Amessageofloyaltytothe thronewasdeliveredbythe chairmanoftheAssociated Youthcommittee,followedby themessagefromtheKingread bytheChiefJustice(SirJohn Dwyer)whorepresentedthe Governor(SirJamesMitchell.)

ArollcallofEmpireFlags andthereadingofamessageto theyouthofEnglandwasfollowedbytheimpressivemarch pastof20youthorganizations.

ThemarchthroughPerth concludedfortheCatholic groupwithRosaryandBenedictionoftheBlessedSacramentatSt.Mary'sCathedral, HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedandgavePontificalBenediction.Theloweringofthe MovementbannersatBenedictionprovedaninspiringspectacle.

Theoccasionalsermonwas deliveredbyRev.J.McNamara. "TheobservanceofEmpire YouthSunday,"hesaid,"isdesignedtoemphasisethecontributionthatyoungpeoplecan maketotheculturalandmoral unityandwelfareoftheBritish Empire.Thatweallhavesuch acontributiontomakenotonly totheBritishEmpireortoAustraliabuttotheworldatlarge thepreacheradded,isanidea alreadyfamiliartoyouas membersofCatholicAction Movements."

Ascitizens,asmembersofthe ChurchandasCatholicActio-

niststheywereresponsiblefor thespiritualandtemporalwell beingofothers.Thegoodthey did,andtheeviltoo,reverberatedinthelivesofthosethey metinthecourseoftheirdaily lives.Theymustseetoitthat theirinfluenceonotherswas good.Itwouldbegoodifth.y livedtheChristianlife,thus

enablingtheinfluenceofChrist Himselfworkingthroughthem toreachtheworldinwhich theylived.

TheyweremembersofCatholicActionMovement:-inorder thattheirinfluenceforgood mightbegivenimpetusanddirection.ItwasforthemthereforetoshareOurDivineLord's

attitudetothemultitudes, "movedwithpity,"asIfw. "atseeingthemharriedanI abjectlikesheepthathaveno shepherd." InresponsetoHisinvitation theylabourtocurethediseases andinfirmitiesthatwereaffectingtheworld,namely,those wrongattitudesandideas,

thoseprejudicesthatwere,as itwere,abarrierbetween ChristandthosewhomHe loves.IttheysucceededinreplacingfalseideaswithChristian attitudesthenthosewithwhom theylived,andintimetheworm atlarge,wouldhavea1,, chancetocometoknowa:1d serveChristOurKing.

Thelastgeneralmeeting, heldonMay1,showedavery goodattendance.Attheconclusion,thechaplaingaveaninterestingtalkontheimpedimentstomarriage,which provedveryinstructivetoall.

Astherehasbeenanumber ofnewmembersthisyear,an enrolmentandbadge-presentationnighthasbeendecidedon, tobeheldinAugust,theexact datenotyetfixed.Allthose memberswhohavenotyetfilledinanenrolmentform,are askedtodosoatthenext meeting.

Thegirlsalsosuggestedput- tingonanothercombinedconcertaboutSeptember,ifthe boyswereinterested.Itwas thoughtthatacommitteewould beselected,andallarrange- mentsmadeforpracticeto begin. AreportoneachBasketball teamwasreceived,which provedsatisfactory.

IsOutstandingSuccess andOurbadge-givingceremony, socialwhichfollowed, provedtobeagreatsuccess witharecordattendanceof bothN.C.G.M.andY.C.W. members.Therewerealsomany parishionersandmembersof otherbranchespresent.The orderoftheeveningwasatalk bythepresidentsofbothMovements,distributionofbadges bytheRev.E.Sullivan,followedbyaninterestingad- dress.Asocialwasthenheld, andeightitemsrenderedby membersofbothMovements, followedbysupper.Altogether,theeveningseemedtobemost enjoyabletoallthosepresent. GeneralmembersareremindedoftheirmeetingonThursday,May17,at8.15p.m. Ourfortnightlydanceswill re-commenceasfromSaturday, May26.

