CanaBoyKnowWithCertainty WhetherHeShouldBeaPriest?
-HaveIavocationtothe priesthood?"Howmanyboys atthepresentmomentarewonderingandpuzzlingoverthis question?Asyetunspoiled, withalllifebeforethem,they arelookingtothegreatestcallingintheworldandsayingto themselves:"ShallIbea priest?"Itisimportant,with theirownhappiness,perhaps, andthepossiblehappinessof manyothersdependingonit, thattheiranswershouldbethe rightone.How,then,isaboy toknowwhetherGodiscalling himtobeapriest?
SUITABILITY.
Inthefirstplace,Goddoes notcallanyonetothepriesthoodunlessheissuitable. It goeswithoutsayingthatGod choosesforpriestsonlythose whomHehascreatedandendowedwithwhatisnecessary. Theserequirementsarethree:-

(1)Onewhothinksofbecomingapriestmusthave averagehealth.Aboywho issicklyandinindifferent healthwillnotbecalledby Godtothestrenuouslifeofa priest.
(2)Hemusthaveaverage intelligence.Onewhohaslittleaptitudeforstudy,andis belowaverageintelligence, willnotnormallyreceivea vocation.Itmustbeunderstood,however,thatnooneis requiredtobeagenius.No boyhastobeduxofhisclass beforehecanthinkofbecomingapriest.Allthatis neededisaverageability.
(3)Hemusthave.average piety.Thismeansthathe mustbeanordinarygoodCatholicboy.Nooneisasked tobeasaintbeforeheaspires tothepriesthood.Allthatis necessaryisasolidall-round

INTERIORVOCATION.
Amongtheboyswhoaresuitableinthisway,Godenlightens themindsandstrengthensthe willsofcertainones-whomHe Himselfchooses-towanttobecomepriestsforsomegoodreason.Thisiscalledtheinterior vocation,becauseitis,asit were,withinoneself.Sometimesthisenlightenmentmay comeafterHolyCommunion,or whenaboyisreadingagood book,listeningtoasermon, makingavisittotheBlessed Sacrament,sayinghisprayers, assistingatMass,oratanytime atall.Wheneveritcomes,God helpstheboytowanttobecome apriestinordertosavehisown soulbetter,tohelpsaveother people'ssouls,orbecausehe hecandomoregoodasapriest,
orbecausehereallylovesGod asonlyanaveragegood-hearted boycanloveHim
THEDIFFICULTY. Itisthisinteriorvocation,of course,whichcausesallthe bother.Insomeyoungpeople itisaconstantthing,whichis thereallthetime.Thesehappy onesarethefew.Inmostboys itisstrongenoughforawhile, thenitfadesaway.Thesesame boysnowwarttobeairmen,or engine-drivers,orjustRedIndians.Later,thefeelingfor thepriesthoodcomesback.It isthesamethingoveragain. Thesameoldquestionshaveto befaced:"HaveIavocationto thepriesthood?HowamIto knowwhatGodwants?"
EXTERIORVOCATION.
Ifeverythingdependedon thisinteriorvocationalone, manywouldbedeceived.But
thereisanothercall,whichis certainanddefinite.Itisthe officialcalloftheChIrch,which comesonthedayofordination. GodspeaksthroughtheChurch. andbymeansoftheordination ceremonysays:thisyoungman istobeapriest. Wecallthistheexteriorvocation,becauseitiswholly outsideoneself.Itisverymuch moreimportantthantheinteriorcalling.Aboycouldbe wavering,undecided,andeven mistakenabouthisinteriorattractiontothepriesthood,butif heperseveresthroughhisseminarycourseandispresented forordination,hehasfromGod atruevocation.Itisdefinite, certain,andinnowaybasedon vagueanddeceptiveemotion.
