ForonthatdaytwoSisterspronounced theirfinalvows,10celebratedthesilverjubileeoftheirReligious'Profession,andfive youngnunsarrivedfromtheIrishnovitiate inCountyMayo,Ireland.

OnthemorningofJuly 2,Masswascelebratedin theconventchapelbythe RightRev.Mgr.E.Kennedy,V.G.TheRev.E. McSweeney,chaplaintothe community,assistedinthe sanctuary,andtheVery Rev.P.Talty,C.Ss.R., preachedtheoccasionalsermon.

TheSisterswhomadethe finalvowswere:SisterM. EuphemiaKellyandSister M.MarthaForde.BothSistersarenativesofCounty Galway,Ireland.

ThePontificalMission Aidsocietieswerefounded inAustraliain1901,the yearofFederation.Since thePropagationoftheFaith wasaninternationalorganisation,thesubscriptionwas fixedatafigurewhichbore somerelationshiptothe famousHarvesteraward givenafewyearslater.

Obviously,withthevast increaseinwages,theannualsubscriptionfixed50 yearsagodidnotrepresent anamountequaltothedemandsoftheMissionstoday.

Monsignorstressedthat thePontificalsocietiesprovidedforallmissions,and howevergoodspecialcauses mightseem,moneywaslost inexchange,andfurthermore,theHolyFatherknew besthowtodistributemissionaryfundsaccordingto need.

Confirmationdayhascome andgone,leavingvery happymemoriesofavery impressiveceremony.The children'srecitalofthe prayershadallthefinishof atrainedverse-speaking choir.Theirsponsorswere faultlessthroughoutthe ceremony.

ThistimeHisGraceadministeredtheSacrament fromthepredella.Hewas assistedbyDeanRafferty andFatherHogan.The childrenandtheirsponsors enteredthesanctuaryfrom bothendsofthealtarrails, anditmadeamovingpicture.HisGracewasvery complimentaryontheappearanceandbehaviourof thechildren.

Thesingingwasexceptionallygoodthatevening. Thealtarneverlookedlovelierwiththecrimsonsplash ofPoinsettia.Theoldgold tabernaclecorer,withits richcoloursofhand-embroideryinCelticdesigns, madeinDublinbytheskilfulfingersofaladyingratitudeforthegiftofhealth receivedduringtheIrish pilgrimagetoFatimainOctober,1949,wasmuchadmired.

Acompleteset,eachcolourwithdistinctiveembroidery,isnowatSt.Columba's,workedbythe handsofthesamelady.It isdifficulttomakeachoice betweenthegreenandthe purple,thewhiteandthe red,butthegold,ofcourse, issomethingveryspecial.

Anadditionalgloryin stainedglassisonitsway fromDublin.Theartistis thefamousRichardKing, whodesignedtheIrishair stampsandspecialissues. Hisworkeachyearinthe CapuchinAnnualismuch admiredinoudandnew lands.Wehopetoseefour windowsofthesandtuary withthesepanelsbefore manymoreweeks.

PaymentofIs.inthepoundrebateand 3percent.interestonshareholders'capital, foritsfirstperiodoftrading,isthepleasing recordoftheMelbourneY.C.W.Co-operativeTradingSocietyLimited.Thesewere declaredattheannualmeetingheldrecentlyatY.C.W.headquarters.

Thisdefiniteachievementintheinterestsof itsmember-customersis anothertriumphforthe YoungChristianWorkers' Movementinitscourageous andexpandingplansto helpAustralia'sworking youthandyoungmarried couples.Ithasbeenattainedonlyasaresultofmuch thought,prayerandsacrificeonthepartofthesponsorsandorganisers,andof patienceandloyaltyoffoundationmembers.

TheY.C.W.firstoriginateditsplanforaCo-operativein1948.In1949,Mr. FrankMcCann,formerAustralianY.C.W.nationalsecretary,wasappointedfirst

generalmafiagerandsecretaryofthesociety.His energyandactivitybrought abouttheopeningoftrading inOctober,1949. Operatingfromrestrictedpremisesandbattling againstnumeroussupply difficulties,ameretrickling ofloyalmemberswerethe onlycustomersforafew months.Thesemembers soonrealisedthedifference oftradingin"theirown shop"andsatisfactorysresultsledtoamarked growthinbusiness.Theimmediateaimofthesociety wastoengageinthesaleof furnitureandotherhouseholdgoods.

Helpingyoungmarried couplesfurnishtheirhomes aseconomicallyaspossible wasanaturalfollow-up,for alreadytheY.C.W.has sponsoredtwelveCo-operativeHousingsocietiesto helppeoplefinancetheir ownhomes.Asthesociety progressedtherangeof goodsavailableforsalehas increased,untilnowalmost allhouseholdrequirements canbepurchasedthroughit.

