ItisthreeyearssincetheBritishtroopsmoved clownKingGeorge(nowKingDavid)Avenuein JerusalemonMay14,1948,andlefttheHolyCity tobloodywarfare.Conditionstherehadsomewhat beenlostsightof,partlybecausefightinghasmeanwhilebrokenoutinKorea.Buttheworldisbeginningtorealizethatthe'landmadesacredby thepresenceofOurLordonearthhasitsown "38th.parallel,"whichseparatespeoplefromtheir holyshrines.Therecanbenohopeofpeacein theHolyLanduntiltwomajorproblemsaresettled -and titionproperly.TheproblemsarethepresentparoftheCityofJerusalemandthedeplorable statusofthehundredsofthousandsofArabrefugees whoweredriven'fromtheirhomesinthecourse ofthefightingandhavenotbeenpermitedtoreturn.Theonlyproper'solutiontothequestionof partitionisonethatlooksatthewholequestion. WordfromPalestineindicatesthatthesituationdailybecomesmoreexplosive.Itisasituation,apparently,whichwillnotjustgoawaybecauseitis.ignored.Itis,moreover,asituation whichoffersnomorepromiseofrealpeaceuntil itissettledrightly.Itcannotbeproperlysettled byconsideringonlytheaimsandtheambitions ofJordanalone,ofIsraelalone,oftheArabStates alone,ortherightsandaimsofIsrael,Jordanand theArabStatestogether.Manytimesmorepeople -theChristiansthroughoutthewholeworld-are concerned.Theywillneverbesatisfieduntilthe safetyandaccessibilityoftheHolyPlacesisentirelyassured.Onlyrecentlyalargepilgrimage fromtheUnitedStateslandedfromanAmerican shipatTelAviv.TheysawthesightsofthesocallednewJerusalemandtherestoftheJewishoccupiedzoneofPalestine.But,inordertovisit theHolySepulchreandtheothersacredChristian shrinesintheOldCity,theyhadtoreboardtheir liner,sailtoLebanon.disembark,charteranairplaneandflybacktotheself-sameJerusalem.Only inthiswaycouldtheyvisithallowedspotswhich wereonlyafewhundredfeetawayfromthema fewdaysbefore,butwhichtheycouldnotreach. becfusetheshrineswereacrossthatlittlestripof no-man'sland.

IwasinvitedtoConciliummeeting,butunfortunatelyIdidnotarrivein Dublinintimeforit.This wasagreatdisappointment.ThehonourofattendingameetingofConciliumthegoverningbody oftheLegionofMary, throughouttheworldwould havebeenatremendous thrillforme.However,Mr. FrankDuffandtheother Conciliummembersgave meahearteningwelcome whenIdidarrive.
Mr.Duffisthemost humblemanIhaveever hadtheprivilegeofmeeting.Heattendsameeting asthemostmodestmember. Astrangerwouldnever guessthatOurLadyhad chosenthisquietspoken mantosettheworldaglow withherLegion.
1spentthefirstevening intheOfficeofthe"ReginaCoeli"Hostelwith Mr.DuffandConcilium memberstalkingaboutthe Legion.TheywereveryinterestedintheBroome praesidiumofcoloured peopleandthePerth Braillepraesidium.
Mr.Dufftookabigmap ofAustralia,onwhicheven thesmallesttownswere markedandsaid,"Now, lookatallthosenames,the Legionshouldbeinall theseplaces;evenifthere areonlytwogoodCatholicsinatinytownship,let themmeetonceaweekin OurLady'snameandrecitetheRosaryandLegion prayers-morewillsurely comelater."
"Thosedoingconvert work,"he continued, "shouldsaytothemselves: 'AmIsurethatIamfollowingtheteachingof JesusChrist?AmIquite surethattheCatholic Churchistheonetrue Church,andamIhappyin myreligion?'Whenthey cananswerthesequestions intheaffirmative,theywill beoverflowingwithenthusiasmtosharewithothers theFaith,whichtheythemselvespossess."

IattendedaCuriameet,ngwhereseveralveryinterestingreportswereread frompraesidiaattachedto theCuria.Itwasahappy meeting;besidesmyself therewerevisitorsfrom Canada,AmericaandGermany.IwastoldthatConciliumreceiveslegionaries fromforeignnationsalmost everyday.

