressedparticularlybythe choir'srenditionofDr. EdgarFord's"EcceSacerdos"and"TeDeum."The five-part"0Salutaris,"by WilliamByrd,wasapar- ticulardelight,andthe HallelujahChoruswasimpressivebeyondwords.

TheRev.A.E.Lynch trainedtheboysandmen, andconductedthroughout theceremonies.

ColourfulBroadcast

ManyCatholicsinthe cityandthousandsofcountrypeoplewhocouldnot bepresentattheconsecra_ tion.weregratefultothe Rt.Rev.Mgr.J.T.McMahonforhissimple,colourfuldescriptionofthe ceremonyasitprogressed inSt.Mary'sCathedral. Theentireceremonywas recordedbytheNational Station,andwasplayed overtheaironSunday morning.Manyweredisappointedthattheevening functionwasnotalso broadcast.

AnnouncingthecommencementofaspecialnovenainSt.Mary'sCathedral,Friday,Nov.30,the Rev.J.Hogansaidthedevotionwouldbeinhonour ofOurLadyofFatimaand theMiraculousMedal.It wouldalsobeafittingpreparationfortheFeastofthe ImmaculateConception(on whichdayitended).This wasthetitularfeastofthe Cathedral.

FatherHogandrewattentiontoaconnectinglink betweendevotiontoOur LadyofFatimaanddevotiontotheMiraculous Medal.OurLadyinher apparitionsinPortugalin 1917hadstressedtheidea ofdevotiontoherImmaculateHeart.Thereverseof theMiraculousmedal,revealedyearsbefore,bore theimprintoftheImmaculateHeart.

Sincetheobjectsofthe novenawereworldpeace andthespiritualandmaterialwelfareofparticipants,saidFatherHogan, allCatholicswereinvited totakepart.Manyfavourshadbeenreceivedasa resultofthenovenalast year.

ThethirteenthFederalconferenceofCatholicwomen'sorganisationswasbroughttoacloseonSundaymorningwhen150 interstateandlocaldelegatesreceivedCommunioninabodyat the8o'clockMassinSt.Mary'sCathedral,andwerelaterentertainedataCommunionbreakfastintheVictoriaSquareconvent.

Itwasthefirsttimethat theFederalconferencewas 4 heldinWesternAustralia. DelegatesfromfiveStates werepresentatthebusiness sessions,whichwereheld fromTuesday,Oct.30,to Friday,Nov.2.

Socialeventsarranged forthedelegatesincludeda musicalreceptioninthe Y.A.L.hall,aluncheonat Overtonlodge,Cottesloe, andaluncheonintheKing Edwardhotel.Manyof theinterstatedelegatesvisistedCatholicinstitutions duringtheirvisithere,and expressedadmirationfor 'theworkbeingdoneby Brothersandthenuns.

Delegatesoccupiedthe frontpewsintheCathedral attheSolemnMassonthe feastofChristtheKing, andweretakenbylaunch toAquinascollegeforthe annualEucharisticprocession.Specialplaceswere alsoreservedforthemat theconsecrationofthe MostRev.L.J.Goody.

Parents'Disinterest

Dealingwithallaspects ofCatholiceducation,the conferencewasopenedby BishopGoody.Thepaper on"VocationalGuidancein CivilLife,"readbytheVictoriandelegate,revealed thealarminglackofinterestofmanyparentsintheir children'svocationinlife. Thedelegatequotedtheinstanceofoneschoolwhere onlynineoutofsome300 parentsrespondedtoaninvitationbyeducationauthoritiestodiscusstheir children'sfuturecareers.

Thewomengave"reluctantapproval"totheideaof kindergartens.Manymarriedwomenwereworking outsidethehomesto-day,it wasdisclosed,andthus kindergartenswerenecessarytocareforthechildren.Itwasimportant, theconferencefound,that Caholickindergartensbe fosteredtocarefortheCatholicchildren.

TheRev.J.Bourke,archdiocesan inspector of schools,statedinhispaper on"TheNationalOutlook onEducation,"thattheidea ofCatholiccitizenship shouldbestressedinour schools.Catholicsshould bepreparedtotakeofficein civicorganisations.andthe nationaloutlookshouldreplacetheparochialoutlook sooftenfoundinCatholic organisations.

man'sfacultiesandby meansofarts,sciences,and literature,makeacitizen worthyofthecityofman andthecityofGod.Miss Merrickisanarchitect whograduatedfromthe Sydneyuniversitywiththe Sulmanprize,andwhothis yearfinishesherphilosophy courseattheAquinasacademy.