SacredHeart,Highgate,Primaryschoolchildrenwillgoback toabrandnewverandahfloor astheresultofalong,hard day'sworkbyamassattackof "busybee"fathersonMay5. Ajobwhichcouldhavegone wrongatmanypointskept goingjustrightwhenabattle againsttheclockwaswonand avaguelyestimatedorderof 4,000feetofflooringturned, outcorrecttothelastfloorboard.Someofthefathersare leftwonderingifSt.Joseph, patronsaintofcarpenters.did notguideinthetask.

TheSistersandthechildren hadaskedSt.Josephspecially tohelp.Topointanexampleto themanygenerationswhich maywalkoverthenewfloora statueofSt.Joseph,inashrine madeoutoftheleftoverfloorboards,willeventuallybeput upontheverandah.

Theoldfloorhadsurvived50 yearsoftramping,shuffling andrunningchildrens'feet sincetheschoolhadbeenbuilt atthebeginningofthecentury. GoodinsomeplacesitwasgettingthininothersandadecisionwastakentogiveitaJubilee.

Anextraurgentcallwas-sent outforhelpandSaturdaymorningfoundafirstafew,and thenveryquicklynearly20 menrippingandtearingupthe oldverandahwhileothers eta&

OldAquinians'Hockey TeamsinTwoDefeats

Thereserveteamhadtobesatisfiedwithanotherdefeat,1-0, thistimeatthehandsofSuburban.Bothteamswererather lostplayingonaslippery,wet ground,whichdidnotappearto havebeenmarkedsincelast season.Thegamewasquite sluggish,andlackedeventemporaryburstsofgoodplay. Howeverdamptheconditions were,someofourboyswould notbebeatenatanycost,and prominentamongthesewereJ. Best(ingoal),B.O'Leary,and J.Rodoreda.Suburban'sthoroughlydeservedtheirvictory undertheadverseconditions.

TheB1gradeopenedtheiraccountfortheseasonbydefeatingUni.,4-1.Aftertheirfirst gamelastweek,muchimprovementwasseen,especiallyinthe forwardline.Althoughthe groundwasbad,theywenton toaverygoodwin.D.Walsh playedaverygoodgamein goalsforthefirsttime.The bestplayerswere:Huston, Frazer,andR.MelvinThe goal-scorerswere:Frazer(2), MelvinandMcNamara(1each).

HereinAustraliatheywould findfreedom.Theyoughtto availthemselvesofitbybeing

fugeintheirhourofneed.They musttrytolearnthelanguage andadaptthemselvestolocal customs. Australiawasofferingthem freedom,peace,opportunity.In returntheyhadavaluablecontributiontomaketothebuildingofthisyoungland.Coming astheydidfromcountriessteepincultureandage-oldtradition, theirinfluenceinshapingthe culturaldevelopmentofAustraliacouldbeimmense.They lovedthelandsoftheirbirth. Thattheyhadeveryrighttodo. Butwhilepreservingthatlove ofhomeland,theymustrealise theirobligationstowardsthe landoftheiradoption.

InthisrespecttheCatholicChurchinAustraliahasalreadymadesomestrikingc2ntributions,insomeinstances quitedisproportionatetoitsnumericalstrengthorsocial significance.Thisreflectionisparticularlytrueofthepast decade.TheCatholicpenetrationofthesocialandpoliticalmilieuxhasnotbeencharacterisedtoanyextentby directpersonalactionsomuchasbytheimpactofofficial doctrineonsociologicalthought.OftheelevenSocialJusticestatementsissuedinasmanyconsecutiveyears,five havebeenpromulgatedtinderthedirectauthorityofthe AustralianHierarchy,andtheotherswiththeformalapprovaloftheEpiscopalCommitteeonCatholicAction.Since thefirststatementappeared10yearsago,1,800,000copies havebeensoldinapopulationofabouthalfamillionadult CatholicsscatteredoveranareaasbigastheUnitedStates. Theyhavebeenfeaturedinthesecularpressandwidely praisedbypublicmenofallpoliticalparties.

