Thisrareceremony,occu-pyingmorethatwoanda halfhours,wasperformed onaraiseddaiserectedbesidethepro-Cathedralof theBlessedTrinity.

Thehighaltar,surmountedbyasilvermonogramof theHolyNameandthe Benedictinemotto,was

deckedinthepapalcolours.

Onthegospelside,inscarletandgold,wasthecanopyandthroneoftheofficiatingprelate,theMost Rev.Dr.J.D.Simonds,CoadjutorArchbishopof Melbourne.

Abbot'saltarontheepistle side,mingleditscolourwith theharmonyofthesplen- didsanctuary.

Afterdiscouragingrain showers,whenthearena hadtobeabandoned,at10 o'clocksharplythesun brokethroughandthepro-cessioncommencedatthe

appointedtime.Lowering skiesand a fresheningbreezecontinuedthrough-outtheceremony,but'no rainofconsequencefell.

TothepealingoftheCathedralbells,thescarletcladprelates,theofficiating ministersinsplendidvestment,andthemonksin sombreblack,cameinpro- cessionalorderandthesolemnritecommenced.

Nowfullyclothedinhis robesofoffice,theAbbot wasledbytheArchbishop andenthronedwhilethe monasticbellspealedfor joy. The"TeDeum"wasintonedandtakenupbythe monasticchoir,thewhile theAbbotandhisassistants walkedthroughthecongregationbestowinghisblessing.

InhisreporttoCongressonUnitedStatesParticipationintheUnitedNationsfortheyear1950, PresidentTrumansaidthefailureoftheU.N.to effecttheinternationalisationofJerusalem"reflect"edawiderunderstandingthatanysuchregimemust havetheapproval"ofIsraelandJordan.

Uponreflection,thisdoesn'tstandup.The UnitedNationsGeneralAssemblyvotedtointernationaliseJerusalem,andappointedacommission tocarryoutthismandate.Thecommissionwas unabletocarryoutitsinstructions,largelybecause ittriedtogetbothIsraelandJordantoagreetoit beforeittookaction.Thecommission,apparently,wasplayingalongwiththeU.S.positionthatany planforpeaceinPalestinemustbeacceptableto bothIsraelandJordan.
