Thesojournofthe"HomePilgrimVirgin"endedafteraweek atthehomeofMr.andMrs. CecilHynes,Waterloo.During theweeklargenumbersgatheredattheHynes'hometohonour OurLady,sometravellinglong distances.Aseachgroupassembled,theRosaryandthe ActofConsecrationyererecited.
Aninspiringsightwastheassemblyofagroupofschoolchildren,towhomatalkonOur LadyofFatimawasgiven,
Ontheclosingnight,more than100peoplegatheredtorecitetheRosary.Afterwards, thestatuewascarriedfromthe housethroughaguardofChildrenofMary,tobetransported tothehomeofMr.Laurie Hynes. Aremarkablescenewasthe escortof27carswhichacornpaniedtheprogressofthe statue,whichwascarriedby twoChildrenofMary.Tile P.EiversandMr.C.Hynesled themechanisedpilgrimage.

ThefirstannualgeneralmeetingoftheIrish clubwasheldintheparishhall,Highgate,on April26.Therewasalargeattendanceofactual andintendingmembers.
Atthebeginningofthemeetingthesecretary'sreport,outliningtheClub'sactivitiessince itsinception,wasread.Froma socialpointofview,thereport stated,theclubhadbeena success,asithadbroughttogetheroldandnewimmigrants fromIreland,aswellasmany youngAustraliansofIrish ancestry.
Thebalancesheetwasthen read,revealingasoundfinancialposition,despitethe heavyexpensesincurredduring theyearinprovidingameeting placefortheclubandahall foritsdancesandsocials.
Inhisaddress,theoutgoing chairman,Mr.C.McDermott, thankedthemembersfortheir support,whileremindingthem
thattheClubwasstillinits infancy,andthereforeinneed oftheircontinuedsupport.He pointedoutthattheclub,still youngandinexperienced,had tendedtotheneedsofrecent arrivalsfromIreland,byway offindingsuitableaccommodationandemploymentforthem.
TheRev.M.Ryan,inashort address,congratulatedthe chairmanandthecommittee, fortheirinitiativeandcourage inbringingtheIrishclubinto existence.Heappealedtothe memberstobealwaysmindful ofandfaithfultothemottoof theclubascontainedinthe PrearhbleoftheConstitution:"FortheGloryofGodandthe HonourofIreland".Loyaltyto theclub'sconstitutionwasthe

Therehavebeenperiodsinhistorywhenadefensiveattitudewasessentialforsurvival,whentokeepasmallundamagedlightstillburningwasallthatcouldbedemanded ofthefaithful.Thiswithdrawalbecamenecessary,for example,intheDarkAges.Theobstaclestoanintegral Christianlifeweresooverwhelmingthatonlyinmonasterieswassuchlifepracticable.Onlytherewasculture ofanykindsafeguardedandpassedontotheworldinbettertimes.Suchconditionsmayyetprevailinthiscountryofours.WemayyetbeenteringanotherDarkAge whenallspiritualvalueswillbedeniedandallCatholic participationintheactivelifeofnationsbecomeimpossible.'
Thattime,however,hasnotyetarrived;itmaynever arrive.Wedonotknowthefuture.\Vhat'wedoknow isthatthereisadangerofdefeatism,adangerofmistakinginactionforpatience,andslothforwisdom.IftheCatholiclaitypossessedthecourageanddynamismthatour faithdemands,smallasournumbersare,wecouldchange theworld,wecouldconquerit,wecouldrestoreallthings inChrist.TheinactionandineffectivenessofCatholics andtheCatholicpress,isoneofthemostseriousaccusations levelledagainstusto-day.
TheCatholicpressisfulfillinganimportantroleinthe life.oftheChurch.Itisthefaithfulallyofthepreaching andteachingapostolateoftheChurchandanardentfoeof theheresiesand"isms"thatthreatentheverylifeofChrist's MysticalBody.TheCatholicpresshasagreatmission andagreatdestiny,especiallyinthiscriticalhourforall humanity.Judgingbytherelativelysmallcirculation whichourCatholicpapersenjoy,itwouldseemthatour peopleareasyetunawareoftheimportanceofthePress Apostolate.Inthesedays,whenpeopleformtheiropinionsandregulatetheirlivesalmostentirelybytheirdaily readingofnewspapers,itisamatterofthegravestimportancethattheCatholicnewspaperholdprideofplace amongstthejournalsthatfindtheirwayintoourhomes. OneofEngland'searlyheroes wasHerewardtheWake,who, evenasaboy,gaveclearand convincingpromiseoftheman hewastobecome.Although wellbornandwealthy,hsruled hisfollowers,boysofhisown age,asmuchbyhiscourageand hisleadershipasbyhisrank. Everyboyishprankwhichcould beplayedwasplayed,and Herewardbecamethedarlingof thecountryside.
Asayoungmanhetravelled toafarcountry.Once,when outhunting,hehadgreatgood fortuneandreturnedtothe castlewherehewasstaying quiteearly.Therehebeheld thecastlegateclosed,andall theknightsandladieswithin. Asquirrel,runningroundthe baseofatreetrunk,camesuddenlyuponhimandgavehima greatfright.Hecowereddown andsnarled.Butthesquirrel wasjustasbadlyscaredand scamperedupatreeoutof reach.Thenhetriedtocatch aptarmigan,butshepeckedhim onthenoseandfrightenedhim off.

