NotwithstandingthefactthattheRedemptoristFatherstoldthelargecongregationinSacredHeartChurch,Highgate,on Sundaylastthat"itisthebabies'dayout, andtheycanmakeasmuch noiseastheylike,"comparativepeacereignedduringtheblessingofthe babiesoftheparish.

About70babiesrangingin agesfromafewweeksto twoyearsandwellover100 parentsandgrandparents tookpartintheceremony whichisafeatureofmissionsconductedbythe RedemptoristFathers.

"Youngcoupleshearso manysermonsonthesins againstmarriedlifethat weliketouseanoccasion likethistopaytributeto themanycoupleswhoare livingaccordingtothelaws ofGod,"oneofthamissionersexplained.Itwas an"enthrallingsight,"he added,toseethelarge numberofyoungcouples withtwoandthreechildrenatthefunction."Highgatehasgoodreasontobe proudofthem,"hestressed.

SistersfromtheHighgate theconventhadarranged StatueoftheDivine Infantin,alittlecribbeforethealtarofOurLady

ofPerpetualSuccourand hadpreparedmiraculous medalswithtinyblueribbinsandgoldsafetypins foreachchild. Afterashorttalkonthe significanceoftheoccasionthebabieswereblessedaccordingtotheRoman Ritualandthenwere broughtuptothealtar railswheretheywere givenaMiraculousmedal. Thewholecongregation wasthenblessedwiththe relicofSt.GerardMajella, patronofmothers.

Theactingadministrator oftheparish,theRev.M. Fitzgerald,saidthatthe numberofbabiespresent wasindicativeofthe growthof childrentheparish.Many fromotherpa-risheswereatpresentin theHighgateparochialschoolsbutthetimemight comesoonwhentheschools mightonlybeabletoaccommodatechildrenfrom theHighgateparish.

MacEwanthankedforhis constantcareandcourtesy duringhisillness,saidthat hadFatherMacEwan'stour beencompleteditwould havebrokenallrecordsfor artistspresentedinAustralia bytheCommission.

wasnotuntil1868that GovernorHamptongave permissionfortheestablishmentoftwoorphanages -oneforboysatSubiaco andtheoneforgirlsin whatisnowSt.Joseph's Boardingschool.Thislatterarrangementcontinued forabout30years.

WhentheBenedictine communitymadeitsfoundationinWesternAustralia,alargetractofswamp landontheshoresofLake Mongerwasreclaimedand convertedintovineyards andolivegroves,witha smallfarmadjoining.To thiswasgiventhename Subiaco,inmemoryofthe birthplaceofSt.Benedict. Whenthe Benedictine monksmovedtotheir newsettlementatVictoria Plains,theSubiacomonasterybecameanorphanage forboys.

Financesbecameoverburdenedinthelate1860's,and itwaswellnighimpossible fortheorphanagetocontinue.In1870oneboywas killedandpartofthe,buildingdestroyedwhenlightningstrucktheinstitution. Rebuildingnowbecame urgent,andthethenVicar General,FatherMatthew Gibney,setoffonacollectingtourthroughoutAustralia.In1872,withrepairs andadditionscompleted, theorphanagewasgivenin careoftheSistersofMercy, inwhosechargeitremained until1897,whentheywere relievedbytheChristian Brothers.Atthistime,the inmatesnumbered 100. Withtheexceptionofofficialandvice-regalreports ontheefficientstateofthe institutionverylittleis knownofthisquartercenturyofworkforthedestituteanddelinquentboys. Catholicfarmerstravelledlongdistancestoattendtheblessingandopening ofthenewconventofthePresentationSistersbytheArchbishoponSept.2atBrunswickJunction.

TheRev.W.Clery,parishpriestofHarvey,welcomedHisGrace.Heinvitedthelargecrowdtocontributetotheappeal,which wouldgotodefrayingthe costoftheproperty,bought for£2,000.

HisGracewelcomedthe nunstoBrunswick.It wasabigstepforward. Brunswickwasagrowing district.Therewereover 90Catholicchildreninthe Stateschool.Afewyears agoapermittobuilda schoolwasrequestedfrom theHousingCommission.In refusingthepermit,the Commissionhadstatedthat theStateschoolhadsufficientaccommodationforall thechildrenofthedistrict. But,inthemeantime,anotherroomwasaddedto theStateschool,andour requestwasstillrefused.

Thatattitudewasscarcelycomprehensibleinview ofthefactthatwewere preparedtobuildtheschool withoutanycosttothe Government,andinviewof thefactthatweweresup- plyingtwoorthreeextra teachersatatimewhenthe EducationDepartmentwas complainingofashortage ofteacherstostaffState schools,

HisGraceaskedthememberforthedistrict,Mr. Manning,andthemember oftheRoadBoard,Mr. Clarke,tousetheirinfluenceonbehalfoftheCatholicsofBrunswick.Hehopedthatbeforelongthe necessarypermitwouldbe granted.

Hethankedthenunsfor comingtoBrunswick,andhefeltconfidentthatthe peoplewouldco-operate withthemineveryway.

In1907ShaneLeslie,a NorthIrelandProtestant, madeatriptoRussia. Unlikemanywho,subsequentto1917,wereto journeytothatland,hewas insearchnotofCommunism, butofreligioustruth. RearedanAnglican,he subscribedatthattimeto the"branch"theory-that Christianitywascomposed ofthreeparallelbranches, eachequallyauthoritative andtrue,withtheircentres inRome,Canterbury,and Constantinople.

TheAnglicanyouthof22 hadbeenshakeninacceptanceofthe"branch"theory bythreechieffactors.The firstwasthewritingsof CardinalNewman,which, however,hewasnotyet preparedtofollowtotheir logicalconclusion.The secondwastheencyclicalof LeoXIIIdeclaringthatAnglicanOrderswerenotvalid. Thereviewersaidquite alotinpraiseofthisdelightfulbook,thetheme ofwhichiscenteredaround theMissionsintheNorthernTerritory.Infact,on hisrecommendationthat thebookwasworthreadingandworthkeeping,I readit,andamgladIdid.

InNovember,1895,Father Slatteryreadwithintense interestoftheremarkable discoverymadeinGermany byProfessorRoentgen. Everalerttothelatestadvancesinscience,hesaw someofthepossibilitiesof thisnewdiscovery.Inpar- ticularhesawwhatanaid tomedicalsciencethisdiscoverycouldbe,anddecidedatoncetostartexperimentingalongthelinesindicatedbyRoentgen.

Eveninthosefar-offdays of1895,St.Stanislauspos- sesseda well-equippedPhysicsHallandChemistry laboratory.FatherSlatteryalsohadanableassistant,Dr.C.A.Mulholland, teacherofchemistryatthe college.

Theequipmentincludeda smallgasengineandabatteryofaccumulators,afiveinchsparkingcoiland somevacuumtubesforillustratingtheactionofhigh tensioncurrentsinvacuum. InJuly,1896,theoppor- tunitycameforFather Slatterytousehisknow-

ledgeoftheX-raysinthe serviceofhealing.Anaccidenthadhappenedtoa youngmanwhohadbeena studentatthecollege-Eric Thompson.Dr.Edmunds wasconsideringtheamputationofThompson'shand, whichhadbeenbadlyshatteredbyshot.Having learnedofFatherSlattery'sexperiments,however,he tooktheyoungmantothe college,andthereFather Slatterymadeaverygood picturewiththeaidofa tubeandafive-inchcoil.
