NorinrecallingyourgoodworksshouldWefailtomention thespiritofChristiancharitywhichopenedthedoorsofyour countrytowelcomesolargeanumberofthedispossessedvictims ofthewarandofthoseconstrainedtoemigratebyunemployment andthepressureofsurpluspopulations.EspeciallywouldWe commendthesplendidorganisationwhichyou,VenerableBrethren,sopainstakinglyestablishedthroughouttheAustraliannation toensurethattheCatholicsamongthose"NewAustralians" shouldnotlackforreligiousassistanceand,assooftenhappened asaresultofthespiritualneglectoftheemigrant,belosttothe faith.ThisexampleofCatholicActionisworthyofhighcommendation.

AsStatueIsMovedtoAnotherHome

Thesojournofthe"HomePilgrimVirgin"endedafteraweek atthehomeofMr.andMrs. CecilHynes,Waterloo.During theweeklargenumbersgatheredattheHynes'hometohonour OurLady,sometravellinglong distances.Aseachgroupassembled,theRosaryandthe ActofConsecrationyererecited.

Aninspiringsightwastheassemblyofagroupofschoolchildren,towhomatalkonOur LadyofFatimawasgiven,

Ontheclosingnight,more than100peoplegatheredtorecitetheRosary.Afterwards, thestatuewascarriedfromthe housethroughaguardofChildrenofMary,tobetransported tothehomeofMr.Laurie Hynes. Aremarkablescenewasthe escortof27carswhichacornpaniedtheprogressofthe statue,whichwascarriedby twoChildrenofMary.Tile P.EiversandMr.C.Hynesled themechanisedpilgrimage.

Onitsarrivalathishome, Mr.LHynesreceivedthe statueandcarrieditthrougha guardofhonourintohishome, whereheenthroneditonaspecialaltar.

TheRosaryandtheActof Consecrationwererecitedbyall present.Hymnsinhonourof OurLadyconcludedthedevotionalevening.

ThelastmeetingoftheCatholicTeachers'guildtookthe formofalecturemeeting,when MissG.Parkergaveatalkon herimpressionofthePilgrimage toRomeandavisittoEngland andtheContinent.Thosepresentthoroughlyenjoyedthe eevning,andthankedMissParkerforherentertainingand interestingtalk.

ThefirstannualgeneralmeetingoftheIrish clubwasheldintheparishhall,Highgate,on April26.Therewasalargeattendanceofactual andintendingmembers.

Atthebeginningofthemeetingthesecretary'sreport,outliningtheClub'sactivitiessince itsinception,wasread.Froma socialpointofview,thereport stated,theclubhadbeena success,asithadbroughttogetheroldandnewimmigrants fromIreland,aswellasmany youngAustraliansofIrish ancestry.

Thebalancesheetwasthen read,revealingasoundfinancialposition,despitethe heavyexpensesincurredduring theyearinprovidingameeting placefortheclubandahall foritsdancesandsocials.

ThetemptationthatconfrontsCatholicsto-dayisthe temptationof}Withdrawal,ofturningawayfromactiveparticipationincommunityandworldaffairs,ofabandoningthe sordidworldtoitsownatomicdestruction.Thepresent secularistatmosphereinsocietyissohostiletosupernatural valuesthatCatholics,whodefendthesupernaturalviewof life.areadmittedlyhemmedinandhardpressedonevery side.

Therehavebeenperiodsinhistorywhenadefensiveattitudewasessentialforsurvival,whentokeepasmallundamagedlightstillburningwasallthatcouldbedemanded ofthefaithful.Thiswithdrawalbecamenecessary,for example,intheDarkAges.Theobstaclestoanintegral Christianlifeweresooverwhelmingthatonlyinmonasterieswassuchlifepracticable.Onlytherewasculture ofanykindsafeguardedandpassedontotheworldinbettertimes.Suchconditionsmayyetprevailinthiscountryofours.WemayyetbeenteringanotherDarkAge whenallspiritualvalueswillbedeniedandallCatholic participationintheactivelifeofnationsbecomeimpossible.'

Thattime,however,hasnotyetarrived;itmaynever arrive.Wedonotknowthefuture.\Vhat'wedoknow isthatthereisadangerofdefeatism,adangerofmistakinginactionforpatience,andslothforwisdom.IftheCatholiclaitypossessedthecourageanddynamismthatour faithdemands,smallasournumbersare,wecouldchange theworld,wecouldconquerit,wecouldrestoreallthings inChrist.TheinactionandineffectivenessofCatholics andtheCatholicpress,isoneofthemostseriousaccusations levelledagainstusto-day.

