HewasborninRoscommonofoldIrishstock thatgavemanyPriests,BrothersandNunstothe serviceofGod.Someofthesearenowlabouring inEire,othersinAustralia,NewZealand,Africa andtheUnitedStatesofAmerica.
Afterreceivinghisearlyedu-In1914helefttheDiocese cationintheWestofIrelandhe.accompaniedbyFr.Robinsonto wenttoMelleraycollegeforbecomeaRedemptorist. philosophyandtoKilkennyforOnhiswaytotheNovitiate theologyItwastherehefirstinIrelandhemadepilgrimages metBishopGibney,andwithtotheHolyLand,Rome,Croagh thelateArchdeaconSmythandPatrick,andLoughDerg.
FatherO'NiellvolunteerdforHemadehisReligiousProfesPerthDiocese.Hewasordain-sioninDundalkin1915.Soon edinKilkennyCathedralin December1902andshortlyafterwardscametoPerthaccompaniedbythelateDeanGilroy andFr.Donohue.
Hisfirstappointmentwasto St.Brigid's,WestPerth,under thegentleguidanceofMonsignorBourke.AfewyearsafterwardshebecameParish PriestofBridgetownandGreenbushes.Inthosedaysthere wereextensiveparishes,few priestsandnomotors.SundayafterSundayhedroveor rodethefourteenmilesbetween BridgetownandGreenbushesto sayMassinbothplaces.
OnChristmasDayhedidthe sameandthensetoutforhis thirdMassinDonnjbrookor someothercentre.Hemade zealouseffortstoprovidereligiousinstructionforeverychild intheparish,andtohaveall hispeoplefrequentedthe Sacraments.
In1910hewasrecalledto Perth,appointedEditor"The Record'',andgivenchargeof Armadalewherehebuiltthe presentChurchofSt.Francis Xavier.

TheRev.L.FlynnS.J.,who hasbeenforsomeyearsonthe staffofSt.Louisschool,lefton May22forMelbourne,where hewilljointhestaffofthe Richmondparish.
afterwardShecommenceda strenuousroundofMissionary laboursthroughoutIreland, whichcontinueduntil1919when hestartedformorestrenuous laboursstillinthePhilippines Islands,whichisoneofthemost tryingaswellasoneofthemost fruitfulofallRedemptorist missionfields. Hesethimselfsoearnestlyto thetaskofacquiringaknowledgeoftheFilipinoslanguage, thatinashorttimehewasable tohearconfessionsandpreach tothemintheirowndialect.He found,thepeopleasarulenominalCatholics,withscarcelyany schools,andpriestssofewthat ofanaverageeachhadtocare formorethantenthousand souls.Theresultwasthatthe greatmajorityknewbutlittle abouttheirreligiousobligations.

