Aposyofflowerswaspresentedeachgirlasshesteppedfromthediesel,and largebouquetsweregiven Mrs.Galloway,accompanist,andMrs.Pope,conductress.

Itwasthefirsttimethat mostofthegirlshadbeen awayfromhome,andtears mingledwithsmileswhen happyandproudparents

werereunitedwiththeir children.

Areceptionwasgiventhe girlsattheconvent,and theRoadBoardwillformallywelcomethemhome andofferitscongratulationsatafunctiontobearrangedatalaterdate.

"Thespontaneousand heartywelcomegiventhe childrenfromallsectionsof thecommunitywasproof evidentoftherecognition oftheyearsofhardwork donebytheSistersandof thehonourbroughttothe townbythegirls,"a spokesmansaid.

Everygirlthoroughlyenjoyedthetripandallspoke highlyofthehospitalityof theirhostsinMelbourne andCanberra.Allwere, however,gladtobehome.

Amotiontothiseffect wasintroducedatarecent meetingbyMr.Oliver Bourke,whospokeasrepresentativeoftheCanberra branchoftheAustralian LaborParty,andpassedby fivevotestoone.

Speakerswhosupported Mr.BourkewereDr.B. Mathieson(HealthDepartment),Dr.L.W.Nott (formerM.H.R.forCanberra),andMr.A.T.Shakespeare(editorof"The CanberraTimes").Mr.J. N.Rogers,ActingCommonwealthSurveyor-General, opposedthemotion,which wassecondedbyDr.Nott.

HisGracereviewedDr. Goody'sexcellentrecordin theArchdiocesesincehis ordination.Hepointedout thatHighgatewaswell-deservingoifthehonourof havingtheAuxiliary Bishop-electasitsparish priestonaccountofitslong andoutstandingrecordfor pietyandloyalty.

TheArchbishoppaida hightributetoformerpastorsaudadministrators, especiallythelateFather CrowleyandDeanWallace. Thebesttestimonytotheir excellentworkwasthe

splendidparishplantchurches,schools,ahall,a presbyteryandaconvent.

Thesterlingworksof Brothersandnunsinthe schoolswarrantedtheclosest co-operationoftheparents.

HisGrr.ceconcludedwith aspecialwordtotheyoung peoplecftheparish.He exhortedthemtojointhe youthmovements,the Y.C.W.andtheN.C.G.M. Whatthesemovementswere tryingtodoneededthecooperationofeveryCatholic adolescentiftheywereto succeed.

Dr.Goody,inabrief reply,thankedtheArchbishopforhispresencethat dayandforhiskindlyremarks.Heassuredtheparishionersthat,sofarasit layinhispower,hewould endeavourtocarryonthe magnificenttraditionsthe parishenjoyed.

"Iamnotabigot,andI recognisewhatisbeing done.Whenamangoesto warforthecountryheis notaskedwhatschoolbe attended.Justiceshould begiven."

Mr.Bourkesaidthatthe parentsofthesechildren werepreparedtopaytheir tax,aproportionofwhich wasearmarkedfortheeducationoftheirchildren,but whichhadneverbeengiven them.Theyhadbeencompelledtobuildandmaintain theirownschools,andat thesametimepayforthe maintenanceofschools which,inconscience,they didnotuse,ordesiretouse.

"Everymemberofthis Councilknowsthatifany oneoftheCanberradenominationalschoolsclosed tomorrow,theresponsible departmentwouldnotbein apositiontogivethechildrenofthatschoolfacilities fortheireducation,"he added.

Hecontinued,"Itmaybe thattheDepartmentcould takeoverthebuildings,but whatusewouldthebuildingsbewithoutacompetentstaffofteachsers?"

Nocountryintheworld, includingtheso-calledmoderndemocraciesofEurope, haddonelessfor'theirindependentschoolsthanAustraliahad.

HollandandScotland werenotableexamplesof justicetotheirminorities. Theyaidedindependentand denominationalschools,and thestandardofeducation hadnotsuffered.

"We,likesubtleHitlers, havecontinuouslypersecutedourminoritiesbydeprivingthemofjusticeinthe matteroffreeeducationof theirchildren."

Mr.Bourkecontinuedthat thePrimeMinisterhadconsistentlydeploredthe growthoftotalitarianism attheexpenseoffreeenterprise.Atthesametime,

TheCommonwealthcensus ofreligions,issuedthis week,revealsthatbetween theyearsi933and1947,the CatholicpopulationofAustraliarosefrom1,288,997to 1,569,726,aproportional increaseof21.8percent (secondhighest).

Itwillberecalledthat thecensuspaperatthetime gavetwocategories-"Ro-manCatholic"and"Catholic."Itisclearfromthe tablegiveninthe"Year BookoftheCommonwealth ofAustralia"(No.38, 1951),alsoissuedthisweek, thatthemajorityofCatholicsprefertocallthemselvessimply"Catholic,"not "RomanCatholic."The number,whogavethemselvesas"RomanCatholic" showedasubstantialdecreasesincethe1933census.548,269gave"Roman Catholic";828,998gave simply"Catholic"(which intheYearBookiscalled "Catholic,undefined").

1921Census,92.258persons inAustralia(1.7percent) gavenoreplytothequestionofreligion,butin1933 andagainatthe1947census,whenthepublicwas informedthattherewasno legalobligationtoanswer thequestion,848,948(12.8 percent)and824,824(10.9 percent)respectivelygave noreply.The1947figure showsaslightimprovement overthatof1933.11.7per centofmenand10.0per centofwomendidno:,state theirreligionin1947. In1933andagain'n1947, 99percentofthosewho statedtheirreligionprofessedChristianity.Sincethe previouscensus,thenumber whostatedtheywereof non-Christianreligionincreasedby28percent.But, perhaps,mostsignificantof all,thosewhospecifically statedthattheyhadnoreligionatallincreasedby71 percent.Onthewhole,the 1947censusofreligions wouldseemtoindicatethat Australiacanstillbroadly becalledaChristian country,butthatirreligion isunquestionablyonthe increase.

BrotherClancywasaccompaniedbytheRev. BrotherP.L.Duffy,assis-tant-General,whowassuperiorofSt.Malachy'scol- lege,Adelaideterrace,from 1938to1941.

Wedonothavepeaceto-day.AsthePrime MinistersaidinPerthrecently,itisuselesstotalk aboutacomingwar,astoallintentsandpurposes weareatwaralready.Ourmenaredyingin Koreainanundeclaredwarwhosefightingisassav- ageasanycanrecall.Thereisactivefightingelse- whereintheworld.Whetherthisslaughterwill abateorwhetheritwilleruptsuddenlyintothe greatestwarofalltimesiswhatthepeopleofall nationsareanxioustoknow.

Itisconsideredageneralopinionamong leadersofthisandouralliednationsthatwecan expectwarwithintwoyearsandperhapsmuch earlier.
