ThestandardofYouth concertsinWesternAustraliareachedanall-time "high"onFridayevening withtheappearanceofthe visitingviolinist,Ricardo Odnoposoff,playingMax Bruch'sConcertoforViolin andOrchestra.-Italmost seemedapitythatthisconcertshouldhavebeenrestrictedtotheyoungergeneration,astherewereundoubtedlymanyadultswho wouldhavewelcomedthe opportunityofhearingsuch agreatartistinaConcerto which,eventhoughitmay notberankedbyspecialists amongthemighty,isaperfectlittlemusicalgem,and onewhichcontains,inits slowmovement,oneofthe loveliestmelodieseverwrittenfortheviolin.
TothisConcertoOdnoposoftbroughtatechnique andatoneofsuchperfectionthatitbecamean unforgettableexperience. Technicaldifficultieswere smoothedouttosuchadegreeastogivetheimpressionthatnoneexisted,and everyheartbeatofBruch's littlemasterpiecewasgiven anewandwarmermeaning.
Awordofpraiseisdueto theconductorandorchestra forthewayinwhichthey followedthesoloistinall hisinterpretation.Itwas noeasytask,forOdnoposoff tookmanylibertiesinhis useofrubato,yetnever oncewdsthereanylackof coordinationbetweensoloist andaccompanist.

WhereasIwouldsaythat theessentialeerinessof Moussorgsky'sworkwasnot conveyedbytheorchestra, theirplayingoftheBorodinwasclear-cutandaltotogetherexcellent.
Anevengreatercontrast wasprovidedinthenext item,"InaSummerGarden,"byDelius,withits lyricalbeautyofflowers, birdsandinsects.Somehowtheeffectwasnotobtained,andyettheindividualsectionscouldnotbe faulted.TheonlycriticismIcanofferisthatthere seemedtobetoomuchindividuality,andthevarious partsdidnotseemtounstandtheirplaceinthe whole.Thiswasparticularlyevidentwhereaphrase carriedoverfromonesectiontoanother,orfromone instrumenttoanother'for instance,fromtheflutesto clarinets).Therewasno matchingoftoneandfeeling,withtheresultthatthe phraselostitsfluidity.
ThefirsthalfoftheconcertconcludedwitharousingrenditionofSilebius' tonepoem,"Finlandia,"well handledwiththeexception ofthe"tattoo"passages fromthebrass,whichwere neithercrispenoughnor quiteaccurateintheirtiming.TheeveningconcludedwithanexcellentrenditionofLiszt'swell-known "LesPreludes,"awork whichreallyneedsaballet torescueitfromthescrapheap,buttowhichmyearlierremarksapplyasaptly asto"NightontheBare Mountain."

SYDNEY,June23.-TheStateParliamentofNewSouthWaleshasadjourned untilSeptemberwithoutenactinglegislation authorisingthefoundationofthefirstCatholicUniversityinAustraliabytheFathers oftheHolyCrossfromNotreDameUniversity,despiteearlierassurancesbyPremierMcGirr,thattheenablinglegislation wouldbepassedduringthesessionjustconcluded.
AlthoughtheCabineton February21announceda firmdecisiontopassthe necessaryActofParliament,andalthoughMr.McGirrrepeatedlyinsistedthat itwouldbepassed,serious doubtsarenowheldthat theGovernmentwillactin accordancewithitsprevious undertakings.
Thematterhasagaincome beforetheCainbetwhich, insteadofinstructingthe EducationMinister,R.J. Heffron,tointroducethe BillinParliament,sidetrackeditbydecidingthata sub-committeeofthree Ministersshouldexamine analternativeformin whichtoframethenecessarylegislation.
OriginallyaspecialBill wastobeintroducedto authorisethespecificestablishmentofaCatholicUniversity.Now,theCabinet sub-committeeisexamining thenotionofageneralBill, whichwouldenablealldenominationswhomightso desiretoreceiveauthorisationtofoundadenominationaluniversity.Whether evenageneralBillofthis characterwillultimatelybe passedappearsdoubtfulat thisstage,althoughitmaysubsequentlybegivenlegis- lation.WithParliamentin recess,however,thematter isvirtuallyinabeyance.