Manymonthsofnegotiationhadahappyconclusioninthearrivalat FremantlethisweekofacarillonofbellsforSt.Mary'sCathedral.
Thecarillonofelevenbellshosbeendesignedasanadvanceinstallationofwhatwilleventuallybeacompletecarillonoffromthreetofour octaves.
Theyhavebeencastand suppliedbythefamousCroydon (England)firmofbellfounders, GillettandJohnston,whichwas favouredlastyearwij,han orderfromtheAustralianBattlefieldsMemorialsCommittee forwhatwillbethelargest carillonintheSouthernhemispheretobeinstalledinthe toweroftheCanberraWarMemorial.
Thebellswhichvaryin weightfromoneto9icwts.will beoperatedbyahandclavier ofthelatesttypewhichissaid togiveadelicateand.responsivetouch,andaresotuned thattheyprovidescopefor playingawiderangeofthe morecommonandbetterknown carillontunes.
Thecarillon,whichisagift totheCathedralfromanumber ofgenerousbenefactors,commemoratestheHolyYearof 1950andtheSolemndefinition ofthedoctrineoftheAssumption.Thelargestandheaviest bell,orBourdon,..bears.thefollowinginscriptioninLatin,"I wasmadeintheyearofthe GreatJubilee,byorderofRedmond,theBishop,tocommemoratethedefinitionbyPiusXII ofthedoctrineoftheAssumptionoftheImmaculateMother ofGodintoHeaven."
Beforebeingpackedthe completeinstallationofbells, framework,clavierandaction wereerectedinthefactoryof Messrs.Gillett&Johnstonat Croydonandgiventhorough workingtestsbeforeshipment. Presentatthistest,astheArchbishop'srepresentative,wasDr. W.GreenhouseAllt,Principal ofTrinityCollegeofMusic, London,wholatercabled:"I warmlyapproveofyourcompletedcarillon.Thebellsarethe bestIhaveeverheard".
Thecablewasfollowedbya letterfromDr.Alltinwhich hewrites:"Iconfirmthestatementinmycable,andconsider
.thecarillontobeanexcellent andmostimpressiveachievement.Thetraditions'ofthe ancientCroydonBellFoundry areexcelledbynoneinperfectionofcraftmanshipandinmusicialandacousticaleffects".
TheCathedraltowerisin courseofbeingpreparedfor
thereceptionofthebellswhich willbesolemnlyblessedbefore beinginstalled.Whenthework ofinstallationiscompleteda specialinaugurationceremony willbeheldontheoccasionof whichthebellswillbeheard bythepublicforthefirsttime.

Theideawasinauguratedby FatherCaseythreeyearsago, whenmenfromtheoutlying portionsofhisparishwereinvited,togetherwithofficersof theDiocesanExecutive,topartakeofaspiritualandsocial treatalongwithmembersand prospectivemembersfromYork itself.
Thespiritualtreatisalways providedbyavisitingpriest. Thisyeartall,andfriendly FatherHawkinsS.J.,cameup fromSt.Louisschool.forthe occasion.

Inproposingthetoastof"The HolyNameSociety,"the branch'svicepresident,Pat Marwick,pointedoutthatin receivingHolyCommunionon theSecondSundayeveryman hadthecompanyofthreeand ahalfthousandmeninthis Archdiocesealone.Tothose menwhowouldnotjointhe Societybecausetheywerenot goodenough",heexplained thattheprimaryaimofthe Societywastohelpitsmemberstofulfiltheirspiritual duties.Theonlyreasonwhy theSociety,theChurchand everyorganisationwithinthe Church*existedwasbecauseits memberswere"notgoodenough"andneededassistanceand guidance.
Mr.E.C.B.Henderson,in replyingtothetoastadvisedthe membersoftheYorkbranchto roundupsomeofthe"cleanskins"and"brand"thembeforesomeoneelseorsomeother organizationbrandedthemwith someotherbadge.Heurgedall Catholicmentobeproudof theirfaithandtheirbadge.They belongedtoaworldwidebody ofmillionsofmembers;thatin itselfshouldbeenoughtomake Catholicsproudinsteadof ashamedoftheirreligion.

PriortotheJubileeDay(May 9),theChildrenofSt.Mary's School,Broomewatchedwith greatexcitementthepainting anderectionofaflagpole whichhadbeengraciouslypresentedtoWeschoolbyMr.D. Farrell.
Fortheboysitwasnotbeing erectedquicklyenough.Thepatienceofallthenativeandcolouredchildrendemandsthat thethingbedoneonthehop.To getthisdonetheboysgaveup theirplayandhelpedtheother generousboys,whoofferedtheir services,todigthenecessary holes.

TheSt.Brigid'sParentsandFriends'association,MidlandJunction,reviewedtheiryear'sactivitiesattherecentannualgeneralmeeting,when thepresidentreadtheannualreporttoagood attendanceofmembers.
Oneofthemostinteresting featuresofthereportwasthe amountofworkthatcanbeaccomplishedbywilling"busy bees".Therewerequiteafew oftheseduringtheyearandthe savinginmoneytotheparish wasconsiderable.
Asheltershedfortheboys waserected;thedesksintwo classroomswererepairedand painted;andalargesectionof thedividingfencewasrenewed.
Thebiggestjobundertaken, however,wasthepreparationof drainsandtrenchesfortheconnectionoftheschooltothesewerage.Inviewofheavysanitationcharges,itwasdecidedto