VATICANCITY,April14(Radio,NC).CatholicReligiouspersonnelservinginparishes andinstitutionslocatedinIsraelterritoryareina stateofanxietyoverregulationsissuedbythe Israelgovernmentrestrictingresidencepermits, accordingtoareportbyFidesagency.
Duringthelasttwoyears, non-Jewishforeignershave beenadmittedtothecountryas "tourists"andreceivedpermits validfortwoorsixmonths,accordingtothetypeofpermit granted.Inprinciple,thepermitsarerenewable;however, renewalmayberefusedincase ofanynationalcrisiswhatsoever. AvenerableQuaker,aheart andsouladvocateofthenew doctrine,namedWilliamMartin,wasofopinionthatthe solidfoundationoftheedifice oftemperancecouldbelaidby nootherthanbyFatherMatthew."OhTheobaldMatthew" hewouldsay"ifthouwouldst givethyaid,muchgoodcould bedoneinthiscity."But FatherMatthewwasnotthe onetospringintoapopular movementwithoutduereflectionandferventprayer.

Therearemanyotherswho willcriticisethechoiceofthis workforperformancebyour 'smallorchestra-evenwhen augmented-anddadmittedly themusiclosessomeofthebalanceoforchestralcolourfor whichBerliozwasfamous.Neverheless,theperformanceon Mondaynightwassocloseto thecomposer'sintentionthatit justifiedtheexperiment.With theexceptionoftheendofthe Allegrosectioninthefirst movement,Kripsheldtheorchestratogetherin'afinely-proportioned,well-contrasted.performancethatleftonewitha feelingofadmirationforthe conductor,andprideinour players.Itmustalsohave givengreatpleasuretoHenry Kripshimselftoseehowthe standard'oftheorchestra,which hedidsomuchtoraise,has goneonimprovingsincehis changetoAdelaide.
Individualpraiseisalways difficultinaworkofthismagnitude,whereeveryonecontributessomuch,butitseems onlyjusttosingleoutthefirst trumpetandthetwoclarinettistsfortheirpartsin"ABall." Thecoranglaisandoboewere responsibleforsomedelightful soloandduetworkinthethird movement,"Sceneinthe Fields,"andthepercussionsectionperformedamazingacrobaticaswellasmusicalfeatsin the"DreamofaWitch'sSabbath."
Theopeningnumberonthe programmewasBenjaminBritten's"SimpleSymphonyfor StringOrthestra,'awell-known work,butonethatlosesnoneof itsfreshnessbyrepetition.
Therewasatendencytodiffusioninthefirstmovement, "BoisterousBourree,"butitwas quicklybroughtundercontrol, andtherestoftheworkwas notableforitsclarity,precision andperfectcolouring.Inpar- ticular,thesecondmovement, "PlayfulPizzicato,"wasamiracleofco-ordination.
Tchaikowsky'sConcertoinD Major,forviolinandorchestra, wasratherdisappointing.The solistwastheHungarianviolinist,KarolySzenassy,whopossessesabrillianttechnique,but usedittothedetrimentofsome ofthelovelysingingpassagesin theConcerto.Infactsoswiftlydidhemovethroughthefirst movementthatthiswell-known musictookontheappearanceof somethingnew,andthenew thingdidnotappealasmuch astheold.Thepacerobbed allthelovelymelodiesoftheir romanticfeeling,andleftthem cold,sterileandexpressionless.
IhaveafeelingthatSzenassy wouldbemoresuitedinthe severelyclassicalconcertwhere hislackofwarmthwouldnot mattersomuch.Possiblythe orchestrafoundtheinterpretationdifficulttofollow,butthere wasalackofcohesionbetween soloistandaccompanimenton morethanoneoccasionthatdid nothingtoimprovetherendition Altogether,Iwouldsumup impressionsoftheconcertas beingrathermixed.TheConcertowasnotuptoexpectations, theSimpleSymphonywasgood, andthe"FantasticSymphony" wasexcellent.Theaudience, whichontheMondaynightwas average,applaudedeverything withequalgusto,ahabitwith Australianaudienceswhichis thedespairofartists,orchestras, entrepreneurs-andcritics. -RONSARD.