ApaperfromSouthAustralia,"HomeLifeandPreschoolEducation,"stated thatmothersshouldbeeducatedintheprinciplesof pre-schooltraining,andit wasadvocatedthatas mothersattendinfantwelfareclinicstolearnhowto careforthephysicalneeds oftheirchildren,soalso thermshouldbe"clinics" wheretheycouldlearnthe bestwaysofrearingtheir children.

IntermediateGroup

TheRt.Rev.Msgr.J.T. McMahonquotedexamples ofWestAustraliangirls whohadachievedinternationalrecognitionafter havinggraduatedfromthe University,andurgedthe conferencetopressforthe appointmentofwomento theUniversitySenate.

Theconferenceresolved thattheCatholicWomen's woulddoallinitspowerto fosterandspreadcoursesin domestictrainingandtechnicaleducationinCatholic schools,andpromisedits helptoanyschoolthat wasdesirousofstarting suchcourses.Dressmaking,simplehomenursing, andhouseholdmanagement shouldbetaughtinallCatholicschools,delegates stated.

Asaresultoftalksbythe VeryRev.E.Sullivanand MissThelmaMurray,on theworkoftheYouth movements,aspecialgroup maybestartedtocaterfor whatseveralwomencalled the"lostlegion,"orwomen who"weretoooldforthe N.C.G.M.andyetfoundthe CatholicWomen'sleague toooldforthem."Itwas statedthatmanywomen wouldliketobelongtothe C.W.L.,butfounditimpossibletoattendtheafternoonmeetings.Anintermediategroupwithitsown groupleaderaffiliatedwith theC.W.L.wouldsolvethis problem,itwassaid.

Parents&Vocations

Itwasashame,Mrs.C. Smith,generalsecretaryof theW.A.C.W.L.,said,that theexcellentmusicaleducationgiveninourCatholic schoolsshouldsooftenbe discontinuedimmediately thechildrenleftschool.A choirandmusiccirclein eachparishwouldensure thattheirmusicaleducawouldmeanthatevery parishwouldhaveagood choirandparishorchestra forallfunctions.

Manymigrantsarevery shy,saidtheRev.C.Stinson,inhistalkon"CatholicMigration."Theyneed afriendlyhand,butwarnedthedelegatesagainst adopting"apatronisingattitudetothem."

WhatChildrenRead

EveryCatholicschool;especiallycountryschools, shouldhaveagoodlibrary, itwasstated.Branchesof theC.W.L.wouldassist parishesinestablishinglibrariesforthechildren. Theselibrarieswouldbe mosthelpfulduringthe schoolholidays,itwas pointedout. Although membersdidnotobjectto childrenreadingcomics, theyfeltthatthistypeof readingshouldbebalanced withgoodbooks.Itwas gettingserious,theysaid, whenmanyadultsread nothingbutcomics,and pointedoutthatyouthsare amongthemostardentof comic-readers.

Wehavealwaysbelieved intellingourchildrenthe factsofsexassoonasthey showedanyinterest,andtellingthemasmuchasthey caredtoknowatthatparticulartime.

When,attheageof4,5or 6(itvarieswiththechild) theyaskedtheprimary question,"Wheredobabies comefrom?"wetoldthem simply,"Fromthemother's body."

Thatwasusuallyenough forthetimebeing.Months wouldpass,thenthesame question,thesameanswer.

"Oh,yes,Iremember now-butwhere?"

Afrankanswertothat andtheyfeltquiteknowing -andwereabletospotpopulationtrendsintheneighbourhood.Ataboutthis stagewewouldhaveaprivatetalk,describingthemiracleofbirth.

Wehavefoundthatsex knowledgeshouldbeacquiredgradually.Someparents trytogiveachildonetalk withthewholeworksincluded-usuallyatthefirst where-do-babies-come-from query.Itcan'tbedone.We knowbecausewe'vetriedit. ligion.ThePrincessGallitzinwaspersuadedbya leaderintheso-calledEnlightenment,Diderot,to devoteherfulltimetothe educationofherchildren, MitriandhissisterMarianne.Shetookthemto Muenster,Germany,famous foreducation,andthere theycameundertheinfluenceoftheBaronFranz vonFurstenberg,afine Catholicgentleman.Hewas piousandlearned,andhe andsomepriestsrecalled thePrincesstoreligion.