Atthepresenttime,the societyhas413members.If thegoodwillevidencedat theAnnualMeetingperseveres,thatmembership shouldsoonredouble.Also, manymoreofthepresent membersshowsignsofbecomingmoreactiveinthe lifeandexpansionofthe Society.Thiswillbeareal stepforward,becauseitis importantthatmembers regardthesocietyasmore thanameansofgettinga reductioninprices,through rebates.Theymustbealive toTheparttheycanplayin thespreadofChristiancooperation.

TheAustralianLabour Party,whichincludesmany Catholics,andtheAustralianCouncilofTrades Unions,towhichmostimportanttradesunionsare affiliated,arebothcommittedtotherocialistobjec- tive.

Theeffectofthison Catholicmembers,inview ofPapaldirectivesonsocialism,hasbeenamuch discussedquestion,theview beingthatonlywithreservationsandbyinterpreting theobjectiveinalimited sensecouldCatholicscommitthemselvestoit.

"Intheschoolsatchelliethekeysofto-morrow,"is adictumwhichCatholicshaveendorsedwithsome cost.Ofcourse,unlessthehomeisright,itisworse thanuselesstobeworriedabouttheschool,evenif itheasecularschool.Butinmanyinstanceshabits ofrightthinkingandrightliving,builtupoverthe periodofchildhoodinthehome,arepulledcrown withinafewmonthsintheschoolenvironment, Thismayarisefromtwocauses.Perhapssome parentsimagineitenoughtoincitethechildtovirtuouslivingfrompurelynaturaland,therefore,insufficientmotives.Itisnotsufficienttoacquirethe spiritof"thesport,"thatjollyfellowwhoneverdoes anyoneanyharm.Virtuemusthaveasupernatural motive,andmustbedefinitely'positive,aimingtodo goodasmuchastoavoidevil.Butthemainonus ofthismerelynaturalistictendencytowardsvirtue canbesafelylaidatthedoorofseculareducation. Itisunspeakablyinadequate,evenforitsownobjectiveoftrainingforcitizenship.Foraboy'strue civicprideandvirtuecouldonlybesolidinthelight andpromiseoftheEternalCity.However,thereis noneedto,dwellonthis.Wecanseethefailure ofsecularisminanyofthelettersinthePresswhen discussinganymoralissue.

Deservingofthirdplaceinthemajorcausesof whyyoungstersfallintocrimeisundoubtedlythe fast-crumblingsocialandeconomicfabric.Despite theardourofcertainsociologists,itcanonlybe thirdbecayseitisstillpossible,thoughexceeding difficult,tohaveagooddeedshininginanaughty world.Ifthehomeandtheschoolweresound,the SaintsmightliveagaineveninBabylon,though they\you'd,forthemostpart,bemartyrs.As thingsstand,thereisaninhumanexploitationof younglabourwhichnoChristiangovernmentwould tolerate.Twodecadesagothisexploitationwascarriedoutbyimpossiblylowwagesanddead-end4jobs. ReHaroldBlair-Iwould sayfurtherto"MusicLover's"remarksthatthe tenor'spitchwasmoreperfectthanseveralotherrenownedartistswehavehad duringthepast,andthatis greatlytohiscredit.

Also,"MusicLover"mentionedabouttheoboeand thepitchoftherestofthe orchestra.FromwhereI, andothers,weresitting,this wasnotnoticeable,andas theCapitolisnotbyany meansperfectacoustically, perhapsachangeofseat positionforyourcritic wouldaltermatters.

Inthisorchestrathereare someplayerswhohavea petpitchoftheirown,and insteadoftakingtheirpitch fromtheoboe(whichisthe recognisedgiverofthe"A" allovertheworld),they wishtohavetheirown pitch,nomatterwhatinconvenienceitmaycause thewindplayers,andwith evidentlynothoughtforthe goodoftheorchestraasa body.

Perhapsthereasonofthe oboegivingthepitchforthe orchestrawouldbeinterestingtoyourreadersand othersnotaufait.withthis.

Theoboeispracticallya fixedpitchinstrumentfor thefollowingreason:The oboistsmaketheirown reeds-thesearetunedtoa forkofA440;thenthereed isadjustedsothattheoctavesplayintune(thisis theimportantpart),and whenthisisdone,anypullingoutorshorteningtosuit anyotherplayerwithapet pitch,putstheinstrument outoftunewithitself,and soprovingasourceoftroubletotheoboeist,asthisin-

Oneofthesixyoungmen ordainedonJune2was blue-eyed,red-hairedPeter J.Smith,now30yearsold, whooweshissightandperhapshislifetothemiraculousintercessionofAmerica'sfirstcitizentobecanonised,St.FrancisXavier Cabrini.PeterSmith'smiraculouscureasatinyinfant wasacceptedbytheSacred CongregationofRitesin Romeasthefirstmajor miracletowardthecauseof MotherCabrini'sbeatification.Later,asayouthof 17,hewitnessedherbeatificationinRomein1938.