Iamsureallofyouare puzzledatreceivingaletter fromsomeoneyoudonotknow. Asyoucanseefromtheaddress onthisletter,Iamwritingit fromaSeminary.Howmany ofyouknowwhataSeminary is?Itisnotaplacewhere peopleareburied-thatisa cemetery.Aseminaryisaplace whereboyswhohaveadesure tobecomepriestsaretrained.

Atthepresenttimevolunteers arebeingcalledforthearmy. Nowourarmyneedsleadersofficers.Sodoesanotherarmy, thearmyofChrist.Inthisarmy alltheCatholicsarethesoldiers, thepriestsandbishopsarethe leaders.Justasintheordinaryarmy,theofficersmustbe trained,so,too,inChrist's army_ThatiswhattheSeminaryis,atrainingschoolfor Christ'sleaders.

OurSeminaryinGuildfordis dividedintotwohouses,the JuniorHouseandtheSenior House.Thejuniorsarethe boyswhoareintheclassesfrom eighthstandard,orsub-junior, toleaving.Whenaboyhas passedhisLeavinghegoesinto theSeniorHouse,wherehe startstostudythesubjectsthat aremoredirectlyconcerned withthepriesthood.e

ThedailylifeintheSeminaryisveryinteresting.Itconsistsofprayer,studyandrecreation.Webegintheday

withmorningprayers,meditation,andHolyMass.After breakfastwehavehalf-anhour'srecreation,andthen classesbegin.Theclassesare muchthesameasyouhaveat yourpresentschool.These classescontinueuntilfour o'clock.Wehavetimeofffor morningteaanddinner;after schoolwehaveafewminutes forafternoontea.Thenweare freetoplaysportuntilfive o'clock,whenwehaveashower andprepareforstudy.Asfar assportisconcerned,weplay everything:football,cricket, tennis,hockey,soccer,softball, andanyothergameofwhichwe canthink.Insummerwealso swimintheSwanriver,which runspastourproperty.

Atsixo'clockwesaytheRosarytogether,tothankOurLady forwatchingoverusduringthe day,andtoaskherhelpinour studies,forwedonotforgetthat sheistheHelpofChristiansand theSeatofWisdom.TheRosaryisfollowedbyteaandthen anhalf-hour'srecreationuntil studytime.Afternightprayersweretiretobedat9.30or 10 Thisis,inshort,ourdaily programme.

Iamsureyouareallasking yourselveswhyapriestneedsso muchtraining.Well,asItold youinthebeginning,apriest hastoleadhispeople;forthis, hemusthaveknowledge,but, aboveall,hemustbeholy,for "asapriestissoshallhispeople be."Thisknowledgeandholinessareobtainedthrougha priest'syearsintheSeminary.

To-daymorethaneverbefore theworldneedspriests,and goodpriestsatthat.Inthe worldwehavescientistsgalore whohaveinventedintheatom bombameansofsendinghundredsofpeopletoGod,butwe havesofewprieststobringGod tohundredsofpeople.Why thisshortage?Whyisitthat sofewwanttotakeupthe grandestjobofall?Whydo wehaveasufficiencyofpostmen,butchers,bakers,andso on,injobsofimportancein theirownway,yetsofewinthe mostimportantjobmencando?

Ithinkthatthereasonisthis: weareafraidofthejob;we passofftheinvitationwitha careless:"Aw!Godcouldn't

meanmetobeapriest;afellow hastobeholy;I'mnotthetype; there'rehundredsbetterthanI forthatjob."

YouforgetthatOurLord choseyourtype.qnfactHe choseroughandreadyfishermenwhomusthavebeenawfullythick-headedandirritating atfirsttoHim,andyettheydid notputHimoffandtellHim thattheywerenotHishind. Theyknewonlytoowelltheir failings,asweknowours.They werenotbetterthanweare, yet,becausetheyansweredHis call,Hemadethempriestsand evensaints.