TheCatholicpressisfulfillinganimportantroleinthe life.oftheChurch.Itisthefaithfulallyofthepreaching andteachingapostolateoftheChurchandanardentfoeof theheresiesand"isms"thatthreatentheverylifeofChrist's MysticalBody.TheCatholicpresshasagreatmission andagreatdestiny,especiallyinthiscriticalhourforall humanity.Judgingbytherelativelysmallcirculation whichourCatholicpapersenjoy,itwouldseemthatour peopleareasyetunawareoftheimportanceofthePress Apostolate.Inthesedays,whenpeopleformtheiropinionsandregulatetheirlivesalmostentirelybytheirdaily readingofnewspapers,itisamatterofthegravestimportancethattheCatholicnewspaperholdprideofplace amongstthejournalsthatfindtheirwayintoourhomes. Asquirrel,runningroundthe baseofatreetrunk,camesuddenlyuponhimandgavehima greatfright.Hecowereddown andsnarled.Butthesquirrel wasjustasbadlyscaredand scamperedupatreeoutof reach.Thenhetriedtocatch aptarmigan,butshepeckedhim onthenoseandfrightenedhim off.

Thelife-sizestatueisbuiltin a20-foot-highgrottomadeof specially-markedlimestone,and lookstowardsIreland'sholy mountain,CroaghPatrick,which towersoverthevillage,afew hundredyardsaway.Theshrine isbuiltonthespotwhere,in penaldays,thepeopleofMurriskcongregatedbeforeclimbingupthemountainsidetohear Massamongtherocks.

Thefactthatapriestof FatherMatthew'svirtueand earnestnessstoodatthehead ofthemovementgavetoitan attractivenessandappealit couldnototherwisehopefor.

Thehouseofthehumblefriar nowbecametheMeccawhither theeyesofthewholecitywere turned.Newaccessionsarrived daily;themeetingsofthe schoolroombegantooverflow, untilitfinallybecamenecessarytofindmorecommodious quarters.

Forthispurposeanimmense building,whichhadbeenused asahorse-bazaar,openedits doors,andintoitthenewly-

awakenedpopulaceflockedin thousands.Thenamesonthe rolloftotalabstinenceincreasedbeyondallexpectations. Withinthreemonthsthey numbered25,000;infivemonths 131,000;inthebeginningof December1838,therewere 156,000;inthefollowingmonth, January1839,over200,000had signedthepledge.

Towardstheendof1839, FatherMatthewbeganhisnation-widecampaign.Hisvisits tothecitiesandtowns,north andsouth,boregreatfruit.The timehadcomewhenallIrelandseemedtohaveaccepted thesweetyokeofsobriety.The bishopsandclergyofthe variousdioceseswerenotslow torealisethevalueofthenew movement.Theirco-operation wasindispensableforreform ofthegreatmasses,afflicted withtheviceofintemperance.

Anotherconsolingaspectof FatherMatthew'svigorous campaignwastheheartysupportandencouragementhe receivedfromthose,who,by theirpositionandenlightenment,couldgivethestampof soliditytohisaccomplishments. Foremostamongthesewas DanielO'Connell.Thegreat Liberatorbecamealoyal adherenttothecauseoftotalabstinence,andbypreceptand exampledidmuchtopromote thecauseoftemperance.

Fr.O'Brienemphasisedthe necessityofhavingclearideas onthissubject,modernsongs, booksandfilmsveryoftenpresentinganerroneousideatothe impressionablemindsofyouth.

"Godhasgiventomanand womancertainappetiteswhich giveanaturalpleasurewhen used,"saidFatherO'Brien.He thenreviewedthesubjectof eatinganddrinkingcommentingonthepleasurederived fromtheseacts.

Soalsowithregardstothe sexact.Ifdoneaccordingto God'slawitwasgoodasitwas partofGod'splanforthecontinuationoftheworld.Pleasure fromsexinitselfwasgoodand noble.Tobegood,however,it mustfitinwithGod'scomplete plan.InGod'splansexual pleasurewastobeenjoyedonlybythosemarried,inorderto propagatethehumanrace.It wasanabuseofGod'splanforsexualintercoursetobeenjoyed outsideofmarriage.