In1786onAug.28,the FeastofSt.Augustine,she approachedthesacraments forthefirsttimesinceher childhood.Agreatzealand earnestnessnowfilledher lifeasaCatholic,andshe headedarevivalofreligion amongthenobility.Her childrenbecameCatholics thefollowingyear,and wereconfirmedonTrinity Sunday.1787.withMitri takingthenameAugustine.

Neverbeforeinthe2,000 yearsofherhistoryhasthe Churchbeenfacedwitha crisisofsuchmagnitudeas that confronting her throughoutthewholeworld to-day.

Neverinthepasthasshe hadtosuffertheruthless, savage,andscientificpersecutionthatiscrucifying somanymillionsofher childrenevenasIspeak.

Perhapsneverbefore, throughallhervicissitudes, hastheChurchfacedthe futurewithsuchmixed )feelingsoftrepidationand ofhone.

Oftrepidation,because sheseesthe.appallingruin ofsoulsthatfollowsinthe wakeofmilitantatheismas itsengulfingtidesweeps EastandWestandSouth fromthetombofLeninin thenorth,untilto-daythis evilscourgehasoverrun one-thirdoftheglobe.

Onlyafewmonthsagothe HolyFatherwrotetothe Bishopsoftheworld:"You arewellawarethatalmost thewholehumanraceis allowingitselftobedriven 'intotwoopposingcamps: forChristandagainst Christ.Thehumanraceis involvedinasupremecrisis whichwillissueeitherin itssalvationbyChrist-or initsutterdestruction."

Hespeaksofa"titantic strugglebetweenthetwo forcesnowcompetingfor themasteryoftheworld,' andweknowhereinthis landofourswhatdeepinroadstheforcesofevilhave alreadymadeinourmidst.

Littlewonder,then,that .1 theshepherdswhomGod

hasgivenustoleadand defendusthroughthe troubloustimesthatlie aheadhaveissuedsuchan urgentnoteofwarningto theChurchandthenation asthatcontainedintherecentstatement,authorised bytheBishopsofAustralia,onthefutureofthis Commonwealth.

Littlewonderthatthose amongstourpeoplewhosee the"ManeThecelPhares' onthewall,cannotbut sharethistrepidationof whichIspeak,andwhich seizestheheartofevery manwholoveshisGodand hisfellowman.

But,thankGod,the Churchlooksintothefuture,too,withabuoyant, thrillinghope.Sheremembersthepromiseofher Saviourthatthegatesof hellwillneverprevail

againsther,andthatHe willbewithhertilltheend oftime.WithJesusand inJesus,sheiseverconsciousofherstrength.

AstheHolyFatherhas said:"Thebitterexperiencesofwar,thedisappointmentswhichhavesucceededit,anoutlookwhichoffersbutlittlehope-all this,itistrue,meansthat theChurchhastoperform hertaskinthefaceofan everincreasingnumberof humanbeingswhommiseryandunhappinesshave exhausted,enfeebled,and discouraged.

"Butthereisnoreason forbeingdismayedordisheartened,orforlosing sightoftherealsituationas awhole.Andsoweshall nevertireofsayingtoour children,andtoallwho sharetheirsentiments. Takecourage-beofgood heart.Youarenumerous, morenumerousthanwould appeal',whileothershave tolenddeceptivestrength totheirranksbyboastsand imposture.Youarepowerful,morepowerfulthan youropponents. TheMonsignor,recently returnedfromaninspection tourofEurope,declared thatunlesstheplightof 15,000,000isalleviated,all oftheEconomicCo-operationAdministration(ECA) andMarshalPlanfunds canbeexpended,andthere stillwillbenosoundeconomyinEurope. ArrivingatRockinghamBay(northof Townsville)inMay,1848,Kennedy'sparty, aftermuchprivationandtoil,reachedthePascoe River,wheretheyestablishedadepot.

Kennedy,withfourothers,Costigan,Dunn, Luff,andanative,JackyJacky,leftthisdepot inanendeavourtoreachCapeYork,wherea reliefshipwasexpected.

ThenativealonesurvivedtoreachCapeYork, havingbeenwoundedinaskirmishwith treacherousblacks,whenKennedywaskilled. JackyJackyguidedtheship'sreliefparty whichrescuedthemenatthePascoeDepot,but Costigan,DunnandLuffhadperished.