applyforthisconnectioh.Approvalbeinggranted,acallwas madeforvolunteerstodothe diggingrequired,andthisappealreceivedamostencouragingresponsefromthemen.
Anyoneacquaintedwiththe clayofMidlandJunctionwill realisethat"spadework"means spadeworkindeed.Itisestimatedthatthesavingtotheparish wasinthevicinityof£200and themenaretobecongratulated onaveryfineeffort.Theschool hasnowbeenconnectedandis oneofthefirstbuildingsinMidlandtohavethisamenity;andwhatismoreimportant,ratesin thefuturewillbeconsiderably lessthanthoseofthepastyear.

Buttheyweresoanxiousto learn,andsowelldisposedto practisetheirreligionthatto workamongstthembecamea labouroflove.Theythronged inthousandstotheMissions waitedpatientlyfordaystogo toConfessionandHolyCommunion,tohavetheirchildren baptised,theirsickattended,and inmanycasestheirmarriages rectified.
Inthesecircumstancesfrom earlymorntilllateatnightthe Missionshadscarcelyamoment theycouldcalltheirown.In additiontheclimatewassooppressivethatthestrongestconstitutionwaslikelysoontobecomeenfeebled.Onhisfirsttrip Fr.Brennanenduredthisfor sixyearsandthenreturnedto Irelandtorecuperate.
Hewasnotlongathome whenheseemedtoheartheFilipinochildrencallinghimtoreturnandworkoncemoreamong them.Returnhedid,this timeasRector,withathorough knowledgeoftheirlanguage, andawillingnesstoliveanddie amongstthem.Hewassoon busypublishingacatechismand prayer-bookintheirownvernacular,translatingintoitseveral ofourwellknownCatholic hymns,andsomeofhisown whichweresungwithenthusiasmonallhismissions.
Afteranothersixyearsof fruitfulworkinthePhilippines hewastransferredtoAustralia hisadoptedcountry.Hiszeal forsoulswasasardentasever. Buthisconstitutionwasno longerrobust.Hecontinuedto givemissionsandretreats throughoutAustraliaandNew Zealand,untilhishealthbecame soseriouslyunderminedthathe hadtoretirefromactivemissionarylife.Exceptbymiracle therewasnohopeofhisrestorationtoperfecthealth,butby skilfulmedicalandhospital treatmenthislifewasprolonged beyondallexpectations.
Allthroughlifehewasaman ofprayer.Unlessitwasphysicallyimpossibletodoso,he saidMasseverydaysincehis ordination,andinadditionhe heardasmanyMassesashe could.Asarulewhenmeeting peoplehissalutationandhis farewellwasaprayer.When unabletosayMasShereceived HolyCommunionifatallpos- sible,andspentmostoftheday withhis'Rosary-beadsinhand. HislastMasswascelebrated intheMonasteryOratprythree
daysbeforehedied.Then bronchialpneumoniawascontracted,andthisinadditionto hisotherailmentsmadedeath inevitable.OnceagainhereceivedtheLastSacraments,was conveyedtothehospitaland diedpeacefullyonFridaynight.
OnSaturdaynighthisremains wereremovedtotheMonastery Churchandplacedbeforethe altarofOurMotherofPerpetualSuccour,devotiontowhomhe fosteredallthroughlife.
OnSundayitwasmostedifyingtoseepeopleinlargenumbersprayingaroundhiscoffin aftereachMass,andagainaftereveningDevotionsatwhich Fr.TaltyC.S.S.R.,thenewRector,madetouchingreferenceto Fr.Brennan'szealouslabours andsaintlylife.
Thegreatesttributeofallwas paidtohismemoryonMonday whenHisGraceArchbishop Prendivillepresidedatthe SolemnRequiemOfficeand Massofferedforthereposeof hissoul.Practicallyallthe diocesanpriestsaroundPerth werepresent,andwiththem representationsfromallthereligiousOrders-Obates,Jesuits, Vincentians,Franciscans,PallottinesChristianBrothersfrom everyHouse,Sistersfromevery ConventinPerth,andalarge congregationofthelaity.

