Eachcountryhonoursitsunknownsoldiers.thatis, allthosewhodiedonthefieldofbattleunnamed, unknown.SotheChurchhonoursher"unknown saints,"thatis,thatvastbodyofmen,women,and childrenwhodiedinthebattleoflife,fightingunder thebannersofChristtheKing,butareunnamed andunknowntotheworld.TheChurchhasher calendarofsaints,thatis,thatnumberthatsheinfalliblydeclarestohesaints,eitherthroughcanonisationorbeatification.Butthenumberofsaints islegion,andcertainlynotlimitedtothesmallminiherweknowbyname.

Itiswrongtoidentifysainthoodwithausftritiesoflife.ThosearemerelyaidswhichSOME saintsusedtoachievetheirgoal.Theyareaccidentals.notessentials.Butsinceallofusin everystationoflifearecalledbyGodtohesaints. wemusthavethemeansathandtoachievethat goal.Thatgoalcanheachievednotonlyinthe extraordinarybutintheordinarythingsoflife.As onewriterputsit,webecomesaintsby"doingthe ordinarythingsoflife,extraordinarilywell."It simplymeansbeingagoodfather,mother,son,or daughter.Itmeansbeingfaithfultothedutycalledforbyourvocation,beitsingleormarried.

TheFeastofAllSaintsisatouchingexample oftheaffectionofMotherChurchforus,herchildren;itisthe"commonman'sfeast."Itmustbe ourambitioninlifesomedaytojointhatcountless butunnamedarmyofsoulswhocontinuouslysing "holy,holy,holy"beforethethroneofGod.We reachthatgoalbybeingsaintsonearth,byalways remaininginthestateofgraceandfreefromserioussin.PrayGodthatourdepartedfriendsand relativeswhomweknewsowellonearthareinthe corpsofsaintswhosefeastwecelebratenextThursday.We,too,becomemembersofthatfamilyof saintsbyrecognisingtheKingshipofChristinour liveswhileonearth.

JaneandJimmieKent takeseparatevacationshaveforyears-andare soldontheidea.

Janestoppedbyour housetoday,enthusiastic aboutthevacationshehad hadallbyherself.

"Wetookthechildrento thebeachforaweek,"she said,"thenitwasmyturn tobecomeanisolationist.I wentoffforaweek,gotup whenIfeltlikeit,played bridge,tookinauction sales-Jimmiehatesthose things-wenttomoviesand read'wayintothenight.It washeavenly."