Forthosewhocannotpay thissumataskisprovided inthelabouryard,which whencompleted,isacceptedaspaymentfortheir lodging.
Themaximumaccommodationis200andformost oftheyearitisfull.Every residentmustregisterevery evening.Thelegionaryon dutyintheofficehasto questioneachapplicantto seeifheiseligibleforadmission.Thehostelisa littleheavenfortheseunfortunatemen.Thereare billiards,tabletennis, books,areadingroom,a bathroom,awashhouseand aplacetodrytheirclother. Thereisadebatingsociety tobrightenupthehostel life,atwhichthegreat Australianlegionarypriest, FatherClearyofMelbourne, wasaguestspeakerlast year.Sometimesconcerts andfilmshowsandoutings arearrangedtoincrease thefamilyspiritoftheresidents.
LastNovember,theArchbishopgavepermissionfor theBlessedSacramentto bereservedintheoratory ofthehostel.Mr.Duffsaid thattheeffectofthiswas distinctlymarkedinallthe activitiesofthehostel. OnceaweekMassiscelebratedintheoratorywhich hasbeenmadebeautifulby thelegionarydecorators. Thereisalsoasodality MassonthefirstSundayof eachmonth.Thesodality consistsofresidentmen andmanyreceiveHoly Communiononthosemornings.
ConnectedwiththehostelistheRetreatpraesidium.Itsworkistheorganisationofretreatsfor theresidents,renovations andrepairstothebuildings, cateringforandattending totheretreatants,andthe veryimportanttaskof makingafriendlycontact witheachmanduringthe retreat.Eightypercentof theresidentsmadethelast Retreat.
Legionariesarevery proudofalatememberof thepraesidiumtheyhave amongstresidentsofthe Hostel.Thisparticularman entirelylefttheoldasso-
ciations.behindandwentto liveinEngland,wherehe wasinstrumentalinstartingapraesidium.Heremainedatruelegionary untilhisdeath.ThePriest attendinghimduringhis lastillnesspaidaglowing tributetohispatienceand resignation.
Iattendedthemeetingof the"ReginaCoely"praesidiumwhichconsistsof20 legionarieswhoconductthe hostelforwomenfromthe street.Thistremendoushostelisrunentirelybyvoluntarylabourofthelegionaries.Someofthem havemadeittheirlife workandspendthewhole ofeverydaythere.
AsIwasshownoverthe Hostel,Ithoughtofthe goodnessofOurLady,who throughherlegionarieshad providedthisHomeforthe unfortunatesoflife,theunmarriedmothersandbabies fromthestreetsand prisons.
Thehostelwasopenedin theearlylifeoftheLegion ofMarytoreceive23girls fromadenofvicein "Blank"Street.Theywere consideredahopelessproposition,untilonedaythe legionariesmadeanappeal aniofthe31girlslivingin theden23wenton"Retreat"toBaldoyleConvent andthentothehostel.
BentlyPlace,consistingof threestreetswhichformed atoleratedareaofvice,was visitedbythelegionaries andninegirlswereprevailedupontoleave,not oneofwhomeverturned back.
Thereisapraesidium amongstthedetectivesof theDublinPoliceForce. Theirrestraininginfluence isfeltontheResidentsof theHostelsetc.,ifthey returntotheoldlife.
Iattendedameeting lookingafterthespiritual welfareofinmatesofa prison.Theinfluenceofthe Legionisdefinitelyfeltin Ireland,becauseIbelieve twoprisonsareclosing downforwantofprisoners.
IwasinvitedtoameetinginBraywherethelegionarieshaveafinetwostoreybuilding,"Fatima House,"builtbytheirown voluntarylabour.These membersareresponsible fortheBookBarrowon O'Connellbridge.
TheLegionworkin Dublinistremendousand asIonlyhadsixdaysjust sawaverysmallportion ofit.

Thebeautifulstatueof OurLadywasablazeof lightsandflowersandwith theceremoniesandchoirit wasallalittlebitofheaven. Laterinthestreet,alllights wereextinguishedandthe trafficstopped,whileablue floodlightwasthrownon thestatueofOurLady abovethechurchdoor,and hundredsandhundredsof peoplestoodinthecold nightsinginghymnstoOur Lady.

Thegreatpoet,Robert Browning,hastoldabeautifulstoryofalittleItalian girlnamedPippa.Shehad lostherparentsandworkedhardalldaylonginthe silkmillsofAsolo. Ononeparticulardayshe wasvery,verythoughtful. Shewasallowedonlyone holidayperyear,andthis wastheveryday.Sinceit washeronlyholidayfor theyear,shewishedto maketheverymostofit, andthatwaswhyshewas thinkingsodeeply.Inthe endshethoughtofanovel plan.Shedividedtheday intofourparts,andthought offourpeoplewho,sheimagined,werethehappiest beingsinAsolo.Thenshe decidedshewouldplayshe waseachoneofthefourin turnduringtheday.