Attheconclusionoflunch, theconferenceresumedwitha talkbytheRev.E.Sullivan, diocesanchaplaintobothMo. vements.Dr.Sullivancommencedhistalkbyreviewing thesecondpartoftheSouth PerthconferenceofAugust 1950.Itwasexplainedthat,in companionshipsbetweena youngmanandwoman,there mustalwaysbethequalitiesof truefriendship.Therequalities were:

(1)Thatitwasmorallyhelp- fultobothparties.

(2)Therewasagenuine basisofagreementbetweenthe parties.

(3)Theirmutuallove.was characterizedbyaspiritofself sacrifice.

Unlessthosequalitieswere presenttruefriendshipdidnot existandthecompanionship shouldbediscontinued.

Doctorthenexplainedthe twoformsofsexattraction. Firstly,generalsexattraction, whichconsistedoftheinstinctiveinterestinmembersofthe oppositesexandthedesireto meetandmixwiththem.Secondly,personalsexattraction, whenaboyandgirlfeltattractedtoeachotherexclusively. Yearsof manhoodadolescenceandyoung orwomanhoodwere yearsofformationofideason marriageandasdelegatespresentwereofthat"between years"groupitwouldbewise ifdelegatesconsideredboth ideasandsawasaresult,that humanlovewasabeautiful thing,andtheneedofasincere preparationformarriage.

ChastityIsNecessary InMarriageApproach

"Chastityisapositivevirtue," continuedDr.Sullivan,"andis relatedtoothervirtues,espe- ciallythevirtueofcharity. However,thereisadifficulty whichgivesrisetothe,first questiontobediscussedinyour discussiongroupsnamely:Is commonCatholicteachingofa sorttogivetheimpressionthat relationshipbetweenthesexes isalwaysorgenerallytreated inthenatureofdangertovirtue?"Dr.Sullivanthenexp-lainedthecorrectattitude,that generalandpersonalsexattractioninthemselveshadnodirect bearingonthevirtueofchastity.Theywerethingsapart. However,manifestationsoflove didactoftenasastimulantto thesexualappetiteevenif unintentional.Thepracticeof thevirtueofchastitywasbindingonall,butatpresentthe conferencewasconcernedwith theunmarried.Chastitywasa necessarypartofthegeneral approachtomarriage.

ProfessorRibamadetheimportantdiscoverywhenhewas examiningaveryoldcodex (manuscript)knowntobea fragmentofaworkofDanteof thefirsthalfofthe14thcentury. HeproveditwasDante's handwritingbyachemicalexaminationoftheinkandbycomparisonwiththeonlyothercertainmanuscriptofDante.The fragmentcontainspartofPurgatoriodescribingbasreliefsand carriesroughmarginaldesigns ofthebasreliefswhichalso provedtobeDante'swork.

Thesecondconcertinthe 1951Subscriptionseriessawthe reappearanceofanoldPerth favouriteinHenryKrips.Perhapstheadjectiveshouldbe "firm,"soastoavoidconfusion, but,inanycase,thenounis correct,aswasprovedbythe applausewhichgreetedhisentrance.Nodoubtthatparticularovationwaspersonalrather thananticipatory,buttheapplauseattheendofthenight wasforaveryfineperformance ofBerlioz'smasterpiece,"SymphonieFantastique."

Therearemanyotherswho willcriticisethechoiceofthis workforperformancebyour 'smallorchestra-evenwhen augmented-anddadmittedly themusiclosessomeofthebalanceoforchestralcolourfor whichBerliozwasfamous.Neverheless,theperformanceon Mondaynightwassocloseto thecomposer'sintentionthatit justifiedtheexperiment.With theexceptionoftheendofthe Allegrosectioninthefirst movement,Kripsheldtheorchestratogetherin'afinely-proportioned,well-contrasted.performancethatleftonewitha feelingofadmirationforthe conductor,andprideinour players.Itmustalsohave givengreatpleasuretoHenry Kripshimselftoseehowthe standard'oftheorchestra,which hedidsomuchtoraise,has goneonimprovingsincehis changetoAdelaide.

Individualpraiseisalways difficultinaworkofthismagnitude,whereeveryonecontributessomuch,butitseems onlyjusttosingleoutthefirst trumpetandthetwoclarinettistsfortheirpartsin"ABall." Thecoranglaisandoboewere responsibleforsomedelightful soloandduetworkinthethird movement,"Sceneinthe Fields,"andthepercussionsectionperformedamazingacrobaticaswellasmusicalfeatsin the"DreamofaWitch'sSabbath."