Otheractivitiesincludedthe Christmaspartyruntomarkthe breakingupoftheschoolyear, theprovisionofsportingequipment,andwindowblindstoreplacethosewornout.
Theraisingofmoneyfell mainlyontheshouldersofthe womenmembersandtheymade averygoodjobofit.Themost consistentmoneyraiserwasthe Weeklituckshop.Oneofthe mostencouragingfeaturesof 'thiswasthesupportreceived fromthe"oldtimers"ofthe parish.Manyarenowunableto doanyactiveworkbutthey showedtheirgoodwillbysendingalongregulardonationsof cashorfood.
Thetuckshophasstarted againthisyearandafurther appealismadetothegenerosity ofparishioners.Theothermain moneyraiserwasthefeteat Greenmount.These,paddedwith theprofitsofothersmallerefforts,enabledtheAssociationto meetallcommitmentsforthe year.

Areallythrillingscene, whichtakesplacenormallyin tropicalforest,isafightbetweenlargehuntingwaspsand largespidersAtropicalforestseemsthemostsuitable backgroundforsuchsavage duels.Ifitisafighttoafinish, thenitisatoss-upwhichwill win,theduellistsaresowell matched.
Theseparticulirgroupsof huntingwasps,whichpreyexclusivelyuponspiders,arespeciaflyequippedfordealingwith acreaturethatiscunningand strongandcangiveaverypoisonousbite.Theyareveryquick inaction,soistheirprey.The parryandthrustmaylastfor sometime,withswiftmovesand counter-moves,untiltheopportunitycomesforeitherofthem todealthefatalblow.
Ihavebeenabletoobserve somescenesinthislittle'drama manyatime,buthavenothail thechancetoseethebattle throughfromthebeginning. Theycomeoutatdusk.Ihave wachedthemoftenwhenthey firstleavetheirburrows.They haveadrinkfromwetmoss,or leaves,andthenstarthunting theirprey.Theydonotweave snaresbutroamalloverthe ground,feedingmostlyoncockroachesandchickets,andsmall mammals,suchasmice.Ihave foundoneeatinganightlizardagecko.

HewasPontiusPilate.Inhis personPilateemergednotas thecruelRomangovernorwe havereadabout,butasabalancedmanofacontemplative turnofmind;amanwhowas thevictimofcircumstances;indeed,hemightalmostberegardedasamartyr.
Theportraitwasjustalittle bitdetrop.Itwasthereforenot entirelycredible.Canweseriouslyentertainthethought thatPilateisdeservingofso muchsympathy?Thiswould surelyputthetragedyofJesus inanunaccustomedlight.But Mr.Hynes,asPilate,wascompellingandmemorable.Hecould havebeenmoresoifhehad paidmoreattentiontomakeupandhislines.Thesedefects servedtohighlighttheextraordinarydifficultiesthatconfront aproducer-player.
Onewhorangtrueenough wasBalbus(JohnFormby), ommanderoftheRomangarison.Hisvoicegavehimaway, butheshedahealthymasculinityoverthegeneralscene. JosephofArimathaea(HarroldWalsh)wasimmature,and wesawverylittleofPeter(Bill Connaughton).CarmelMoran wasZillah(ablindwoman), andothersinthecastwereRon Jefferies,BrianPeachey,WarrenLucas,BertMurphy,Gay, Meekins,andJimO'Hara.
Itwasanambitiousundertakingforastageassmallas theAssembly's.Ingeneralthe settingswereadequate,thecostumesquitegood.Dispositionof theplayerslackedpolish,and revisedlightingmighthave donemuchtomakethelast scenemoreeffective.Acoupleof "curtains"werewellmanaged andleftdramaintheair.The closeoftheplaywasthoughtprovoking.Thoughnotatoplineproduction,theplayprovidedevidenceofimaginative developmentintheTherry Society.
