ClericsinSomeoftheOriental CatholicChurchesMayBeMarried
Thefollowingquestion comesfromJ.D.,ofWest Leederville: "Isittruethatinvarious countriesCatholicpriests arepermittedtomarry?"
A.:Notexactly.There aremarriedpriestsinEasternChurches,butitisusuallybeforetheyareordainedthattheyembracethe stateofholyMatrimony.
Fromtheearliesttimes,in theOrientalChurchesin communionwiththeSeeof Rome,thepracticeofcelibacyspreadmuchmore slowlythanintheWest, andwasneverimposedas anobligation.TheApostolicConstitutions(passed inA.D.400)forbadepriests tomarryafterordination, butallowedthem,ifalready married,toretaintheir wives.To-daythesame disciplineholds.Students forthepriesthoodaresent hometowardstheendof theirseminarycourse,about sixmonthsbeforeordinatin,togivethemanoppor- tunitytoselectawife.If theygetmarried,theyarethenadmittedtoordination.Iftheydonotget married,theymustpromise perpetualcelibacybefore beingadmittedtoordination.Afterordinationto thepriesthood'theyare neverpermittedtomarry evenifthefirstwifeshould die.Youseethenthereasonformylittledistinction atthebeginningofmy reply.

AFurtherProof OfUniversality
Q.:"Donotthesedifferencesargueagainst theUniversalityofthe Church?"
A.:Onthecontrary. I thinktheyarearguments initsfavour.Forthe pointsofdifferencearein mattersofdisciplineonly. Intheessentialpointsof faith, governmentandworship, thereiscomplete unanimity.Inotherpoints touchingonwhatonemight callthehumanelementof theChurch, thereisroom forandactualadmissionof differencespeculiar to placesandtopeoples.Take, forexample, thequestion ofclericalcelibacy. The revealedtruththatmarriageisgoodbutthatconsecratedvirginityisbetter, isfreelyadmittedandacceptedbothintheEastand intheWest.Butinthe EasttheChurchseesgood reasonsfornotapplying thisdoctrineuniversally, andinthatpartofthe worldallowsofamarried clergy.Thesegoodreasons are,e.g.,longstandingtradition,adifferentsenseof socialconduct, andadifferentsetupofsociallife. For theseandotherreasonsthe Churchseesthatmoreharm thangoodwouldresult fromimposingtheobligationofclericalcelibacy. Thereis, however, astrong voluntarymovementamong ChurchesofEasternorigin towardsconformingwith WesternChristendomin thisverymatterofclerical celibacy.