Theopeningnumberonthe programmewasBenjaminBritten's"SimpleSymphonyfor StringOrthestra,'awell-known work,butonethatlosesnoneof itsfreshnessbyrepetition.

Therewasatendencytodiffusioninthefirstmovement, "BoisterousBourree,"butitwas quicklybroughtundercontrol, andtherestoftheworkwas notableforitsclarity,precision andperfectcolouring.Inpar- ticular,thesecondmovement, "PlayfulPizzicato,"wasamiracleofco-ordination.

Tchaikowsky'sConcertoinD Major,forviolinandorchestra, wasratherdisappointing.The solistwastheHungarianviolinist,KarolySzenassy,whopossessesabrillianttechnique,but usedittothedetrimentofsome ofthelovelysingingpassagesin theConcerto.Infactsoswiftlydidhemovethroughthefirst movementthatthiswell-known musictookontheappearanceof somethingnew,andthenew thingdidnotappealasmuch astheold.Thepacerobbed allthelovelymelodiesoftheir romanticfeeling,andleftthem cold,sterileandexpressionless.

IhaveafeelingthatSzenassy wouldbemoresuitedinthe severelyclassicalconcertwhere hislackofwarmthwouldnot mattersomuch.Possiblythe orchestrafoundtheinterpretationdifficulttofollow,butthere wasalackofcohesionbetween soloistandaccompanimenton morethanoneoccasionthatdid nothingtoimprovetherendition Altogether,Iwouldsumup impressionsoftheconcertas beingrathermixed.TheConcertowasnotuptoexpectations, theSimpleSymphonywasgood, andthe"FantasticSymphony" wasexcellent.Theaudience, whichontheMondaynightwas average,applaudedeverything withequalgusto,ahabitwith Australianaudienceswhichis thedespairofartists,orchestras, entrepreneurs-andcritics. -RONSARD.

MANILA,April13.-Aspecialcommission ofPhilippineBishopshasruledoutanything"supernatural"aboutthereportedfallingofmysterious rosepetalsandan'apparitionoftheBlessedVirginallegedtohavetakenplaceatLipainlate 1948.

ThejudgmentoftheBishops wasmadepublicinaspecial statementissuedhere.The episcopalcommitteewasheadedbyArchbishoupGabrielM. Reyes,ofManila,rankingmemberofthehierarchyinthe Philippines.

"We,theundersignedArchbishopandBishops,"thestatementdeclared,"constitutingfor thepurposeaspecialcommission,havingattentivelyexaminedandreviewedtheevidence andtestimoniescollectedinthe courseofrepeated,longand carefulinvestigations,have reachedtheunanimousconclusion,andherebyofficiallydeclare,thattheabove-mentioned evidenceandtestimoniesexcludeanysupernaturalinterventioninthereportedextraordinaryhappenings-including theshowerofpetals-atthe CarmelofLipa."

InadditiontoArchbishop Reyes,thestatementwassigned byBishopsCesarGuerrero,of SanFernando,,.MarianoMadriago,ofLingayan,RufinoSantos,ApostolicAdministratorof Lipa,JuanSison,Auxiliaryof NeuvaSegovia,andVincente Reyes,AuxiliaryofManila.

Thecentralfigureintherose petalmysteryatLipa,asre-

portedatthetimeofitsalleged occurrence,wasTeresitaCastillo,thena21-year-oldCarmelitepostulant.Accordingtoher testimonyatthetime,shewas walkingintheconventgarden ontheafternoonofSeptember 12,1948,whenherattention wasattractedbyavineswaying thoughtherewasnobreeze.

Shesaidshesawnoone,but heardavoiceurginghertocome tothespotfor15consecutive days.Thenextdaysheallegedlysawaladyinwhite.The followingdayshewasreportedly accompaniedbyothernuns,who weresaidtohaveseenmysteriousrosepetalsscatteredover theground.Thepostulantalone sawthevisionofalady,itwas reported.

Laterashowerofthemysteriousrosepetalsallegedly fellintheconventcellsandon thestaircase,andwerealsosaid tohavebeenseenbypeople outsidethecloister.

WhentheallegedPhenomenon attractedwideattentionbothin thePhilippinesandotherparts oftheworld,anofficialecclesiasticalinvestigationwaslaunched,firstbytheLipadiocesan authoritiesandthenbymembersofthePhilippineHierarchy.