Buttogetbacktothepoint. WhydidIcallthePriesthood thegreatestcallingonearth? Whyisitimportantthatwe havepriests?Well,justconsideroneaspectofthepriest's day,oneevent,theSacrificeof theMass."IneveryMass,Our Lordistheshieldbetweenheavenandearth,betweenGod's justiceandoursins."When weconsiderthatallthehorrors ofwar,offamineanddisease, areonlyatasteoftheindignationofGod,wehavesomeidea oftheimportanceoftheMassin theworldwhichisto-dayturningitsbackonGod.Noscientist,bendingoverhismicroscope inthelaboratory,nodoctorin theoperatingtheatre,oratthe patient'sbedside,nogeneral commandinganarmy,hasajob thatcancompareinimportance withthatofthehumblestpriest. Andthepriestto-dayisneeded morethanever:thereareso manypeoplewhomightbeconvertedifonlytheyheardthe teachingofOurLord.

Nowwheredoyoufitin?

Righthere.Ifyoufeelthat youwouldliketohelpinthe greatestcauseonearth,tobea volunteerinthemostpowerful armyonearth,thearmyof

usedforthereligiousjuridical personconcernedorforpublic welfareenterprisesaided by' suchjuridicalpersons."

Thisprovisionwillbeviewed withreliefbythemanyreligiousgroupsengagedinsocial welfareworkasitwillfree themfromthenecessityofincorporatingtheirsocialwork separatelyunderthenewsocial servicelaw.

ForCatholics,oneofthemost importantprovisionsofthenew lawistherulelaiddownthat thecommitteeofthreewhich mustserveasspokesmenfor religiousinstitutionsmaybe appointedinaccordancewith theChurch'sownregulations, i.e.,inaccordancewithCanon Law.

Thenewlawspecifically providesalsothatonceareligiousinstitutionhasbeen "authenticated,'theGovernmentis()nodtofollowthe regularcourtprocedureincase itwishestotakeactionagainst suchaninstitution.Thismakes .arbitraryactiononthepartof localofficialsimpossible.

TheBishopsweredealingwiththereportofa RoyalCommissiononpopulation,shortlytobe placedbeforeParliamentforapproval,which would,asacapitalpointamongitsmanyobjectionablefeatures,introduceinstructioninartificial contraceptioninthenationalhealthsystem.

Theydeclaredthatthewhole conceptofthereportisfoundedonfalseandpaganprinciples,thatitspurposeistouse thefamilysimplyasapawn inpopulationplanning,thatthe ideabehinditisanassaulton thelargefamilyandthatthe schemeisatypicalexampleof that"excessofstateaction"recentlycondemnedbytheHoly Father.

TheBishops'statement,issuedaftertheirLowWeek meetinginLondon,readsin part:-

"ThereportoftheRoyal Commission on population raisesissuesofsuchgravityto Catholics,andindeedtoall Christians,thatwefeelbound tocommentuponcertainof theirrecommendations,especiallyasthereportisshortly tobeconsideredbyParliament.

"Thereportistheproductof longandpatientinvestigation ofanextremelycomplexproblemandhightributemustbe paidtoitsauthorsbothfor theirlaboursandfortheskilful marshallingoftheirarguments andconclusions.

(3)Hemusthave.average piety.Thismeansthathe mustbeanordinarygoodCatholicboy.Nooneisasked tobeasaintbeforeheaspires tothepriesthood.Allthatis necessaryisasolidall-round

INTERIORVOCATION.

Amongtheboyswhoaresuitableinthisway,Godenlightens themindsandstrengthensthe willsofcertainones-whomHe Himselfchooses-towanttobecomepriestsforsomegoodreason.Thisiscalledtheinterior vocation,becauseitis,asit were,withinoneself.Sometimesthisenlightenmentmay comeafterHolyCommunion,or whenaboyisreadingagood book,listeningtoasermon, makingavisittotheBlessed Sacrament,sayinghisprayers, assistingatMass,oratanytime atall.Wheneveritcomes,God helpstheboytowanttobecome apriestinordertosavehisown soulbetter,tohelpsaveother people'ssouls,orbecausehe hecandomoregoodasapriest,

THEDIFFICULTY. Itisthisinteriorvocation,of course,whichcausesallthe bother.Insomeyoungpeople itisaconstantthing,whichis thereallthetime.Thesehappy onesarethefew.Inmostboys itisstrongenoughforawhile, thenitfadesaway.Thesesame boysnowwarttobeairmen,or engine-drivers,orjustRedIndians.Later,thefeelingfor thepriesthoodcomesback.It isthesamethingoveragain. Thesameoldquestionshaveto befaced:"HaveIavocationto thepriesthood?HowamIto knowwhatGodwants?"

EXTERIORVOCATION.

Ifeverythingdependedon thisinteriorvocationalone, manywouldbedeceived.But

thereisanothercall,whichis certainanddefinite.Itisthe officialcalloftheChIrch,which comesonthedayofordination. GodspeaksthroughtheChurch. andbymeansoftheordination ceremonysays:thisyoungman istobeapriest. Wecallthistheexteriorvocation,becauseitiswholly outsideoneself.Itisverymuch moreimportantthantheinteriorcalling.Aboycouldbe wavering,undecided,andeven mistakenabouthisinteriorattractiontothepriesthood,butif heperseveresthroughhisseminarycourseandispresented forordination,hehasfromGod atruevocation.Itisdefinite, certain,andinnowaybasedon vagueanddeceptiveemotion.

HOWTODECIDE.

TheIrishGovernmentispresentlyengagedin preparingadraftofanewBillprovidinghealth servicesformothersandchildren,withaviewto overcomingtheobjectionsagainstapreviousdraft onconstitutional,professionalandmoralgrounds.

Itwasthedisputeoverthis previousdraftwhichledtothe resignationofDr.NoelBrowne asMinisterofHealthfromthe coalitiongovernmentheadedby PremierJohnCostellowho,at leasttemporarily,tookoverthe portfolioofDr.Browne.

TheIrishGovernmentispresentlyengagedin preparingadraftofanewBillprovidinghealth servicesformothersandchildren,withaviewto overcomingtheobjectionsagainstapreviousdraft onconstitutional,professionalandmoralgrounds.

Itwasthedisputeoverthis previousdraftwhichledtothe resignationofDr.NoelBrowne asMinisterofHealthfromthe coalitiongovernmentheadedby PremierJohnCostellowho,at leasttemporarily,tookoverthe portfolioofDr.Browne.

Theobjectionsonconstitutionalgroundsaroseovertheinvalidityofaso-called"means test."ThedraftpreparedbyDr. Brownegavetopublicauthoritiestherightanddutytoprovideforthehealthofallchildren,totreattheirailments,to educatetheminregardto health,toeducatewomenin regardtomotherhoodandto provideallwomenwithgynecologicalcare.

TheIrishMedicalAssociation bitterlyopposedDr.Browne's billand,followingaplebiscite, decidednottoparticipateina systemlikethatenvisagedby Dr.Browne.TheIrishHierarchyvoiceditsobjectionson moralgrounds,declaringthat thebillproposedbyDr.Browne was"opposedtoCatholicsocial teaching."

TheBishopssetforththeir objectionsundersevenheadings.Whileexpressingtheirap- proval"ofasaneandlegitimate healthservicewhichwillproperlysafeguardthehealthof mothersandchildren,"the Bishopsdeclaredthemselves opposedtoanyscheme"which initsgeneraltendencymust fosterunduecontrolbythe Stateinaspheresodelicate andsointimitelyconcerned withmoralsasthatwhichdeals withgynaecologyorobstetrics" andwhich"musthaveforpracticalresulttheunduelessening oftheproperinitiativeofindividualsandassociationsand theunderminingofself-reliance."