OnedaySt.PeterandSt. Johnwentuptothetemple topray.Aathattimethere werenoparishchurchesin Jerusalem,buttheCatholicssaidtheir,prayersin thetemple,andtheApostlesofferedHolyMassfor themintheirhomes.
AsthetwoApostlesgot nearthegateofthetemple thatwascalledBeautiful, theysawalameman stretchedoutbeforethe gate,beggingfromthe peopleastheycamealong. WhenSt.PeterandSt.John werenearthelamebeggar, becalledtothem:"Please givemeafewpennies!"

Thelatenessisexplained byanoldschoolgirlreunion of18thatmethereandof coursethehousehadtobe shiningwhentheyarrived.
Itwas-butonlyonthe surface!Windows,silver, furniture,floors,pictures andmirrorsgleamed;the woodworklostitsfamiliar "human"touchoffingermarksandcleancurtains hungcrisplyatallthewindows-butlet'snotgointoall theincidentalparaphernalia stowedawayhastilyin cupboardsanddrawers.
Well,"thegirls"cameandwent-andwebegan lookingforthings.Thenthe realstateofthehouse showedup.Therewere blanketstobewashed,the atticcleaned,bedsprings dusted,cupboardscleared outandde-mothed-you knowtheprocedure.
Itseemedfutilewhenthe surfacewasshiningand bright,butthedayafter theluncheonIdecidedto gettowork-realwork, andtoDOthecupboardsif Ilivedthroughtheday. WhilezealburnedItook everythingoutofevery cupboardthenthings wouldhavetobesorted beforetheycouldbeput back.Itwasatoughaisignment.

FatherC,:lienwasborn inNewRoss,Cd.Wexford, onOctober23rd1841.His firsteducation,asofall children,wasinthehome fromgoodparents,and especiallyfromagood mother,whoseteachingand exampleinfluencedhis wholelife.Thefoundation aofhisseculareducation waslaidinanewlyfoundedChristianBrothers' School,andattheageof fifteenhewassentto Clongowes.Hehadalways thoughtofbecominga priest,andatClongowes hefinallymadeuphis mind.Hewasacceptedfor thedioceseofFernsbythe Bishop,Dr.Walshe,who allowedhimtodohisecclesiasticalstudiesinCarlow College.Hewasordained tothepriesthoodonOctober28th1864.Hespent twoyearsasacuratein thetownofWexford,and fifteenyehrsintheMission House,Enniscorty,asa MissionaryoftheBlessed Sacrament.Hewasoneof thefourpriestswhorespondedtothecallofthe BishopofFerns,Dr.Furlong,tofoundaMission House,theothersbeing Fr.Warren,laterBishopof Ferns;Fr.Brownrigg,afterwardsBishopofOssary: andFr.Cloney,laterP.P. ofTagoat.

FatherCullenwasavery successfulmissionary,givingmissionsandretreatsin parishes,convents,colleges andschools,foundingand organisingconfraternities, sodalities,altarsocieties andcentresoftemperance work.In1881hewasable torealisethedesireofseveralyears-toenterthe SocietyofJesus.Asa Jesuithefeltwithinhimselfanaddedpowerfrom membershipofagreat Orderlongestablishedin theuniversalChurch,and fromashareinitsreligious andintellectuallife.His externalactivitiesremainedsubstantiallyunchanged.Withthepermission ofhissuperior,hecontinued,inawiderfield,and witheverincreasingintensity,theworkinwhichhe hadbeensosuccessfulin theMissionHouse-found ing,organising,andhelpingamultitudeofgood works,directingforthe wholeofIrelandboththe workoftheApostleshipof PrayerandtheSodalities oftheBlessedVirgin-his workculminatinginthe foundationin1898ofthe PioneerTotalAbstinence AssociationoftheSacred Heart. Suchistheskeletonof FatherCullen'slife.Itwas alifeofintenseactivity, intowhichhecrowdedthe workofseveralmen,planning,foundlingandorganisingworkswhichstillendureandarefulloflifeand vigour.Duringalongministryoffifty-sevenyears, hespenthimselfinthemost variedactivitiesforthe spiritualandtemporalwelfareofhiscountrymen,so thatinthewordsofDr. CoffeyofMaynooth,"were wetohazardthejudgement thathehasdonegreater workforGodandforIrelandduringtheyearsofhis ministrythananyother singleindividual,weshould encounterincredulity,yet weshouldnotbesurprised ifhistoryweretoratifythe verdict."