FatherSmithwasordainedtothepriesthoodatthe MotherCabriniShrinein NewYork,atthefootofthe altarthatenclosestheremainsoftheSaintwhose intercessionplayedsuchan importantroleinhislife.

Itwasaboutnoonon SmithwasborninColumMarch14,1921,thatPeter bushospitalextension,now Mother'Cabrinihospital, NewYork,thefirst-born sonofMr.andMrs.Peter J.Smith.Asamatterof routine,theattendingnurse putasolutionofsilver nitrateintotheinfantseyes. Afterwardsshesawthatshe hadusedafiftypercent. insteadofaonepercent solution,andsheknewthat thebabyseyeshadbeendestroyed.

Twodoctorsagreedthat thecorneawasgoneinboth eyesandthatnothingcould bedone.

TheMotherSuperiorhurriedin,bringingarelicof MotherCabrini,whohad diedonlythreeyearsbefore,andtouchedittolittle Peterseyesbeforepinning ittohisnightgown.Then sheandtheSistersspent theentirenightinprayerin thedhapel.Theoffending nursehadalreadygone thereandwasprayingferventily,almostfrantically.

Thenextmorningthedoctorscameagain.Oneof themlookedattheother afterhehadbentdownto thebabyandaskedhiscolleague:"AmIseeing things?Theotherdoctor bentdownandlookedinto Peterseyeswithalight. "No,youarenotseeing things,butheis.Those eyesarenowperfectlynormal."

ShortlyafterwardsPeter Smithwastherecipientofa secondmiracle.Thatday hisvisionwasrestortd,the babygotdoublepneumonia. Histemperaturewas109 degrees.Thedoctorsrushedinagain."Well,"they said,"thistemperatureis generallyfatal."Oneturned totheSuperior."Mother," hesaid,"youwillhaveto dosomepraying.Even thoughthoseburnshavenot harmedthebaby,thisfever willburnhimtodeath."

"Doctor,"sheanswered, "MotherCabrinihasnot curedhiseyesjusttolet himdieofpneumonia."

Theladiesofthecommittee,headedbyMisses NoreenHarfordandValmai Liddellhandlingcateringarrangementsadmirably,and materiallycontributedto thesuccessoftheevening. Theresultsofthesurvey weredisclosedinanarticle writtenbyBrotherDennis McCarthy,O.M.I.,for-Our SundayVisitor,"national Catholicweekly,published here.Thesurveydisclosed thattheGI'sturnedseminarianscamefromallbranchesofthearmedforces andfromranksranging fromprivatetolieutenant colonel.

PARIS,June19(NC.)Twopriests,chaplainsin theFrencharmy,have beenmurderedinIndoChina. TheyweretheRev. PierreJeanson,50,chaplaingeneralofFrench armedforcesinIndoChina,andhisassistant, theRev.PierreBoulard,30.

Bothwerestabbedto deathbypartisansofthe Communist-ledVietMinh forcesnearCantho,atown about60milessouth-west ofthecapitalcityofSaigon.

ThetwopriestswerevictimsofwhatFrenchauthoritieshaveofficiallycalled"a cowardlyandhatefulmurder."

FathersJeansonandBoulardhadbeenridingajeep inatank-escortedconvoy whenoneoftheconvoy's vehiclesranoveraland mine.Atthatmomenta troopofabout200Viet Minhrebels,whohadbeen hidinginambushnearthe

road,openedfireonthe Frenchcolumn.

Toshowthatitsoccupantswerenon-combatants, thepriests'jeepretreated about200yardsbehindthe besiegedconvoywherethe twochaplainsgotout.

Theretheywereattacked bysome50rebelsoldiers whoseizedthem,dragged themintoaricefield,and stabbedthemintheback. Theassassinsthenstrippedthemoftheirclothing andcrosses.

Fromtheverybeginning oftheincidentthepriests haddoneeverythingin theirpowertomakeclear theirnon-combatantstatus. TheofficialFrenchreport ontheattackemphasised thefactthat"nomistake waspossible.VietMinh troopswereguiltyofacowardlyandhatefulmurder."

Inamessagetohistroops, GeneraldeLattredeTassigny,commander-in-chief ofFrencharmedforces, stated:

"ChaplaingeneralJeanson Boulard,andassistantchaplain whoaccompanied him,leftSaigontomakea pastoraltourthroughsouthernNiet-Nam,totakethe comfortof.theirministryto thetroopswhosharetheir faithandtheirradiantcharitytoall."

Afterrecallingthefacts oftheirdeaths,thegeneral concludedbysaying:
