Youareprivilegedtoassistthismorningatoneof thegreatandsolemnceremoniesoftheChurch.The consecrationofaBishop takesplaceduringtheHoly SacrificeoftheMass,which isofferedbyboththeconsecratingPrelateandthe Bishop-elect.Forthispurposeyouwillhavenoticed thataseparatealtarwas erectedfortheBishop-elect neartheHighAltar.As wellastheconsecrating Prelate,HisLordshipBishopGummer,therearetwo co-consecrating Bishops, BishopLyonsandBishop Stewart,whoassisttheBishop-elect,andinthebeginningoftheceremonyHis LordshipBishopLyonspresentedtheelecttotheConsecrator,whothereupon calledfortheApostolic MandateandorderedthatIt beread.ThisApostolic Mandateisavitaldocument.ItconveystheappointmentofthenewBishopbythePope,andthe permissionforhisconsecra-
tion.Thenfollowedwhat iscalledtheExamination, inwhichsome17questions concerningthecanonsof theChurchandArticlesof Faithwereproposed.To eachtheBishop-electanswered"Iwill"and"Idobelieve,"respectively.
AftertheExamination theSacrificeoftheMassbeganandcontinuedtothe lastverseoftheGradual aftertheEpistle,whenthe electwasagainpresentedto theConsecrator,whoset forththedutiesandpowers ofaBishop:"Itbehover abishoptojudge,interpret consecrate,offer,baptise andconfirm."
Theclergyandyouyour selves,mydearbrethren, wereinvitedtopraythat Godmightbestowthe abundanceofHisgraceon theelect,andtheLitanyof theSaintswaschanted whiletheBishop-electlay prostrateonthefloorofthe sanctuary.

Deathandeternityforusarefilledwithuncertainties.Thereareonlyafewthingsofwhichwe canhedefinitelycertain:Thefirstthatweshalldie, thesecondthatweshallliveeternally,andthethird isthatwemustmakesatisfactioneitherhereorin purgatoryforourmainsins,failingsandshortcomings.Thereisnoquestionwhatsoeveraboutthe firsttwopoints.andifanylivingpersonconsiders himselfsoperfectthatitwillnotbenecessaryfor himto"stopover"inPurgatory,thatpersonmore thanlikelywillhavethelongest"stopover;There isonlyoneclassofsoulsofwhomwearecertainare inheaven,andthatisthecatalogueofsaints.Our onlysafeassumptionregardingthebillionsofsouls isthattheyareinPurgatory,sufferingstillfortheir misdeedsonearth.Oh,itistrue,thatofthisvast number,countlessnumbersbelongtothatarmyof unusualsaintsand,therefore,arenolongerinPurgatory.Butwhoarethey?Wedonotknow,and wewillneverknowuntilwe,too,havepassedover thethresholdofeternity.Ourprayersandgood worksmustthereforebeintheirfavour,presuming theyarestillinPurgatory,lestweforgetthem there.
Itisafrighteningthought.toconsiderthepos- sibility-anditisaveryrealpossibility-thatsouls whowalkedthisearthattheverydawnofmankind arestillinPurgatorybecausetheirfellowmenhave forgottenthem.
Itisanevenmorefrighteningthoughttoconsidertheaddedpossibilitythatsomedaywemight jointhatunnamedandunnumberedarmyofforgottensoulsinPurgatory.Thus,evenforaselfish motive,weshouldrememberthedeadalways.
Anotherthingiscertain,thesoulsinPurgatory cannolongerhelpthemselves.Theycannotmake satisfactionforsinbyprayer,norcantheyarouse sorrowforvenialsin.Theirdayofpersonalsatisfactionisgone.We,theirbrothersonearth,can helpthemsoeasilywithourprayers,ourgood works.andoursacrifices.

Suddenlythethree middlegirlsatourhouse cameintomoney-big moneyforthem.Eachwas paid$10forposingforillustrationsinachildren's magazine.Itwasthefirst moneytheyhadeverearned outsideofsmallsumsfor householdtasks,andwe wereinterestedtoseehow theywouldhandlesucha windfall.
